VINCENNES, Ind. September 24, 2024 – Vincennes University was proud to welcome Indiana Governor Eric Holcomb, Indiana Secretary of Commerce David Rosenberg, and key corporate leaders for a quarterly board meeting of the Indiana Economic Development Corporation (IEDC) on the Vincennes Campus on Thursday, Sept. 19.

The meeting helped spotlight VU’s essential role in educating and training Hoosiers to drive Indiana’s economic growth and success.

Holcomb announced the IEDC’s record-breaking $38.3 billion in capital investment commitments for Q3 2024 during the public session.

VU plays a crucial role in shaping a modern and highly skilled workforce, a key factor in driving the Indiana’s economic prosperity.

Holcomb said, “I think about what they’re learning about at Vincennes University today that’s not just going to react to the future forces but actually determine what they are.”

He added, “So, what we’re doing together is so important and it allows us to have these historic reports to share. It’s changing families’ trajectories and what is possible.”

During the daylong event, the IEDC board members had the opportunity to see firsthand how

VU is educating and training students by touring various VU programs that are instrumental in creating a highly skilled workforce for major companies such as Amazon, Toyota, Cummins, John Deere, and Hershey to ensure VU graduates are industry-ready.

The tour included visiting the VU-Amazon-VU Mechatronics and Robotics Apprenticeship(MRA) Program. Since its inception in 2020 on the Vincennes Campus as a pilot program, the MRA Program has flourished under the joint efforts of VU and Amazon.

The also toured VU’s Advanced Manufacturing Technician Program, which is an earn-and-learn partnership program with Toyota Indiana, Hershey, Berry and other companies.

Holcomb highlighted the impact of these partnerships.

Holcomb said, “Indiana has stepped up, and the way that we are doing that VU President Dr. Chuck Johnson, is by aligning academia, which is so important to Toyota and our manufacturing industry here at VU and a lot of other companies as well all across the state.”

VU’s College of Technology Center, where students engage in cutting-edge robotics and advanced manufacturing training, impressed the IEDC Board. The members visited the University’s Center for Applied Robotics and Automation (CARA). VU leads the largest collaborative robot educational project in the United States.

The University’s efforts to stay ahead of technological advancements were also on display, with tours of the Additive Manufacturing and Reverse Engineering Center and the HURCO Advanced CNC Machining Technology Center. These centers provide hands-on experience for students in rapidly evolving industries.

VU President Johnson said, “Vincennes University is honored to welcome Governor Holcomb, Secretary Rosenberg, and the IEDC to VU. We are delighted to showcase the great things happening here at VU. When you talk about economic development, I know it is increasingly intertwined with workforce development and education, and VU is very proud to be at the nexus of that work in the state of Indiana, especially here in the southwestern corner.”

Johnson added, “We hope we can be seen as a continued partner for the state of Indiana’s efforts, and we want to certainly be part of helping make Indiana even stronger in the years to come.”

During his visit to the Vincennes Campus, Holcomb reflected on his strong emotional connections to VU and Knox County.

He said, “It’s extra special to be on campus. Everything started in Vincennes for the state of Indiana, and it certainly started for me here. My parents met on this very campus. Knox County is where I really got my start engaging in state government.”

VU is passionately dedicated to nurturing and empowering the future leaders of Indiana. By fostering strong partnerships with industry pioneers and prioritizing innovation, VU is actively shaping a skilled workforce that will secure Indiana’s competitive edge on national and global fronts. This commitment to academic excellence ensures a promising economic future for the state.

UE mourns the loss of men’s basketball alum Clint Keown

9/23/2024 10:36:00 AM

EVANSVILLE – The University of Evansville athletic department mourns the loss of UE Men’s Basketball alum Clint Keown, who tragically passed on Sunday.

“The University of Evansville is heartbroken to learn of the sudden passing of one of our very own, Clint Keown,” said UE Director of Athletics Dr. Ziggy Siegfried. “An Evansville legend, Clint was a member of our ’99 Men’s Basketball Championship team, and someone who cared deeply about the University and our community. Clint was someone that always seemed to have a smile on his face and a positive attitude. He will be deeply missed. Please join us in praying for Hannah, and the entire Keown family during this difficult time.”

A member of the Aces men’s basketball team from 1998 through 2001, Keown scored nearly 500 points across 70 appearances in three seasons as an Ace. Following his playing career, Keown was a loyal supporter of Evansville athletics and a frequent site at Roberts Stadium and the Ford Center.

Rodriguez and Romashkin post identical scores

ONEONTA, Ala. – After shooting identical scores in the first round of the Graeme McDowell Invitational, the duo of Andres Rodriguez and Daniil Romashkin did so once again in Monday’s second round to pace the University of Evansville men’s golf team.

Rodriguez and Romashkin both recorded scores of 75 to open the event on Sunday and came back in the second 18 holes to post rounds of 71, one under par.  Both are tied for the 40th position at Limestone Springs.

Omar Khalid made a nice improvement in the second 18 holes.  The freshman began the weekend with a 78 before lowering his score by five shots to a 2-over 74.  He is tied for 66th on the individual leaderboard.

The Purple Aces look to snap a two-game series losing skid in Cincinnati

CINCINNATI — The University of Evansville returns to Corcoran Field for the first time in almost a decade on Tuesday night.
The Purple Aces fell behind early at No. 9 Western Michigan on Sunday afternoon and weren’t able to make up the distance over 90 minutes in the 2-1 loss. It was UE’s first loss to Western Michigan in the eight-game series dating back to 1979. Sunday’s match was Evansville’s first against its first ranked opponent of the season. Currently the Aces have one more ranked opponent on the schedule in the no. 23 Bowling Green Falcons at the end of October. In 2023 UE played three ranked teams and last beat a ranked team in 2018.

After a season off from playing the Musketeers, UE returns to play at Corcoran Field for the first time since 2016. Evansville will try for the team’s first win in Cincinnati in almost 25 years on Tuesday after the two teams did not play each other for two separate six-year stretches. The two teams last met during the 2022 season in Evansville where Xavier left the River City with a 3-1 victory.

The Musketeers come into Tuesday’s game with a 3-2-3 overall record and a 1-0-0 Big East conference record. Xavier began conference play over the weekend with a 1-0 win over St. Johns for their second straight shutout match. The Musketeers are led on offense by junior defender Matthew Senanou who has three goals on the season. Xavier has had eight different players score a goal through eight matches.

Two separate UE players scored their first goals of the season in the Aces last week of matches. Redshirt freshman Jacopo Fedrizzi (Giulia, Italy) first goal came against Indiana in the 73rd minute and was the match-tying goal. While freshman defender Martin Wurschmidt (Fram, Norway) scored his first career goal at Western Michigan in the 63rd minute of the match.

Sophomore midfielder Will Bencic will play in his hometown for the first time since joining the Aces in 2023. Bencic has started the past two games for UE on the road and played at Lakota East HS in Cincinnati for four years prior to moving to Evansville.

The City Of Evansville Ignores Requests Information From Former Mayoral Candidate

1

Michael Daugherty, who ran for mayor of Evansville last year, has been looking for answers to questions about city spending. Last March, he submitted an official request for records under the Public Records Act, and after six months, he is still waiting for a reply.

The requested information involves contracts with the city and Commonwealth Engineers, Inc., between 2020 and 2024.

The request was made with Mayor Stephanie Terry’s communications director, Joe Atkinson. Daugherty has not received any follow-up communications about rejecting or processing the request.

The Public Records Act keeps the government accountable by providing guidelines for providing the public with access to documents and financial records. Government entities are required to answer formal requests for information within a reasonable time, and if they fail to do so, the act provides a process for appeal.

Daugherty is planning to take the next step to appeal the lack of response.
