 Those who wish to pursue a teaching career can now apply for the Next Generation Hoosier Educators Scholarship. Designed to help high-achieving students passionate about education keep their college costs down and share their talents in Hoosier schools, the scholarship is awarded to 200 students across the state that commit to teaching in Indiana for five consecutive years upon graduation. Recipients will receive up to $7,500 per year of college for up to four years.          Learn more.

Those interested in serving as an Indiana State Trooper are encouraged to apply for the 80th Indiana State Police Recruit Academy. As a mother preparing my children for college, I know firsthand how important financial aid is to help students go to school. Students and parents interested in learning about financial aid opportunities should attend a meeting with INvestEd at 6:30 p.m. on Sept. 12 at New Tech High School. INvestEd will present information on the types of financial aid available including aid from federal and state governments, as well as institutions.  You can also learn about key sections of the Free Application for Federal Student Aid form, which is the starting point to financial assistance for all students.
For over 35 years, the goal of INvestEd has been to provide students with solutions to put higher education within reach. Providing affordable choices to Hoosier students before college is the best way to limit excessive debt after college.

Applications are now open for the Indiana Senate Republican Caucus internship program for the 2020 legislative session, which include opportunities for interns to serve in the Senate Majority Communications Office as a press secretary or multimedia intern.

Press secretary interns work alongside their assigned press secretary and respond to all of the media needs of their Senators.The responsibilities of this role include:

STATE SENATOR TOMES RIDES ALONG WITH VANDERBURGH COUNTY SHERIFF’S DEPARTMENT

“It was an honor to ride along with Deputy Bush and Archie,” Tomes said. “As a legislator, it is important to know what our local law enforcement needs on a training and tactical level to combat crime. I was able to take part in a few stops Friday evening and witnessed firsthand our local law enforcement in action, and I commend the Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s Department for their work to keep our communities safe.”

Reps. Bucshon and Carson Introduce Legislation to Advance Efforts to Address Preventable Maternal Mortality ( from Sept 5, 2019 Press Release)
 U.S. Representatives Larry Bucshon, M.D. (IN-08) and André Carson (IN -07) introduced the Excellence in Maternal Health Act (H.R. 4215) to authorize the Department of Health and Human Services to establish grant programs to develop and disseminate best practices to improve maternal health care quality, training, and education in order to reduce preventable maternal mortality.
“As a physician and a father of four, I understand the importance of ensuring the health of mothers during pregnancy and after the delivery of newborns,” said Dr. Bucshon. “This is a critical time for both the mother and the child as a new life is brought into the world. We must do better in our approach across the entire nation, especially in rural America, to use best practices and provide necessary resources to stop preventable maternal mortality which is why I have introduced the Excellence in Maternal Health Act. I believe this bipartisan legislation will benefit patients and communities that are currently struggling.”

President Donald J. Trump Has Dedicated His Administration to Fighting Back Against the Opioid Crisis (from Sept. 5, 2019 Press Release)
The President announced $1.8 billion in new grants to help States fight the opioid crisis and to help prevent more American lives from being lost to overdose. These grants include more than $900 million in grants for States and territories to address the opioid crisis in their communities. An additional $900 million will be awarded through the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for research into overdose treatment and improving overdose data.

Indiana to Receive More Than $18 Million to Combat Opioid Epidemic (from Sept. 4, 2019 Press Release)
U.S. Senators Todd Young (R-Ind.) and Mike Braun (R-Ind.)  applauded the announcement by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) that Indiana will receive $18,147,223 in grant funding to help address the opioid crisis.

“As I travel across Indiana it is clear that no community has been spared from the harmful impacts of opioids,” said Senator Young.“Today’s announcement is welcome news for Indiana as we fight to curb this devasting opioid epidemic. More funding will allow more access to prevention services and treatment options for countless Hoosiers struggling with opioid addiction across our state.”

“$18 million is significant funding to curb the opioid epidemic and it will make measurable movement towards fixing this crisis,” said Senator Braun. “In addition to these valuable funds, I have offered bipartisan solutions that address the opioid crisis plaguing Hoosier families and communities.”

University of Southern Indiana Men’s Golf Finish 13th Of 17 Teams At the Murray State Invitational

EVANSVILLE, Ind.- University of Southern Indiana Men’s Golf shot a final round of 304 to finish 13th of 17 teams at the Murray State Invitational in Murray, Kentucky Tuesday.

The Screaming Eagles finished the first two rounds of the season with a 300 and 299 respectively. This gave USI a 54-hole cumulative score of 903.

Sophomore Zach Williams (Mount Vernon, Illinois) finished T-20 in the 95-player field leading the way for the Eagles after carding a three-over-par 73 in the final round. He opened the weekend with a one-under-par 70 Sunday and another 73 Monday. Williams finished with a three-day total of 216 (+3).

Senior teammate K.O. Taylor (Madisonville, Kentucky) finished 55th with a 54-hole mark of 226 (+13) with his low round of the tournament coming on Monday’s four-over-par 74.

Murray State (830/-22) UT – Martin (834/-18) Southern Illinois (836/-16) nabbed the top three spots while Southern Illinois (B) (869/+17) and Tennessee State U. (871/+19) rounded out the top five.

USI will look ahead to their next tournament, the Doc Spragg Fall Invitational held in Findlay, Ohio on Sep. 23-24.

USI hosts McKendree to kick-off GLVC campaign

The University of Southern Indiana women’s soccer team begins the defense of its share of the 2018 GLVC regular season title Sunday when it hosts McKendree University at Strassweg Field. Match time is scheduled for noon and coverage can be found on GoUSIEagles.com.

This Sunday’s USI men’s and women’s soccer games will be played in honor of Oliver “Ollie” Dill, a child of the USI Family who tragically lost his life this past summer. All ticket proceeds will be donated to a selected charity in Ollie’s name.

USI’s first homestand of the season extends through September 20 when the University of Indianapolis visits Strassweg Field for a 5 p.m. match-up.

Week 1 Eagle Notes: 

The 2018 Crown: The Eagles and the Bearcats of McKendree shared the 2018 GLVC regular season crown with Truman State University at the end of last season. The share of the GLVC regular season title was a first in program history for USI.

USI starts 2019 with two wins: USI won its opening games of the season, posting a 5-0 win over Purdue University Northwest at home and a 4-0 victory on the road at Walsh University.

Unbeaten Streak Extended: USI extended its unbeaten streak to 10 matches after starting the year with a pair of wins. The Eagles finished last season with seven-straight wins, tying a school record, and a tie in the GLVC Tournament with Rockhurst University (Rockhurst advanced over USI in the GLVC Tournament due to penalty kicks).

Winter named GLVC Player of the Week: USI junior forward Maggie Winter was named the GLVC Offensive Player of the Week after leading the team with seven points in two matches on three goals and one assist. Winter had a goal in the win over Purdue Northwest and a pair of goals and an assist in the victory at Walsh.

Climbing the record book: Junior forward Maggie Winter is starting to climb the USI record book categories, moving into the top 10 in points (37) and remaining 11th in goals scored (14), one away from entering the top 10.

Schoenstein enters his 4th year: USI Head Coach Eric Schoenstein is in his fourth season as the head coach of the Eagles, producing a 31-19-7 mark (.605), a share of a GLVC regular season title, and three-straight GLVC Tournament appearances.

USI vs. McKendree: McKendree leads the all-time series, 9-5-1, after winning the regular season match last fall, 2-1, in double overtime. The Bearcats also have won the last five regular season meetings.

McKendree in 2019:  The Bearcats split their opening weekend at home, defeating Kentucky Wesleyan College, 3-2, and falling to Ohio Dominican University, 1-0.

USI vs. Indianapolis: The Greyhounds lead the all-time series with the Eagles, 12-11-1, despite USI winning on the road last year in overtime, 3-2. The Eagles and the Greyhounds have split the last five games with two wins each and a tie.

UIndy in 2019:  UIndy, who host Bellarmine University Sunday before visiting USI on September 20, won its first two matches in convincing fashion. The Greyhounds defeated the University of Wisconsin Parkside, 4-1, and Purdue Northwest, 4-0, on the road during the opening weekend.

Rohleder Powers Aces at Murray State Invitational

 The University of Evansville men’s golf team started the fall season off strong at day one of the Murray State Invitational, Monday in Murray, Ky.

After 36 holes, the Purple Aces sit tied in fourth place, carding a 6-over par 574.

Issac Rohleder, in his first tournament as an Ace, sits tied for 15th, posting a 1-under par 141, including a 69 round one.

Matthew Ladd earned a 1-over par 143 through two rounds, siting tied for 23rd. Dallas Koth finds himself in a tie for 34th with a 4-over par score.

Spencer Wagner and Caleb Wassmer round out UE’s lineup, currently sitting tied for 43rd and 66th respectively.

The Aces are set for a 9 a.m. shotgun start for the final round Murray State Invitational tomorrow.

Aces close road trip with journey to Lipscomb

  • After falling behind early, the University of Evansville men’s soccer team mounted a vigorous comeback that fell just short in a 4-3 loss on the road at SIUE on Friday night.
  • The Aces found themselves in a hole inside the first 10 minutes of the match after the Cougars pounced early. SIUE opened the scoring in the second minutes as the leading goal-scorer for the Cougars a season ago scored his first of 2018 in the beginning moments of the match.
  • Three minutes later, the Cougars added a second goal off the foot of Jorge Gonzalez, followed by another goal two minutes later.
  • Before the half, SIUE scored its fourth of the opening 45 minutes as Vncent Jackson II found the back of the net.
  • With nine minutes left in the opening period, Evansville pulled back within three goals as sophomore Ryan Harris scorched one past the keeper in the 36th minute off an assist from redshirt freshman Jakub Hall.
  • In the 66th minute, Evansville trimmed its deficit to two as freshman Nkosi Graham scored his first goal of his college career.
  • As the match moved into the final 10 minutes, junior Filip Johansson gave the Aces a boost with his first goal of the season, assisted by sophomore Logan Muck, bringing Evansville back within a goal.
  • Despite pushing forward and substituting in attacking players, Evansville could not find the match-tying goal as the Aces fell to SIUE, 4-3.
  • Evansville owned a significant advantage on shots on-goal, out-shooting the Cougars, 12-6.
