EPA Requests Applications for Grants to Help Reduce Diesel Emissions from School Buses

0

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is announcing the availability of approximately $10 million in rebates to public school bus fleet owners to help them replace older school buses. Upgrading buses with older engines reduces diesel emissions and improves air quality. Tomorrow marks the start of Children’s Health Month, and today’s announcement is an important part of the agency’s commitment to protecting children’s health and their future.

“Children’s health is a top priority for EPA, and these grants will help provide cleaner air and a safer, more reliable ride to and from school for America’s children,” said EPA Administrator Andrew Wheeler. “This DERA funding reflects our broader children’s health agenda and commitment to ensure all children can live, learn, and play in healthy and clean environments.”

EPA standards for new diesel engines can make them more than 90% cleaner than older ones, but many older diesel engines still in operation predate these standards. Older diesel engines emit large quantities of pollutants such as particulate matter (PM) and nitrogen oxides (NOx), which have been linked to serious health problems such as aggravated asthma and lung damage.

EPA will accept applications from Monday, Sept. 30, 2019, to Wednesday, Oct. 30, 2019.

This is the seventh rebate program to fund cleaner school buses offered under Diesel Emission Reduction Act (DERA) appropriations. Nearly 30,000 buses across the country have already been made cleaner as a result of DERA funding.

Eagles sweep GLVC Runner of the Week awards

0

University of Southern Indiana senior Austin Nolan (Evansville, Indiana) and junior Jennifer Comastri (Indianapolis, Indiana) have been named the Great Lakes Valley Conference Runners of the Week for men’s and women’s cross country, respectively.

Nolan finished third out of 110 competitors this past weekend at the Trevecca Division II Showcase Invitational with an eight-kilometer time of 25 minutes, 2.90 seconds. His effort, which included a late surge from fourth to third, helped the No. 8 Screaming Eagles to a one-point win over No. 16 Lee University as well as a four-point win over No. 20 University of Charleston. The University of Colorado-Colorado Springs, ranked No. 10 in the nation, finished eight points behind the Eagles in fourth place.

A two-time defending GLVC champion, GLVC Runner of the Year and GLVC Scholar Athlete of the Year, Nolan is collecting his third Runner of the Week laurel after earning the award twice a year ago.

Comastri blazed her way to a second-place finish out of 83 runners at the Trevecca Division II Showcase Invitational. Her 5k time of 17:41.20 was less than five seconds off the winning pace and helped the No. 12 Eagles secure a second-place finish in what turned out to be a two-horse race between USI and No. 10 Lee University.

A two-time All-GLVC honoree, Comastri is earning GLVC Runner of the Week honors for the first time in her career. She is the first USI women’s runner to collect the honor since Hope Jones (Cumberland, Indiana) was named GLVC Runner of the Week in September of 2017.

USI returns to action October 12 when the Eagles compete at the Lewis University Crossover in Romeoville, Illinois. The Eagles host the Great Lakes Valley Conference Championships October 26 as well as the NCAA II Midwest Region Championships November 9 at Angel Mounds.
