Free Yellow Cab Rides on New Year’s Eve

Logan’s Promise is making sure everyone has a safe option to get home through the new year. Logan’s Promise is teaming up with River City Yellow Cab to provide free rides home through January 1st.

Logan’s Promise urges drivers to have a plan if they choose to drink and not get behind the wheel.

The organization honors late Reitz football player Logan Brown who was killed in a head-on crash by a drunk driver in March of 2015.

With New Year’s Eve coming up those behind Logan’s Promise encourage everyone to take advantage of the safe option.

Parent Charles Brown says, “The goal is just to keep people off the street and allow people to make good choices and those people that are out on the streets to have a safe path home.”

The service is for residents of Vanderburgh, Posey, Warrick and Gibson Counties.

People wanting to use the service will have to call Yellow Cab or use the Nextaxi app.

University of Southern Indiana Women’s Basketball closes its 2018-19 non-conference schedule with a Midwest Region bout against No. 8 Ashland University Sunday at 1 p.m. at the Physical Activities Center. The game will be the first of a men’s and women’s doubleheader, with USI’s men hosting Ohio Valley University in the second game of the Bill Joergens Memorial Classic at 3:15 p.m.

Sunday’s game also will be aired live on 95.7 The Spin and on the GLVC Sports Network, while live stats, audio and video are available at GoUSIEagles.com.

USI enters Sunday’s game with an 8-2 record after a 74-71 road setback to defending NCAA champion University of Central Missouri. Senior guard Alex Davidson (Salem, Indiana) averages 13.4 points, 5.1 rebounds and 4.2 assists per game to lead the Eagles, while senior center Kacy Eschweiler (St. Charles, Missouri) is contributing 13.0 points and a team-best 8.0 rebounds per contest.

The Screaming Eagles are averaging 74.8 points per game as a team, good enough for second in the GLVC, while Ashland is second in the nation in scoring at 93.9 points per contest.

USI Women’s Basketball Notes
• Eagles eight-game win streak ends at Central Missouri. USI Women’s Basketball had its eight-game win streak come to an end with its 74-71 loss at No. 15 Central Missouri. The Screaming Eagles cut a 16-point fourth-quarter deficit to a single point within the final minute, but a pair of free throws inside the last 10 seconds forced USI to put up a last second three-point attempt that was blocked.

• Davidson scores 19 in loss. Senior guard Alex Davidson scored a game-high 19 points in the loss to Central Missouri, including 16 in the first half.

• Foul trouble plagues Eagles in loss. Early foul trouble plagued the Eagles in their loss to Central Missouri. USI had three starters with three fouls heading into the intermission, with senior center Kacy Eschweiler being limited to just two minutes of playing time during the first half.

• Brown, Turner come up big in loss. Freshman forward Ashlynn Brown and sophomore center Audrey Turner each posted season highs in the Eagles loss to the Jennies. Turner scored six points, while Brown scored all nine of her points in the final 10 minutes to aid the Eagles in their comeback bid.

• Spreading the wealth. The Eagles have six players averaging at least 7.0 points per game and three players averaging in double-figures. USI also has had six players lead it in scoring this season.

• Eagles in midst of second-longest home win streak. The Eagles extended their home winning streak to 28 games with their win over Lindenwood-Belleville December 4. It is USI’s second-longest home winning streak in program history. USI won 33 straight games at the PAC from 1996-98 and 23 straight home games from 2000-02.

• 20-point efforts. Guy’s career-high 25 points in USI’s win over Michigan Tech marked a season-high for the Eagles and made her the fourth different Eagle to notch a 20-point game this season. USI has had eight different players reach double-figures in the scoring column this year and six different players reach double-figures multiple times.
Notes continued on next page…

• Up next. USI hosts No. 8 and 2017 national champion Ashland December 30 to close out its non-conference schedule.

“IS IT TRUE” DECEMBER 26, 2018

9

We hope that today’s “IS IT TRUE” will provoke honest and open dialogue concerning issues that we, as responsible citizens of this community, need to address in a rational and responsible way?

IS IT TRUE that  last year the lawmakers of the State of Indiana set the stage for all governments at the state and local level to start getting less of the casino tax known in and around Evansville as “boat money”?…back when casino gambling was approved it was going to be the “manna from heaven” that funded education?  …in recent years our elected officials declared that those dollars could be redirected to help pay for infrastructure?…here we are more than 20 plus years later our city officials borrowed $25 million against future “boat money” to pay for fun and games projects that will not impact the economy any more than Weinzapfel’s Ford Center did?

IS IT TRUE seeing the pictures of the inside of the Ford Center during the last Thunderbolts hockey game was really disheartening?  …that lack attendance at the Thunderbolts hockey games so far this year has greatly affected overall concession profits?  …it’s obvious after paying for the Ford Center crew, it is virtually impossible that the Ford Center made any money during the Thunderbolts hockey games?  …we would like to point out that the Ford Center really is a very nice facility and the crew that runs it works hard and does a good job?

IS IT TRUE that the sheriff’s department completed an investigation literally should be a candidate crime to be included in as an episode of CIS?…this time it took the brain trust of law Southwest Indiana law enforcement to dig deep into their bag of tricks to use DNA analysis to catch a voyeuristic fool who sought his fortune by stealing 30 pairs of ladies panties?…this dimwit not only stole panties but he left notes for USI coeds that made them think he was watching them?…this is a case of high technology meets a dimwit with a very strange fetish?…come to think of it this perp would make a better character in “Criminal Minds” because the mind of a note leaving panty thief is one worth studying?.

IS IT TRUE that 2018 seems to be ending in much the same way that 2017 did when it comes to shootings? …just before Christmas, there was a triple shooting in the 500 blocks of Morton Avenue?. ..we do commend the reduction of homicides with respect to last year but hope that things don’t get caught up in the last week of the year.
IS IT TRUE the Christmas party put on by the Coalition of Inner City Neighborhoods has been going on for two decades?  …this worthy community event was the brainchild of  Federick Cook?  …the “Coalition of Inner City Neighborhoods” ( COINS) allowed the children to talk to Santa and also provided them with toys and mittens and gloves and refreshments on Christmas Eve? …the City-County Observer give five (5) cheers to Federick Cook and the volunteers of the “Coalition of Inner City Neighborhoods” for helping the most vulnerable among us?
IS IT TRUE that our good friend Phyllip Davis has found a new calling in life as Santa Claus?…he took it upon himself to dress the part and go around town spreading good cheer and Christmas spirit indiscriminately?…it is obvious that Mr. Davis loves this role and we encourage him to keep it up throughout his life?…for this selfless activity, Phyllip Davis is the City-County Observer’s “Santa Of The Year”?
IS IT TRUE that the City-County Observer “READERS POLLS” are considered to be non-scientific but trendy?
IS IT TRUE that a recent “Readers Poll” question asked, “Who was the most effective Vanderburgh County Commissioner in 2018”?  …that 218 people voted in this poll?  …that Ben Shoulders received 87 votes and Cheryl Musgrave garnered 73 votes?
IS IT TRUE that the most recent “Readers Poll” question was “Who was the most effective Vanderburgh County Department head in 2018”? …that 306 votes were cast?  …that Sheriff Dave Wedding received 59 votes?  …that County Clerk Of The Courts-Carla Hayden was second with 53 votes casts?  …that County Coroner Steve Lockyear and Treasurer, Susan Kirk tied with 51 votes each?

IS IT TRUE that last week the  “Readers Poll” question was “Who was the most effective City Council member in 2018? …that 337 people voted in this poll?  …that Justin Elpers won this poll be receiving 96 votes?  …Dr. Dan Adams was a close second with 79 votes?

IS IT TRUE that a recent “Readers Poll” question asks “Who was the most effective Vanderburgh County Council member in 2018”?  ….225 people voted in this poll?…that Jim Raben lead the poll by receiving 77 votes and Tom Shelter, Jr. was a distance second with 29 votes?

IS IT TRUE that ECHO Housing Corp. just turned a vacant warehouse at 101 N. Garvin St. into 27 one-bedroom units of housing for the chronically homeless.  …this project cost $6.1 million dollars? …we wonder how many two bedrooms Habitat type homes that ECHO could have built with this $6.1 million dollar of Federal and State grants earmarked for housing for the homeless and economically disadvantaged of this area? …the answer is around 100 homes?

IS IT TRUE that last week a CCO reader had a problem with his car?  …he called Hamrick Towing and was extremely surprised how quickly they showed up?  …the Hamrick’s tow truck driver was extremely professional and knowledgeable?  …instead of towing the car off to storage the driver decided that the car battery needed a quick jump which saved him a towing fee? …if you have a problem with your vehicle and has to be towed call Hamrick Towing, Evansville?

Todays“Readers Poll” question is: Do you feel that the four (4) people running for a seat on Evansville City Council that work for the same business will cause them problems at the ballot box?
