Nolan, Seward named OVC Runners to Watch, Eagles open season Friday at IU

0

EVANSVILLE, Ind.—University of Southern Indiana Men’s and Women’s Cross Country sophomores Alex Nolan (Evansville, Indiana) and Zoe Seward (Rochester, Indiana) have been named Ohio Valley Conference Runners to Watch in an announcement by the league office Wednesday.

The announcement comes two days before the Screaming Eagles open their 2024 campaign at the Sam Bell Invitational in Bloomington, Indiana. The women’s 4k is scheduled for 4 p.m. (CDT), while the men’s 6k follows with a 4:40 p.m. start time.

Both Nolan and Seward earned OVC Freshman of the Year honors in 2023 following strong performances throughout the season.

Nolan was USI’s number two finisher on the men’s squad throughout the season and is USI’s top returner after earning second-team All-OVC honors with a 10th-place finish at the OVC Championships. Senior Brady Terry (Philpot, Kentucky) also garnered second-team All-OVC honors thanks to his 13th-place finish at the OVC Championships last fall.

As a team, USI’s men are coming off a second-place finish at the 2023 OVC Championships. Sophomore Jackson Collman (Bethalto, Illinois) added a top-20 finish for the Eagles’ efforts a year ago and figures to be one of USI’s top returners, while senior Dylan Bland (Holland, Indiana) and sophomores Cole Hess (Cannelton, Indiana) and Landen Swiney (Du Quoin, Illinois) should provide depth to the Eagles’ lineup after finishing in USI’s top-seven at the OVC meet a year ago.

Seward emerged as USI’s top finisher on the women’s side by the end of the season. She earned first-team All-OVC honors with a fourth-place finish at the 2023 OVC Championships before claiming a conference title in the 10,000 meters at the 2024 OVC Outdoor Track & Field Championships.

The return of junior Micah Peals (Terre Haute, Indiana) will bolster the Eagles’ lineup after she earned second-team All-OVC honors with a 14th-place finish on the grass last season. Senior Audrey Comastri (Indianapolis, Indiana), who has been running well during the early-season workouts, also should make an impact after finishing 15th at the OVC Cross Country Championships last fall.

Two names that could challenge Seward at the top of the lineup late in the season are senior Cameron Hough (Olney, Illinois) and sophomore Ellie Hall (Ferdinand, Indiana). Hough, a two-time Division II All-American, was USI’s top runner for most of the 2023 cross country season before injury derailed her prior to the conference meet.

Hall, the sister of men’s runner Ethan Hall, is a transfer from Southern Illinois University (Carbondale), where she finished 13th at the 2023 Missouri Valley Conference Cross Country Championships and 64th at the NCAA Midwest Regional.

Other returners that figure to make an impact on the Eagles’ depth chart is sophomore Sara Livingston (Jasper, Indiana) and senior Katie Winkler (Santa Claus, Indiana). Both posted top-30 finishes at the OVC Championships last fall, helping the Eagles secure a second-place finish as a team.

This is Diaz Barragan’s fourth time earning the honor
ST LOUIS – For the fourth time in his collegiate career, senior forward Nacho Diaz Barragan captured Missouri Valley Conference Offensive Player of the Week honors on Tuesday.
In the first week of the 2024 season, the forward from Almeria, Spain exploded for three goals in two games. After missing the second half of the 2023 season with a meniscus injury, Diaz Barragan returned to the pitch in fine form against Bellarmine and Memphis. He scored the game-winning goal for the Aces against Bellarmine in the 71st minute as junior defender Nacho Diaz-Caneja’s (Coruna Spain / Oregon State) cross near the left sideline found Diaz Barragan’s head near the back post for the go-ahead goal.
Diaz Barragan also recorded his first brace of the season on Sunday evening in Memphis. Against the Tigers, the forward scored two straight goals in the 62nd and 73rd minutes. Diaz Barragan found his way around the Tigers goalkeeper after an initial blocked shot in the 62nd minute for his first unassisted goal of the season.
Just 11 minutes later Diaz Barragan scored his third goal of the season as fifth-year forward Kai Phillip took a free kick from the right line of the penalty area. Phillip’s free kick found Diaz Barragan just past the penalty arc where he buried the cross with his right foot into the bottom right corner of the net.
With three goals and six points in two games, Diaz Barragan leads the MVC in goals per game (1.50) and total goals while being second in points per game (3.00), total points, and shot accuracy (83.3%). Along with leading the MVC, Diaz Barragan is fourth in the nation in total goals, 11th in shots on goal per game (2.50), and 17th in points per game (2.50).
This is the fourth time Diaz Barragan has been named the MVC Offensive Player of the Week and his first since 2022. He was formerly named MVC Player of the Week on August 30th, 2022; September 20th, 2022; and October 25th, 2022.

Big inning dooms Otters in road trip opener

0

SCHAUMBURG, Ill. – One big inning led to the downfall of the Evansville Otters tonight in the series opener against the Schaumburg Boomers, with a final score of 8-4 at Wintrust Field.

Chasing a playoff spot, the Boomers (48-43) brought hot bats to the plate early and went after the Otters’ (41-51) pitching staff.

After Schaumburg scored a man in the first inning, a one-hour and 14 minute rain delay occurred in the away second. Returning from the break, the Boomers added seven more in the home half of the frame to bust the game open. It was highlighted by a grand slam by former Otter Anthony Calarco.

Trailing 8-0, Evansville jumped on the board in the third with a Pavin Parks RBI single. They added another pair in the sixth inning from Giovanni DiGiacomo’s two-RBI base hit to center field.

The final Otters run of the night was tallied in the eighth inning on a David Mendham sacrifice fly. Closing out their offensive display, the Boomers answered right back with another two runs.

Taking the loss as the starter, Chip Korbacher (1-1) went just one inning allowing six of the 10 runs. Ryan Wiltse pitched in four innings out of the pen, allowing two men to score, before Jon Beymer gave up the rest of the runs in three innings. For the Boomers, Aaron Glickstein (5-5) took the win, as he tossed four and two-third innings of two-run ball.

Delvin Zinn and Logan Brown each had 2-for-5 nights to lead the offense. The club outslugged Schaumburg nine hits to eight.

Evansville will look to even the series tomorrow and play spoiler to a Boomers team that just jumped into a playoff spot with tonight’s win. The Wednesday affair will begin at 6:30 p.m. CT. Coverage is available on the Otters Digital Network and FloBaseball.

United Senator Senator Mike Braun To Keynote CCO Annual Awards Luncheon On September 20, 2024

AUGUST 27, 2024

United States Senator Mike Braun will be the keynote speaker at the City-County Observer Community Service Awards Luncheon on September 20 at Bally’s in Evansville.

Braun grew up in Jasper, married his high school sweetheart, Maureen, and built a successful business that employs 1500 hundred of people nationally.

Under Braun’s leadership, Myer Distributing has become one of the industry leaders in auto parts distribution, and the company has averaged 22 percent growth since 2009. Throughout the growth of the business, Braun has insisted on keeping the headquarters in his hometown.

Before his successful run for the United States Senate in 2018, Braun served on the local school board and served as a State Representative. He is known as an advocate for conservative values. After graduating from Harvard, Braun moved back to Indiana and joined his father’s business manufacturing truck bodies for farmers. When the economy of the mid-1980s hit farmers hard and his father’s business nearly went under, Braun steered the business in the more lucrative direction of selling truck accessories.

The business subsequently grew from 15 employees to more than 300.[ In 1986, Braun and Daryl Rauscher acquired Meyer Body Inc., a manufacturer of truck bodies and distributor of truck parts and equipment.[Braun fully acquired the company in 1995 and renamed it Meyer Distributing in 1999. Braun is its president and CEO.[]In 2018, Braun’s personal finance disclosure listed assets worth between $35 million and $96 million.

On January 3, 2019, Braun was sworn in as the junior United States senator from Indiana by Vice President Mike Pence.

In May 2019, Braun was one of eight senators who voted against a $19.1 billion emergency aid package for states and territories that endured hurricanes, floods, and fires. Braun said the disaster assistance process was “just another path for runaway spending on unrelated projects.” Despite his opposition, the package was enacted with bipartisan support and President Trump’s approval.[22]

Braun supported Trump’s decision to withdraw American troops from northern Syria in October 2019. As a result, in that month, Turkey launched a military offensive against the American-allied Kurds in that area. After that, Braun called Trump “smart”; questioned why the U.S. should “be in the crossfire” between Turkey and the Kurds; and called the idea that ISIS would recover strength as a result of the conflict “an assumption”.[24]

In December 2019, Braun said that the impeachment inquiry against Donald Trump had been a “disaster for Democrat

The Dominion Mixed-Use Development to Rise in Western Warrick County

AUGUST 28, 2024

EVANSVILLE, Ind. (August 27, 2024) – The Evansville Regional Economic Partnership (E-REP), in collaboration with the Southwest Indiana Regional Development Authority (RDA), is pleased to announce the approval of a matching grant from the Indiana Economic Development Corporation (IEDC) for The Dominion, a new mixed-use development at the intersection of State Road 66 and Grimm Road. This project, the first in the Evansville Region to receive funding from the READI 2.0 program, will feature 150 market-rate apartments, a five-story commercial building with ground-floor retail and dining, and a public plaza designed for community activities.

“Indiana, in partnership with our regions statewide, is making unprecedented investments in our local communities to improve the lives of Hoosiers today and tomorrow,” said Gov. Holcomb. “In Southwest Indiana, READI is creating new, centrally located community destinations that add modern opportunities to live, work, study, play and stay. I’m confident the impacts of The Dominion and of READI 1.0 and 2.0 will create lasting positive changes in Warrick County, making southwest Indiana a premier high-quality of place for business, talent and families to grow for generations to come.”

Located along the Warrick Wellness Trail and near the upcoming Ohio Township Park, The Dominion will further enhance the area’s growth and accessibility to recreational spaces.

“The Dominion builds on the momentum started with Ohio Township Park, a READI 1.0 project, and the investment Warrick County has made in the Wellness Trail,” said RDA President Beth McFadin Higgins. “This development will connect new residents to employment opportunities, recreational amenities, shopping, and dining.”

Phase one of The Dominion will include:

  • 150 contemporary high-amenity market-rate apartments.
  • A five-story commercial building with ground-floor restaurant and retail spaces.
  • An outdoor community area linked to the Warrick Wellness Trail, offering a space for events and activities.

Architectural and engineering work will begin this autumn. Construction of phase one is scheduled to begin in September 2025, with completion in summer, 2027.  The $71.5 million live-work-play development is primarily funded by private developer contributions, with additional support from a $5 million READI 2.0 grant and $8.46 million in TIF support from Warrick County. Phase two of the project will bring additional residential units, a hotel, and more restaurant and retail spaces.

“Southwestern Indiana is eager for a live-work-play mixed-use development that brings a big-city vibe,” said Scion Real Estate Development Managing Partner Philip Rawley. “With its prime location near Interstate 69 and connectivity to the entire region, The Dominion aligns with Warrick County’s growth strategy and will attract both residents and businesses.”

“This investment will enhance the quality of place and opportunity throughout our region, especially with its high-quality, contemporary design,” said Josh Armstrong, Chief Economic Development Officer at E-REP. “I expect the available homes and commercial spaces to lease up quickly, and I look forward to Scion Real Estate announcing phase two of The Dominion shortly.”
