They went into foster care with a rabbit-experienced staff member and so Mary Beth and her siblings are very well socialized and working on litterbox training. Mary-Beth herself also looks like a Californian mix as well. Her adoption fee is $50 and will include her spay & registered microchip. Contact Vanderburgh Humane at (812) 426-2563 for adoption details!

Special Patrols Statewide April 14 – 20, 2019

Indiana – We’ve all heard about it before; the Move Over Law.  In 1999 Indiana was the first State in the nation to pass such a law requiring motorists to move to an adjacent traffic lane, or reduce speed by 10 mph below the posted speed limit if unable to change lanes safely when driving by a stationary police, fire or ambulance emergency vehicle stopped along the side of the road.  Over the years Indiana’s law has expanded to include stationary recovery, utility service, solid waste haulers, road, street highway maintenance vehicles, as well as a stationary survey or construction vehicles when displaying alternately flashing amber lights.

Indiana’s law was originally crafted and passed the result of the death of ISP Tpr. Andrew Winzenread who was killed in April of 1997 while assisting a stranded motorist on I-74 in Dearborn County.  Now, in 2019, every state, with the exception of Hawaii has some form of a move-over-law.

But we all know laws are only effective when followed.  In Indiana we still have too many emergency vehicles being struck by inattentive or distracted motorists.  And in neighboring Illinois, three state troopers have been struck and killed since the beginning of 2019.

As part of a joint ‘Move Over Law’ traffic enforcement project Indiana will be working with our ‘Six State Trooper’ law enforcement partners in Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania and West Virginia during the week of April 14th through the 20th.  During this time motorists can expect to see additional patrols looking for distracted driving violations which often lead to motorists failing to move over when they approach an emergency vehicle stopped roadside or at a crash scene.  Some violations associated with Driving While Distracted include speeding, following too close, drifting from lane to lane and failing to signal turns or lane changes.

It is not the goal of the Indiana State Police to simply write tickets.  We encourage and desire voluntary compliance with traffic laws to ensure the safety of the public as well as the safety of public safety professionals.  Our historical enforcement of the move over law reveals about 50% of persons stopped for this violation receive a written warning, but citations are issued for particularly egregious violations of the law.

Southwest Indiana AHEC leads Indiana SANE Training Project to boost number of sexual assault nurse examiners

0

April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), one in five women in Indiana will be victims of sexual violence. Research has shown that medical facilities with Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) programs provide better victim care and forensic evidence collection, but not all nurses have had access to this training.

Southwest Indiana Area Health Education Center (AHEC), hosted by the University of Southern Indiana in Evansville, Indiana, has received funding from the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) to spearhead the Indiana SANE Training Project statewide to provide advanced nursing education to increase the number of SANE nurses.

Indiana SANE Training Project’s next Adult/Adolescent SANE Clinical Training will be held at Reid Health in Richmond, Indiana, on April 13-14. This training will feature hands-on skills sessions, practice with “live” patient models and training facilitated by experienced and board-certified Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners.

The aim of the Indiana SANE Training Project is to expand clinical training opportunities for nurses to improve clinical competence and confidence to ensure high quality forensic medical care to victims of sexual assault, according to Angie Morris, Southwest Indiana AHEC’s Indiana SANE training coordinator. She said that there will be nurses representing 12 hospitals from across Indiana at the Richmond training.

During the three-year project period, the Indiana SANE Training Project is focused on three primary goals:

  1. Increasing evidence-based, effective training of SANEs and forensic nurses working in rural and/or underserved communities to ensure competence in the care of sexual assault victims.
  2. Supporting professional development of forensic nurses in rural and/or underserved communities in Indiana.
  3. Improving the collection of data related to SANE programming in Indiana to guide future decision-making and programming.

In addition to the Indiana SANE Training Project, Southwest Indiana AHEC has offered Adult/Adolescent SANE training at USI for the past three years.
