Indiana Dominates Weekly Big Ten Swimming and Diving Honors

The No. 3/11-ranked Indiana University men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams dominated the weekly Big Ten honors, the league announced on Wednesday.

The Hoosier men swept all three awards, as Zach Apple was named Swimmer of the Week, Andrew Capobianco was named Diver of the Week and Michael Brinegar was named Freshman of the Week. On the women’s side, Jessica Parratto was named Diver of the Week.

Apple was dominant for IU in the team’s win over No. 24-ranked Purdue last Saturday, winning three individual events and one relay. The senior touched the wall first in the 50 freestyle (20.09), 100 freestyle (44.27) and 200 freestyle (1:38.77). Apple also helped Indiana win the men’s 400 freestyle relay in a time of 2:57.23.

Against Purdue last Saturday, Parratto continued her winning ways, taking first in both the women’s 1-meter and platform dives with NCAA Zones qualifying scores. The Dover, N.H. native won the 1-meter with a total of 311.70 and the platform dive with a mark of 316.65.

Capobianco had a career showing in the 1-meter against Purdue, winning with a NCAA Zones qualifying score and personal-best mark of 424.95. The sophomore also recorded a Zones score, placing second in the platform dive with a score of 366.98.

Brinegar continued his stellar freshman season, winning both the men’s 500 freestyle and 1,000 freestyle against the Boilermakers. Brinegar touched the wall with a winning time of 4:26.95 in the 500 free and a mark of 9:07.43 in the 1,000 free.

The No. 3/11 Hoosiers will be back in action on Friday, Feb. 1 when the team hosts No. 8/16 Louisville on Senior Day at the Counsilman Billingsley Aquatic Center in Bloomington, Ind. Diving gets underway at 12:15 p.m. ET with swimming starting at 2:00 p.m. The meet will be streamed live on BTN Plus starting at 2:00 p.m. ET.

USI’s CubeSat satellite to be deployed at 7:40 a.m. Thursday, January 31

A satellite designed and built by University of Southern Indiana undergraduate students is scheduled for deployment into orbit from the International Space Station at approximately 7:40 a.m. Thursday, January 31. USI students will monitor the deployment from the UNITE Mission Operations Center in the Business and Engineering Center (BEC) on the USI campus, and anticipate receiving the satellite’s first transmission as early as 8:30 a.m.

The UNITE CubeSat satellite, built to measure plasma levels in the lower ionosphere, was delivered to the International Space Station on a SpaceX Dragon cargo ship on Tuesday, December 7, 2018. Once deployed, it will be the first operational satellite in orbit built by an Indiana higher education institution. The CubeSat will also measure its own internal and skin temperatures through the mission. It is expected to orbit the Earth for 15 months before returning through the Earth’s atmosphere, during which time its orbital decay will be measured.

UNITE was selected for flight by NASA’s CubeSat Launch Initiative (CSLI) and was one of two satellites launched for the Educational Launch of Nanosatellites-21 (ELaNa-21) mission complement, sponsored by the NASA Launch Services Program.The other was from San Jose State University. USI will also share a deployment date with CubeSats from Aarhus University in Denmark and John Hopkins University Applied Physics Lab.

Media members are invited to the BEC to cover the deployment – a live video feed of the deployment will be available via WebEx. While media are not able to be in the UNITE Mission Operations Center with the USI UNITE CubeSat team members during deployment, we plan to offer a live feed from the Mission Operations Center as well.

Members of the student team as well as the project’s faculty advisor Dr. Glen Kissel, associate professor of engineering, will be available for interview between time of the deployment at 7:40 a.m. and the time the initial transmission is expected at 8:30 a.m. This interview time is tentative and may be adjusted depending on deployment variables. All live feeds and interviews will take place in Room 1035 in the Business and Engineering Center, A map of campus that includes the BEC and nearby parking lots can be found at USI.edu/map. Please arrive by at least 7:30 a.m. if you plan to cover the deployment.

Investiture ceremony for Judge Hanlon Friday

Judge James Patrick Hanlon, the newest addition to the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Indiana, will be formally sworn in at a special ceremony starting at 2 p.m. Friday in the Birch Bayh Federal Building and United States Courthouse. Southern Indiana Chief Judge Jane Magnus-Stinson will preside over the en banc ceremony in the William E. Steckler Ceremonial Courtroom.

Hanlon was confirmed by a voice vote in the U.S. Senate in October 2018. He filled the last open seat on the busy district court, filling the vacancy that was created in July 2018 when Judge William Lawrence took senior status.

“The court is delighted to have Judge Hanlon on the bench,” Chief Judge Jane Magnus-Stinson said. “He is an immensely talented attorney and his experience and success in private practice, with the United States Attorney’s Office, and as a law clerk make him the perfect person to fill the latest vacancy on the court.”

Hanlon has already taken his place on the court. His caseload is drawn from the Indianapolis and Terre Haute divisions. In addition to drawing newly assigned cases, he has been reassigned cases from other judges.

“The addition of Judge Hanlon brings the Southern District of Indiana back to its full complement of five full-time district judges and we are grateful to be at full strength once more,” Magnus-Stinson said.

Along with the five full-time judges, the court also has Lawrence and Senior Judge Sarah Evans Barker, who continue to carry heavy caseloads.

Prior to his appointment as district judge, Hanlon was a partner in the Indianapolis office of Faegre Baker Daniels LLP, where he served as co-chair of the firm’s white-collar defense and investigations practice. Hanlon became a partner at the firm’s predecessor, Baker & Daniels LLP, in 2006.

From 2001 to 2006, Hanlon served as an Assistant United States Attorney for the Southern District of Indiana. He was also a law clerk to the Honorable Robert L. Miller of the United States District Court for the Northern District of Indiana from 1997 to 1998. Hanlon was in private practice with Seyfarth Shaw LLP in Chicago from 1996 to 1997, and again after his clerkship, from 1998 until his move to Indianapolis in 2001.

A native of Evanston, Illinois, Hanlon earned a B.A. from DePauw University in 1992. In 1996, he earned his J.D., magna cum laude, from Valparaiso University Law School, where he served as articles editor of the Valparaiso University Law Review.

Child Neglect/ Criminal Recklessness

Evansville Police arrested 19 year old Dakita Darrett on Child Neglect and Criminal Recklessness charges during a family dispute call on Tuesday evening.

Officers were called to 15 S. Bedford around 7:30pm because Darrett was arguing with her mother. Darrett was upset about some missing marijuana and had confronted her mother. During the confrontation, Darrett said she was going to leave the house with her 2 year old son. Her mother objected due to the extreme cold weather.

While officers where in the house, a pit bull had been placed in his cage. The dog was excited and barking loudly due to the presence of the officers. An occupant of the home had covered the cage with a dark blanket in an effort o to calm the dog. 

While officers were on scene, Darrett ignored them and refused to cooperate. She then took her 2 year old outside into the 19 degree weather and left him unattended while she went back into the house. Officers told Darrett her son was alone outside, but she ignored them. Officers then went out and retrieved the 2 year old. 

When officers brought her 2 year old back into the house, Darrett intentionally released the dog from the cage. The dog went straight for an officer and bit him on the forearm. 

Darrett was placed into custody for child neglect and criminal recklessness. During the incident, Darrett was on her cellphone and was indifferent to the danger her child was in or the harm the dog caused when she let him out of the cage.

 

Auto Theft Arrest

Evansville Police arrested 43 year old Charles Tate on auto theft charges after he failed to return a rental truck for several weeks.

Tate used a credit card to rent a truck from the eastside Home Depot on December 28, 2018. The contract was for a 1 day rental. Tate failed to return the truck and refused to return it after several request from Home Depot. When Home Depot tried to extend the contract by using Tate’s credit card information, the card was declined. On January 16th, Home Depot reported the truck stolen. 

Officers located the stolen truck in the 400 block of E Virginia on January 29th. Officers located Tate near the truck and he was taken into custody. Officers also found narcotics in the truck.

Tate was arrested for Auto Theft and Possession of Methamphetamine.
