Men’s basketball battles but falls late at Bradley

0

UE returns home Wednesday for Senior Day against SIU

Trailing by ten points with four minutes remaining, the University of Evansville men’s basketball team got within one tally in the final minute, but Bradley was able to escape with a 63-61 win on Saturday inside Carver Arena.

“Our guys did not give up, they made some good plays and kept on battling,” UE head coach Walter McCarty said.  “We lost that game in the last two minutes of the first half; we sent them to the line too much.  If we keep them off the line, we win this game.”

“It was fun to see how we kept on fighting, we did a lot of good things today.”

K.J. Riley was the Aces’ (10-19, 4-12 MVC) leading scorer with 13 points.  He was 5-for-11 from the floor.  Local native Shea Feehan recorded 11 points on the day.  He hit two triples and three free throws.  Darrell Brown was the top scorer in the game, finishing with 19 points while hitting nine free throws for the Braves (16-13, 8-8 MVC).

A quick start saw the Aces jump out to an 8-0 lead just over two minutes in.  K.J. Riley hit a floater to get the scoring started before Marty Hill and Evan Kuhlman posted triples to give UE the lead just over two minutes in.

Bradley responded with a 10 stretch while holding UE to 1-of-7 shooting over the next five minutes.  Noah Frederking ended the stretch with a steal and runout to tie the game before Kuhlman’s second triple completed a 5-0 spurt.  The Braves rallied to tie it up at 13-13 before Noah Frederking knocked down a triple to put Evansville back in front.  The Aces extended their edge to 25-19 on a Riley layup with 3:14 remaining.

Over the final three minutes of the half, the Braves took control, scoring 11 in a row to take a 30-25 lead into halftime.  BU hit three of its final four attempts while holding UE to 1-for-8 to wrap up the first 20 minutes.  Evansville attempted 21 triples in the first half.

After a Bradley bucket extended its run to 13-0 in the opening possession of the second half, John Hall hit his first from long range to make it a 32-28 game.  The Braves came right back, scoring eight in a row to push the lead to a game-high 40-28.

Peoria native Shea Feehan got Evansville right back into the contest.  He connected from long range before getting fouled on another attempt from outside as the Aces cut the Bradley lead to two points – 44-42 – midway through the second half.  The Braves were able to rebound and push their lead back to 61-51 with four minutes left in the game.  Riley helped UE get closer as his layup and free throws, coupled with a Kuhlman three, cut the BU lead to 61-58 with one minute left.

Another Riley bucket made it a 61-60 game with 29 ticks on the clock.  Following a free throw make, the Aces had the ball down two.  A missed triple gave the ball back to Bradley as they were able to hang on for the 63-61 victory.

Evansville outshot Bradley by a 38.6%-32.7% margin, but the Braves had a 41-35 rebounding edge.  Kuhlman, Frederking and Dainius Chatkevicius had solid outings for UE.  Kuhlman tallied nine points, all coming via the long ball.  Frederking notched eight points while Chatkevicius had eight points and four rebounds.

On Wednesday, the Aces will play their final home game of the season against Southern Illinois with tip set for 6 p.m.  It will mark Senior Day when the program recognizes its class of Marty Hill, Dainius Chatkevicius. Shea Feehan and Jared Chestnut.

Davidson’s career effort helps Eagles to Senior Day win

0

Senior guard Alex Davidson (Salem, Indiana) had a Senior Day to remember Saturday as she finished with a career-high 25 points and six assists to lead University of Southern Indiana Women’s Basketball to an 80-73 Great Lakes Valley Conference victory over the University of Indianapolis Saturday afternoon at the Physical Activities Center.

Davidson had 12 points in the first half, including nine in the first period, as a 15-2 run helped the Screaming Eagles race out to a 41-29 halftime advantage.

USI (18-8, 11-5 GLVC) shot 55.2 percent (16-29) from the field and 44.4 percent (4-9) from downtown in the first 20 minutes as it established control of the contest.

UIndy (9-17, 3-13 GLVC), however, surged back into the contest in the third quarter, using a 22-10 run to take a brief 52-51 lead late in the period.

Junior guard Ashley Johnson (Louisville, Kentucky), though, scored on a quick layup to give the lead back to USI and sophomore forward Imani Guy (Columbus, Indiana) scored a bucket to end the quarter, giving USI a 55-52 lead heading into the final 10 minutes.

The Eagles continued their momentum into the fourth quarter as Guy scored on a quick layup to extend their advantage to five points. Sophomore guard Emma DeHart (Indianapolis, Indiana) hit a three-pointer with nine minutes to play to put the Eagles up, 60-52, while a basket by senior center Kacy Eschweiler (St. Charles, Missouri) followed by a Guy free throw with seven-and-a-half minutes to play capped off an 12-0 run that gave the Eagles an 11-point lead.

Davidson’s three-pointer with just under five minutes to play followed by a pair of free throws put USI up 70-57, while her three-pointer with one-and-a-half minutes left on the clock essentially ended any chance of a UIndy comeback.

Final Game at the PAC
USI Women’s Basketball not only closed USI’s regular-season home schedule but it was an end to an era as the Eagles played their last-ever game at the PAC. USI will begin playing in the brand new Screaming Eagles Arena in 2019-20 after calling the PAC home for the previous 39 years.

Seniors honored
USI’s seniors came off the court with just under 17 seconds to play to a standing ovation. Davidson, Eschweiler, forward/center Mikayla Rowan(Brazil, Indiana) and guard Milana Matias (Klaipeda, Lithuania) were honored after the game as part of the Senior Day festivities.

Statistical leaders
In addition to Davidson’s game-high 25 points, the Eagles got 16 points and six boards from Guy as well as 16 points and a nine rebounds from DeHart. Eschweiler added 14 points and five rebounds.

Junior guard Laura Thomas had 21 points to lead the Greyhounds, while sophomore guard Taylor Drury chipped in 15 points.

USI visits the University of Illinois Springfield Thursday at 5:30 p.m. before ending the regular-season next Saturday against McKendree University in Lebanon, Illinois.

Big innings lead to USI Softball sweep

0

University of Southern Indiana Softball erupted for a combined 22 runs Saturday as it swept a pair of Midwest Region games at Grand Park. The Screaming Eagles rallied from an 8-0 deficit to defeat Northwood University, 15-9, in the opener before coming back from a pair of one-run deficits to defeat Tiffin University, 7-4, in their second game.

Freshman utility player Kat Mueller (Evansville, Indiana) went a combined 4-of-8 at the plate with three doubles, a triple and five RBIs to lead the Eagles offensively, while senior catcher Lindsey Barr (Owensboro, Kentucky) had a home run and a triple. Junior outfielder Allison Schubert(Nicholasville, Kentucky) was 3-of-6 with three RBIs, while junior pitcher Jennifer Leonhardt (Louisville, Kentucky) earned a save and a win on the day.

The Eagles (6-4), winners of four straight games, return to action next Saturday at 8 a.m. (CST) when they take on Cedarville University in The Spring Games in Clermont, Florida.

USI 15, Northwood (1-3) 9
In danger of being run ruled and down to their final three outs, the Eagles erupted for 12 runs in the top of the fifth inning to not only extend the game, but take a four-run advantage heading into the bottom of the fifth.

Northwood scored four runs in the top of the first and four more in the second to grab a commanding 8-0 lead. USI, meanwhile, struggled to get any offense going as it had just three hits through four innings before going into the fifth inning in need of a run just to keep the game alive.

Barr’s triple to begin the fifth ignited the Eagles’ offense, which sent 17 batters to the plate. USI racked up eight hits and got RBIs from six different players, including three from Mueller and two apiece from Schubert, senior outfielder/pitcher Caitlyn Bradley (Forest, Indiana) and freshman pitcher Elissa Brown (Brownsburg, Indiana).

Leonhardt also had an RBI in the inning, as did senior second baseman Claire Johnson (Pittsboro, Indiana) and sophomore outfielder Alicia Webb(Elberfeld, Indiana).

After a Northwood run in the bottom of the fifth cut the Eagles’ cushion to three runs, Barr answered with a two-run home run in the sixth to steal any momentum away from the Timberwolves. Junior shortstop Taylor Ricketts (Georgetown, Kentucky) capped off USI’s score-fest with an RBI-double in the seventh.

Brown (1-1) earned her first collegiate win in the circle after holding the Timberwolves to just one run off four hits in two innings of work. Leonhardt (1) came in to earn her first save of the year as she held Northwood to just one hit throughout three scoreless innings.

USI 7, Tiffin (3-2) 4
The Eagles scored three times in the bottom of the third inning to erase a 1-0 deficit; then scored four more times in the fifth to dig out of a 4-3 hole and earn their fourth straight win.

After allowing a score in the top of the third inning, USI took advantage of a pair of one-out walks and two passed balls to score its first three runs. Mueller had an RBI-double to tie the score at 1-1, then scored, along with Johnson, from second base on the second passed ball of the inning.

Tiffin responded with three tallies in the fifth inning to retake the lead, but an RBI-triple by Mueller in the last half of the fifth quickly pulled the Eagles even at 4-4. Mueller scored two batters later on a sacrifice fly by Schubert, while an RBI-triple by Ricketts and a run-scoring single by freshman catcher Courtney Schoolcraft (Crest Hill, Illinois) put the Eagles in the driver’s seat with a three-run cushion.

Leonhardt (4-1) earned the complete-game win in the circle after giving up four runs, three earned, off seven hits. She struck out four batters and issued just one walk in the victory.
