Defense leads Lady Blazers to big win over Kaskaskia College

VINCENNES, Ind. – The Vincennes University Lady Trailblazers bounced back in a big way Tuesday evening as they got back into the win column over Kaskaskia College 70-36 inside the Physical Education Complex.

The Lady Blazer defense ran the show for Vincennes all night, forcing 30 Blue Angel turnovers as the short-handed Lady Blazers picked up their third win of the season.

Vincennes got the game started with a bang, after the Blue Angels scored the first basket of the night, VU responded back by scoring 11 straight to take an early 11-3 lead.

VU would continue to grow the lead through the end of the first quarter, closing out the first 10 minutes of action by outscoring Kaskaskia 7-2 to take an 18-9 lead after the first period.

The Lady Blazers kept the defensive pressure going in the second quarter, holding the Blue Angels scoreless for most of the second period while using an 11-0 scoring run to increase their lead to 29-9.

Vincennes held strong to close out the first half of play, heading into the locker room at the break holding a big 37-15 lead over Kaskaskia.

Kaskaskia was able to get some shots to drop early in the third quarter, cutting the Vincennes lead down to 40-23 before the Lady Blazers used a 7-0 scoring run to take a 57-31 lead into the fourth quarter.

Vincennes was able to regain composure on the defensive end of the floor in the fourth quarter, holding the Blue Angels to just five points in the final 10 minutes as Vincennes capitalized on another 11-0 scoring run to close out a big 70-36 victory over Kaskaskia.

“As far as defense goes, we stuck with our zone defense most of the game,” VU Interim Head Coach Ingrida Hartsfield said. “We switched it up a little bit between a 2-3 or a 1-2-2. We really were just working on defense and really preparing for Saturday. But I do believe tonight was more about defensive play than offensive play.”

The Lady Blazers were led offensively by an outstanding game off the bench from freshman Emani Washington (Indianapolis, Ind.) who finished with 17 points, seven rebounds and four assists.

Freshman Delora Pricop (Brasov, Romania) finished her night with 16 points, seven rebounds and three steals, while fellow freshman Ahmya Thomas (Phoenix, Ariz.) again filled the box score with 14 points, seven rebounds, four assists and four steals.

Freshman Iris Varela (Augusti, Spain) was the fourth VU scorer in double figures Tuesday night, just missing out on a double-double with 12 points and nine rebounds.

Sophomore Marta Chico (Chabas, Spain) also had a good all-around game for the Lady Blazers, finishing her night with nine points, five rebounds, four assists and three steals.

“I was very pleased with Emani, since Netala went out she stepped in and was able to still do her job and compete,” Hartsfield added. “She showed great numbers tonight. I was very glad about Iris tonight. It was just her third game and she’s coming around. Delora has been in double figures the last three games, so I’ve also very pleased with her performance. And then Ahmya, she’s just our energy bunny out there. She gets the defense going, gets the steals and helps keep us going.”

The Lady Blazers will face their toughest test yet this season in their next game when Vincennes heads to Poplar Bluff, Mo. Saturday, Nov. 23 to face off against No. 7 ranked Three Rivers Community College.

Tip-off time for your Lady Trailblazers Saturday will be 4 p.m. eastern.

“I told the team that tonight is a good game to prepare for what’s coming up Saturday,” Hartsfield. “Just looking to work on the things that we are lacking. Work on boxing out, work on rebounding and work on defense. The things that will help us get ready for Saturday. Of course, all of that plus executing the offense will be big for us. You just never know, we’re taking it one day at a time and one game at a time. I do believe that if we limit our turnovers and execute the game plan and play defense, we can do anything. I believe in the girls and I believe that they have heart, it will just all come down to execution Saturday.”

UE returns home for next two games

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Converting 70% of their field goal attempts in the second half, Ohio State defeated the University of Evansville men’s basketball team by a final score of 80-30 on Tuesday at Value City Arena.

“I was really proud of the group for their effort in the first half, but a game is 40 minutes.  We need to keep that intensity up until the final horn,” UE head men’s basketball coach David Ragland said.  “Ohio State is an excellent offensive team and we had them feeling uncomfortable in the first half.  That was because of our efforts.  We just need to keep that level of intensity for the entire 40 minutes.”

Gabriel Pozzato led the Purple Aces with eight points while Michael Day finished the evening with seven.  Three Buckeyes reached double figures with Devin Royal scoring 20 points while grabbing a game-high 12 boards.  It was the first time the Aces did not have a double-digit scorer since Feb. 23, 2022 at Loyola.

Defense was the name of the game in the first half as Ohio State shot 29.2% while the Purple Aces completed the opening 20 minutes hitting 12.9% of their attempts.  Michael Day knocked down an early 3-pointer to give Evansville its first lead of the game at 5-2.  After the Buckeyes tied it up, Tayshawn Comer hit a shot to make it an 8-5 game at the 13:35 mark.

Evansville’s defense held OSU to just one field goal make in its first nine attempts and a 2-for-12 start overall.  The Buckeyes slowly made their way back, tying things up at 9-9 before taking an 11-9 lead.  The Aces continued to fight back as Josh Hughes converted from downtown to knot the game at 12-12 inside of the 7-minute mark.

After Ohio State jumped back in front at 16-14, their defense clamped down even more to complete the first half.  The Buckeyes scored the final 12 points to take a 28-14 advantage at the break.

Comer hit Evansville’s first field goal of the second half as the Aces worked to remain within shouting distance, but the Buckeyes proved to be too much.  Their largest lead was the final score as they took the game by a final of 80-30.  The scoring output for the Aces was the fewest since the team scored 23 against Kentucky Wesleyan on Feb. 9, 1963 before the institution of the shot clock.

As a team, UE shot 19.0% for the game while the Buckeyes finished at 51.9%.  OSU wrapped up the game with a 48-28 lead on the glass. UE is back home for its next two games beginning on Friday against Green Bay.

BURTON SWORN IN AS INDIANA HOUSE DISTRICT 77 REPRESENTATIVE

On Nov. 19, State Rep. Alex Burton (D-Evansville) was sworn into the Indiana House of Representatives. A former Evansville City Councilman, Burton is a seasoned community advocate for neighborhood revitalization, equity, food access, youth development and housing.

Burton released the following statement regarding today’s swearing-in ceremony:

“As a newly sworn-in state representative, I want families in Evansville and throughout Indiana to know that they have a champion at the table. Too many Hoosier families are struggling to get by, and our focus in the legislature ought to be about making life better for everyone, not further dividing our communities with hot-button issues that have little impact on their lives. From increasing access to safe, quality and affordable housing to creating pathways to better career opportunities and higher wages, we have our work cut out for us in the state legislature, and I’m ready to get to work.

“I look forward to collaborating with my colleagues in the Indiana House Democratic Caucus as well as lawmakers across the aisle to make Indiana a more prosperous, inviting state for all. It is an honor to serve House District 77 and an honor to be joined by my family today as I begin my new role.”

4th Annual Used Cooking Oil Recycling Day Saturday, November 30

4th Annual Used Cooking Oil Recycling Day Saturday, November 30
Holiday cooking can produce a lot of fats, oils and grease known as FOG. Getting rid of large amounts of FOG can be a problem. Never pour FOG down the drain or flush it down the toilet. That can clog the plumbing inside your home and lead to backups in our sewer system. And dumping FOG on the ground is bad for the environment. Instead, bring your used cooking oil to the 4th Annual Used Cooking Oil Recycling Day.  This year, Evansville Water and Sewer Utility (EWSU) will partner with American Grease and Septic and the City Engineer’s Office to accept used cooking oil from residential customers. The goal is to dispose of FOG properly to protect customers’ pipes and our City’s sewers.
Used Cooking Oil Recycling Day
When: Saturday, November 30
Time:  8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
Where: Sunrise Pump Station, 1200 Riverside Drive
“When residents participate in handling their used grease responsibly, not only do they keep it from causing expensive sewer overflows,” said Chris Musack, president of American Grease and Septic, “they are contributing to a true recycling process that supports our transportation and commerce industry. This used grease is fuel that keeps our trucks on the roads and our stores stocked.”
A grease waste station will be set up in the parking lot between Sunrise Pump Station and the new skatepark to collect the used oils. The entrance to the parking lot is located across from Shawnee Drive at Veterans Memorial Parkway.(See map below) Only used cooking oils and grease will be accepted, such as canola oil, corn oil, lard, olive oil, peanut oil, sesame oil, sunflower oil, vegetable oil, and meat drippings. Petroleum oil waste will not be permitted.
This is a free service for EWSU residential city and county customers only. To learn more about fats, oils and grease prevention, visit ewsu.com/FOG.
