Save Energy, Be Mindful Of Appliance Safety During The Holiday Season

0

Vectren Energy Delivery (Vectren) is reminding its customers about ways to lower energy usage and have a safe holiday season.

“The holidays typically bring an increase in energy consumption, whether it’s decorating your home with festive lights, hosting a houseful of guests or cooking a feast for the family,” said Brad Ellsworth, president of Vectren Energy Delivery of Indiana-South. “However, there are a number of simple ways to use energy wisely and safely over the next several weeks.”

Vectren suggests customers switch the lights on their holiday displays from standard incandescent or compact fluorescent (CFL) to Light Emitting Diode (LED) lights. LED lights are shatterproof, shock resistant and safe to touch. In addition, LEDs use 75 percent less energy than the typical incandescent lights used.

Vectren also recommends the following tips to help consumers enjoy the holiday safely while using energy wisely:

  • Let the holidays serve as reminder to get an annual furnace inspection if you haven’t already done so.
  • Use fiber optic decorations. Fiber optic trees and decorations are the ultimate in energy efficiency. In most cases, they use a single light bulb located in the base of the unit to light the entire decoration.
  • Use a timer for your holiday lights. This allows for lights to be illuminated only when necessary.
  • Don’t overload your electrical circuits.
  • Never run appliance cords or extension cords under carpet. They are designed to be kept cool by movement of room air around the cord.
  • Connect lights to power strips that have several outlets and built-in circuit breakers.
  • Make sure lights and extensions cords used for outdoor decoration are approved for outdoor use.
  • Turn the thermostat down – to 68 degrees or lower – when you have guests. Extra bodies in the house mean extra warmth at no cost to you.
  • When cooking for the holidays, don’t forget to use your microwave oven. Fast and efficient microwave ovens use around 50 percent less energy than conventional ovens.
  • Don’t open the oven door to take a peek at what’s cooking inside. Instead, turn on the oven light and check the cooking status through the oven window. Opening the oven door lowers the temperature inside – by as much as 25 degrees – which increases cooking time and wastes energy.
  • Have your wood-burning fireplace inspected and cleaned annually to eliminate a potential fire hazard in the chimney or flue.

Eastland Mall Preparing For Flux Of Shoppers On Black Friday

Stores at Eastland mall in Evansville are lit up and ready for Black Friday shoppers.

People from all over the Tri-State will be prepared to brave the crowds in search of Black Friday discounts.

“We have folks coming in from western Kentucky, southern Illinois, southwest Indiana, and we are really the only mall of our type in a two-hour driving distance in any direction,” says Eastland Mall director of marketing Sean Ferguson.

Retailers have been busy before the holiday season started.

“It’s a task. I mean a lot of folks start the first part of November and even some sooner than that,” says Ferguson.

Once Black Friday hits, it’s all hands on deck.

“It’s such an up hill push to get to that point and once it hits everybody is ready to go. It’s sales all the way through to Christmas eve,” says Ferguson.

Crowds are expected to ramp up Thursday night and throughout the weekend.

“There are serious shoppers,” says Ferguson.

“They will come in; they’ll shop, they’ll carry the bags out, they’ll come in again and shop some more and we see that really all weekend long.”

And some buyers have a plan for their Black Friday spending.

“I have like a specific amount of stores I am going to go to so I am probably going to go to Victoria Secret… Somewhere that has a scarf. I don’t really know where that is,” says shopper Mason Taylor.

Others are trying to avoid the crowds, but take advantage of the deals.

“Probably tomorrow night when things are going to start getting crazy here,” says shopper Elisabeth Kershaw.

“Hopefully I can get my winter wardrobe in for Christmas time and then get everything done for springtime, and then vacation season will come around so I am getting those deals,” says Kershaw.

“I’m definitely looking for the deals,” says shopper Tristin Keepers.

“I am not made of money so I’ll be trying to look for stuff that I like best and that will cost the least.”

Eastland mall is open for Black Friday shoppers starting at 6 a.m. until 9 p.m. Friday.

Ritzy’s Fantasy Of Lights Open For The Holiday Season

It’s the 25th year for Ritzy’s Fantasy of Lights and organizers say they couldn’t do it without all the help they get from the community.
The light display kicked off in Garvin Park, and it’s also going to help raise money for the Easter Seals Rehab Center. Ritzy’s Fantasy of Lights kicked off tonight at 5 o’clock and wrapped up around 10 o’clock. If you missed today’s ceremonial kick off, don’t worry, because it runs through New Year’s Day.
Taylor Skinner, who participated in the ceremonial kick off, explains, “It kind of brings us all together because we have had a rough week you know. So it’s a good thing to do as a family. I am really excited to go see it. It looks like fun and the carriage ride looks like a lot of fun and hopefully, this little thing over here has fun too. She’s calling the horses.”

For vehicles up to 6 people, admission is at least $7 per vehicle.
