Butler Comes To Town For Tuesday Softball Game

0

Aces and Bulldogs Meet At 5 P.M.

On Tuesday, the University of Evansville softball team is set to play host to Butler University in a 5 p.m. game at Cooper Stadium.

The Aces are coming off of a series victory over Loyola.  After dropping the first game of Saturday’s doubleheader by a final of 9-6, UE rallied to take the final two games of the series.  Izzy Vetter retired the first nine batters of the second game in helping Evansville to the 5-3 win.  On Sunday, Vetter tossed a 1-hitter while Haley Woolf added four RBI to give UE a 9-1 win.

Woolf had a stellar weekend series against Loyola in leading the Aces to a pair of wins.  Woolf went 4-10 in the series with her first career home run, three doubles and eight runs batted in.  Woolf capped off the weekend with a career-high four RBI in the series-clinching victory on Sunday.  The freshman entered the weekend with just one RBI.

Vetter threw two of her best college games to help the Aces earn a series win over Loyola.  In the second game of Saturday’s doubleheader, Vetter retired the first nine Rambler batters before finishing with the 5-3 win.  Her top game as a member of the Aces came on Sunday when she threw a complete game 1-hitter.  Vetter struck out five batters in earning her second win in as many starts.

Sophomore Allison Daggett batted .714 for the week, recording five hits in seven at-bats.  She posted a double and two RBI in four games.  Daggett was a perfect 2-2 in Saturday’s 5-3 triumph over the Ramblers and followed that up with two more hits in Sunday’s 9-1 win.

Butler enters Tuesday’s game with a 10-19 mark and dropped two of their first three Big East games.  Jenna Foreman is the top hitter for the Bulldogs, checking in at .340.  Foreman leads the squad with 18 runs.  Five Butler players have double-figure RBI’s, led by 13 from Sammy Andersen and Karli Ricketts.

Pipeline Replacement Work Underway Throughout Indiana

0

Nearly $51 Million In upgrades To Retire 80 Miles In 2019

Crews working for Vectren Energy Delivery (Vectren), a CenterPoint Energy Company, have begun the process of replacing gas mains and service lines throughout the state as part of the company’s pipeline replacement program, which is a multi-year program to replace about 1,200 miles of bare steel and cast iron pipeline infrastructure in nearly 75 cities or towns in Indiana. This year, 26 cities will be impacted, and crews will retire 80 miles through a nearly $51 million investment.

“To ensure the continued reliability of our natural gas pipeline systems and service, Vectren continues our program to replace essentially all of our bare steel and cast-iron pipeline infrastructure in Indiana,” said Richard Leger, vice president of Natural Gas Distribution, Indiana and Ohio. “These infrastructure enhancements are vital to meeting federal requirements and ensuring safe delivery of natural gas service to our customers for decades to come.”

The following cities will be impacted in 2019: Anderson, Bedford, Bloomington, Chesterfield, Columbus, Crawfordsville, Dublin, Elwood, Evansville, Frankfort, Greenfield, Hagerstown, Huntington, Knightstown, Lafayette, Marion, Martinsville, Muncie, Parker City, Petersburg, Richmond, Rushville, Terre Haute, Tipton, Vincennes and Washington.

Visit the Active Projects tab on www.vectren.com/pipelinereplacement to view an interactive map displaying all existing or upcoming work in each city. This map is updated regularly as new projects come online. Replacement work is prioritized based on pipeline assessment and leak repair data as well as the opportunity to minimize the construction impact to the affected city.

These additional cities, which have not previously had replacement work, will be impacted in the coming years: Albany, Arcadia, Cowan, Daleville, Dunkirk, Farmland, Frankton, Gas City, Gaston, Milton, Markle, Markleville, Mt. Summit, New Columbus, Noblesville, Oakland City and Shideler.

In most cases, a polyethylene (plastic) system is being installed to replace the current bare steel and cast-iron gas pipeline system. First, the gas main, which is a gas pipeline that ranges in size from 2” to 8” and is often underneath the street or sidewalk, will be replaced within the right-of-way, and then the service lines running directly to homes and businesses will be replaced. Upon completion of the project, affected yards, sidewalks and streets will be restored.

“Construction for these pipeline projects may take several weeks to complete, and times may vary based on the size of the project, weather, ground surface/soil and other situations that may arise,” said Leger. “Please be assured that Vectren and its contractors will make every effort to complete each project as quickly as possible and minimize impact to customers and the community.”

Prior to service replacement, a Vectren representative will contact customers to provide an overview of the required work. Vectren reminds residents to please keep the following in mind:

Please exercise caution when driving through the construction zones.

We urge residents and their children to keep a safe distance away from any work zones.

Since 2008, more than 700 of the 1,200 total miles have been replaced in Indiana, which has led to a reduction in leak calls and natural gas emissions from the distribution system. The reduction in natural gas emissions aligns with Vectren’s pledge to replace cast iron and unprotected steel natural gas mains at a rate of 5 percent, or roughly 42 miles, per year as part of the Environmental Protection Agency’s Natural Gas STAR Methane Challenge Program.

Bryce’s life will help save others

0

A Hoosier family’s struggle could lead to other lives being saved. Bryce Clausen is a one year old diagnosed with a rare genetic disease, and while it is too late to help him, his parents are working with the General Assembly on a new law benefiting others. Because early detection is key to fighting Krabbe disease, legislation I am sponsoring would add it to the list of tests on the state’s newborn screening panel.

Krabbe is a rare genetic disease that destroys nerve cells in the brain and throughout the nervous system, affecting 1 in 100,000 people in the United States. The life expectancy for children with Krabbe is 2 years of age, but infants who are diagnosed immediately and treated early have better chances of living longer, healthier lives. While there is no cure for Krabbe, testing for it as early as possible and starting necessary treatments immediately is the most effective method to save these children.

In addition to Krabbe disease, the bill also calls for Pompe disease and Hurler syndrome to be added to Indiana’s newborn screening panel. Currently, three of Indiana’s neighboring states and 10 others already require these three diseases to be tested for at birth. Hoosier newborns are currently tested for many diseases including sickle cell anemia, cystic fibrosis, hearing loss and critical congenital heart disease.

After unanimous support in the General Assembly, this legislation focused on saving lives can now be considered by the governor for a new law. Although it is under unfortunate circumstances, I am grateful to Bryce and his family for using their struggle to save others. In addition to pushing for this legislation, the Clausen’s are raising money to sponsor a theme room in Bryce’s name at the Peyton Manning Children’s Hospital. To learn more about Bryce’s battle, visit give.stvincent.org/clausen-family-project.

As always, I encourage you to share your thoughts and feedback on legislation as it moves through the process. Contact me with any input or questions at h75@iga.in.gov or 317-232-9643.

Civil Rights Activist Isra Chaker to Speak at the University of Evansville

0

Isra Chaker, civil right activist, campaigning expert, and public speaker, will be at the University of Evansville on Thursday, April 4, to present “College Students Rise Up: Advocation in the Trump Era, Dismantling the Misconceptions of Refugees, the Muslim Ban, and Breaking down Stereotypes on National Television.” The event, which is free and open to the public, is from 7:00-8:00 p.m. in Eykamp Hall in Ridgway University Center.

Chaker serves as the refugee campaign lead at Oxfam, one of the leading international NGOs in the world. In this position, she uses her campaign expertise to manage Oxfam’s campaign, that advocates for vulnerable people such as refugees, asylees, and temporary protected status (TPS) holders. The campaign also opposes discriminatory policies such as the Muslim bans.

Being personally impacted by the Muslim ban, and not being able to reunite with her extended family in Syria, Chaker is passionate in her work in reuniting families and advocating for vulnerable people. Recently, she was a featured speaker at the national #FamiliesBelongTogether March in Washington, DC, an event which drew over 40,000 people.

One of Chaker’s infamous projects that went viral in 2017 was bringing refugees to President Trump’s childhood home in Queens, New York, to share their experiences and their “American Dream.”

Chaker has been interviewed and featured on Democracy Now with Amy Goodman, NowThis, AJ+, ABC News, Al Jazeera, CNN, the Associated Press, VICE News, the Washington Post, and more.

Chaker was appointed Global Ambassador for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency USA (UNRWA) for her invaluable contributions in raising awareness and funds for their projects supporting refugee assistance.

In addition, Chaker was recently chosen as an ICON for the “We The Future” campaign by Amplifier, which recognizes 10 young activists from across the country in their leading work on current social justice issues affecting humanity. Chakra was chosen to represent the refugee and immigration justice theme, known as “We the Future, will not be Banned.” She is the only Muslim in the campaign, and her art work, as well as a curriculum she designed to break down the stereotypes and misconceptions of Muslims, refugees and immigrants, will be taught in over 20,000 schools across the United States this academic year.
