“IS IT TRUE” July 8, 2019

4

We hope that today’s “IS IT TRUE” will provoke honest and open dialogue concerning issues that we, as responsible citizens of this community, need to address in a rational and responsible way?

IS IT TRUE that the forthcoming book which will be called “IS IT TRUE” with a tagline not yet determined with have topical chapters with appropriate subjects from the 15 years of “IS IT TRUE” articles published by the CCO?…some of the chapter topics that are under consideration at this time are The McCurdy, The Executive Inn Dilemma, The Earthcare Energy Awakening, $20 Million Ball Fields, Groveling for a Downtown Hotel, How to Mess up at a Smoking Ban, The Deceptive Campaign for a Downtown Arena, Rising Crime in River City, The Price of Neglecting Infrastructure and An Obsession with Fun and Games?…there will also be a chapter on the money that the CCO helped save the citizens of Evansville over $100 million by diligently and continually pointing out the damages that would be done by repealing the Homestead Tax Credit, the deficit spending practices of local politicians, opposing Vectren’s rate increase, and questioning the cost of a number of fun and games projects?…there will be a special section for some insanely stupid things that people of power have done such as the wasteful antics of the Evansville DMD and the Redevelopment Commission, the Smart Water Meter project and of course “How to Kill a Successful Hockey Team”?

IS IT TRUE that three well known Republicans are spearheading an upcoming political fundraising event to raise funds for 2019 Republican City Council candidates? …we been told that so far they have raised $60,000 for the August 9, 3019 political Gala to be held at th ehe Dream Car Museum? …we are also told that these individuals are expecting to raise around $150,000 from this event? …that Governor Holcomb, Lt. Governor Crouch, United Senators Young and Braun and Mayor Winnecke are expected to attend this event?  …some of the key people spearheading this big ticket political fundraising event are none other than Steve Hammer, Deputy Mayor Steve Schaefer and former local GOP Secretary Hobart Scales?  …aren’t these the same individuals that local GOP party boss Wayne Parke determined that they shouldn’t continue to hold an offiical position within the Republican Party of Vanderburgh County?

IS IT TRUE that Mole #132 who is deeply embedded in the State of Kentucky happenings tells us that there may be a class action lawsuit filed against the casino operators in Kentucky for mis-stateing the functions of gaming machines called instant ‘Historical Horse Racing” machines?…the Family Foundation of Kentucky has an eye on all things in the state that disrupt families and their interest in one-armed-bandits seems to be peaking?

IS IT TRUE we wonder why Vanderburgh County doesn’t have their own Human Resource Department?

IS IT TRUE the “Demand Table” for the newly renovated jail are: 500 beds will meet our needs for the next 10 years?  …that a 600 beds jail will meet our needs for the next 15 years?  …that a 750-bed jail will meet our needs for the next 20 years?

IS IT TRUE we hope that the powers that be will agree on a new jail design that will be meet the future needs of the Vanderburgh County Sheriff Office for the next 20 years by building a 750-bed addition because it makes sound economic sense?

IS IT TRUE we wonder why should the Evansville Water And Sewer Department be responsible for paying the Computer Information Technology work done at city departments?  …we also wonder who is paying for the Computer Information Technology costs at all of the Vanderburgh County departments?  …that this could be a good question for Mayoral and City Council candidates to ask during this election?

IS IT TRUE the article that we posted recently about members of the Teamsters local 215 went on strike against a regional concrete company went viral?  …we are told that this strike has been expanded to other cities?

IS IT TRUE last month a land drilling company from Indy were seen taking core samples from the parking lot of the vacant IGA Grocery store on North Main Street? …if you don’t believe this statement please visit the vacant IGA Grocery store on North Main Street and see for yourself?…we are told if any announcement is made concerning the future development of  this property it will be political timed?  ..we guarantee that this is a developing story?

IS IT TRUE the number one cause for a divorce is marriage?

Todays“Readers Poll” question is:The most effective Chief of Staff or Deputy Mayor of Evansville?

Commentary: Whatever You Do, Don’t Listen

Commentary: Whatever You Do, Don’t Listen

By John Krull
TheStatehouseFile.com

INDIANAPOLIS – The Indiana Republican Party is very upset with Indiana Superintendent of Public Instruction Jennifer McCormick.

Who also happens to be a Republican.

McCormick agreed to be part of a listening tour with Indiana Sen. Eddie Melton, D-Gary. Melton is sizing up a 2020 run for governor.

John Krull, publisher, TheStatehouseFile.com

The news that McCormick would be traveling around the state listening to Hoosiers set Indiana GOP Chair Kyle Hupfer’s teapot to full boil.

“After being on stage at our Republican Conventions in 2016 and 2018, running on GOP ideals in 2016 and accepting campaign aid from thousands of Republican Party supporters across the state, it begs the question whether Jennifer McCormick is still a Republican,” he said in a press release. “I’m sure someone will ask her that soon.”

Hupfer also accused McCormick of auditioning to be the Democratic Party’s lieutenant-gubernatorial nominee next year.

McCormick’s response was little more than a scoff.

“I expect that at the federal level, just because of the political allegiance games being played,” McCormick said of Hupfer’s fulminations. “At the state level, it’s disappointing. I think we have to do better than that. For me, it’s not about a political party. It’s about kids.”

To be fair to Hupfer, he may have been angry about something other than McCormick sharing a stage with a Democrat.

He also might be hot and bothered about the fact that she plans to listen to people.

When it comes to education, listening is not something Hoosier Republicans like to do.

To their eyes – and ears – listening isn’t just bad.

It’s dangerous.

Listening might encourage Hoosiers to start questioning.

They might start asking why an Indiana education reform movement that began as a quest to increase accountability in schools now has been transformed into a therapeutic campaign to make parents feel better about how their children are doing in the classroom, regardless of what the scores may say. It’s a kind of new entitlement.

Normally, Republicans aren’t thrilled with entitlements, but in this case they’re okay with the idea.

If the listening continues, Hoosiers also might inquire about why, as taxpayers, they now are paying for not one but two systems of public education. One provides funding for the traditional public schools, which must educate every child who walks through the school doors and must comply with all laws banning discrimination.

The other, though, uses parents to launder tax money through vouchers and funnels millions of dollars to schools such as Roncalli and Cathedral, which fire people for having legally sanctioned marriages. This makes taxpayers party to discrimination.

Last, but perhaps most damaging, this listening tour on which McCormick will embark might encourage Indiana’s citizens to start asking when the GOP’s grand education strategy will start working.

Republicans have guided the state’s education policies for nearly 15 years now. At the beginning of their crusade to dismantle traditional public schools, they promised to bring about stunning increases in student achievement.

It hasn’t happened.

Hoosier test scores and other standards of measurement at most have remained static. About the best that can be said of Indiana student progress is that we haven’t lost ground as fast as some other states struck by the market-driven education-reform fever.

At some level, Indiana Republicans may grasp this. That’s why they have worked so hard to remove charter and voucher schools from many of the accountability standards and processes imposed on traditional public schools.

Accountability, for the GOP, is essential for traditional public schools.

For other schools that receive massive amounts of state aid, not so much.

It’s also why, in the name of empowering parents, they stripped those same parents of the right to vote for the state’s top educator by making the superintendent of public instruction an appointed rather than elected position.

You see, an elected superintendent such as McCormick might do something dangerous.

Such as listening to people.

And that would be bad.

UnRepublican, even.

State Could Run Up More Legal Fees After Losing Abortion Case

State Could Run Up More Legal Fees After Losing Abortion Case

By Victoria Ratliff
TheStatehouseFile.com

INDIANAPOLIS—Attorney General Curtis Hill said he expects to appeal the state’s latest loss after a federal court judge ruled that Indiana’s newest abortion law is unconstitutional.

Hill said Tuesday in a written statement that his office is reviewing the ruling issued late Friday by Senior U.S. District Court Judge Sarah Evans Barker that blocked the abortion law passed in the 2019 legislative session.

The ruling is one in a string of losses in federal court for the attorney general’s office and it could lead to the state paying out more money in legal fees to the ACLU of Indiana, which represented the plaintiffs. The state’s Legislative Services Agency has noted in the past that the state has paid out about $290,000 in legal fees to plaintiffs and their lawyers.

In April 2019, Gov. Eric Holcomb signed House Enrolled Act 1211 into law that would ban a certain type of second trimester abortion called D&E—dilation and evacuation. D&E is the most common second trimester abortion method.

The law, which would have made performing that type of abortion a Level 5 felony, was supposed to take effect July 1. The ACLU along with Dr. Caitlin Bernard, one of two doctors in Indiana who offer the D&E procedures, filed a lawsuit in late April. The other physician who does the procedure is Dr. Hua Meng.

Barker, who was originally appointed to the federal bench by President Ronald Reagan, found that the ban on D&E abortions “imposes an ‘undue burden’ on a woman’s right to decide to have an abortion,” and limits a doctor’s ability to fully judge what the patient needs.

Bernard said in a written statement released by the ACLU that the law made it impossible for her to fully do her job, and that doctors must be able to use their best judgment without government interference.

“I am relieved that I can continue providing the best care for patients without risking prosecution,” she said.

ACLU of Indiana’s legal director and attorney for the case, Ken Falk, also said in the press release that he wasn’t surprise that the legislation was blocked.

“HEA 1211 would undoubtedly interfere with a woman’s access to abortion. This law is clearly unconstitutional,” he said.

Rep. Peggy Mayfield, R-Martinsville and author of the law, issued a statement saying she is disappointed in the ruling and will support Hill if he decides to appeal. She noted that a section of the law requiring additional reporting when there are complications from an abortion has gone into effect.

The state, in defending the law, argued that allowing the D&E procedure devalues human life. But Barker rejected that claim.

“Absent from Defendants’ submissions is any evidence that the provision of D&E in Indiana by physicians like Dr. Bernard and Dr. Meng has in any way coarsened or cheapened the attitudes of Hoosiers towards human life,” she said in the opinion.

Most of all, Barker found that the new law would severely limit women’s access to safe abortions during the second trimester.

She said alternatives to the D&E procedure “subject women to increased risk of physical, psychological, and economic harm for no medical benefit,” and that “they variously increase the cost of the procedure, the duration and pain of the procedure, the medical risks of the procedure, or all three.”

Barker, in striking down the law, said it requires alternatives that are medically riskier, more costly, less reliable, and in some instances simply unavailable, “while accomplishing little more than expressing hostility towards the constitutionally fundamental right of women to control their own reproductive lives as established in Roe.”

The state’s appeal would be filed with the 7thU.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.

The Evansville Ordnance Plant made 96 percent of all .45-caliber ammunition used in the war, while the Republic Aviation Plant produced more than 6,500 P-47 Thunderbolts—almost half of all P-47s built during the war. At its peak, the local shipyard employed upward of eighteen thousand men and women who forged 167 of the iconic Landing Ship Tank vessels. (from Evansville in World War II by James Lachlan Macleod.)
The Evansville Wartime Museum is dedicated to showing and celebrating the stories of those who were a part of this WWII history with the memorabilia they collect.

“LEFT JAB AND RIGHT JAB” JUNE 8, 2018

18

“LEFT JAB AND RIGHT JAB”

“Right Jab And Left Jab” was created because we have two commenters that post on a daily basis either in our “IS IT TRUE” or “Readers Forum” columns concerning National or International issues.
Joe Biden and Ronald Reagan’s comments are mostly about issues of national interest.  The majority of our “IS IT TRUE” columns are about local or state issues, so we have decided to give Mr. Biden and Mr. Reagan exclusive access to our newly created “LEFT JAB and RIGHT JAB”  column. They now have this post to exclusively discuss national or world issues that they feel passionate about.
We shall be posting the “LEFT JAB” AND “RIGHT JAB” several times a week.  Oh, “Left Jab” is a liberal view and the “Right Jab is representative of the more conservative views. Also, any reader who would like to react to the written comments of the two gentlemen is free to do so.

Otters comeback falls short, Rascals even series

0
Despite scoring a total of four runs in the seventh and eighth innings, the Evansville Otters could not muster enough runs in their comeback bid against the River City Rascals Saturday, losing by a score of 6-4.

Offensively, the Rascals’ attack was spread out in a concise manner throughout the game.

Zach Lavy recorded an RBI groundout to first base to give the Rascals a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second.

In the bottom of the third, Otters starter Anthony Arias issued a bases-loaded walk to Braxton Martinez to extend the Rascals lead to two.

A sac fly from Nolan Meadows gave the Rascals a 3-0 lead after three.

Arias handed the ball to the bullpen in the bottom of the fourth following a hits batsman.

The left-hander, who made his first start since his college career, earned the loss allowing three runs on one hit in three innings pitched.

Chris Cepeda came in and allowed one hit, getting the Otters out of the fourth inning.

The Rascals tacked on two runs in the next two innings as Lavy hit a sac fly in the fifth, and Braxton Martinez did the same in the sixth, extending the Rascals lead to five.

Rascals starter Travis McQueen was strong on the mound through six innings, shutting out the Otters and allowing three hits, but the Otters got to him in the seventh inning.

Carlos Castro extended his hitting streak to 14 games after hitting a two-run home run in the seventh off McQueen, giving the Otters life cutting the deficit down to three at 5-2.

McQueen trotted out to the mound in the eighth inning but issued a walk to Hunter Cullen, and he was pulled following the walk.

Yeison Medina came on in relief and allowed a double to J.J. Gould to start his outing, putting runners on second and third with no outs for the Otters.

Medina allowed back-to-back RBI groundouts to David Cronin and Keith Grieshaber to make the score 6-4 after eight.

One of those two runs was credited to McQueen, who finished with seven innings, allowing three runs on six hits with one walk and six strikeouts.

The Otters had a leadoff base runner to start the top of the ninth as Jack Meggs reached on an error by Rascals shortstop Andrew Penner, but Jason Zgardowski retired the next three batters he faced, including a long flyout by Hunter Cullen to right field, a foot shy of a game-tying home run.

Zgardowski earned the save, his fourth in 13 games appeared.

Sunday’s rubber match will be at 5:05 p.m. from CarShield Field in O’Fallon, Mo.
