CONSUMER ALERT: Double Check Before You Write A Check
Attorney General Curtis Hill warns Hoosiers to be cautious when donating to relief efforts to help those affected by Hurricane Dorian.
“Hoosiers are generous people,†Attorney General Hill said. “They need to know about potential scams that could ensnare those trying to help victims of Hurricane Dorian. Don’t let scammers stop you from donating, but be sure to research organizations before giving them money. Double check before you write a check.â€
Donors should stay vigilant toward possible fraudulent solicitations made via emails or phone calls. They should be on the lookout for unscrupulous individuals posing as charities. Donate on your terms. Don’t feel you have to agree to donate during a telephone solicitation or by responding to an email. You can politely but firmly end a telephone call, or just not respond to an email solicitation, then research the charity before agreeing to donate. Then, if you’re comfortable giving to the charity, you can contact the charity directly to make the donation. Here are some tips:
- Search online for the cause you care about — like “hurricane relief†or “homeless kids†— plus phrases like “best charity†or “highly rated charity.†Once you find a specific charity you’re considering giving to, search its name plus “complaint,†“review,†“rating,†or “scam.†If you find red flags, it might be best to find another organization.
- Check out the charity’s website. Does it give information about the programs you want to support, or how it uses donations? How much of your donation will go directly to support the programs you care about? If you can’t find detailed information about a charity’s mission and programs, be suspicious.
- Use one of these organizations to help you research charities: BBB Wise Giving Alliance, Charity Navigator, CharityWatch, and GuideStar.
- If you’re considering giving to a crowdfunding effort (for example, through GoFundMe) examine the background and expertise of the individual or group raising money and the exact path of the funds. You may be able to instead donate directly to a local organization in the area affected.
- See what your state’s charity regulator has to say about the charity. In Indiana, it’s the Attorney General’s Office. From another state?  Look it up at nasconet.org.
- Before you donate through an online portal that lets you choose from a list of charities, read the article Donating Through an Online Giving Portal, available at FTC.gov/Charity. It explains how these online giving portals work.
After you’ve donated, always review your bank account and credit card statements closely to make sure you’re only charged the amount you intended to donate. It’s good practice to keep a record of all donations.
As always, consumers who believe they are the victims of scam attempts are asked to report them to the Attorney General’s Consumer Protection Division by calling 1-800-382-5516 or going online at https://www.in.gov/attorneygeneral/2347.htm and clicking the “File a Complaint†box at the bottom of the page.
Volleyball Treks North To Warrior Invitational
University of Southern Indiana Volleyball is on the road for its second of three consecutive tournament-weekends to start the 2019 season this week. The Screaming Eagles will compete in the Warrior Invitational, hosted by Wayne State University, in Detroit.
The Eagles face four matches in two days during their stay; USI battles fellow Great Lakes Valley Conference member, University of Missouri-St. Louis (11:15 a.m.), and Malone University (3:45 p.m.) on Friday; Ursuline College (8 a.m.) and the host, Wayne State (12:30 p.m.), on Saturday. All times listed in Central Daylight Time.
The Road Ahead – The Warrior Invitational
About the Tritons:Â Missouri-St. Louis has opened its 2019 season with its first 4-0 start in over 20 years, sweeping the S&T Tournament last weekend. The Tritons finished the 2018 season 14-15 (7-11 GLVC), tying Missouri University of Science & Technology for ninth in the conference standings.
USI v. UMSL:Â The Eagles hold a four-match advantage over the Tritons with a 22-18 record in the all-time series. The two programs have been deadlocked over the past decade-plus, splitting their last 16 meetings dating back to the start of the 2006 season.
About the Pioneers:Â Malone took one of four matches at the Eckerd College Invitational last weekend, a four-set battle with the host, Eckerd. The Pioneers went 16-16 in 2018, but posted a 12-7 record in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference before falling to the University of Findlay in the opening round of the GMAC championship tournament.
USI v. Malone:Â The Eagles and Pioneers have met only twice, splitting their two meetings. Malone evened the series last season when the Eagles visited the Hall of Fame City Challenge, hosted by the Pioneers.
About the Arrows:Â Ursuline College has stumbled out of the gate with an 0-3 record in 2019 following the Daemen College Tournament last weekend. The Arrows went 12-17 (8-11 GMAC) a year ago, but managed a GMAC championship tournament berth, only to be ousted by Hillsdale College.
USI v. Ursuline:Â Saturday’s meeting will be the first between the Eagles and Arrows. USI went 3-1 against GMAC squads last season (Loss: Malone; Wins: Kentucky Wesleyan College, Ohio Valley University, Ohio Dominican University), while Ursuline fell to GLVC members Missouri S&T and Maryville University in 2018.
About the Warriors:Â Wayne State of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletics Conference hosts the Warrior Invitational holding a 3-1 record so far in 2019. The Warriors notably defeated McKendree University in four sets to open their campaign. In 2018, Wayne State went 15-13 (10-6 GLIAC), though it went 1-4 against GLVC opponents.
USI v. Wayne State:Â The Warriors hold a 3-1 advantage in the all-time series that started back in 2009. All three meetings since the start of the 2011 season have come at the Midwest Region Crossover (Formerly GLVC/GLIAC Crossover), in which every match went at least four sets. USI claimed a 3-1 victory in the most-recent meeting in 2015.
How We Got Here – The Capital Classic
USI returned to Evansville with a 1-2 record from the Capital Classic, including a three-set knockout of the University of Charleston. The Eagles dropped a five-setter to Winona State University to open play Friday, before falling to the host University of Illinois Springfield in three sets on Saturday.
Freshman outside hitter Leah Anderson (Bloomington, Illinois) burst onto the collegiate scene with a 19-kill, 17-dig performance in the loss to Winona. The career-opening double-double led Anderson to finish the weekend with 38 kills, 23 digs and three blocks.
Senior middle hitter Elexis Coleman (Joliet, Illinois) made her presence known at the net, taking home 29 kills, a .431 hitting percentage and 10 blocks from the Classic. The fourth-year starter collected six blocks against Winona State, one shy of the career-high set in her sophomore season.
Freshman right side hitter Katherine Koch (Belleville, Illinois) went stride-for-stride with Coleman at the Classic as she collected 26 kills and six blocks, along with six service aces. Koch opened her first-year campaign with a pair of double-digit performances on the attack, including a 10-1-15 attack line against Charleston.
Junior setter Casey Cepicky (St. Louis, Missouri) and senior outside hitter Lindsey Stose (Elkhart, Indiana) were each one dig shy of double-doubles themselves against Winona State; Cepicky racked up 45 assists on USI’s 52 kills, 11 of which coming at the hand of Stose.

Young & Established have grown out of their current rental space and now needs to raise funds to build their own free-standing Events Center on land they own at 306 Ridgeway street.
Young & Established works with children in need on a one on one basis. Â Young & Establishished are helping them with their education and provide emotional support.
They also help older students with job preparedness. They have a suit program where Men’s Wear has donated several hundred new suits for a young person’s interviews.
Eagles come home to start GLVC play
The University of Southern Indiana men’s soccer team begins the defense of its 2018 GLVC regular season title Sunday when it hosts McKendree University at Strassweg Field. Match time is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. and coverage can be found on GoUSIEagles.com.
This Sunday’s USI men’s and women’s soccer games will be played in honor of Oliver “Ollie” Dill, a child of the USI Family who tragically lost his life this past summer. All ticket proceeds will be donated to a selected charity in Ollie’s name.
USI’s first homestand of the season extends through September 20 when the University of Indianapolis visits Strassweg Field for a 7:30 p.m. match-up.
Week 2 Eagle Notes:Â
Eagles start the year 0-1-1:Â The Eagles started slow in 2019, posting a 2-1 loss at Northern Michigan University and a 3-3 double-overtime tie at Northwood University.
The offense has big day versus Northwood: After scoring a single tally in the loss to NMU, USI found its offensive stride in the 3-3 tie with Northwood, scoring once in the first and rallied to tie the score twice in the second half. Junior forward Graham Miller finished the weekend with a team-high three points on one goal and one assist, while junior defender Justin Raines, sophomore midfielder Ryan Nevins, and sophomore defender Colten Walsh has two points each, all three adding one goal.
USI versus McKendree:Â USI leads the all-time series with McKendree, 7-4-2, after posting a 2-1 road win in 2018. The Eagles have won the last two meetings, but are .500 (2-2-1) against the Bearcats in the last five years.
The Bearcats in 2019:Â McKendree started the year 1-1-0 after losing to nationally-ranked Saginaw Valley State University, 2-0, and defeating Oakland City University, 3-0, on a neutral site in Indianapolis, Indiana.
USI versus UIndy:Â USI leads the all-time series with UIndy, 22-13-0, despite falling to the Greyhouds in 2018, 1-0. The loss was the only conference defeat last year for the Eagles. The Greyhounds have had the upper hand on the Eagles since 2013, winning the last seven meetings, six coming in GLVC regular season action.
The Greyhounds in 2019:Â The Greyhounds were perfect in their first two matches, defeating Oakland City, 4-1, and SVSU, 2-1, in overtime. UIndy hosts Bellarmine Sunday before coming to visit USI next Thursday.
Santoro begins his 11th year: USI Head Coach Mat Santoro has an 88-75-19 overall record at the helm. Santoro has guided the Eagles to a pair of NCAA II Tournament appearances; the 2018 GLVC regular season crown, and five GLVC Tournament appearances during his tenure.
Return to the GLVC Tournament:Â USI is looking for its fifth-straight trip to the GLVC Tournament for the first time since 1979-84 seasons.
GLVC leader in championships:Â USI has 10 GLVC men’s soccer titles since the conference was created in 1979, the most by any program in the league. The Eagles won the conference championships in 1979, 1980, 1981, 1982, 1983, 1984, 1988, 1989, 1990, and 1991.

Lowry Named MVC Athlete of the Week
Starting where she left off a year ago, junior cross country runner Anna Lowry earns Missouri Valley Conference Athlete of the Week for the second time in her career.
Lowey took home the individual 5K title at the North Alabama Cross Country Open. She blazed a 18:02.6 race to take the title in a competitive field, marking her second career individual win. She completed the race 15 seconds faster than a group of Mississippi State and Memphis runners.
Her time sits towards the top of the MVC this season and is a top-15 time in school history.
The Purple Aces have a week off before traveling to Austin Peay Cross Country Festival on Sept. 21.

AG Curtis Hill hosts crime prevention forums in Lake and Tippecanoe counties
Attorney General Curtis Hill today hosted crime prevention forums in Merrillville and Lafayette as part of a listening tour that involves visiting 14 cities across the state of Indiana. The purpose of the tour is to facilitate conversations aimed at developing solutions to residents’ crime-related concerns. Merrillville and Lafayette are the fifth and sixth stops on the listening tour with the next stop planned to take place in Bloomington.
“We are one state, but every area of the state has its own unique set of challenges,†Attorney General Hill said. “Not everyone can make their way to Central Indiana to talk about what they’re seeing in their corner of the state, and that is why we are bringing this forum to these various communities.â€
The Office of the Attorney General will collect feedback at each forum and present findings at the office’s 10th Annual Drug Abuse Symposium on Oct. 29-30.
