King’s Eighth Title Highlights Indiana’s Ninth-Place Finish at NCAA Championships

AUSTIN, Texas – The No. 17-ranked Indiana University women’s swimming and diving team concluded competition at the 2018 NCAA Championships on Saturday evening at the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center in Austin, Texas.

For the first time in program history, the Hoosiers posted a fifth-straight top-10 finish at the NCAA Championships, placing Indiana ninth overall with a total of 179 points. The top-10 finish is the 10th in school history, while the 179 points are the third-most in IU history.

At the NCAA Championships, the Hoosiers had 10 individuals earn a total of 19 All-America honors. Also this week, Indiana became the first women’s swimming and diving program in Big Ten history to win at least one NCAA title in six-straight years – Lilly King from 2016-19, Jessica Parratto in 2015 and Brooklyn Snodgrass in 2014.

In the final event of her illustrious collegiate career, Lilly King won her fourth-straight NCAA Championship in the 200 breaststrokes, posting a pool record time of 2:02.90. King’s time is the second-fastest in history, bested only by her record mark of 2:02.60.

With her two NCAA titles this week, King becomes the first woman in NCAA history to win eight breaststroke crowns. The Evansville, Ind. native’s eight individual championships are the most of any swimmer or diver in Big Ten history.

The senior is only the second woman in NCAA history to sweep two distances of one stroke, joining Kara Lynn Joyce who won the 50 and 100 freestyles from 2004-08. In total, King is just the sixth man or woman in NCAA history to sweep two distances of one stroke. The only other swimmer to sweep the breaststroke events at the NCAA’s was Brendan Hansen from 2001-04.

King leaves Bloomington as one of the greatest athletes in the history of Indiana University, as well as one of the most accomplished swimmers in NCAA history. King was a 16-time All-America honoree, 16-time Big Ten Champion, three-time Big Ten Swimmer of the Year, two-time Big Ten Female Athlete of the Year, two-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree and the 2016 CSCAA National Swimmer of the Year.

Also for the Hoosiers in the Championship Final of the 200 breaststrokes, Noelle Peplowski posted a personal-best time of 2:06.94 to finish sixth overall. The freshman earned her first All-America honor with her effort.

In the Consolation Final, senior Laura Morley scored for the first time in her collegiate career, placing sixth to finish 14th overall with a time of 2:09.00. The Honorable-Mention All-America accolade is the first of her career.

In her last collegiate event for the Hoosiers, redshirt senior Jessica Parratto won bronze in the Championship Final of the platform dive, placing third with a total score of 332.90.

Parratto scored over 67.20 points on four of her five dives, including three scores over 70 points. The redshirt senior scored a 76.80 in the third round and then followed it with a 75.20 in the fourth.

The 2015 NCAA Champion in the platform dive, Parratto was an 11-time All-American in her storied Hoosier career. A five-time Big Ten Champion and four-time First-Team All-Big Ten honoree, Parratto leaves Bloomington as one of the best divers in the history of IU and the Big Ten.

For the third-straight year, Cassy Jernberg scored points for the Hoosiers in the 1,650 freestyle. The junior finished 12th overall with a time of 16:08.70. The All-America honor is the third of her career.

A pair of freshmen had impressive NCAA debuts in the event, as Christin Rockway improved 20 spots from her seed to finish 20th with a personal-best time of 16:08.70.  Maggie Wallace improved six spots with her time of 16:11.13 to place 24th overall.

Evansville Museum’s ‘Quake Cottage’ Replicates Seismic Activity

This weekend in Evansville there’s a chance to experience an earthquake. The Evansville Museum is hosting ‘Quake Cottage” it’s an earthquake simulator.

The tiny home is mounted on a trailer that mimics an earthquakes movement and allows people to experience the natural disaster. The event also serves as a learning tool for the Evansville Museum.

They’re hoping that by showing people what happens during an earthquake they will be more prepared if a big one strikes. The Hoosier state has a history of earthquakes and the cottage can simulate 2.0 to 7.0 magnitude earthquakes.

If you’d like to check out the quake cottage it’s at the Evansville Museum through Saturday.

The exhibit will be open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Otters sign Williams, Omaña; extend Cronin

0
The Evansville Otters have signed first baseman Josh Williams and right-handed pitcher Henry Omaña and extended infielder David Cronin.
Williams, a Toronto, Ontario, Canada native, joins the Otters after spending some time in 2018 with the White Sands Pupfish in the Pecos League. With White Sands, Williams batted .333 with six home runs, 30 RBIs, 33 runs, and 13 doubles.
“Williams comes highly recommended from a trusted scout,” said Otters manager Andy McCauley. “He is a power left-handed bat that will be battling for a job at first base and in the designated hitter role.”
“I’m thankful and looking forward to the opportunity to play for this first-class organization,” said Williams.
Williams finished his collegiate career at Arkansas-Pine Bluff, where he hit .244 with 19 RBIs in limited at-bats in 2017.
“I’ve always loved to compete, and I take pride in that,” said Williams. “I’ll be giving it my best and will be pushing to bring another league championship to Evansville.”
Omaña is from Walnut, Calif. and joins the Otters after a couple years playing Mexico. Omaña spent 2018 with Pericos de Puebla and their respective Spring and Autumn teams. Overall, Omaña was 0-1 in 10 appearances and 14.2 innings pitched between the two seasons. In 2017, played for Acereros de Monclova. Omaña had a 4.82 ERA and 10 strikeouts in five appearances.
“Omaña played with Hunter Cullen at Cal State Fullerton and was brought to our attention by Hunter,” said McCauley.
“I am very excited to be getting an opportunity to play with the Otters and to be able to work with Coach (Max) Peterson on sharpening up my game,” said Omaña.
Omaña began his collegiate career at Cal State Fullerton but finished at Cal Poly Pomona. In 2017 with Cal Poly Pomona, Omaña posted a 2.48 ERA in 94.1 innings pitched with 92 strikeouts and a 6-5 record.
“We spoke with the Mexican League team he pitched for and they spoke very highly of him,” said McCauley. “He should figure highly in the mix in our bullpen.”
“I approach each batter as if each and every pitch is important, but I focus on pitching to the catcher’s glove rather than against the individual batter,” said Omaña. “My belief is that if I execute my pitches, the batter will get himself out.”
The Otters also re-signed infielder David Cronin to a contract extension for the 2019 season.

Unauthenticated cell records lead to reversal of robbery-related conviction

0

Olivia Covington for www.ttheindianalawyer.com

onvicted of aiding a robbery after the Indiana Court of Appeals reversed her conviction, finding the state failed to properly authenticate cellphone records it said tied the woman to the crime.

In Jaqueline B. Walters v. State of Indiana, 18A-CR-1021, Jaqueline Walters was charged with Level 3 felony aiding, inducing or causing an armed robbery after the phone number she shared with her boyfriend, known as 6065 Phone, was tied to a 2015 robbery of the Morgantown IGA where Walters worked. Records from Verizon listed messages between 6065 Phone and John Nocito, a friend of Walters’ boyfriend, discussing a plan to rob the IGA. Walters was present during the robbery.

After Walters’ initial trial resulted in a hung jury, the state scheduled a retrial and requested an evidentiary hearing to have the text messages “deemed statements of coconspirators so the statements would not be hearsay.” The state wanted the Morgan Superior Court to take judicial notice of the cellphone records, which had been presented during the trial against Nocito and Walters’ boyfriend.

The trial court agreed to take judicial notice over Walters’ objection, and the state supported its conspiracy theory by presenting messages saying Nocito intended to work with “Jackie” to carry out the robbery and that Walters could provide information about the best time of day to rob the store. The state also presented an affidavit of certification from Verizon that was dated Feb. 27, 2017.

Walters objected to the admission of the phone records, arguing they were not self-authenticating and noting the certification did not list what phone number it applied to or what warrant it was responding to. But the trial court determined there was a certification from a business records custodian and, thus, admitted the cell records.

A jury then found Walters guilty, but the Indiana Court of Appeals overturned her conviction Friday. Judge Melissa May, writing for a unanimous appellate panel, noted the certification was issued roughly 18 months after the records were obtained and did not list the applicable phone number or dates of the records.

Without that information, the appellate panel said the certificate of authenticity “lacks indicia of reliability.”

“We cannot say the State provided proper authentication of these records to breach the threshold question of admissibility,” May wrote, citing to Speybroeck v. State, 875 N.E.2d 813 (Ind. Ct. App. 2007), reh’g denied. “Without authentication, we do not reach the question of whether the statements made therein were admissible as coconspirator statements. The trial court abused its discretion when it admitted the evidence of the phone records for 6065 Phone without proper authentication.”

Further, without the phone records, the appellate panel determined there was not enough evidence to sustain the state’s case against Walters. Thus, her conviction was reversed, but with leeway for the trial court to retry her.

“While ‘double jeopardy forbids a retrial … if the reviewing court concludes that the evidence is legally insufficient to support the conviction[,]’ if the State were able to authenticate the phone records for 6065 Phone, the jury could have found Walters had conspired with Nocito,” May wrote. “Therefore, the Double Jeopardy Clause does not preclude a retrial.”
