Hoosiers Qualify Four Individuals, Relay for Friday Night Finals at NCAA Championships

The No. 17-ranked Indiana University women’s swimming and diving team continued competition at the 2018 NCAA Championships on Friday morning at the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center in Austin, Texas. IU qualified four individuals for finals on Friday night, as well as the 200 medley relay.

 

Heading into Friday night, the Hoosiers sit in 11th place overall with a total of 54 points. IU’s total is eight points better than it was at this point at last year’s NCAA Championships.

 

400 IM

After placing eighth in the Championship Final of the 200 IM on Thursday, Bailey Andison qualified for the A Final in the 400 IM on Friday morning, posting a time of 4:04.80 to qualify sixth overall.

 

Freshman Mackenzie Looze improved eight spots from her seed, qualifying 13th overall with a time of 4:07.94. Indiana has two swimmers in the top-16 in the 400 IM at the NCAA Championships for the first time since 2004 – Kristen Bradley (10th) and Erin Gorlesky (11th).

 

Josie Grote improved 11 spots from her seed, placing 25th overall with a time of 4:10.42. Freshman Christin Rockway was 26th with a mark of 4:11.08, while Bailey Kovac was 35th in 4:12.91. Rockway and Kovac improved three and five spots from their seeds, respectively.

 

100 Butterfly

For the first time in her career, Christine Jensen qualified for a final in the 100 butterfly at the NCAA Championships. The senior will swim in the Consolation Final of the 100 fly after qualifying 15th overall with a time of 51.97.

 

Shelby Koontz improved six spots from her seed in the event, tying for 20th overall with a time of 52.13.

 

100 Breaststroke

Three-time defending NCAA Champion Lilly King will be the top seed for Friday night’s Championship Final of the 100 breaststroke after posting a pool-record time of 57.55 in the prelims.

 

Freshman Noelle Peplowski placed 21st overall with a time of 59.91, while senior Laura Morley tied for 39th with a mark of 1:00.35. Morley improved three spots from her seed in the event.

 

100 Backstroke

Freshman Morgan Scott placed 20th overall in the 100 backstroke with a time of 52.17.

 

200 Medley Relay

The Hoosier qualified seventh overall for the Championship Final of the 200 medley relay, as he team of Morgan Scott, Lilly King, Christine Jensen and Shelby Koontz touched the wall with a time of 1:36.28.

 

3-Meter Dive

In the 3-meter dive, redshirt senior Jessica Parratto finished 20th with a total score of 304.20. The 2015 NCAA Champion in the platform will look to reclaim her title on Saturday.

 

The 2019 NCAA Championships will continue on Friday evening with the finals of the 400 IM, 100 butterfly, 200 freestyle, 100 breaststroke, 100 backstroke, 200 medley relay and 3-meter dive. The action gets underway at the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center at 6:00 p.m. ET.

Boonville, IN. – Anna Mae Bawel, 87, of Boonville, Indiana went to be with the Lord on March 20, 2019.

She is preceded in death by her loving and devoted husband, Fred; sister, Kathleen; and her parents. Her children rise up and call her blessed (Proverbs 31:28)

Anna Mae was a graduate of Central High School. She continued her education by attending and graduating from Deaconess Hospital School of Nursing in 1952. Her nursing career began by working in the surgery department of Deaconess Hospital.

After her marriage to Fred W. Bawel, Jr., Anna Mae worked as a nurse for Dr. W. Dimmit M.D. and Dr. K.J. Rudolph, M.D. in Boonville. With the birth of her first child, she left nursing to devote her time and energy to her family. Anna returned to nursing in the 70’s as a nurse at Monticello Manor in Boonville. She finished her nursing career working with Dr. K.J. Rudolph and Dr. John Perkins in Evansville, Indiana. Anna Mae was a member of the Eastern Star, Home Ec club, St. John’s United Church of Christ, Women’s Guild, and Tri-Kappa. She had a great love for older adults and in her spare time volunteered at the Good Samaritan Nursing Home. Finally, Anna and husband Fred were one of the original members and dance instructors of the Evansville Friday Night Dance Club.

Anna Mae is survived by her three children: Dr. Karen Bawel-Brinkley of San Jose, CA. and husband Dan; Frederick W. Bawel of Boonville, IN; and Andy Bawel of Indianapolis, IN. and wife Denise; four loving grandchildren: Seth, Erica, Kata & Tara; several nieces and nephews; and one great-grandson: Eli Fritz.
Anna’s family wishes to extend their deepest appreciation to friends and family, Pastor Bob, Dr. William Hardesty and Kay R.N., the staff at Woodmont Health Center for their love, spiritual support, encouragement, and professional care during Anna’s illness.

Friends may call from 11 A.M. to 1 P.M. at Koehler Funeral Home in Boonville, Indiana on Sunday, March 24, 2019.

Funeral service will be held at 1 P.M. on Sunday, March 24, 2019, in Boonville, Indiana at the funeral home with Pastor Robert D. Shofner officiating. Burial will be at Maple Grove Cemetery in Boonville, Indiana.

Obituary Of Fred D. Essary

Schneider Funeral Home of Mt. Vernon, Indiana 

Fred D. Essary, 85, entered heaven on Sunday, March 17, 2019, at Mt. Vernon Nursing and Rehab. He was born May 4, 1933, in Mt. Vernon, into John and Blanche (Cooper) Essary.

Fred attended Mt. Vernon Senior High School. During his life, Fred enjoyed a variety of interesting careers. Among them, he worked at a local funeral home before transitioning to a career in the oil drilling and refining industry. He began as a “roughneck” while drilling oil wells and traveled to various locations before he began working in Mt. Vernon at the Farm Bureau Refinery in 1956 as a pump repairman and where he later retired.

Fred was a member of First Christian Church of Mt. Vernon, where he served as an Elder. He received his 50-year Award of Gold in 2016 from Beulah Lodge #578 Free and Accepted Masons in Mt. Vernon. He also held life memberships for the Fraternal Order of Police-Mt. Vernon Lodge #133, American Legion-Owen Dunn Post #5, the Fraternal Order of Eagles-Aeria #1717 and the Mt. Vernon Conservation Club. He was also a member of Hadi Shrine, the Loyal Order of Moose and the Indiana Sheriff’s Association.

Fred loved and was very proud of his family and their accomplishments.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Sue; sisters, Geneva Ashworth and Beulah Carr; brothers, James, Gene, Guild Elwood and Virgil; granddaughter, Amanda Howe; and great-grandson, Anthony Dilcher.

He is survived by his brother, John; daughters, Cheryl (Steve) Kerzan, Cathy (Dwight) Howe and Shawn (Lawrence Tully) Essary; six grandchildren, Jeremy (Christi) Howe, Cayce (James) Carte, Courtney (Michael) Clayton, Karen (Bryan) Hayden, Joe (Janie) Kerzan and Tony (Auleen) Kerzan; fourteen great-grandchildren, Devon Denny, Aidyn and Brynnon Clayton, Jahvon and Meah Gibbs, James and Joseph Carte, Liv Howe, Savanna Dilcher, Stevi, Harleigh and Baileah Hayden, Ella and Levi Kerzan; many nieces, nephews and loving friends. He will be missed by all.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 1:00 pm, Saturday, March 30, 2019, at First Christian Church, 1403 Country Club Rd., Mt. Vernon, IN, with Pastor Rick Sellers, officiating.

Visitation with the family will be from 11:00 am until 1:00 pm service time on Saturday at the church.

A very special thank you to Dr. Joseph Lee and the staff for the kindness and excellent care given to him.

Clifford Carroll Briggs, 96, of Newburgh and formerly of Mt. Vernon, IN passed away March 19, 2019, at Primrose Memory Care. He was born September 24, 1922, in Browns, IL to the late Otis and Ethel Merle (Fieber) Briggs.
Clifford was a graduate of Albion High School. He had been a medic in the U.S. Army. Clifford was an independent oil producer and was the owner of farming operations. He had been on the Board of Directors for Peoples Bank and Trust for many years. Clifford was a member of the Western Hills Country Club, Elks, and the American Legion. In 2007, he received Inaugural Recognition in the Indiana Oil and Gas Association Hall of Fame. Clifford enjoyed fishing, golfing, gardening and traveling.
He was preceded in death by his sisters, Dorcas Vance and Geneva Shepherd; and brother, Kenneth Briggs.

He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Kathleen (Wood) Briggs; daughter, Nancy (Ken) Johnson; son, David (Phyliss) Briggs; grandchildren, Scott (Julie) Zenthofer, Jeffrey (Jolene) Zenthofer, Ericson (Kara) Briggs and Jenna (Kevin) Schuchard; great-grandchildren, Cole and Kaitlyn Zenthofer, Lincoln and Everly Briggs and Lane Schuchard; several step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren.

Funeral service will be held at 11:00 am on Friday, March 22, 2019, at First United Methodist Church, 601 Main St., Mt. Vernon, IN, with Rev. David Stevens officiating and burial to follow in Bellefontaine Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 9:00 am until 11:00 am service time on Friday at the church.

Gary Lamont VanDyke, 62, of Evansville, IN went home to be with the Lord on March 18, 2019. He was born in Henderson, KY to the late Paul and Josephine VanDyke on February 28, 1957.

Gary graduated from Reitz High School. He was a hardworking handyman who took care of family and friends alike. His contagious smile left an everlasting impression on everyone who met him.

Gary had a passion for all sports and enjoyed going to the casino and playing cards. He was a faithful church member and a community advocate.

Gary leaves to cherish his memory, his companion: Willie Jane Cyverta VanDyke Massey; daughter: Chaurasia of Lexington, KY; stepson: Mark II; sisters: Margaret Leachman Marshall, Charlotte Carter (Barry), Mary VanDyke-Drone (Rod), Carla Rankin (John); brothers: Paul VanDyke, Jr., Vincent VanDyke; grandsons: Tremonte, Tyree, and Mark III; granddaughters: Anajah, and Ma’Ziana; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

  • Terry Wayne Smith, Sr., age 62, passed away March 16, 2019, at his home in Evansville, IN. He was affectionately known by family and friends as “Sugar-Boy.”
  • Terry was born December 30, 1956, in Evansville, Indiana to Grover Goines and Barbara Bond. He attended Lincoln Elementary and Bosse High School. Terry’s firstborn was a daughter he named Meiko. From his relationship with Jennifer, his youngest daughter, Schauntai, and his son, Terry Smith Jr., were born.In his early days, Terry worked at Gillum’s Gas Station on Lincoln Avenue. He also worked in maintenance at the University of Evansville. In 1990, Terry Wayne moved to Colorado for a change in life. Terry’s strong work ethic was demonstrated in his self-employment as a carpenter and auto mechanic. He used his skills to remodel homes and work on cars for friends. In addition, Terry also helped orchestrate several daycares in Colorado. Upon returning to Evansville, he worked in maintenance at the Carver Daycare Center.
  • Terry loved to travel. In the spur of the moment, he would just “get up and go.” But the most important thing Terry cherished was “Family.” Terry was a caring and nurturing Family Man and touched many lives in his own way. He loved his brothers and sisters, grandkids, the daycare kids in Denver CO and his best friend, Pierre Lynch.
  • Terry will live on through his eldest daughter, Meiko (Vaughan) Burnette of Denver CO; youngest daughter, Schauntai (Charlie) Anderson of Indianapolis IN; son, Terry Smith Jr. of Indianapolis IN; two grandchildren from Aurora CO: Cimon Williams and Jaylen Jones; two grandchildren from Indianapolis IN: Charlie Anderson, Jr. and Ja’Schayla (Arias) Williams; one great-grandchild in Indianapolis; sisters: Valeska Griffith of Evansville IN, Arlene Smith (Malcolm) Riley of Evansville IN, Gabriella Smith of Anderson IN, and Pamela Smith (Rodney) Watson of Evansville IN; brothers: Clidy Goines and James Jordan – both of Evansville IN; many nieces and nephews; his companion, Vickie Groves; and a host of other loving family members from Colorado and Indiana.
