AG Curtis Hill Announces New Effort To Combat Robocalls

0

Attorney General Curtis Hill today announced that he is helping lead a bipartisan group of 40 state attorneys general developing fresh strategies to stop or reduce annoying, harmful and illegal robocalls. The coalition is reviewing innovative technologies that major telecom companies hope to employ in this fight. Indiana is one of 15 states on the working group’s executive committee.

“Hoosiers should be able to enjoy peace and privacy without the disturbance of unwanted calls interrupting their routines,” Attorney General Hill said. “Further, some of these calls are coming from scammers intent on stealing people’s identities or taking their money. We need stronger measures and better technologies aimed at stopping illegal robocalling.”

Since it was formed, the multistate group has had in-depth meetings with several major telecom companies. These productive meetings have led to greater information sharing about the technological capabilities currently in existence or in development to fight these calls.

Attorney General Hill and his colleagues are working to:

  • Develop a detailed understanding of what is technologically feasible to minimize unwanted robocalls and illegal telemarking
  • Engage the major telecom companies to encourage them to expedite the best possible solutions for consumers
  • Determine whether states should make further recommendations to the FCC
  • Educate consumers about current call-blocking options, and
  • Evaluate and coordinate future enforcement efforts against bad actors.

Anyone receiving unwanted robocalls or encountering suspected scams of any variety is encouraged to file a consumer complaint with the Office of the Attorney General at indianaconsumer.com or by calling 1-800-382-5516.

USI Women’s Basketball announces early signings

0
University of Southern Indiana Women’s Basketball announced that four incoming freshmen have signed national letters of intent to compete for Head Coach Rick Stein‘s Screaming Eagles in 2019-20. The list includes 5-foot-4 point guard Addisyn Blackwell (Bloomington, Indiana), 6-foot-0 power forward Hannah Haithcock (Washington Courthouse, Ohio), 6-foot-0 power forward Tara Robbe (Wildwood, Missouri) and 5-foot-11 shooting guard/small forward Lexi Thompson (Lafayette, Indiana).

Blackwell is currently a senior at Bloomington South High School in Bloomington, Indiana, where she earned varsity letters in basketball, golf, softball and track & field. She was named honorable mention All-State by the Indiana Basketball Coaches’ Association (IBCA) as well as an IHSAA Top 100 Underclassman as a junior in 2017-18 and also was an Indiana Junior All-Star

A three-time All-Conference Indiana and Herald Times All-Area selection, Blackwell was named the All-Area Player of the Year last season after leading BSHS in scoring, assists, steals and free throw percentage.

Haithcock is finishing her final year of prep basketball at Washington High School (Ohio) where she has earned varsity letters in basketball, track & field and volleyball.

A multiple-time All-District and All-Conference honoree in both basketball and volleyball, Haithcock garnered All-Ohio Division II Special Mention on the basketball court as a junior in 2017-18 after averaging 17 points, 9.7 rebounds and 1.5 blocked shots per game.

Robbe is in her final year at Lafayette High School (Missouri), where she has earned varsity letters in basketball and volleyball.

A two-time All-Conference and All-District performer, Robbe was named LHS’s Offensive Player of the Year in 2017 and the team MVP in 2018. She averaged 13.6 points per game as a junior in 2017-18 and has led the team in scoring, rebounding and assists the previous two seasons.

Thompson is currently a senior at Lafayette Central Catholic High School (Lafayette, Indiana), where she has earned varsity letters in basketball as well as first-team All-Hoosier Conference honors after averaging 12.4 points per game throughout her first three years of high school basketball. Thompson averaged 14.7 points and 3.3 rebounds per game as a junior in 2017-18 after averaging 14.0 points and 5.4 rebounds per appearance as a sophomore two years ago.

A member LCCH’s IHSAA Class 2A championship team as a freshman in 2016 and its sectional championship team in 2018, Thompson, who has recently surpassed the 1,000-point plateau for her career, has made 43 percent of her shots from behind the arc during her first three years, including 48 percent when she knocked down 79 of her 165 three-point attempts last season.

“We are excited to add these four young women to our family here at USI,” Stein said. “Every year, we lose great seniors and this year is no different. We have to fill needs at about every position and this class definitely helps do that.

“Addy, Tara, Hannah and Lexi all have had great success on the court and in the classroom and no doubt will make a huge impact here at the University of Southern Indiana,” Stein concluded.

USI returns to action December 18 at 6 p.m. when it travels to Warrensburg, Missouri, to take on defending national champion and current No. 7-ranked University of Central Missouri. The Eagles concluded their non-conference slate December 30 when they host 2017 national champion and current No. 1-ranked Ashland University.

Aces fall to Arkansas State in road contest

UE hosts Ball State on Sunday afternoon

Marty Hill had a career night on Tuesday, scoring 16 points while hauling in 6 rebounds, but 10-0 run by Arkansas State in the first half was key to the Red Wolves earning an 87-77 win over the University of Evansville men’s basketball team inside First National Bank Arena.

Hill was 5-of-10 from the field in the game before fouling out with 44 seconds left.  Leading the Purple Aces (4-4) was Shea Feehan. He hit six field goals, including four triples, to score 21 points; the final tally was also his career mark.  K.J. Riley scored 15.  Ty Cockfield scored a game-high 24 points for Arkansas State (3-5).

“I thought we came out and played well offensively, but could not carry that over to the defensive end,” UE head coach Walter McCarty said.  “I thought we missed some opportunities out there and have some things to improve on.”

Evansville knocked down its first three shots, including a pair from Shea Feehan, to jump out to a 7-2 advantage.  Arkansas State responded with back-to-back triples to go up 8-7.  UE wrestled the lead back by a score of 15-13, but ASU countered with an 8-0 stretch to go up 21-15.

The back-and-forth action continued with a pair of Marty Hill free throws put UE up 29-28 with 4:30 remaining in the first half.  That is when the Red Wolves had a 10-0 run that saw them take a 38-29 lead.  Jawaun Newton got the Aces back on track with a pair of free throws, but the rally by ASU continued.  The fifth trey of the game saw ASU go up 43-31 inside the final minutes.  Shea Feehan, who led the team with 10 first-half points, connected on two free throws to trim the ASU lead to 43-33 at the half.

Evan Kuhlman connected on a triple on Evansville’s first possession of the second half to cut the deficit to seven points.  His trey came after his squad made 1 of their first 10 tries from outside.  Ty Cockfield, who led everyone with 13 points in the opening 20 minutes, responded with his third long range shot to put ASU back up by ten.

ASU’s lead hovered around 10 points, but near the midway point of the latter period, Dainius Chatkevicius hit an and-one to cut the Red Wolves lead back to eight points at 57-49.  Just as fast as UE rallied, Arkansas State had one of their own when Grantham Gillard drained two consecutive 3-pointers to push their lead to 67-52, its largest advantage of the game.

Marty Hill connected from downtown 7:07 on the clock to cap off a 6-0 stretch that cut the ASU lead to nine points, but the game was put out of reach three minutes later when Tristin Walley hit his second triple to give Arkansas State a 77-63 lead.  Feehan did not let the Aces go down without a fight, hitting back-to-back treys in the final 90 seconds, but the deficit was too much to overcome as Arkansas State took the win by a final of 87-77.

First-half defensive effort give Eagles eighth straight win

University of Southern Indiana Women’s Basketball used a stifling defensive effort in the opening half to cruise past NAIA opponent Lindenwood University-Belleville, 75-42, Tuesday evening at the Physical Activities Center.

The Screaming Eagles (8-1) held the Lynx to just one first-quarter field goal and 3-of-24 (.111) shooting in the opening half en route to a 36-12 halftime advantage. USI used a 17-0 run that spanned the final three minutes of the first quarter and the first three minutes of the second period to essentially put the result of the contest out of question.

Lindenwood-Belleville (3-8) held its ground in the third period as each team scored 23 points, but a 16-7 fourth quarter that went in favor of USI led to the 33-point margin of victory.

Sophomore guard Emma DeHart (Indianapolis, Indiana) had 13 points, eight rebounds, four assists and four steals to lead the Eagles, while senior center Kacy Eschweiler (St. Charles, Missouri) added 12 points and eight rebounds.

USI also got 10 points, seven rebounds and a game-high five assists from senior guard Alex Davidson (Salem, Indiana), while junior guard Ashley Johnson (Louisville, Kentucky) and sophomore forward Imani Guy (Columbus, Indiana) added 10 and nine points, respectively.

Junior guard Brianna Mueller led the Lynx with a game-high 18 points.

The Eagles return to action December 18 at 6 p.m. when they travel to Warrensburg, Missouri, to take on defending national champion and current No. 7-ranked University of Central Missouri. USI hosts 2017 national champion and current No. 1-ranked Ashland University December 30 to close out its non-conference schedule.
