STICKS AND STONES

Special Counsel Robert Mueller testified before Congress on July 24, 2019. During his six hours of testimony before the House Judiciary Committee, the major emphasis shifted from concerns about the outcome of the 2016 presidential election to attempts by foreign countries to influence all of our elections.

Mueller testified that for many years and right up to our next election cycle in 2020 several foreign entities were involving themselves in our democracy. And while Mueller specified only Russia for 2016 he made it clear that we should be aware of other actors. Iran, Israel and even our first cousins the British, among numerous others, have sought to inveigle themselves into our governmental decisions.

We have often been subtlety and sometimes not so subtlety nudged toward or away from war or toward or away from alliances with other countries. The favored techniques in days before the internet were the planting of fake newspaper stories or biased books and movies. Today spy dossiers or misleading memes and tweets over the internet are the preferred methods.

But if the aim of a foreign country is to defame or embarrass a politician it seems silly to dispense dirty secrets or even create false ones when such disclosures and prejudiced articles appear in the newspapers and on television every day. For example, if a country wanted to defame Donald Trump it should just encourage Americans to read The New York Times or watch CNN. And if a foreign entity wished to bring down Hillary Clinton it should republish stories from The National Enquirer or push FOX News. There is no need for foreign attempts to bring down a candidate for public office when we do such a thorough job of that ourselves.

What is even more perplexing is why any foreign country cares about our elections when we care so little about the outcomes ourselves. About 40% of eligible voters do not vote in presidential elections and only about 40% trouble themselves to vote in mid-term national elections. And when it comes to the state, county and city elections most of the voters are those hoping to get jobs from the winners.

The bottom line may be that foreign entities are often more concerned with the outcomes of our elections than we are. Maybe we should learn from them.

Fall Heavy Trash Pick-Up Begins Monday, August 12

There will be changes to Volume and Types of Items & Materials

The Evansville Water & Sewer Utility announces that Heavy Trash Pick-up will begin Monday, August 12, and is scheduled to run through Friday, October 18.  This semi-annual curbside service is available to City residents who pay for trash service with their water bill.  Apartment complexes, mobile home communities and business/commercial customers are not eligible.

The collection schedule, area maps, and included items for pick-up with limits are available on the City’s GIS website –www.evansvillegis.com/trash – by clicking “Heavy Trash Pickup Dates” on the right.  To help keep crews on schedule and prevent heavy trash from sitting out on the curb longer than necessary, the number of days allocated for collection in each specific area has been determined based on the volume of heavy trash set out in the past and the number of days required to collect the trash.

Heavy Trash must be placed where normal weekly trash is collected before 6:00 a.m. on the day collection is scheduled in an area. Heavy trash cannot be put out any earlier than the weekend before the scheduled pick up date.

Items that will be collected:

  • Carpet
    • Must be rolled in sections no longer than 4 ft. and no wider than 2 ft. in diameter

Limit of five (5) rolls of carpet

  • Electronics
    • Stereos, etc.
    • NO Televisions, Computer or Accessories

There will be a limit of FIVE (5) total items from the below list:

  • Furniture
    • Sofas, tables, chairs, mattresses, box springs, dressers, bookcases etc.
  • Appliances
    • Stoves, refrigerators/freezers, washing machines, dryers, water heaters, etc.

(Refrigerants must be removed and tagged by a certified professional)

Electronics

    • Stereos, etc.
    • NO Televisions
    • NO Computers or accessories

Limited construction/building material debris

    • Must be in trash containers, etc. of such size and weight that they can be reasonably lifted by two average adults ( no boxes or plastic bags)
    • NO piles or stacks of Construction/Building materials will be picked up
    • NO Privacy fence sections will be picked up
    • NO concrete blocks, bricks or steel poles

Items that will NOT be collected include:

  • Any trash that Republic Services would pick up as part of its regular residential waste collection contract
  • Piles or stacks of Construction/Building materials
  • Privacy fences of any kind
  • Automobile parts
  • Batteries
  • Tires
  • Hazardous materials
  • Computers or accessories
  • Concrete blocks, bricks or steel poles
  • Televisions
  • Yard Waste

Heavy trash that does not meet these requirements will not be picked up.  If a customer has put their heavy trash out according to the requirements above yet feels they were missed, they can call Republic Services at 812-424-3345 within two days to report a possible missed pick-up.

Note that many items not collected through the City’s heavy trash pick-up can be properly disposed of through programs offered by the Solid Waste District, including Tire Amnesty Days, Electronics Recycling Days and Household Hazardous Waste Day (Tox-Away Day).  Additional information about these programs and upcoming program dates is available in the Solid Waste District’s section of the City Website (www.evansvillegov.org/Index.aspx?page=50) or by calling 812-436-7800.

“Right Jab And Left Jab” was created because we have two commenters that post on a daily basis either in our “IS IT TRUE” or “Readers Forum” columns concerning National or International issues.
Joe Biden and Ronald Reagan’s comments are mostly about issues of national interest.  The majority of our “IS IT TRUE” columns are about local or state issues, so we have decided to give Mr. Biden and Mr. Reagan exclusive access to our newly created “LEFT JAB and RIGHT JAB”  column. They now have this post to exclusively discuss national or world issues that they feel passionate about.
We shall be posting the “LEFT JAB” AND “RIGHT JAB” several times a week.  Oh, “LEFT JAB” is a liberal view and the “RIGHT JAB is representative of the more conservative views. Also, any reader who would like to react to the written comments of the two gentlemen is free to do so.

Phillips’ grand slam highlights Otters’ win

With a three-run lead in the bottom of the fifth, Dakota Phillips launched the first grand slam of the year for the Evansville Otters Saturday as the Otters went on to defeat the Windy City Thunderbolts 8-3 to clinch a series win.

With a crowd of 3,035 at Bosse Field, the Otters were able to continue their offensive firepower from Friday’s game, starting in the first inning.

Ryan Long’s sac fly scored David Cronin to put the Otters in front by one.

In the top of the fourth, the Thunderbolts tied the game at one on an RBI single from Tyler Alamo.

The Otters responded in the bottom of the fourth as Cronin drove a two-RBI double to centerfield, scoring Elijah MacNamee and Hunter Cullen, and giving the Otters a 3-1 lead.

Keith Grieshaber smacked a double to right field, scoring Cronin in the process. He reached third on an error and was called out trying to touch home plate on a close call.

With one out in the bottom of the fifth, Windy City starter Cole Bellair allowed a single to Carlos Castro and walks to Rob Calabrese and Elijah MacNamee. He was then pulled in relief for Blake Hickman.

Phillips stepped to the plate and hit his seventh home run of the season and the Otters first grand slam of 2019, which broke the game open with an 8-1 Otters lead.

Bellair was credited with three of the four runs scored on the grand slam, allowing seven earned runs in 4.1 innings pitched while having four walks and two strikeouts. He was given the loss, dropping his record to 2-4.

Taisei Fukuhara hit an RBI single off Evansville starter Tyler Beardsley in the top of the sixth, but the Otters right-hander was able to exit the game without much harm.

Beardsley tossed six innings, allowing two runs on six hits while throwing five strikeouts. He earned the win, improving to 6-3 on the season.

The Thunderbolts would add another run in the ninth on an RBI double from Omar Obregon, but Drew Beyer was able to finish the ninth with a strikeout to give the Otters the victory.

Otters’ balanced attack leads to shutout win against Thunderbolts

The Evansville Otters utilized a balanced attack in Friday’s 7-0 series-opening win against the Windy City Thunderbolts, getting both explosive offense and a 10-strikeout performance from starter Tyler Vail.

In front of 4,085 fans at Bosse Field Friday, Vail was sensational from the beginning, recording two strikeouts in the first inning.

Offensively, Ryan Long got things started for the Otters in the bottom of the first on an RBI single that scored Keith Grieshaber to give the Otters an early 1-0 lead.

Grieshaber went hitless in Friday’s game, snapping a 19-game hit streak. With a walk on Friday, Grieshaber’s on-base streak was extended to 26 games.

David Cronin’s RBI single in the bottom of the second scored Jack Meggs to make the score 2-0 Otters.

In the third, Long hit his 12th home run of the season on a solo shot to right field, giving the Otters a three-run cushion after three.

The Otters continued the home run parade in the fourth when Rob Calabrese and Cronin hit solo home runs to make the score 5-0 Otters.

Vail cruised along throughout his six innings pitched of four-hit baseball while striking out 10 batters. He earned the win, improving his record to 5-5.

Windy City starter Kenny Mathews muscled through six innings, surrendering five runs on seven hits. He was given the loss, dropping his record to 3-7.

In the bottom of the seventh, Carlos Castro added an RBI double to score Mike Rizzitello. Castro would come around to score on an RBI groundout by Meggs, extending the Otters’ lead to 7-0.

Newly acquired Otter Brandyn Sittinger threw three scoreless innings with six strikeouts to earn the three-inning save.

Game two will be Saturday at 6:45 p.m. from Bosse Field.
