Indiana Joins Nationwide lawsuit Against Generic Drugmakers

Staff Report
TheStatehouseFile.com

INDIANAPOLIS—Indiana has joined 43 states in a lawsuit against Teva Pharmaceuticals and 19 of the nation’s largest generic drug manufacturers, accusing them of conspiring to inflate and manipulate drug prices.

The lawsuit also says the drug companies reduced competition for more than 100 different generic drugs by engaging in a coordinated and systematic campaign to conspire with each other to fix prices, allocate markets so they wouldn’t compete against each other and rig bids for the drugs.

The lawsuit, filed Friday in U.S. District Court in Connecticut, names 15 additional individual senior executive defendants responsible for sales, marketing, pricing, and operations. Besides Teva, some of the other drug companies named in the civil suit include Pfizer, Mylan, and Sandoz.

The lawsuit says that the conduct of the drug companies resulted in higher prices to the health insurance market, Medicare and Medicaid, as well as causing individuals to pay inflated costs for prescription medications.

“This lawsuit should serve as a warning to any company that intentionally defies the trust of their customers,” said Attorney General Curtis Hill in a news release. “The rising cost of health care is daunting enough without price fixing of medications. Americans deserve options when they shop for these products.”

He said that pharmaceutical companies that engage in price-fixing and artificial cost inflation are part of the problem that ails health care in the United States.

Some of the medications affected by the alleged price-fixing scheme include medications for diabetes, cancer, epilepsy, multiple sclerosis, HIV, ADHD and more, according to the lawsuit.  In some instances, price increases were more than 1,000 percent.

The lawsuit also said that competitors communicated frequently during social gatherings and through phone calls, emails, and text messages. The lawsuit seeks damages, civil penalties and actions by the court to restore competition to the generic drug market.

Southern Indiana Career & Technical Center Students To Showcase Drone Training

0
Students enrolled in the EVSC’s Southern Indiana Career and Technical Center engineering and radio/broadcasting classes have been working all year to train in operating small unmanned aerial systems (sUAS), also known as drones. In addition to course curriculum, students received 10 hours of flight training which will culminate tomorrow at the Vanderburgh County 4H Center where students will once again have the opportunity to showcase what they have learned and send their sUAS into the air.
In addition to completing coursework, some of the students took and passed the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) exam to obtain a Remote Pilot Certification which allows students to operate a sUAS in a business/industry setting. By having these skills and qualifications, students have yet another option for employment in a number of fields, including construction, broadcasting, public safety, and even agriculture.
The program was created by the Southern Indiana Career and Technical Center to fill the need in the community to educate students on how to properly operate a sUAS and give companies that are expanding into this type of technology an employment pool of certified remote pilots.

Gould picks up two more accolades

Already a 2-time All-Missouri Valley Conference First Team player, University of Evansville sophomore Eryn Gould picked up two more accolades in recent days.

Gould was named to the All-Tournament Team at the 2019 MVC Softball Championship in Peoria, Ill. on Saturday before earning a spot on the MVC Scholar-Athlete Second Team on Sunday.

In the Purple Aces’ contest in Peoria, Gould was UE’s top performer.  She went 2-3 with a walk; she had two of the Aces’ six hits in the game.

Overall, Gould batted .306 in the regular season, but saw that average rise to .338 in league play.  Over 25 conference games, Gould slugged .563 while hitting four homers and 15 RBI while scoring 18 runs and walking on 18 occasions.

Throughout the course of the season, she led the Aces in at-bats, runs, hits, doubles, home runs, RBI, slugging and walks.  Gould had a 12-game hit streak in April and was named the MVC Player of the Week on April 22.  Gould is a Biology major and has a GPA of 3.39.
