EVSC’s New Tech Institute Named 21st Century Learning Exemplar for 2019

0

The Evansville Vanderburgh School Corporation’s newest high school – New Tech Institute – was recently named a 21st Century Exemplar school by the Partnership for 21st Century Learning (P21) for it’s outstanding practices in equipping learners with the necessary skills for success in college, career and life.  NTI was one of only 18 early learning centers, K-12 schools, districts and school programs across the U.S. to receive the distinction.

“Since 2013, P21’s 21st Century Learning Exemplar Program has been identifying and elevating examples of quality 21st century learning. Each year innovative education models are showcased to help other educators do better for every student,” said Karen Garza, President and CEO of Battelle for Kids.

Schools receiving the distinction demonstrated an exceptional implementation of the Framework for 21st Century Learning, a collective vision for learning that helps practitioners integrate skills into the teaching of key academic subjects. The Framework describes the skills, knowledge, and expertise students must master to success in work and life.

“Receiving this honor was not an easy task and we are so thrilled to be among the top 18 schools in the U.S. to receive this distinction,” said NTI Principal Chris Gibson. “It affirms the work we are doing here will benefit our students once they graduate and begin life after high school.”

EVSC Schedules 5K Run & Walk

0

To help promote the health and well being of our students, families, staff and the entire community, the Evansville Vanderburgh School Corporation is once again hosting its very own 5K Run and Walk, scheduled for Saturday, May 4, at 9 a.m. at North High School’s Bundrant Stadium.

The event will include a 5K Run & Walk around North High School, a 1 mile walk, as well as a Kids’ Dash for children 5 and under. The event serves as a fundraiser for EVSC schools. Proceeds are divided among each EVSC school and will be used for physical education equipment. The district with the highest percentage of participants will get a larger portion of the proceeds.

“This is a great way to show our commitment and support for healthy lifestyles of not only our students and staff, but for the entire community,” said EVSC Superintendent David Smith. “We ask the community to join us at this family-fun event and support our schools while doing something for themselves and setting a great example for their families.”

Registration for the event is now open. Cost for participants who register on or before April 7 is $20 for adults and $8 for students. Participants who register after April 7 will pay $25 for adults and $10 for students. Cost includes a t-shirt while supplies last. The Kids’ Dash is open to children 5 years of age and under and is free and includes a free t-shirt.

To register, visit www.evscschools.com/5K. Registration also will be accepted the day of the event.

The EVSC 5K is cosponsored by Tri-State Community Clinics and Townsquare Media.

Wife Arrested in Firefighter’s Death, Neighbor Reacts

0
The homicide investigation of the slain firefighter, Robert Doerr, uncovered a shocking revelation.

Becky Fox Doerr, the wife of Doerr is accused of deleting a phone call she received right before calling 911. She was arrested in the overnight hours for the obstruction of justice. According to court documents, this new information was not brought to the attention of investigators during the interview the night her husband was shot.

Neighbors say they heard the couple arguing from time to time, but they never thought Doerr’s homicide investigation would lead to his wife’s arrest.

“Something to go like this, something had to be wrong,” says Doerr’s neighbor, Jimmy Merida.

They seemed like a normal married couple in the eyes of the neighborhood and local fire department. She was even mentioned multiple times at his funeral.

According to some neighbors, there was one red flag. The couple’s relationship seemed to progress quickly.

“One minute you see them together and the next minute they are loading up to go to Florida to get married. I said Lord, isn’t that something,” says Merida.

Doerr’s friends say the couple was married last September. Members of the fire department made positive remarks about their marriage at the funeral Monday.
