Men’s basketball drops midweek game at Indiana State

UE looks to right the ship against Southern Illinois

 

Dainius Chatkevicius tied his career mark with 12 points on Wednesday evening as the University of Evansville men’s basketball team dropped an 85-62 game against Indiana State inside the Hulman Center.

Chatkevicius paced the Purple Aces (10-14, 4-7 MVC) with his 12 points; he was 4-for-6 from the field and knocked down four free throws.  K.J. Riley scored 11 while Marty Hill posted 10.

Indiana State (12-11, 4-7 MVC) was led by an 18-point effort from Cooper Neese.  Neese was 4-for-5 from long range on the evening.  Tyreke Key added 15 for the Sycamores.

It was a slow start on the offensive side for the Purple Aces, who found themselves in a 13-3 hole midway through the first half. Evansville was 1-11 from the field to start the game.  Jawaun Newton had UE’s first bucket of the night before an and-one by Shea Feehan cut into the deficit, making it a 13-6 game.

From there, the Sycamores took control.  Another triple pushed the lead to double figures before the fourth trey of the evening for ISU made it a 26-11 lead.  The Sycamores were 4-for-5 from long range to begin the game.  Indiana State continued its hot shooting, heading to the break with a 39-17 lead.  The 17 points for the Aces was their lowest scoring half of the season.

The first basket of the second half belonged to Indiana State as they drilled their sixth triple of the night and would push the lead out to 27 points (56-29) inside of 14 minutes remaining.  Evansville battled back as Marty Hill notched a pair of 3-pointers to get back within 22, but three technical helped ISU push the lead back out and they would cruise to the 85-62 victory.

Evansville finished the night shooting 36.2% while the Sycamores finished at 54.2%.  ISU finished the night with a 41-28 edge on the boards and were 9-of-15 from beyond the arc.

UE remains on the road this weekend, facing Southern Illinois on Saturday inside SIU Arena.  Tip will be at 7 p.m. in Carbondale.

We hope that today’s “IS IT TRUE” will provoke honest and open dialogue concerning issues that we, as responsible citizens of this community, need to address in a rational and responsible way?

IS IT TRUE that earlier this week the Vanderburgh County Commissioners unanimously approved (3-0) an MOU (Memorandum of Understanding) with American Structure Point so they can start designing the new addition to the Vanderburgh County Jail? …this MOU releases $500,000 to AmericanStructure Point so they can start the Architectural and Engineering work on the new addition to the jail?  …that AmericanStructure Point has approximately 120 days to finalize a mutually agreed upon jail design? …yesterday the Vanderburgh County Council also approved this funding request?  …It’s great to see a consensus among the County Commissioners and County Council in the funding request to begin the design work on the new addition to the Vanderburgh County jail? …we also would like to thank Vanderburgh County Commissioners Ben Shoulders and Jeff Hatfield, Sherriff Dave Wedding, and the Vanderburgh County Building Authority Director, Dave Rector for the outstanding work they have done on this project so far? …we also commend all parties for agreeing that American StructurePoint should do the Engineering and Architectural design work on the new addition on the jail?

IS IT TRUE last year it was announced that the National Gridiron League newest addition will be the Indiana Firebirds from Evansville, Indiana?  …it was also announced that the Indiana Firebirds of Evansville Indiana will play there indoors arena football home games at Ford Center beginning in March of 2019?  …that last year Scott Schoenike, the Executive Director of the Ford Center told the Courier and Press; “that he has been in conversations with several leagues during the past few years but waited for the right match.”  that Schoenike also said; “that the city believe they have found one in the National Gridiron League”? ….that a lot of people are looking forward to watching Arena Football at the Ford Center?….we wonder why we haven’t seen any advanced marketing effort by the Ford Center in promoting the Evansville Indiana Firebirds first home game in March 2019 at the Ford Center?

IS IT TRUE that there was recently a patronage article online about the value that the downtown Doubletree is reportedly creating?…there is strength in numbers and just because some of the supporters of the subsidized edifice are cheerleading does not mean the numbers are working?…when real numbers showing over 65% occupancy at paying rates of $125 per night are made public, the downtown Doubletree will have proven to be a viable unsubsidized hotel?…until then articles touting its potential are nothing but fluff?…the same meaningless cheerleading went on with the Ford Center until it became blatantly obvious that the “it will pay for itself from day one” claims were nothing but hot air from aspiring former Mayor seeking a higher office?

IS IT TRUE we wonder why the former owner of the Evansville Iceman Hockey didn’t send Mayor Winnecke a thank you note to him for forcing him to leave town? …it’s obvious that the Evansville Thunderbolts are losing money and Ron Geary’s Jacksonville, Fla. IceMen is doing extremely well financially? …that the Jacksonville IceMen home games average attendance is around 6,000 patrons per game and are ranked 3rd in attendance out of the 27 teams in the ECHL?  …the Evansville Thunderbolts home game attendance count is somewhere in the 2,000 range?   …when the Evansville IceMen played at the Ford Center they paid around $10,000 a game and it’s been reported that the Evansville Thunderbolts pays a $1,000 for each home game?

IS IT TRUE that on page 2 article 5 of the federal indictment of Stephanie Tenbarge for stealing from Echo Housing it clearly states that all checks over $600 required two signatures?…that the signatures required for checks over $600 would be Stephanie Tenbarge and a member of the Echo Housing Board of Directors that was not named?…this begs the question about how many checks were written for over $600 and who was the second signature on those checks?…any board member who signed such checks for goods, services, or real estate taxes that assisted Ms. Tenbarge of allegedly defrauding Echo Housing should submit to questioning?  …attached is the link of the Federal indictment of the former ECHO HOUSING Director Stephanie Tenbarge Indictment.
IS IT TRUE that the ECHO HOUSING spin doctors are working overtime to convince the general public that all is well since the former Executive Director has been indicted for fraud? …we wonder how the ECHO HOUSING Board of Directors is going to replenish the $150,000 plus of missing money from the agency coffers?  …we predict if the  ECHO Housing Board of Directors try to collect money from the insurance company who carries their employee fraud insurance policy they will quickly realize that everything isn’t as rosy as their spin doctors are telling people?
IS IT TRUE that Bryan Bennett is doing the marketing and social media work for the Alex Burton campaign for 4th Ward City Council?
IS IT TRUE that our GOP “Mole” tell us that the local Republican party may have a contested primary race in the At-Large City Council race? …we are told that the party movers and shakers are really upset with the possibility of having a contested race in the Republican primary?
IS IT TRUE that the Political Director of Mayor Winnecke was recently arrested for driving under the influence?  …he has been fired by the Winnecke For Mayor campaign manager?  …recently the head coach of the Evansville Thunderbolts was also arrested for driving under the influence but was not fired?  …he was suspended from coaching for one week? …we always been told that “What’s Good For The Goose Is Good For The Gander?”
IS IT TRUE we been informed that a candidate for the Evansville City Council has had the crime-fighting “Guardian” van sitting right in front of his apartment for a while?  …a friend of the individual running for City Council tells us that his buddy has no idea why the Evansville Police Department decided to park the “Guardian” van in front of his apartment because he has no knowledge that his area has a problem with crime?
Todays“Readers Poll” question is: Did the Mayor make a major mistake when he didn’t do everything in his power to convince the Evansville IceMen to stay in Evansville?

County Council Remove EVPL Board Members Over Drag Queen Story Hour

The vote was 6 to 1 to replace former Evansville Vanderburgh Public Library secretary Barbara Williams.

Her four-year term expired, but instead of starting a new term County leaders want to bring in someone new.

Some Evansville community members say the Evansville Vanderburgh Public Library board needs an overhaul.

The Drag Queen story hour scheduled for later this month has sparked petitions both for and against the event.

“6,000 provable Evansville residents have signed a petition to stop drag queen story hour,” says Steve Ary.

Those expressing concern say they’re troubled over the dialogue at the drag queen story hour.

“We don’t stop Santa Claus story hour because some people reject to it religiously. You know the same is with Halloween,” says Tri-State Alliance Founder Wally Paynter.

“This program is not Santa Claus story hour. This is not a debate of lifestyles,” says Ary.

Others say they want to reject a divisive program and the agenda of those responsible for bringing it to the taxpayer-funded library.

“This is an adult sex-based cross-dressing decision designed to confuse and influence children into making those same self adult sex-based decision before they can ever attend a sex education class,” says Ary.

Vanderburgh County Council appoints the EVPL members and voted to have Richard Clements replace Barbara Williams as secretary.

County Council members say the replacement is for the betterment of the library.

“The board needs to be more engaged in the day to day operations and what is going on there and stuff as far as setting policy and the activities that are going on there. Long range planning and strategy and stuff for the library and where it is going in the future,” say Vanderburgh County Council member Tom Shetler.

Community members say they’re also concerned about policies regarding background checks at EVPL.

Right now the Drag Queen story hour is still scheduled to take place February 23rd.

According to officials, the U.S. Air Force F-16 Viper Demonstration Team is returning for this year’s show.

The event runs September 13th through the 15th at the Owensboro Daviess County Regional Airport. The air show will start over the Ohio River on Saturday and Sunday, September 14th & 15th.
