Aces fall to Redbirds in MVC doubleheader

0

UE hopes to take Sunday contestIllinois State picked up wins in both games of Saturday’s doubleheader against the University of Evansville at Cooper Stadium.

Game one saw the Redbirds take an 11-0 win before they finished the day with an 8-1 win in game two.

Illinois State loaded the bases with no outs to start the first game, but UE starter Emily Lockhart got out of the jam giving up just one run.  The Redbirds posted two more in the second before back-to-back solo shots and another run in the third pushed their lead to 6-0.  With one out in the third, Katie McLean drew a walk before Lindsay Renneisen reached on a single through the right side, but ISU was able to get out of the inning unscathed.

Over the next two innings, ISU added five more runs on their way to the 11-0 5-inning win.  Morgan Day threw the complete game for ISU, allowing just one hit to Renneisen.  She struck out seven.  Lockhart took the loss for UE while Ashleigh Downing and Hannah Shirley also saw time in the circle.

After starting out strong in game one, the Redbirds led the second contest off with back-to-back hits.  Freshman pitcher Izzy Vetter avoided damage as she recorded two quick strikeouts and a fly out to keep ISU off the board.  Evansville was able to score first in the bottom of the inning.  Eryn Gould laced a 1-out double to center to score Katie McLean, who led the game off with a walk.

In the top of the second, ISU got on the board with four unearned runs to take their first lead of the second game.  The Redbirds threatened again in the top of the third, but right fielder Mea Adams made two excellent defensive plays, including a throw to third to get an ISU runner out to keep the deficit for UE at three runs.

Evansville threatened in the third, loading up the bases with two outs, including hits by Mea Adams and Renneisen.  An infield pop-up by the Aces kept the game at 4-1.  Illinois State added three more runs in the sixth frame when Emme Olson hit a bases-clearing triple to push the lead to 7-1.  A solo shot in the seventh put the finishing touches on an 8-1 win.  Vetter threw six innings and gave up seven runs, three of which were earned.  Jaime Nurrenbern threw the 7th.

UE looks to pick up a win on Sunday when the teams meet for the final game of the series at 11 a.m. inside Cooper Stadium.

Eagles sweep McKendree to open GLVC play

0

Junior pitcher Jennifer Leonhardt (Louisville, Kentucky) tossed her third straight complete-game shutout and freshman catcher Courtney Schoolcraft (Crest Hill, Illinois) hit her first-career home run as University of Southern Indiana Softball opened Great Lakes Valley Conference play with a doubleheader sweep of visiting McKendree University in its home-opener at the USI Softball Field.

The Screaming Eagles (14-10, 2-0 GLVC) rolled to a 5-0 win in the opener before rallying from a 6-2 deficit to earn an 8-6 win in the nightcap.

USI returns to action Sunday at noon when it hosts the University of Illinois Springfield in a GLVC doubleheader at the USI Softball Field. Sunday’s games are a rematch of last year’s NCAA II Midwest Super Regional, which USI swept en route to its first-ever national championship. The Prairie Stars (13-11, 2-0 GLVC) swept Bellarmine University in a GLVC doubleheader Saturday in Louisville, Kentucky.

Game 1: USI 5, McKendree (13-13, 0-2 GLVC) 0
Leonhardt struck out 10 batters, marking her third straight start with double-digit strikeouts, as the Eagles cruised to the win in the opener. She also went 2-for-2 at the plate with a sacrifice and two RBIs.

USI began the scoring in the bottom of the second inning as a two-out rally led to an infield single by Leonhardt, who pushed across the first tally of the game. Leonhardt had an RBI-single in the Eagles’ three-run fourth inning to put USI up, 2-0, at the time; while a two-run double by senior catcher Lindsey Barr (Whitesville, Kentucky) staked the Eagles to a 4-0 cushion.

The Eagles concluded the scoring on an RBI-groundout by sophomore outfielder Alicia Webb (Elberfeld, Indiana) in the fifth inning.

Leonhardt (9-3), meanwhile, scattered five hits throughout seven innings and, for the fourth straight game, did not issue a walk.

Game 2: USI 8, McKendree 6
USI took advantage of a lead-off walk to score a pair of runs in the top of the first inning. Leonhardt had an RBI-double to put USI in front, 1-0; then she scored on an errant throw by the catcher later in the frame to put the Eagles in front, 2-0.

McKendree, however, answered in the top of the fourth inning as the Bearcats sent nine batters to the plate in a six-run frame. The Bearcats had five hits in the inning, including a three-run shot by sophomore outfielder Shelby Summer.

USI trailed 6-2 in the fifth when back-to-back RBI-singles by Schoolcraft and junior outfielder Allison Schubert (Nicholasville, Kentucky) cut the Bearcats’ lead in half.

Leonhardt recorded her fourth RBI of the day on a sacrifice fly in the sixth to bring the Eagles to within a single tally, while Schoolcraft followed with a three-run shot over the leftfield fence to put the Eagles in front, 8-6. It was the first career collegiate home run for Schoolcraft, who replaced an injured Barr behind the plate in the fourth inning.

In the circle, senior pitcher Haylee Smith (Florence, Kentucky) tossed three scoreless innings in a relief appearance to earn her first win of the year. Smith retired all nine batters she faced en route to the victory.

Vectren Urges Customers To Evaluate Billing And Payment Options

Vectren Urges Customers To Evaluate Billing And Payment OptionsWinter Rules (Expire March 15, 2019)

Evansville, Ind.  – As the end of the winter heating season approaches, Vectren Energy Delivery of Indiana (Vectren), a CenterPoint Energy company, wants to remind customers that the regulatory moratorium, which prevents energy companies from disconnecting customers who meet low-income guidelines and have received federal and state utility heating assistance, will expire on Friday, March 15.

Customers who have received a disconnect notice or need bill payment assistance are urged to contact Vectren online at Vectren.com or call 1-800-227-1376 to make payment arrangements and avoid potential disconnection.

“Due to the bitter cold temperatures we experienced at the beginning of this year, some customers may find themselves behind on their bill payments,” said Lynnae Wilson, chief business officer, Indiana electric. “As part of our commitment to our customers, we have programs and payment options to help them manage costs.”

Customers can choose from the following free Vectren billing and payment options, as well as energy-efficiency programs:

Payment Arrangement: Customers who are having difficulty paying bills in full can request a payment arrangement to fulfill the obligation in smaller increments over a set period of time. Eligible customers can request a payment arrangement by calling 1-800-227-1376.

  • Energy Assistance Program (EAP):  State and federal utility assistance dollars are still available for income-eligible customers. Customers who fall below 150 percent of federal poverty guidelines ($37,650 for a family of four), should visit their local service provider to sign up for EAP. Visit ihcda.in.gov to locate the local service provider.
  • Universal Service Program: Natural gas customers who qualify for EAP will be automatically enrolled in the Universal Service Program (USP). The USP provides a discount on natural gas bills for eligible low-income customers from December through May. Discounts are not applied retroactively.
  • Energy-efficiency Resources: Vectren has a wide offering of energy-efficiency programs for customers, which can be found at www.vectren.com/saveenergy. Customers are also encouraged to apply for all residential (home ownership or rental) weatherization programs, including programs available through the local service provider.
