Eagles salvage split with Hounds, grab No. 3 seed in GLVC Tourney

0

With the split, USI will be the No. 3 seed in the upcoming GLVC Softball Championship Tournament, which is Thursday through Saturday at the EastSide Centre in East Peoria, Illinois. USI’s loss in the opener eliminated the Eagles’ chance at grabbing the top seed, but its win in the second game figures to help their NCAA II Tournament resume.

Game 1
Indianapolis (42-12, 20-6 GLVC) used a three-run homerun in the last half of the first inning to jump out to a commanding 3-0 lead. USI, however, answered with a pair of runs in the top of the third inning as an RBI-double by senior second baseman Claire Johnson (Pittsboro, Indiana) followed by a one-out, sacrifice fly by sophomore outfielder Alicia Webb (Elberfeld, Indiana) cut the Eagles’ deficit to 3-2.

The Greyhounds, though, responded to the Eagles’ surge with a tally in the bottom of the third frame to go up 4-2.

USI (33-17, 19-7 GLVC) struggled to capitalize on scoring opportunities throughout the remainder of the contest as the Eagles left runners at the corners in both the fifth and sixth innings before getting runners at second and third with one out in the seventh.

In total, the Eagles left nine runners on base, including six in the final three innings.

Junior pitcher Jennifer Leonhardt (Louisville, Kentucky) took the loss after giving up a GLVC-only season-high four runs off nine hits in six innings of work. Leonhardt (19-7), who tied Brooke Harmening for first on USI’s all-time wins list (74) on Friday, finished the game with nine strikeouts and just one walk.

Game 2
The Greyhounds opened the scoring with two runs in the last half of the first inning, but the Eagles quickly responded with three runs in the top of the second inning to take a 3-2 advantage.

USI had three hits in the second inning and capitalized on a lead-off walk and a hit batter to score their runs. Junior shortstop Taylor Ricketts (Georgetown, Kentucky) was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to push across the first run, while freshman third baseman Mary Bean (Schaumburg, Illinois) tied the game with an RBI-fielder’s choice.

Johnson put the Eagles ahead in the next at-bat with an RBI-single, while a two-run homerun by senior outfielder/pitcher Caitlyn Bradley (Forest, Indiana) in the following inning put the Eagles in front, 5-2.

UIndy scored a run in the last half of the fifth inning and threatened to score again in the sixth with runners at first and third and two out. Bradley, however, came into the circle in the sixth to get a one-pitch third out and USI tacked on two more runs in the seventh to extend its lead to 7-3.

Senior catcher Lindsey Barr (Whitesville, Kentucky) and sophomore first baseman Haley Shouse (Borden, Indiana) each had RBIs in the seventh, while Bradley set the Greyhounds down in order in the bottom of the frame to ensure USI’s win.

Bradley picked up her team-high tying fourth save of the year, while senior pitcher Haley Smith (Florence, Kentucky) earned the win. Smith (7-2) gave up three runs off 10 hits in five-and-two-thirds innings of work, while Bradley retired all four batters she faced.

Eagles win slugfest, 17-11

UE heads to Drake next weekend to complete regular season

Freshman Jessica Fehr hit a 2-RBI single in the bottom of the sixth inning to push the University of Evansville softball team to a 4-3 win over Valparaiso on Sunday at Cooper Stadium.

Fehr’s single was the difference before Izzy Vetter limited the damage in the seventh to pick up the UE (19-26, 9-13 MVC) win.  Evansville had seven hits on the day with Katie McLean and Haley Woolf posting two apiece.  Valparaiso (15-27, 4-19 MVC) recorded six hits on the day, three coming off the bat of Jaina Westphal.

Evansville had the first threat of the day, loading the bases with one out in the first.  Katie McLean and Haley Woolf each singled before McKenzie Johnson walked, but VU starter Jenna Edwards got out of the jam unscathed.  Valparaiso notched their first hit in the top of the third when Jaina Westphal led off with a double to deep center.  Aces starter Emily Lockhart was able to retire the next three batters in order to keep the game scoreless.

In the third, the Aces were first to get on the board.  Eryn Gould and McLean walked to lead off the inning.  Haley Woolf singled to left field to score Gould on a close play at the plate.  McLean would extend the lead to 2-0 when she crossed the plate on a McKenzie Johnson ground out.

Valpo plated their first run in the ensuing inning.  The Crusaders loaded the bases with one out and scored when Taylor Herschbach reached on a fielder’s choice.  They would tie the game at 2-2 on a Westphal single.

The score remained 2-2 until the bottom of the sixth when McKenzie Johnson reached on a walk and was pinch run for by Mackenzie McFeron.  Halie Fain used her quickness to reach on a bunt single putting two on with no outs.  Allison Daggett laid down a perfect sacrifice to move the pair to second and third to bring up Jessica Fehr.  The freshman responded with one of the biggest hits of her career, singling to left to put UE back in front.

Carly Trepanier and the Crusaders battled back in the seventh as she led the inning off with a home run to right.  Valparaiso drew two walks before loading the bases with one out, but Izzy Vetter was able to escape with any further damage to clinch the win.

A trip to Des Moines, Iowa for a 3-game set against Drake will complete the regular season for the Aces.  The series begins on Friday with a 2 p.m. doubleheader before Saturday’s finale begins at 12 p.

Lt. Governor Suzanne Crouch offered the following after the passing of former U.S. Sen. Richard Lugar.

“Senator Lugar was an institution, a policymaker and true advocate for the state of Indiana. His work in Congress remains unparalleled.

His political power influenced those around him, including myself. I first was inspired to enter politics in 1982, when I worked for him on his campaign trail. I know countless individuals who are in the leadership positions they are today, because of Senator Lugar.

I join the country in mourning the incredible loss we have incurred, along with his family. Indiana would not be the state it is without him, and we are forever in his debt.”

IS IT TRUE APRIL 29, 2019

3
We hope that today’s “IS IT TRUE” will provoke honest and open dialogue concerning issues that we, as responsible citizens of this community, need to address in a rational and responsible way.

IS IT TRUE over the last several days we posted a “Readers Poll” that asked the question should THE CITY-COUNTY OBSERVER continue to publish their “IS IT TRUE” column? …we stated in last week’s ‘IS IT TRUE” column that unless there is a resounding public outcry for the “IS IT TRUE” column to be continued along with additional financial commitment (advertising) to support what it takes to do this column on a regular basis that this will be the last “IS IT TRUE”?  …a part of us wants to keep up the fight, but another part would like to live in peace without constant threats, disruption, and ostracism? …we urge you to go to today’s CCO “READERS POLL” and vote? …the fate of the City-County Observer “IS IT TRUE” is up to you?

IS IT TRUE our loyal readers and advertisers spoke in a resounding way and give us an unbelievable vote of confidence by a phenomenal 95% margin? …as of 10:30 last night, 841 people voted in this ‘Readers Poll”? …the “MOLE NATION” have spoken loud and clear?  …that 789 voted “YES”. 29 voted “NO” and 23 voted that they “Had No Idea”?

IS IT TRUE it looks like our mission to continue to call out the failure of our elected officials for choosing fun and games over substance, exposed idiocy and self-serving squandering of taxpayer dollars in search of votes, take the powers to task every time they do something underhanded to pick the taxpayer’s pockets?…we also pledge to continue to point to things like drug addiction in the parks, political patronage, nepotism, an escalating murder rate, and the neglect of public infrastructure for golden shovel photo ops?

IS IT TRUE that it looks like the “IS IT TRUE” column will be continued because we are also told we can expect additional financial commitment (advertising) to support what it takes to do this column on a regular basis?  …we are humbled by your support and pledge that we will continue to be your community “WATCHDOG”?

IS IT TRUE last week there was an item on the City Council agenda called the “Jacobsville Redevelopment Resolution”? …the purpose of this resolution is to expand the Jacobsville Redevelopment District in order to spur additional businesses in the area? …this resolution is called the MRDPA (Municipal Riverfront Development Project Area) and was created as a tool by the State of Indiana back in 1993 and has provided to many cities and towns help to expand their Urban/Economic Development areas without raising taxes?

IS IT TRUE that Indiana state statute requires that the MRDPA fall within 3,000 feet of the river or body of water and be designated redevelopment areas, which then can provide numerous business incentives such as a non-transferable special liquor license permit to help develop designated suppressed areas? …that Evansville DMD has utilized the MDRPA very successfully over the years by allowing Main Street and Haynie’s Corner businesses to utilize these special non-transferable liquor licenses?

IS IT TRUE that the Evansville DMD just the designated new MRDPA area that falls in Pigeon Township because it’s an economically depressed area that has many vacant buildings, blight, and businesses that have failed?

IS IT TRUE that the City Council just approved the Jacobsville Redevelopment Resolution during their last meeting by a vote of 6 to 3? …the three City Council members who voted “NO” were Justin Elpers, Gabriel John Hayden and Missy Mosby?  …we are told that they voted for this same issue in other parts of the City of Evansville in the past?  …we are now told that since the last City Council meeting that there are two new businesses that have applied for this special MDRPA non-transferable liquor license permit?  …the businesses are the Rathbone and Evansville Brewhouse, which are located in the Haynie’s Corner area? …if these permits are approved by City Council this will make around 27 local bars and restaurants that have been approved for this special non-transferable liquor license since the law was adopted by the State??  …we hope that City Council members Justin Elpers, Gabriel John Hayden and Missy Mosby will correct the errors of their ways and vote for the Brewhouse and Rathbone special MDRPA  non-transferable liquor license permit?

IS IT TRUE we are proud of the success of the Ivy Tech LPN Nursing students for posting a 100% pass rates for their LPN State tests? …we would like to congratulate Ivy Tech-Evansville Chancellor Jonathan Weinzapfel and the faculty of Ivy Tech for preparing the LPN student for passing this extremely challenging test?

IS IT TRUE we are told that the At-Large Evansville City Council candidate Alex Schmitt led all GOP candidates by raising an impressive $22,000 through the reporting period?  …that GOP primary candidate Ron Beane reported that he raised around $11,000?

Todays“Readers Poll” question is: Should City Council have known who was paying the $3 million dollar costs to dismantle the dock at Marina Pointe before approving the move of the LST to the Tropicana area?
