 Republican Caucus Fills Vacancies: 
A Republican Caucus was held Monday evening, June 24, 2019 to fill a vacant Evansville City Council Ward 3 seat and a vacancy on the German Township Advisory Board.
Steve Melcher was the only candidate to file for the Ward 3 caucus, and was confirmed to fill the vacancy created by former councilman John Hayden, who resigned due to moving out of Ward 3. Melcher will complete the current term for  City Council Ward 3, which ends December 31, 2019. Melcher is also the GOP candidate for Ward 3 on the November ballot.
Nancy Whitsell was the lone candidate put before the German Township caucus to fill the vacancy on the German Township Advisory Board. The German Township Advisory Board vacancy is due to the resignation of  John Bassemier, who moved out of German Township. Whitsell will complete the current  Advisory Board Board term, which will end December 31, 2022.

Volunteers are needed to staff the VCRP Tent during this year’s 4-H Fair. The 4-H Fair will be held July 22 – July 27, and volunteers are needed 4:00PM – 8:00PM daily. Duties will include distributing candidate information, passing out balloons to children, and promoting voter registration. The VCRP Tent is located near the 4-H Industrial Building .

New Laws Take Effect July 1, 2019  - 
 During the 2019 legislative session, the Indiana General Assembly passed many bills to improve our state. Most of these bills went into effect when signed by Gov. Eric Holcomb or will go into effect July 1, 2019.
State Senators Jim Tomes and Vaneta Becker point out a few of the new laws that will take effect July 1.

Senate Enrolled Act 1 expands the legal rights of foster parents by allowing them to be heard in court cases involving the children in their care.

House Enrolled Act 1284, which I sponsored, allows a person to receive a voter registration form at a police station while they are there to apply for a gun permit.

Senate Enrolled Act 85 increases retirement benefits for police, firefighters and emergency personnel who retire after July 1.

Senate Enrolled Act 216 allows direct family members of returning veterans to be eligible for in-state tuition at Indiana public universities, even if they have never lived in Indiana before.

House Enrolled Act 1211, which I sponsored,makes dismemberment abortions illegal unless necessary to prevent a serious health risk to the mother or to save the mother’s life.

Senate Enrolled Act 110 enhances the penalty for dealing drugs near a substance-abuse rehabilitation program.

House Enrolled Act 1607 allows a person to get a protective order against someone who has been harassing them. Previously, one could only get a protective order against someone who had committed violence against them.

Senate Enrolled Act 243 makes it a crime to distribute an intimate image of another person without their consent.

Senate Enrolled Act 1, which I co-authored, expands the legal rights of foster parents by allowing them to be heard in court cases involving the children in their care.

Senate Enrolled Act 480, which I authored, creates a commission to oversee nonemergency medical transportation services, such as Southeastrans, and provides the state with resources to hold them accountable if patients miss or are late for appointments due to issues with the transportation service.

Senate Enrolled Act 198 provides Indiana with a comprehensive hate-crime law, allowing judges to increase a person’s sentence if their crime was based on bias against any trait of the victim.

In addition to these bills going into effect on July 1, House Enrolled Act 1010 retroactively went into effect on Jan. 1, 2019. HEA 1010 increases the income tax deduction for retired military members and their families, supporting our own Hoosier veterans while attracting others to the state.

 Bray announces interim study committee assignments:

 On June 19, 2019, Senate President Pro Tem Rodric Bray (R-Martinsville) announced interim study committee assignments for members of the Indiana Senate. Interim study committees are comprised of members of the Senate and House of Representatives, and meet over the summer and fall months when the Indiana General Assembly is not in session in order to help lawmakers prepare for the upcoming session. Members of the Senate will chair the 2019 interim study committees, with members of the House of Representatives serving as vice chairs.

Topics for study are assigned by the Legislative Council, which is comprised of eight members of the Indiana Senate and eight members of the Indiana House of Representatives. Seton Harvest will be bringing their produce van full of fresh vegetables to share with local community.

“Right Jab And Left Jab” was created because we have two commenters that post on a daily basis either in our “IS IT TRUE” or “Readers Forum” columns concerning National or International issues.
Joe Biden and Ronald Reagan’s comments are mostly about issues of national interest.  The majority of our “IS IT TRUE” columns are about local or state issues, so we have decided to give Mr. Biden and Mr. Reagan exclusive access to our newly created “LEFT JAB and RIGHT JAB”  column. They now have this post to exclusively discuss national or world issues that they feel passionate about.
We shall be posting the “LEFT JAB” AND “RIGHT JAB” several times a week.  Oh, “Left Jab” is a liberal view and the “Right Jab is representative of the more conservative views. Also, any reader who would like to react to the written comments of the two gentlemen is free to do so.

Long named Frontier League Player of the Week

The Frontier League has named Evansville Otters player Ryan Long the Player of the Week.

Pointstreak, the official statistical provider of the Frontier League and the Independent Professional Baseball Federation, chooses the weekly award.

In earning the award, continues his push for an All-Star selection, going 8-16 at the plate last week.

“Ryan’s one of the best hitters in the league, and I’m glad to see he has gotten this recognition,” Otters manager Andy McCauley said.

“He’s been very patient at the plate and not missing many good pitches to hit.”

Long finished the week driving in eight runs in five games, as well as hitting two home runs, three doubles and accumulating a 1.589 OPS for the week. With another strong week, Long sees himself leading the league with 33 RBIs on the season and fourth in OPS at .933.

“Ryan is a professional hitter that works hard to keep his swing consistent throughout the summer,” McCauley said.

Long earned the second league honor for Evansville this season as former starting pitcher Randy Wynne was awarded the league’s Pitcher of the Week honor on May 13 after Opening Weekend.

Long is from Crandall, Texas and joined the Otters in June of 2017. Last season, Long hit .292 with 59 runs, 55 RBIs, 48 walks and led the team with 12 home runs, earning a Frontier League All-Star selection.

President Trump’s Executive Order is a Big Win for Healthcare Transparency

Following being recognized by President Trump for his work on behalf of healthcare transparency for American patients at the signing of today’s executive order on transparency, Senator Mike Braun released the following statement and video.

“President Trump is taking decisive action to bring transparency to negotiated hospital rates, which will reduce surprise medical bills and lower the cost of the healthcare,” said U.S. Senator Mike Braun.  “This executive order compliments solutions I’ve offered to ensure patients know what they’re paying for and hold the healthcare industry accountable, which is a win for all Americans.”
