Home Run Ball Hurts Otters In Loss To Miners

0

In their final road exhibition, the Otters could not overcome the home run ball by the Miners offense, falling by a score of 8-1.

After a scoreless first inning, the Miners were able to get on the board first as Alex Santana smacked an RBI triple deep into the outfield to make the score 1-0. After a wild pitch by Otters pitcher Austin Nicely, Santana stole home safely to extend the Miners lead to two.

The Otters would score their first run of the game in the fifth inning when Rob Calabrese cut the Miners lead in half on an RBI double, scoring Jack Meggs.

Similar to the Jacob’s Village game last week, the Miners were not afraid to show their ability to hit the ball over the fence in Tuesday’s contest.

In the fifth and sixth innings, Andy Cosgrove and Chris Iriart both blasted two-run homers respectively to extend the Miners lead to 7-1.

The Miners would add another run before it was all said and done in the ninth inning, as they would win the game 8-1.

The Otters will come back to Bosse Field Wednesday, May 8 at 10 a.m. for Education Day against the Black Sox, a professional traveling team.

Game updates Wednesday will be available on the Otters’ Facebook and Twitter pages.

The Otters will open the 25th season celebration against the Southern Illinois Miners on May 10 at Bosse Field.

USI’s Limper awarded NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship

0

University of Southern Indiana Volleyball senior libero Haley Limper (Springfield, Illinois) has been named an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship award winner.

Limper, recently graduated summa cum laude with her degree in health services, is awarded a one-time non-renewable scholarship of $10,000 for part-time or full-time postgraduate study at a university or professional school.

The NCAA awards up to 126 postgraduate scholarships annually. The scholarships are awarded to student-athletes who excel academically and athletically and who are at least in their final year of intercollegiate athletics competition.

Each sports season, there are 21 scholarships available for men and 21 for women for use in an accredited graduate program. All former student-athletes who earned an undergraduate degree from an NCAA member school are eligible to be nominated by that school for an NCAA graduate degree scholarship, regardless of when they received their undergraduate degree.

The NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship was created in 1964 to promote and encourage graduate education by rewarding the Association’s most accomplished student-athletes through their participation in NCAA championship and/or emerging sports. Athletics and academic achievements, campus involvement, community service, volunteer activities and demonstrated leadership are evaluated in the selection process.

An equitable approach is employed in reviewing an applicant’s nomination form to provide all student-athlete nominees an opportunity to receive the graduate award, regardless of sport, division, gender or race. In maintaining the highest broad-based standers in the selection process, the program aims to reward those individuals whose dedication and effort are reflective of those characteristics necessary to succeed and thrive through graduate study.

“Haley has balanced her undergraduate academic life with a comprehensive approach to the major and career development process,” USI Faculty Athletic Representative Brody Broshears said. “She is a strong student and has utilized University Division services throughout her academic career to enhance her academic performance, all the while balancing coursework with participation (and serving as a captain in her senior year) on the USI Women’s Volleyball team. Haley certainly understands the commitment needed to succeed in graduate school, and the sacrifices she will need to make to continue as she moves forward academically to pursue her career goals of becoming an Occupational Therapist.”

Limper played in 113 matches for the Screaming Eagles throughout her four-year career at USI. She finished her career ranked 14th all-time at USI with 950 career digs and was USI’s starting libero as a senior in 2018.

Academically, Limper has excelled in the classroom, where she will finish her career as a four-time Academic All-GLVC honoree.

“Haley has proven herself to be an exceptional student-athlete, with successes both in the classroom and on the volleyball court,” said Dr. Ann White, dean of the USI College of Nursing and Health Professions. “It is quite an honor for her to receive this national scholarship from the NCAA, and we are delighted that her degree in Health Services at USI has prepared her for the next phase of her educational journey.”

IS IT TRUE MAY 7, 2019

1

We hope that today’s “IS IT TRUE” will provoke honest and open dialogue concerning issues that we, as responsible citizens of this community, need to address in a rational and responsible way.

IS IT TRUE today the candidates that participated in the intra-party primary will see how effective their speech-making, door-to-door campaigning and political adverting were?

IS IT TRUE The City-County Observer is beginning to see some positive changes coming to Evansville?  …those changes are within local party politics and they have been needed for decades?

IS IT TRUE In today’s primary, the voters are blessed to have a combination of the experienced incumbent and political newcomers to choose from?  …we are hopeful that the entitlement mentality, political patronage, nepotism practices will become a thing of the past?   …It’s our hope that starting today a new generation of political leaders will emerge that will practice ‘Good Public Policy?”

IS IT TRUE we are at the crossroads for building a progressive future for Evansville, and if we do not choose fiscally responsible and forward-thinking candidates we will all pay the price for their folly.?  …Please choose wisely when you vote today in the Republican and Democratic primaries?

IS IT TRUE we thank all the candidates who felt the need to run for public office in order to make Evansville a better place to live, work and raise a family?

IS IT TRUE that the final decision whom we shall be put on the November general ballot is now in your hands and we urge you to please choose wisely.

IS IT TRUE that it is time for all civic-minded Hoosiers who want to have a say in who gets nominated to get off of their butts and go vote in todays primary? …Often primaries are neglected and that is part of the reason that we always are choosing between a fool and a joker when the real election day comes in November?…in the past Evansville has suffered from staggeringly low primary turnouts with less than 10% of eligible voters choosing to cast a ballot?

IS  IT TRUE even when the stakes are higher in a Mayoral race there are often no more than 20% of eligible voters who bother to exercise their right to self-governance? …this time around it looks like the city of Evansville Mayoral election is going to be effectively unopposed for the second time in recent history?…that friendly and somewhat possible Mayor Lloyd Winnecke is looking like a shoo-in for a third term as no Democrat has tossed their hat into the ring?…even if someone from a third, fourth, or fifth party decides to play the election game, Mayor Winnecke is poised to become the first 3 term mayor in a long long time?

IS IT TRUE that it has only happened one other time and that was when Frank McDonald Sr. was elected to three consecutive terms starting in 1960 and ending in 1972 when a Republican avalanche took the place over?…it just so happens that the highest population recorded by a census in Evansville, it was in 1960 when Big Frank took over?…the population then was over 144,000 and today it sits stagnant at 117,000 and that includes a lot of annexed areas that were not in the boundaries of 1960?…some would easily conclude that the start of the decline of Evansville started in 1960?

IS IT TRUE that one Hoosier is making big news these days and the name of the person is Mayor Pete Buttigieg of South Bend?… South Bend much like Evansville is an old blue collar town that has been passed over by the modern economic expansions?… Mayor Pete as Buttigieg is called was first elected Mayor in 2011 by winning 11,991 votes in a town of about 110,000 people?… Mayor Pete was reelected in 2015 in an Evansville style no contest election with a whopping 8,515 votes?…he has cleverly parlayed those 8,515 votes into a marketing genius that has him sitting in 3rd place nationally for the Democrat nomination for President of the United States?…it is truly ironic that a small city mayor who got less than 10% of his constituents’ votes is making a serious run at the White House?…it is even more ironic since South Bend is a less scenic place outside of the beautiful Notre Dame campus?…when the national news comes to South Bend, it may tank Mayor Pete’s chances because most of the country does not want to be like South Bend?… Mayor Pete did make some good decisions as Mayor though since he chose blight elimination and sewer repairs over the Evansville way of fun and games followed by more fun and games?…who knows, if former Mayor Jonathan Weinzapfel had concentrated on blight and infrastructure instead of a hockey rink, he may be in the discussion for President as the dearly departed Democrat Strongman Larry Aiken said he could?

IS IT TRUE that another CCO staff member went to “AMY’S ON FRANKLIN” on Saturday night and was also impressed by his incredible steak, service, and atmosphere? …he predicts that “AMY’S ON FRANKLIN” will quickly become one of the area’s favorite places for people to take their family and friends to wine and dine?

FOOTNOTES: Todays “Readers’ Poll” question is: How are you planning to vote in today’s election primary?

EVSC to Host Signing Day

0

OptIN Signing Day

Wednesday, May 8

10 a.m.

Old National Events Plaza

This is an exciting time of year for area high school seniors. They are eagerly anticipating graduation and making plans for the future, many of them signing with their favorite college or university. In addition to honoring those students who are pursuing postsecondary education, this year the EVSC also will honor students who plan to enter the workforce or military immediately following high school.

The EVSC, through its OptIN program – in collaboration with the OptIN Advisory Council – will host a signing day Wednesday, May 8, at 10 a.m. at the Old National Events Plaza for EVSC seniors whose passions, skills and interests have led them to directly enter the workforce or military upon high school graduation. The signing day, sponsored by the Southwest Indiana Chamber of Commerce, serves as a way to value and recognize their hard work, including career preparation and industry certifications they have earned. Students participating in the signing day already have high-wage, high-demand positions lined up with local employers upon graduation.

Approximately 80 students will be in attendance and various industry sectors and the military will be present to recognize students for their success.

About OptIN:

The EVSC announced the creation of OptIN – Opportunities through Partnerships that Transform and Inspire – in December 2017. OptIN educates students and their families on postsecondary and career options that best match their interests and strengths. OptIN matches students’ passions with open positions in our community by ensuring students have the education and transferable skills necessary for today’s workforce.

Last August, OptIN unveiled its very own Governor’s Work Ethic Certificate (GWEC) which is a college and career readiness opportunity for seniors to identify, develop and demonstrate they have the skills necessary to be successful in college and career. The skills measured by the GEWC were the result of months of collaboration with community leaders and the area’s top employers.

Most recently, OptIN announced RAMP, a first-of-its-kind embedded work-based learning program in Indiana where selected students will spend their entire day onsite at AmeriQual. Half of the day will be spent as employees of AmeriQual, earning a wage and learning the skills necessary to be successful. The other half of the day will be spent in a classroom at AmeriQual completing the requirements for high school graduation.

EVSC Names New Central Head Football Coach

0

The EVSC Board of School Trustees approved the appointment of Sean Coultis as the new head football coach at Central High School. Coultis has served as a head football coach and an offensive and defensive coordinator in both Indiana and Illinois for 12 years.

Coultis graduated from Indiana University with a B.A. in Kinesiology. He also holds a M. A. in Special Education from Concordia University and also is a USA Weightlifting Certified Coach. Most recently, Coultis was the varsity defensive coordinator at Bolingbrook High school in Illinois. While at Bolingbrook, he taught athletic weights in the kinetic wellness department.

Under his leadership and assistance, Bolingbrook High School won the 8A (largest class in Illinois) state championship in 2011. During his tenure at Bolingbrook, the football program had an 80-19 regular season record. The 2013 Bolingbrook team finished the regular season undefeated and were the conference champions. The team finished the season as the number one ranked team in Illinois, and Bolingbrook defense allowed a state leading average of only eight points a game. Throughout his coaching experience, Coultis coached multiple NFL and Division 1 football players.

Prior to his current coaching at Bolingbrook, Coultis served as head varsity football coach at New Albany High School during the 2015 and 2016 seasons. Under his leadership, the team won nine games after winning only one game the prior season before his arrival. In addition to his work on the field, Coultis has served as a featured speaker at many Glazier football clinics throughout the Midwest.

“Coach Coultis is excited to become a Bear and work with our students both inside and outside of the classroom, said Andy Owen, EVSC director of athletics. “He brings a wealth of experience both on and off the field, and comes to the EVSC as a very highly recommended teacher and coach. He is committed to building upon the current youth and high school football programs.  He has the passion, knowledge and energy to continue to move Central’s football program in the right direction.”
