Trailblazers fall in Region 24 match at Kaskaskia

0

CENTRALIA, Ill. – The Vincennes University volleyball team had their Region 24 winning streak snapped Tuesday night when the Blazers fell in four sets at Kaskaskia College.

The Blue Angels ended the VU winning streak at 44 matches as Vincennes fell 14-25, 25-18, 20-25, 17-25.

The match started out well for the Trailblazers, building a quick 10-7 lead over Kaskaskia, before the Blue Angels used a pair of big scoring runs to pull away late in the opening set and take set one 25-14 over Vincennes.

VU would look to rebound and even the match in the second set and got off to a great start, growing a big 14-5 early advantage.

Kaskaskia would try to cut into the big deficit down the stretch of the set, but were only able to cut the VU lead down to six as the Blazers took set two 25-18 and evened the match at 1-1.

Vincennes forced a pivotal third set and the momentum would swing back-and-forth throughout most of the set as both teams traded the lead and left the score even at 20-20.

Kaskaskia would close out the third set strong and take a 2-1 match lead by scoring the final five points of the third set to win 25-20.

With their backs against the wall, the Trailblazers refused to give up, battling in the fourth set after falling behind early.

Unfortunately for Vincennes, Kaskaskia was able to make a few more plays late in set four to pull away and ride the home crowd to a 25-17 set four win to take the match 3-1.

“You need to be ready to match the other team’s intensity, especially in their place and we failed to do that tonight,” VUVB Head Coach Gary Sien said. “When you fail to do that, you get beat, it’s as simple as that. It’s disappointing that after such a great weekend, we took a couple of steps backwards.”

The Trailblazer offense was led by sophomore Isadora Dias (Rio Grande de Norte, Brazil) who led the Blazers with 13 kills, six digs, two blocks, one set assist and one ace.

Sophomores Elisa Dalla Pozza (Vincenza, Italy) and Allison Czyzewski (Louisville, Ill.) had a good game at the net, each recording six kills, with Dalla Pozza posting a team-high five blocks and two aces, while Czyzewski added four blocks.

Sophomore Laura Tavares (Meridia, Venezuela) finished her night with five kills, six digs, one set assist and one block.

Freshmen Martyna Sadowska (Pila, Poland) and Paulina Fister (Tuszyn, Poland) rounded out the VU offensive numbers with Sadowska ending with three kills and one block, while Fister finished the match with one kill and a pair of digs.

Sophomore setter Libby Mehringer (Jasper, Ind.) ran the VU offense with a team-high 28 set assists, five kills, one ace and one dig.

Sophomore libero Grace Flexter (Oblong, Ill.) matched the team-high in digs on the night with six digs and two set assists, while fellow sophomore Dylan DeCoursey (Montgomery, Ind.) added two set assists.

Freshman Julianna Rettig (Antioch, Ill.) had a really good match in her second appearance in the Blue and Gold this season, finishing her night with a pair of digs, two set assists and one ace.

Freshman Ashley Earp (Mattoon, Ill.) rounded out the VU box score by recording one block on the night.

“Julianna stepped up in only her second collegiate match to pass and serve well,” Sien added. “Allison had a good night at the net with blocking and hitting and Isadora played well all around in both the front and back rows.”

The Trailblazers will look to rebound, regroup and hopefully begin a new Region 24 winning streak when they return to the home floor of the Physical Education Complex Friday, Sept. 27 to take on John A. Logan College at 7 p.m. eastern.

The Blazers will then close out the weekend by heading to Champaign, Ill. for the Parkland College Fall Challenge Saturday, Sept. 28 and face-off against NJCAA Division II No. 5-ranked Heartland C.C. at 4 p.m. eastern and Lincoln Land C.C. at 6 p.m. eastern.

“We don’t have a choice now, we have to play perfectly from this point on in all Region play,” Sien said. “This should be a wake up call for all of us that we need to be at our very best at all times.”

THE CITY-COUNTY OBSERVER IS CALLING FOR ALL “PRAYER WARRIORS”TO PRAY FOR THE HEALING OF MATT REDD

0

Matt Redd was a passenger in the car with Clinton Keown when the tragic accident happened on an Illinois highway. While our deepest sympathies and prayers go out to the Keown family, we also pray for miraculous healing for Matt Redd.

Matt’s wife, Andrea, posted on Facebook with a sincere plea for prayers for Matt, their boys, and Andrea. We believe that her words will touch you like they touched us, and you will want to drop to your knees immediately to pray for this family.

Here’s the request in Andrea’s words:

Lord, I know you are being flooded with prayers right now, and we are grateful that you hear them. Myself and My boys are asking that you receive them as well, and as we are on our knees praying, we ask that you not separate our family just yet. By your blessings and grace, my husband and I are one, and with our boys we are a complete unit.  We still need him, the rest of our family, and the community still needs his good deeds.

As it may be a selfish prayer we are not forgetting that another family is suffering a great loss as they are mourning their son, brother, husband, and father.
As it was your will to call Clint home from the accident we are keeping them in our thoughts and prayers as well, especially his wife and young children. Lord send them an angel of comfort at this time.

Many have already heard the awful news but I wanted to post for myself and our boys to ask for prayers we are in dire need of them. Matthew is in need of them. We do not know the cause of the accident but what we do know is that somehow control was lost causing the car to hit a guardrail rolled multiple times and landed in a ditch. Luckily someone saw them, the Tesla signaled emergency and first responders were there fast.  Matt was alert waving his arm for help when they arrived and from the pieces we are putting together we do not believe he was ever without oxygen. But the trauma is extensive. He has severe brain injuries, skull fractures, severe swelling, neck fractures, facial fractures, loss of a lot of blood. Blood in his stomach and lungs, a broken rib and a punctured lung. His extremities are good. If you are not familiar with a Tesla the roof is a sheet of glass. The car hit a guardrail flipped over it and rolled multiple times into a ditch filled with large rocks. The roof was shattered which exposed Matt and Clint.  We do know Matt was conscious until first responders arrived then he lost consciousness and was then on a ventilator. They wanted to airlift him to the hospital but weather conditions would not allow it. He was taken by ambulance and his dear friend had a police escort meet the ambulance and get him to the hospital sooner.  Right now we are letting Matt rest. We need his brain to rest and the swelling to go down.

Current condition:

This morning the Dr was able to get Matt to react on his right side with a nerve test. Matt was swatting him away. That is a good sign. His left side is not reacting due to the collapsed carotid artery. So that artery affects the opposite side of the body.  He has 4 major arteries going to the brain, 2 of them are completely blocked but we can’t do anything about it at this time due to his brain bleed. His oxygen is better today than it was yesterday. He had a ct scan this morning and there are no changes
This evening they were able to take him off the blood pressure medicine. His oxygen is at 37% so he is doing the other 67%.  The focus is on the swelling going down and to not let him get agitated.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR CONTINUE PRAYERS

Thank you for your continued prayers. We are beyond grateful for the outpour of prayers, comfort, and support we are receiving.  This will be a long, hard-fought battle, but if anyone can do it, Matty Redd can.

You are my world, Matthew William …..You are my everything.

FOOTNOTES:

Please keep praying for Matt Redd’s recovery and continue to look over and protect his family.

The City-County Observer management and staff are currently working on finding an appropriate time and location to gather For a prayer vigil for Matt Redd and his family.

Please contact Johnny Kincaid at 812-589-2476 for more information concerning the prayer vigil.

CenterPoint Energy launches Customer Experience Collaborative in southwestern Indiana

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – Sept. 26, 2024 – CenterPoint Energy today announced the launch of its first-ever Customer Experience Collaborative (CEC), an initiative designed to give residential and small business customers a direct engagement opportunity with company leaders. Starting today, applications are open for southwestern Indiana electric and/or natural gas customers interested in participating in this new program, which focuses on incorporating customer insights into the development of programs and services to better meet customer needs.

“We are excited to launch this new effort as a unique opportunity to connect directly with our southwestern Indiana customer base,” said Mike Roeder, CenterPoint’s Senior Vice President for External Affairs. “We understand that our commitment to these meetings goes beyond gathering feedback; it’s about making sure our customers’ voices become a key part of how we do business.”

The CEC will bring together a select group of customers from across CenterPoint’s southwestern Indiana service area, representing diverse perspectives and needs. Meetings will be structured in two parts: company representatives will first present on various aspects of operations and activities, followed by a collaborative session where participants will share their insights and feedback.

The application process and recruitment will take place through mid-October, with the first meeting scheduled for November.

The CEC is another step in a broader effort by CenterPoint to listen and communicate with customers and strengthen its relationship with communities across its southwestern Indiana service territory. As CenterPoint continues to enhance its customer-focused initiatives, the company remains dedicated to its commitment to providing safe and reliable energy.

USI College of Liberal Arts announces new Archaeology Lab with open house

0

The University of Southern Indiana’s World Languages and Cultures Department recently moved its Archaeology Lab to the former computer lab in the lower level of the Liberal Arts Center. The Archaeology Lab was previously housed in the Public Safety building but has now found a new permanent home. To celebrate the new lab, an open house will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, September 30 in the lower level of the Liberal Arts Center. The event will be open to the public and campus community at no cost. Snacks and refreshments will be provided.

“We have some amazing archaeological collections here at USI, and we’ve simply outgrown our old lab over the past 15 years,” says Dr. Mike Strezewski, Professor of Anthropology, “This new lab will give us a great new space for teaching and student research and will increase the visibility of the anthropology major.”

Once called “the fishbowl” because of the floor to ceiling windows facing the hallway, the computer lab on the Lower Level of the Liberal Arts Center was rarely used during the academic year. The idea of shrinking the lab to make way for a much-needed space that current students, potential students and parents could all marvel at was brought forth by Dr. Del Doughty, Dean of the College of Liberal Arts.

Strezewski and Dr. Dan Bauer, Professor of Anthropology, expressed interest and the need for a new space, and the decision was made to move the Archaeology Lab.

The lab will provide more hands-on learning experiences for students, including analyzing the collections held by the University and washing and cataloging artifacts from summer field excavations. This lab will also be used for ANTH 401: Lab Methods in Archaeology so students can learn how to identify and analyze the different types of archaeological artifacts one might find in this area.

“The Archaeology Lab has been due for a new home for a while now, and it could not have been put in a better place. I’m excited for new and former USI students to be able to see the lab and everything we put into this program and hopefully spark some new interest,” says Ben Grubbs, senior anthropology and French major. “In addition to showcasing our hard work throughout the semester, the new lab will also serve as a great place for all our collections. This will be great move for us, and it’ll create a wonderful impact on the future of the program.”
