“LEFT JAB AND RIGHT JAB” JULY 14, 2019

17

“LEFT JAB AND RIGHT JAB”

“Right Jab And Left Jab” was created because we have two commenters that post on a daily basis either in our “IS IT TRUE” or “Readers Forum” columns concerning National or International issues.
Joe Biden and Ronald Reagan’s comments are mostly about issues of national interest.  The majority of our “IS IT TRUE” columns are about local or state issues, so we have decided to give Mr. Biden and Mr. Reagan exclusive access to our newly created “LEFT JAB and RIGHT JAB”  column. They now have this post to exclusively discuss national or world issues that they feel passionate about.
We shall be posting the “LEFT JAB” AND “RIGHT JAB” several times a week.  Oh, “Left Jab” is a liberal view and the “Right Jab is representative of the more conservative views. Also, any reader who would like to react to the written comments of the two gentlemen is free to do so.

FOOTNOTE: Any comments posted in this column do not represent the views or opinions of the City-County Observer or our advertisers.

EPA Registers Long-Term Uses of Sulfoxaflor While Ensuring Strong Pollinator Protection

0

Registration provides benefits to growers and is supported by strong science that shows minimal risks for pollinators

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is issuing a long-term approval for the insecticide sulfoxaflor— an effective tool to control challenging pests with fewer environmental impacts. After conducting an extensive risk analysis, including the review of one of the agency’s largest datasets on the effects of a pesticide on bees, EPA is approving the use of sulfoxaflor on alfalfa, corn, cacao, grains (millet, oats), pineapple, sorghum, teff, teosinte, tree plantations, citrus, cotton, cucurbits (squash, cucumbers, watermelons, some gourds), soybeans, and strawberries.

“EPA is providing long-term certainty for U.S. growers to use an important tool to protect crops and avoid potentially significant economic losses, while maintaining strong protection for pollinators,” said Alexandra Dapolito Dunn, assistant administrator for EPA’s Office of Chemical Safety and Pollution Prevention. “Today’s decision shows the agency’s commitment to making decisions that are based on sound science.”

Sulfoxaflor is an important and highly effective tool for growers that targets difficult pests such as sugarcane aphids and tarnished plant bugs, also known as lygus. These pests can damage crops and cause significant economic loss. Additionally, there are few viable alternatives for sulfoxaflor for these pests. In many cases, alternative insecticides may be effective only if applied repeatedly or in a tank mix, whereas sulfoxaflor often requires fewer applications, resulting in less risk to aquatic and terrestrial wildlife.

EPA’s registration also includes updated requirements for product labels, which will include crop-specific restrictions and pollinator protection language.

IDEM issues Air Quality Action Day tomorrow for five Indiana regions

0

The Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM) has issued an Air Quality Action Day and is forecasting high ozone levels for Saturday, July 13, 2019 in the following areas:

  • Central Indiana – Marion, Bartholomew, Boone, Brown, Delaware, Hamilton, Hancock, Hendricks, Johnson, Madison, Monroe, Morgan and Shelby
  • Northwest Indiana – Lake, Porter, LaPorte
  • Southeast Indiana – Clark, Floyd, Harrison, Jackson, Jefferson, Scott and Washington
  • Southwest Indiana – Daviess, Dubois, Gibson, Greene, Knox, Perry, Pike, Posey, Spencer, Vanderburgh and Warrick
  • West Central Indiana – Vigo

IDEM encourages everyone to help reduce ozone by making simple changes to their daily habits. You can:

  • Walk, bike, carpool or use public transportation
  • Avoid using the drive-through and combine errands into one trip
  • Avoid refueling your vehicle or using gasoline-powered lawn equipment until after 7 p.m.
  • Turn off your engine when idling for more than 30 seconds
  • Conserve energy by turning off lights or setting the air conditioner to 75 degrees or above

Anyone sensitive to changes in air quality may be affected when ozone levels are high. Children, the elderly and anyone with heart or lung conditions should reduce or avoid exertion and heavy work outdoors.

IDEM examines weather patterns and current ozone readings to make daily air quality forecasts. To learn more about ozone or sign up for air quality forecasts, visit SmogWatch.IN.gov.

Ground-level ozone is formed when sunlight and hot weather bake vehicle exhaust, factory emissions and gasoline vapors. Ozone in the upper atmosphere blocks ultraviolet radiation, but ozone near the ground is a lung irritant that can cause coughing and breathing difficulties.

About IDEM
IDEM (idem.IN.gov) implements federal and state regulations regarding the environment. Through compliance assistance, incentive programs and educational outreach, the agency encourages and aids businesses and citizens in protecting Hoosiers and our environment.

Obituary for Lucille Grace (Schofield) Hayes

Lucille Grace (Schofield) Hayes, 78, of Evansville, Indiana, passed away Tuesday, July 9, 2019 at Linda E. White Hospice House. Lucille was born October 21, 1940 in Evansville to the late Gilbert and Stella (Norvell) Schofield.
Lucille graduated from Central High School in 1958. Her first “Real” job was at Smith and Butterfield. She also was as an X-Ray technician and worked at Sears Dept. Store in the late 60s through the early 70s (which was her favorite job!). After, she became a real estate agent for HomeHunters and Town & Country Real Estate; which she made, the highest score on the real estate exam, at the time taken. She went on to work for PIP Printing, and then became the owner and operator of The Copy Shop for 10 years. Lucille was a remarkable woman and a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother who was known for her laugh, voice, enthusiasm, and smile. She was loved and a 2nd mom and grandma to many. Late in life she was known only as “Grandma”.
She and her husband, David, were married for almost 60 years on July 23, 1959. They enjoyed listening and singing music together, and they knew “all” of the words! She was thrilled to go to Disney World with her family and also cherished the times she traveled to the Bahamas and Puerto Rico with her husband. She also enjoyed cooking delicious meals, decorating her home, and flowers. She had a great memory and could remember almost every detail of her wonderful childhood and life. Some of her last great memories she was very grateful for were that she was able to see her 3 great grandbabies be born and to hold and love them and see her granddaughter get married.
She truly enjoyed her life, accomplishments, and family. She said that she did not want a funeral but a Celebration of Life!
Lucille is survived by her husband, David Hayes, who was employed by Kreiger and Ragsdale Printing Corporation; daughter, Debbie (Danny) Oldham; son, Daniel Hayes and his former wife, Angela Hayes; grandchildren, Drake (Kaitlyn) Oldham, and Lexie (Zack) Waggoner, and Ben Hayes (Kimber), and Heather Hayes (Jesse); great grandsons, Oak, Hank, and Dallas Oldham; and brother, Carl Schofield.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her son, Thomas Hayes and his longtime girlfriend, Stacy Denton; sisters, Mary Anna Spangler, Thelma Kissel, and Dorothy Patton; and brother, Ralph Schofield.
Friends may visit from 2:00 pm to 8:00 pm Monday, July 15, 2019 at Ziemer Funeral Home East Chapel, 800 S. Hebron Ave., Evansville. Visitation will continue from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm Tuesday, at The Bible Center Cathedral, 5000 First Ave., Evansville. Her Celebration of Life will begin at 2:00 pm at The Cathedral with Drake Oldham officiating.
Burial will be at Park Lawn Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to, St. Jude Children’s Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
