UE’s Department of Art Announces Les Miley Artist’s Exhibition to Run September 3 To October 19

The University of Evansville’s Department of Art will host an exhibition of selected works by UE professor emeritus, Les Miley, a nationally and internationally recognized artist and art educator. The exhibition will open on Tuesday, September 3 and runs until Sunday, October 19.

On Thursday, September 5, the public is invited to a reception at 6:30 p.m. followed by an artist’s talk Miley at 7:00 p.m. in the Melvin Peterson Gallery at 1935 Lincoln Avenue in Evansville, Ind.

Miley joined the UE art faculty in 1961 and retired as chair of the Department of Art in 2001. He served as the director and instructor of the Ceramics Workshop in New Harmony, Ind. from 1966 to 2009 and feature articles and photographs of his work have been included in nine prestigious publications.

The exhibition has been curated from several collections and will also include works by a selection Miley’s previous students.

“My works in clay are a celebration of life with an emphasis on the joyful, positive aspects of living in this world, said Miley. “Fundamental to my work in clay, and in my living experience, is a sense of order combined with an element of chance.”

Otters To Face Rascals In FLDS Starting Today

Following the Evansville Otters claiming the Frontier League West Division title on Saturday, the 2019 Frontier League postseason field was set with the Otters drawing the River City Rascals in the first round divisional series.

The Otters won their first division title since 1999 on Saturday when they clinched the West Division over the Florence Freedom.

Evansville earned the top seed in the postseason and will face a familiar opponent in the River City Rascals in the FLDS.

The Rascals are also in the West Division, finishing third in the standings but are the fourth seed in the playoffs.

Evansville went 5-7 against River City in the regular season but won two of three in their last meeting of the season at Bosse Field.

The FLDS schedule is as follows:

Tuesday, Sept. 3 – Evansville at River City from CarShield Field in O’Fallon, Mo. at 6:35 p.m. CT.

Wednesday, Sept 4 – Evansville at River City from CarShield Field in O’Fallon, Mo. at 6:35 p.m. CT.

Thursday, Sept. 5 – Travel/Rain Makeup Date

Friday, Sept. 6 – River City at Evansville from Bosse Field in Evansville, Ind. at 6:35 p.m. CT.

Saturday, Sept. 7 – River City at Evansville from Bosse Field in Evansville, Ind. at 6:35 p.m. CT (if necessary).

Sunday, Sept. 8 – River City at Evansville from Bosse Field in Evansville, Ind. at TBA CT (if necessary).

With the FLDS being a best-of-five series, games four and five in Evansville will be played if necessary.

FOOTNOTE: The winner between Evansville and River City will take on the winner between Florence and Lake Erie in the Frontier League Championship Series the following week.

 

VICTORY INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL START ON SEPTEMBER 12, 2019

We will be showing 120 films from 30 countries during this event. The “Opening Night Celebration” is scheduled on the evening of the September 12th at the Victory Theatre from 6 pm to 9:30 pm with an after-party to follow.
The screenings will begin at noon on Friday, September 13th and we will have a multiple of venues locationss throughout downtown Evansville.  The venues are; Central Library, Innovation Pointe, Encounter Church, and Old National Public Theatre at WNIN.
Screenings on Saturday the 14th will go from 10 am to 6 pm and ending with an Awards Ceremony at Encounter Church at 7 pm and will have an after-party event to follow.
The organizers will also have panels and presentations on acting, producing, marketing, scoring, working with film commissions, and also a presentation by an employee of SAG-AFTRA.
As of today, this event will have over 38 filmmakers with selections in competition at the festival, many of them coming from out of state including many from the East and West coasts.  Also, movies to be shown crosses all genres being features and shorts from that are documentaries, comedies, dramas, sci-fi, student, horror, animation – you name it, we’ve got it.
Matthew Ulm, Festival Director said, “Many of our selections have screened at Sundance, Vancouver International Film Festival, Toronto International Film Festival, Atlanta Film Festival, and Cannes.”

Eagles kick-off 2019 with two road matches Match begins three-match non-conference slate

The University of Southern Indiana men’s soccer team opens its 2019 campaign with a two-match non-conference road slate in Michigan, beginning at Northern Michigan University Thursday in Marquette. The Screaming Eagles and the Wildcats are set to kick off at 4 p.m. (CDT) Thursday.

The road trip to Michigan concludes October 8 when USI visits Northwood University for an 11 a.m. (CDT) contest in Midland. Following the road trip, USI opens the 2019 home schedule and the defense of its 2018 GLVC regular season title by hosting McKendree University at Strassweg Field.

Week 1 Eagle Notes:

11 four-year players: The Eagles boast nine seniors this season, including eight four-year USI players. This group of seniors have combined for 438 matches (an average of 49 career games and an average of 16 games per season) in the Eagles’ uniform.

The offense returns in 2019: USI returns every player who scored last season, a total of 32 goals in 18 matches. Senior midfielder Sean Rickey led the way last year for the Eagles with 28 points on 11 goals and six assists and a team-high five game-winning goals. Senior forward Eric Ramirez followed with 18 points on eight goals and two assists and three game-winners.

Returning between the posts: USI junior goalkeeper Justin Faas returns between the posts for the Eagles in 2019 after posting 1.01 goals against average in 1610 minutes of action. He also had a career-high eight shutouts in 2018.

Santoro begins his 11th year: USI Head Coach Mat Santoro has an 88-74-18 overall record at the helm. Santoro has guided the Eagles to a pair of NCAA II Tournament appearances; the 2018 GLVC regular season crown, and five GLVC Tournament appearances during his tenure.

USI tabbed fourth in GLVC poll: The Eagles are predicted to place fourth in the GLVC preseason poll of the league’s coaches. USI won the GLVC regular season with an 11-1-1 conference record before falling in the first round of the GLVC Tournament.

USI received votes for the preseason poll: USI received votes for the first time in program history in the United Soccer Coaches preseason poll.

Return to the GLVC Tournament: USI is looking for its fifth-straight trip to the GLVC Tournament for the first time since 1979-84 seasons.

GLVC leader in championships: USI has 10 GLVC men’s soccer titles since the conference was created in 1979, the most by any program in the league. The Eagles won the conference championships in 1979, 1980, 1981, 1982, 1983, 1984, 1988, 1989, 1990, and 1991.

Eagles in openers: USI is 21-17-2 all-time is season openers after beginning the last five seasons with victories.

USI versus Northern Michigan: USI lost the first-ever match-up versus Northern Michigan last year at Strassweg Field, 2-0.

The Wildcats in 2018: Northern Michigan is coming off a 6-6-5 2018 campaign that saw them end the season in the quarterfinals of the GLIAC Tournament.

USI versus Northwood: USI won the only meeting with Northwood, 1-0, at Strassweg Field in 2008. Forward Dan Dormeier had the game-winning goal for the Eagles in the victory.

The Timberwolves in 2018: The Timberwolves of Northwood completed the 2018 season with a 9-9-1 overall record before concluding the season by falling in the GLIAC Tournament championship game.

Michael Anthony Belle Sr

Michael Anthony Belle Sr was born June 22, 1951 to Donald Edward and Joyce Lee Woolfolk Belle in Providence, Kentucky. He passed away on August 31, 2019 at his home with his loving family.

On July 10, 1976 he was baptized as one of Jehovah’s Witnesses and later served as a Ministerial Servant for many years in the Providence and Madisonville Congregations.
He was preceded in death by his parents Donald and Joyce Belle and his brother Ronnie Belle.

He is survived by his wife, Zorida Auzela; three sons, Michael Anthony Belle Jr., Nicholis Arpaia Belle, Miciah Azalee Belle; two daughters, Christy Lee Belle and Jillian Terah (Shawn) Atkins; 19 grandchildren, Timmarah, Azalee, Arianna, Lauren, Hakim, Jakar, Brooklyn, Jaciah, Tyler, Vetezion, Arpaia, Markenize, Aron, Mahlon, Tehya, Azary, Shadira, Tashiah and Nicholis, three great grandchildren, brothers; Juan (Helen), Wayne (Anita) and Carlos (Jennifer), sisters; Reba Lawrence, Donna (Bill) Stafford, Myra Scott, Leah (Warren) Grayer, sister-in-law; Sherrie Belle, aunts; Shirley Young, Revella (Calbert) Brooks, Sheila (Bobby) Hawkins and Valeria (James) Hyde, many nieces, nephews, cousins and Friends.

Kenneth Albert Catron

Kenneth Albert Catron, 69, of Chandler, Indiana passed away peacefully at Cypress Grove Rehabilitation Center in Newburgh, Indiana on August 28, 2019.
Kenneth was born December 30, 1949, in Evansville, to Albert and Aline Catron. He has lived in Chandler his whole life and was a graduate of Castle High School, class of 1967. Kenneth served in the United States Army from 1969 to 1971, during the Vietnam War as a Radio Repair Mechanic and spent 10 months in Vietnam. He supported his family by his hard work at Bootz Mfg. Co. for approximately 45 years. Kenneth dedicated his spare time to the Boy Scouts of America. He was a Den Leader for Chandler, IN Cub Scout Pack 166 in 1997-1998. He was an Assistant Cubmaster for the pack. He was Scoutmaster for Chandler, IN troop 165 from 2001 to 2003. During this time, he helped pave the way for many scouts to earn the top Eagle Scout Award. He was awarded the Lincoln Heritage District Award of Merit in 2004. He was an Assistant Course Director for the Wood Badge advanced leaders’ course during the late 2000’s. In 2008 he earned top Vigil Honor in the Order of the Arrow, scouting’s national honor society. He served on the Lincoln Heritage District Eagle Scout Board. He served on the Buffalo Trace Council Committee. He volunteered as a Campmaster for Old Ben Scout Reservation near Winslow, IN.
Upon retiring in 2011, Kenneth volunteered his time at the Mother Teresa thrift shop. He has been a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Parish in Newburgh since 1985. His favorite holiday was always Christmas. Kenneth was a handyman. He had the knowledge and skills to repair and fix anything. He had a green thumb. His garden will surely be missed.
He is survived by his wife of 34 years, Ruby Presbitero Catron; son, Timothy Alan Catron of Parker, CO; sister, Paula (Bill) Clark of Boonville, IN; sister, Karen (Bill) Richardson of Cloverdale, IN; several nieces and nephews.
Kenneth is preceded in death by his mother, Aline Persinger Catron; father, Albert I. Catron; sisters, Bonnie Catron and Faith Catron Kellems.
The family would like to thank Cypress Grove Rehabilitation Center and Southern Care Hospice for their tender and loving care. The family would also like to thank Don Persinger (cousin) for all his help and support during Kenneth’s illness.
Viewing will be held at the Koehler Funeral Home Perigo Chapel in Chandler on September 4, 2019 from 2pm to 7pm and again on September 5, 2019 from 8am to 10am. Funeral Service will on September 5, 2019 at 10am at the Perigo Chapel. Burial will follow at Greenwood Cemetery in Chandler where military honors will be conducted.
Memorial contributions may be made to Boonville Scout Troop 161, St. John the Baptist Catholic Parish, or the American Cancer Society.
