Deaconess Set to Launch Diabetes Prevention Program

Deaconess is preparing to launch a new program for people wanting to kick off the new year making healthier choices.

The hospital is gearing up to launch a diabetes prevention program set to begin in two weeks.

The program aims at preventing type two diabetes and will run for a full year free of charge. Those who choose to enroll in the program will learn how lifestyle choices can bring on type two diabetes and how small, but necessary, lifestyle changes can prevent it.

Officials say living a healthier lifestyle will also lower the risk of having a heart attack or stroke.

The program will start on January 15th from 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. and will be held in the Deaconess Clinic Downtown.

Click here to learn how to register for the program.

The Otters unveiled their 25th anniversary season logo. The logo commemorates the Otters’ 25 seasons in Evansville since joining the Frontier League in 1995. The Otters are the oldest active franchise in the Frontier League.

On June 15, 1995, the Otters hosted their Opening Night game against Richmond, falling in the first game in team history, 12-1.
Evansville finished their inaugural season 31-38 and sixth in the league standings.
Since 1995, the franchise has produced two Frontier League championships in 2006 and 2016, 10 postseason appearances, 1,056 wins becoming the first franchise in league history to reach 1,000 regular season wins in 2017, 75 Major League Baseball organization signees, two league Hall of Famers in Pete Pirman and Eric Massingham, and three no-hitters in franchise history.

Indiana lawmakers returning to Statehouse for 2019 session

Il for www.theindianalawyer.com

Indiana lawmakers are set to begin their four-month legislative session, facing a tight state budget picture and a possibly contentious debate over adopting a state hate crimes law.

The Indiana House and Senate will meet Thursday afternoon at the Statehouse in Indianapolis to start a session scheduled to last until late April.

The Republican-dominated Legislature must draft a new two-year budget to fund school districts, universities and state agencies such as the troubled Department of Child Services.

Indiana is one of just five states without laws specifically against crimes fueled by biases regarding race, religion and sexual orientation. Conservative legislators have blocked adoption of such an Indiana law for several years, although Republican Gov. Eric Holcomb says it is long overdue.

AG Curtis Hill: Latest court ruling is buzzkill for ‘First Church of Cannabis’

0

The end of 2018 brought bad news for the “First Church of Cannabis,” a group of marijuana enthusiasts who have spent much of the past three years arguing for the right to use pot as a matter of religious liberty.

Once again, Attorney General Curtis Hill has prevailed in turning back this group’s efforts to be exempted from Indiana’s anti-marijuana statutes.

On Friday Dec. 28, the Indiana Court of Appeals dismissed with prejudice the appeal of this “church,” explaining that the appellants failed to pay a transcript fee as ordered by the court. Further, the court stated, “Appellants have failed to show cause why this appeal should not be dismissed.”

Last year, these same marijuana enthusiasts failed to convince a Marion County court that they should be exempted from anti-marijuana statutes on the basis of religious freedom. They later failed to convince the court to reopen their case in light of the Right to Try Act, a recently-passed law that allows terminally ill patients to try investigational treatments.

Following this latest rejection by the Indiana Court of Appeals, the First Church of Cannabis could find itself with few remaining options.

“Laws against the possession, sale and use of marijuana are designed to protect the health, safety and well-being of Hoosiers statewide,” Attorney General Hill said. “Our courts have repeatedly upheld their validity. The devout worshippers of the First Church of Cannabis may find more fertile ground in another state to legally consume their favorite sacrament, but they won’t be lighting up in Indiana.”
