Eagles Complete Three-Game Sweep Of Lewis

0

University of Southern Indiana Baseball wrapped up its three-game sweep of Lewis University with an 11-10 win on Sunday, pushing the Screaming Eagles to 11-7 (4-2 GLVC) on the season.

Sophomore centerfielder Bryce Krizan (Mt. Vernon, Indiana) posted a three-for-four outing with two doubles and a triple, two RBI and two runs scored.

Freshman catcher Lucas McNew (Floyds Knobs, Indiana) struck again with his fifth big fly of the season in the fifth inning, along with a single in the fourth.

USI opened the game in the second inning with four runs on the Flyers, powered by a single from senior second baseman Jacob Fleming (Evansville, Indiana) and doubles from Krizan and freshman right fielder Bryson McNay(Sellersburg, Indiana).

Lewis began to work back into the game with two runs in the third inning and four in the fifth. Anthony Rios of the Flyers hit a three-run home run to knot the game up and chase senior southpaw starter Chase Partain (Evansville, Indiana) from the mound. Lewis went on to take the lead on a wild pitch from sophomore Reece Kleinhelter (Jasper, Indiana) immediately after.

The Eagles came roaring back with four runs in the fifth, opened by an RBI double from Krizan and capped by the McNew two-run homer. Junior third baseman Kobe Stephens (Dale, Indiana) scored Krizan on a sacrifice fly in the seventh to essentially seal the game.

While the bats regained control of the game, junior right-hander Peter Wissel (New Castle, Indiana) entered the game for two solid innings with three strikeouts, enough to capture his first win of the season.

Senior lefty Paul Perez (Puerto la Cruz, Venezuela) was called upon again entering the ninth with an 11-7 USI lead. The Flyers tagged Perez for three runs, including a two-run homer from Matt McCauley, to bring out senior reliever Dalton Lewis (Parker, Colorado) to pick up his first save of the season.

USI Baseball stays home for a Wednesday (March 20) twinbill with Bellarmine University. The Eagles and Knights are scheduled for a 3 p.m. start.

USI Softball Sweeps Stars

EVANSVILLE, Ind.—University of Southern Indiana Softball racked up a combined 19 hits as it earned a Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader sweep of visiting University of Illinois Springfield Sunday at the USI Softball Field.

The Screaming Eagles (16-10, 4-0 GLVC) won the opener, 7-0, before rallying for a 5-2 win in the nightcap. Sunday’s games were a rematch of last year’s NCAA II Midwest Super Regional, which USI swept en route to its first-ever national championship, and pitted last year’s GLVC Tournament champion in USI against last year’s GLVC regular-season champion in Illinois Springfield.

USI returns to action Saturday at noon when it travels to St. Louis, Missouri, to take on Maryville University in a GLVC doubleheader.

Game 1: USI 7, Illinois Springfield 0
Sophomore outfielder Alicia Webb (Elberfeld, Indiana) hit rrun-scoringtriples in the bottom of the first and second innings and senior pitcher Jennifer Leonhardt(Louisville, Kentucky) took another no-hitter into the sixth inning as USI cruised to the 7-0 win in the opener.

Webb’s RBI-triple in the first inning put the Eagles up 1-0, while an RBI-groundout by Leonhardt gave USI a 2-0 lead heading into the second inning.

The Eagles erupted for five runs in the second frame as senior second baseman Claire Johnson (Pittsboro, Indiana) hit a two-run double to start the scoring. Webb followed two batters later with a two-run triple to put USI up 6-0, while a Leonhardt RBI-single in the next at-bat gave USI all the scoring it would need.

Leonhardt (10-3) earned the win after allowing just two hits and four base runners. She fanned six batters in six innings of work, while freshman pitcher Katie Back(Indianapolis, Indiana) completed the combined shutout with a scoreless seventh inning.

Game 2: USI 5, Illinois Springfield 2
USI scored five unanswered runs to rally from a 2-0 deficit en route to the victory in the nightcap.

After spotting the Prairie Stars (13-13, 2-2 GLVC) tallies in the first and second innings, USI capitalized on an error to score four times in the last half of the fourth inning. Sophomore first baseman Haley Shouse (Borden, Indiana) had a two-run single to tie the score, while a two-run double by Johnson gave the Eagles the 4-2 lead.

Senior outfielder/pitcher Caitlyn Bradley (Forest, Indiana) hit an RBI-double in the fifth inning to extend the Eagles’ lead to three runs.

Bradley (4-3) got off to a shaky start in the circle, giving up two runs, one earned, off three hits throughout the first two frames; but settled down to hold the Stars to just three hits and four baserunners throughout the remainder of the game to earn the win. She finished the contest with three strikeouts and just two walks in seven innings of work.

Softball falls to Redbirds in series finale

0

UE set for another week of home play

In a game that saw both offenses clicking on all cylinders, Illinois State took a 16-8 victory over the University of Evansville softball team inside Cooper Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

With the win, the Redbirds (9-20, 3-0 MVC) swept the 3-game series over the Purple Aces (10-14, 0-3 MVC).  Leading the Aces was Lindsay Renneisen, who notched a pair of 2-RBI hits on her way to four runs batted in.  Allison Daggett had two RBI while Mea Adams had one.

It was another quick start for the Redbirds, who hit a pair of 2-run shots in the top of the first to take a 4-0 lead.  Evansville had a quick answer, matching the four runs in the bottom of the inning.  Katie McLean and Eryn Gould reached base for Lindsay Renneisen, who doubled to center field to score the pair.  Bailee Bostic added a 2-run hit of her own, notching an infield single that score two more runs to tie the game.

ISU threatened in the second, drawing two walks, but senior Emily Lockhart came into the game in relief and got two quick strikeouts to keep the game tied.  Evansville capitalized in the bottom of the frame when Renneisen struck again.  After ISU intentionally walked Gould, Renneisen made them pay, lacing a 2-run double to right-center to give UE its first lead.  The Redbirds fought back with a pair in the third that tied it right back up at 6-6.

Mea Adams gave UE the lead right back in the third.  After fouling off numerous pitches, she found one she liked and turned it into an RBI double to left that gave Evansville a 7-6 edge.  The back-and-forth action continued when ISU retook the lead at 9-7 thanks to three runs in the top of the fourth.

In the fifth, the Redbirds added some insurance thanks to a grand slam by Allison Spence before finishing the day with the 16-8 win in six innings.

UE remains at Cooper Stadium this week, facing UT Martin on Wednesday in a 3 p.m. doubleheader before welcoming Loyola to town for a 3-game set next weekend.

Aces Baseball Can’t Work Brooms on Creighton

0
After crushing Creighton in the first two games of their series by a combined 18-1, the University of Evansville baseball team had the brooms out for Creighton. However, the Bluejays had other ideas, avoiding the sweep, as the Aces fell 10-4 at Charles H. Braun Stadium Sunday afternoon.
Senior left-hand pitcher Alex Weigand (1-2) got the start for UE and tossed a pair of shutout innings to open the game. However, the Bluejays got to Weigand in the 3rd, putting three runs on the scoreboard. Creighton would tack on two more tallies in the fourth frame, ending Weigand’s day. For the game, the senior hurler went 3 2/3 innings, giving up five runs on six hits, three earned, while striking out five and walking one. Junior right-hand reliever Jake McMahill would come in in relief, giving up one run in 2/3 of an inning of work.

Evansville would finally breakthrough in the fifth inning, as senior left fielder Matt Jones knocked in junior catcher Ben Komonosky with an RBI single to left, cutting the Creighton’s lead to 6-1. However, the Bluejays struck for four more runs in the sixth and the Aces were in a 10-1 hole.

UE would attempt a rally in the bottom of the frame, beginning with an RBI single by senior third baseman Sam Troyer, bringing in junior right fielder Troy Beilsmith. Freshman second baseman DannyBorgstrom would  keep the Aces rolling with an RBI single down the right field line, scoring sophomore first baseman Tanner Craig. Sophomore pinch hitter Pete Vaccaro would cap the sixth inning uprising with a run-scoring lace to left, tallying Troyer, cutting the Creighton lead to 10-4. However, that’s all the scoring either team would manage, with the Bluejays getting the sweep-avoiding victory.

The loss halts the UE winning streak at four, dropping them to 9-7 on the season. Creighton improves to 8-5.

The Aces are back at home Wednesday night for a non-conference matchup with Eastern Illinois. First pitch from Braun Stadium is set for 6 pm.

Krizan, McNew power doubleheader sweep of Lewis

0

University of Southern Indiana Baseball swept Lewis University in the Screaming Eagles’ home Great Lakes Valley Conference opener on Saturday with scores of 12-7 and 6-3.

Freshman catcher Lucas McNew (Floyds Knobs, Indiana) went 4-for-7 from the plate with RBI, three runs scored and a home run on the afternoon.

Senior right-hander Austin Krizan (Mt. Vernon, Indiana) posted an eight-inning gem with eight strikeouts in the nightcap.

Game 1: USI 12, Lewis 7

The Flyers opened the afternoon with a five-run first frame and a solo home run by Connor Rutherford in the second to tag USI senior starter Austin Gossmann (Avon, Indiana). Despite the rough start, Gossmann went on to shut Lewis down in innings three through six to end the day with 11 strikeouts in 6.1 innings-pitched, allowing five earned runs on nine hits.

The Eagles immediately began the comeback effort in the bottom of the second, scoring one run in each of the second, third and fourth innings, and two in the fifth. Senior first baseman Nathan Kuester (Rockport, Indiana) scored twice over the four-inning stretch. Junior rightfielder Manny Lopez (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic) punctuated the run with a two-RBI single.

The bottom of the seventh frame saw the Eagles take complete control. After senior right-hander Dalton Lewis (Parker, Colorado) came in to only one run in a bases-loaded jam, McNew sent his fourth home run of the season over the left field wall to knot the game up.

USI would plate three more runs in the inning to hand Dalton Lewis his first victory of the season. Junior right-hander Jacob Bowles (Mt. Washington, Kentucky) relieved Lewis in a 10-7 game in the eighth to pick up a six-out save for his first of the season.

Game 2: USI 6, Lewis 3

Austin Krizan allowed just three runs on six hits through eight innings to keep the Lewis offense down in the second game of the day. The second-game starter never allowed more than one run in any inning to push his season record to 2-0.

McNew kept the train rolling from game one for the USI bats, sending a liner to right center to plate Hunter for an RBI triple in the first frame. In the third, McNew returned to score sophomore centerfielder Bryce Krizan (Mt. Vernon, Indiana) with a sacrifice fly.

Bryce Krizan reappeared at the plate in fourth with the bases loaded to walk home junior leftfielder Aaron Euler(Evansville, Indiana). Senior second baseman Jacob Fleming (Evansville, Indiana) added a run for USI in the fifth, scoring Lopez on a two-out single to left. Krizan returned in the sixth to score on a throwing error after stealing third in the sixth.

After Austin Krizan put up a magnificent eight-inning gem, the Eagles called upon senior southpaw Paul Perez (Puerto la Cruz, Venezuela) to shut the door on the Flyers. Perez sent the Lewis bats down in order, including two strikeouts, to end the evening for his third save of the season.
