MEET OUR NEWLY ELECTED COUNTY COMMISSIONER JEFF HATFIELD

1
MEET THE NEWLY ELECTED COUNTY COMMISSIONER JEFF HATFIELD
In November 2018, Jeff  Hatfield was elected as Vanderburgh County Commissioner of District 2 (D).  On January 1, 2019, Mr. Hatfield will be sworn in as the next County Commissioner of District 2.
As a licensed commercial and residential contractor, Jeff Hatfield is the owner and president of Core Contractors Inc. His duties and responsibilities include direct management of all employees, developing estimates, specifications, contract negotiations, and schedules. He is responsible for all customer contacts and relations as well. He has successfully owned and operated a small business for over thirty years.
Outside of Core Contractors Inc, Jeff loves spending time with his family and actively participating in his community. He is also an active member of St. Anthony Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus. A few of his past affiliations include serving as president of the Evansville Water and Sewer Utility Board, president of the Southern Indiana Builders Association, and vice-president of the Indiana Builders Association. He was born and raised in Evansville, where he graduated from Reitz Memorial Catholic High School and received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Evansville.
Starting the day after Mr. Hatfield is officially is sworn in as County Commissioner his first quarter priorities will be:
1) Working with my fellow Commissioners and County Council members in a more collaborative manner, that will and can foster better planning.
2) Participate with my fellow Commissioners and Council members in a final decision on the Jail Expansion that will also include strengthening programs that help offenders get off drugs and help those with mental health issues get the help they need.
3) Establish a stronger Road Improvement Program that puts repair and replacement of existing roads ahead of new road construction.
4) Will work to improve the MBE/WBE policy for Vanderburgh County Construction projects.
Jeff’ is also committed to building a firm foundation for both safe neighborhoods and economic growth in Vanderburgh County.  His focus will be on maintaining and improving the infrastructure, making Vanderburgh County more attractive to future economic growth.  He wants to grow jobs locally and make sure that those jobs provide a good living wage and opportunities for advancement. Jeff supports the new jail expansion, but also believes it is equally important to invest our efforts in treating the underlying causes of crime—mental health and drug addiction.
Jeff Hatfield has proven to be one heck of a campaigner. He is well known and is respected by people from both political parties. It’s obvious that Mr. Hatfield isn’t a politician and we like that. His message of economic growth, dedication to the taxpayers, and not to a political party has gotten the voters attention. We are also very pleased that Mr. Hatfield has openly expressed that he believes in term limits.
We like that Mr. Hatfield because is very conservative and is an extremely successful businessman. Hatfield is not only a man of faith but is also a good family man.
We believe that Jeff Hatfield will govern in a non-partisan manner while using his good business skills and conservative values.  Jeff follows his heart and his head when it comes to politics.
The core values that he so admired in his historical political heroes of yesteryear fueled his desire to find a place in public service in which he could do the most good for his neighbors throughout Vanderburgh County.
Mr. Hatfield told the City-County Observer that he has “He has spent thirty years helping people solve their problems. My strong suit is that if I don’t know the answer, I know where to find the answer. I want to be the commissioner for the people in our county who don’t know or have someone to call to solve their problem. I want to be that commissioner that helps those people. Jeff’s main reason for running is perhaps a selfish one; he wants his children and grandchildren to make their homes in a safe and economically prosperous Vanderburgh County.

New Laws Coming in 2019

New laws are coming to you in the new year and there could be bad news if you’re looking to get divorced or if you own a bump stock.

Starting in 2019, alimony will no longer be tax deductible. The change is only affecting couples who divorce in 2019 and after.

Some legal officials say the impact could cause the partner who earns less to get a lower settlement.

There are also changes coming to gun owners. There will be a ban on bump stocks nationwide.

The devices allow semi-automatic weapons to fire like automatics. It will be illegal to possess them beginning in late March.

Legal experts say you’ll either have to surrender your bump stock or destroy it if you own one.

Law Enforcement Offers Advice on How to Drink Responsibly During New Years

Many people will take part in some type of celebration to ring in 2019 and alcohol is often a part of those celebrations. While law enforcement is aware people will be drinking, they say that increases the awareness of those who are going out to celebrate.

“For some reason, most people are more responsible on New Year’s eve I think its basically because their awareness level is so much higher. So for that reason we really have very few problems on new years eve,” said Indiana State Trooper Todd Ringle. He says they do expect to encounter people who made the choice to drink and drive.

“You know last year during the new years eve and the first part of the new years day statewide we had 50 crashes that were alcohol-related from those crashes 17 people were injured but we didn’t have any fatalities,” said Ringle.

Bars in the Tri-State like Lamasco are taking precaution when it comes to those coming out on new years eve with the intention of indulging in drinking.

“We’re just gonna be extra diligent on what we are serving people, we’ll be paying closer attention. People may have gone out to dinner and started celebrating a little early, so they may have had a couple of drinks before they came here,” said Lamasco Manager Chris Passage.

“If you know you are gonna be drinking make sure you have a plan before you take that first drink. right now we have uber, lift…Logan’s Promise which is a great organization that if you call them they will come to wherever you’re at. They will make sure you get home safe, so there’s a lot of different options for people to do. There is no reason for anyone to drink and drive,” said Ringle.
