Gov. Holcomb strengthens ties with Ukraine

Gov. Holcomb became the first U.S. governor to visit Ukraine since Russia’s invasion in February 2022

Kyiv, Ukraine – Governor Eric J. Holcomb spent the day in Ukraine to demonstrate Indiana’s solidarity. Discussions with Ukrainian leadership surrounding future partnerships and fostering growth in economic development, academic and cultural relations.

Gov. Holcomb and Pres. Zelenskyy met in the presidential office of Ukraine and discussed the importance of subnational cooperation.

Gov. Holcomb and Gov. Bunechko of Zhytomyr Oblast signed an MOU focused on academic, cultural, and economic ties. Indiana’s high profile in agriculture, higher education, and manufacturing has much in common with Zhytomyr, and we expect years of beneficial collaboration.

U.S. Ambassador Brink hosted a Friends of Indiana reception at her residence in Kyiv. Governor Bunechko and Deputy Prime Minister of Ukraine were in attendance.

While in Kyiv, Gov. Holcomb paid respects at the Wall of Remembrance, which honors those who have lost their lives during the Russian invasion.

This marks Gov. Holcomb’s 25th international economic development trip as governor and his first trip to Ukraine. The cost of the governor’s travel is being paid through private donations to the Indiana Economic Development Foundation.

New Awards Program Celebrates Businesses and Individuals in Downtown Evansville

SEPTEMBER 10, 2024

ANNOUNCEMENT – Monday, September 9: The Downtown Evansville Economic Improvement District (EID) is launching the DTEVVs, a new awards program designed to annually celebrate Downtown businesses and neighbors. The DTEVVs will recognize achievements in four categories. Nominations are now open for the following:

Good Neighbor Award: Awarded to a business or organization who has gone above and beyond to contribute to the growth and progression of Downtown Evansville. Recipient serves as a role model for others, participates in neighborhood initiatives, and fosters positive relationships with neighboring businesses and residents.

Economic Impact Award: Awarded to a business for their positive contributions to the economic vitality of Downtown Evansville (examples include providing employment opportunities, advocating for Downtown, supporting development, and generating consumer spending). Recipient has demonstrated outstanding performance, while also enhancing consumer, investor, worker, and visitor experiences.

Winners will be announced in November and will receive a commemorative plaque.

Tuesday, September 10All USI freshmen to take part in fun-filled educational day in Historic New Harmony

On Tuesday, September 10, the University will transport all freshmen enrolled in the UNIV101 course to New Harmony, Indiana, for an exciting day of interactive activities, engaged learning and a variety of games and spirit activities. This will be the third year for the Engaged Learning Day. This educational excursion is generously supported by the USI Foundation and the Provost’s Office.

USI Political Science, Public Administration and Philosophy Department hosts series of election year events

The University of Southern Indiana Political Science, Public Administration and Philosophy Department in the College of Liberal Arts will host a series of events on campus, including a presidential debate watch party and a post-election analysis and discussion around the 2024 presidential election. All events are open to the public at no charge and are funded through a Strengthening Campus and Community Election Engagement Grant from the Community-Engaged Alliance.

“We are excited about hosting these events on the USI campus during the Fall Semester,” says Dr. Matt Hanka, Professor of Political Science. “With Indiana’s voter turnout among the lowest in the nation and Vanderburgh County’s voter turnout among the lowest in Indiana, these events are more important than ever to foster greater civic responsibility and engagement in the political process for our students and the USI community.”

From 7 to 9:30 p.m. on Tuesday, September 10 in WA 1 (Forum 1), the Presidential Debate Watch Party will feature a discussion on critical thinking, civil discourse and civic engagement. The discussion will start after 7 p.m., and the debate will follow at 8 p.m. Pizza and refreshments will be provided.

From 6 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, October 24 in Kleymeyer Hall in the Liberal Arts Center, the department will host a watch party for Indiana’s gubernatorial debate hosted by the Indiana Debate Commission.

From 6 to 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, November 7 in Kleymeyer Hall, the department will host a post-election analysis and discussion with Dr. Matt Hanka, Professor of Political Science, and Dr. Nick LaRowe, Associate Professor of Political Science and Pre-Law Coordinator.

Additionally, the department is holding a week-long voter registration drive from Monday through Friday, September 16-20, and an annual reading of the U.S. Constitution in the University Center Courtyard from noon to 1 p.m. Tuesday, September 17.

The Political Science, Public Administration and Philosophy Department’s mission is to educate students on local and national issues, help them become active and engaged citizens, acquire practical experience and develop connections in the community and region and learn how to critically assess contemporary political events and identify practical solutions to social problems.

Andres Rodriguez picks up top finish for UE

RICHMOND, Ky. – Led by a top 20 finish from Andres Rodriguez, the University of Evansville men’s golf team earned a tie for 5^th place at the Colonel Shootout at The University Club at Arlington.

In Sunday’s final round, Rodriguez carded a 2-over 73 and finished the 3-round tournament with a 1-over-par 214. He tied for 17^th place and had a low round of 70 to open play on Saturday.

Taking second on the Purple Aces squad and tying for 27^th on the leaderboard was Omar Khalid. Carding a 2-over 73 in the final round, he wrapped up the weekend with a 217. Behind him was the duo of Luke Schneider and Bryce Conlee. Both completed the event with a 9-over 222. Schneider posted a 78 on Sunday while Conlee shot a 75. They tied for 44^th place.

Luke Price tied for 60^th place with a final score of 227 while Daniil Romashkin was one shot behind with a 228. He finished in 63^rd.

Finishing at 19-over, UE tied Kentucky State for 5^th place in the final standings. Eastern Kentucky, who wrapped up the three rounds at 24-under, were 18 ahead of runner-up Samford. Connor Gdovin of EKU and Ben Loomis from Vanderbilt tied for the individual win with scores of 206, seven under.

Evansville’s next tournament will be the Graeme McDowell Invitational in Birmingham, Ala. It will take place from Sept. 22-24.

Kate Petrova leads UE on first day

NORMAL, Ill. – Day one of the Redbird Invitational saw Kate Petrova pace the University of Evansville women’s golf team. UE heads into Monday’s final round in 10^th place at Weibring Golf Club.

Petrova is tied for 14^th place with a 148. Identical rounds at 2-over 74 have Petrova just three strokes outside of the top five. In her first tournament for the Purple Aces, Louise Standtke was second on the team. After carding a 77 to open the event, she shot a 3-over 75 to finish with a 152. She is tied for 30^th place.

Third on the team was Elizabeth Mercer. She carded an 81 in the opening round before lowering her score by five strokes in the second round of 18. A 76 has her tied for the 57^th position. Mallory Russell opened at 4-over-par, posting a 76 before notching an 83 to complete the day. She has a 159. Jane Grankina checks in with a 160. Her rounds finished at 82 and 78.

Trinity Dubbs is competing as an individual and registered scores of 78 and 83.

Illinois State holds a commanding lead in the team standings. With two rounds in the books, the Redbirds stand at 13-under. Little Rock is in second place at 14-over, 27 strokes behind ISU. Evansville is in 10^th place, finishing 35 over. Monday will mark the final 18 holes of the tournament.

Women’s Golf opens 2024-25 season at MSU Payne Stewart Memorial

EVANSVILLE, Ind.- University of Southern Indiana Women’s Golf kick starts their 2024-25 season at the Missouri State University Payne Stewart Memorial on Monday and Tuesday (Sept. 9-10) at Twin Oaks Country Club in Springfield, Missouri.

The course is a par 71 at 6,070 yards with a 8:30 a.m. shotgun start. Each team plays 36 holes on Monday and 18 holes on Tuesday. Follow the link above for live scoring on the tournament.

The field includes Creighton University, Drury University, Lindenwood University, North Dakota State University, Oklahoma City University, University of Nebraska Omaha, Oral Roberts University, Texas A&M-Commerce, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, Western Illinois University, and Missouri State.

Head coach Ann Sullivan enters her second season at USI after taking over last October. Sullivan returns only two players from the 2023-24 season in sophomore Alexis Wymer (Bridgeport, Illinois) and senior Baileigh Schneider (Huntingburg, Indiana). Six new freshmen join the roster including Jade Blakeley (Kingston, Jamaica), Brianna Kirsch (Lancaster, Wisconsin), Camryn Luthy (Chester, Illinois), Zhana Navato (Etobicoke, Canada), Harper Ready (Cape Girardeau, Missouri), and Fernanda Vera (Lambare, Paraguay).
