Hoosiers Cap Final Day of World University Games with Three Medals
The Indiana University swimming contingent at the 2019 World University Games wrapped up competition on Wednesday by winning three more medals.
Over the course of the 2019 World University Games, Hoosier swimmers – both current and postgraduate – combined to win seven gold medals, two bronze medals and qualify for 16 Championship Finals.
In the Championship Final of the men’s 4×100 medley relay, both IU postgraduates Ian Finnerty and Zach Apple won gold with Team USA, helping the Americans post a winning time of 3:33.02.
Apple posted a tremendous anchor freestyle leg, brining Team USA back from a 0.53 deficit from Russia. The IU postgrad split a 47.55 in his 100 free leg, 0.57 seconds faster than any other time in the field. Finnerty, the 100 breaststroke champion from earlier in the week, split a 1:00.36 for the Americans.
The swim capped a wonderful performance from Apple at the 2019 World University Games. The former Hoosier won five gold medals over the course of the week – 4×100 freestyle relay, 200 freestyle, 100 freestyle, 4×200 freestyle relay and the 4×100 medley relay.
Also, in the Championship Final of the men’s 50 freestyle, Apple placed sixth overall with a time of 22.50.

A letter from President Rochon to the USI Community
Editor’s note: The following letter was distributed to USI students, faculty, staff and retirees on Tuesday, July 9
As a parent and the president of the University of Southern Indiana, I am deeply saddened to inform you of the tragic death of a young child as a result of being left in a parked car on our campus. We are supporting the work of the Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s Department in their investigation and thank USI Public Safety for their immediate response and that of the wonderful staff of the Children’s Learning Center who provided aid.
The Children’s Learning Center (CLC) will be closed tomorrow, July 10, and we are assessing if it will reopen later in the week. We understand this will be inconvenient for parents who need childcare, but our thoughts right now are in supporting the individuals who are deeply affected by this tragedy and will need some time to process their grief to best support the children in their care. We will provide updates to parents on when the CLC will reopen as soon as possible.
Our deepest condolences go out to the family of this young child. This is a loss no parent should bear. If you have a child in your life, please hug them tight and remember that counseling services are available if you need them.
Sincerely,
Ronald S. Rochon
USI President
