Williams leads Eagles at Flyer Intercollegiate

0

The University of Southern Indiana men’s golf team finished 13th of 18 teams on Monday at the Flyer Intercollegiate, hosted by Lewis University.

The Screaming Eagles opened the two-day event with a team round of 309 for seventh of the 18 before a second-day 327 dropped USI to its final result.

Sophomore Zach Williams (Mt. Vernon, Illinois) posted the top two rounds for the Eagles with a 74 (+2) first-round score followed by a 77 (+5) to end the event.

Senior Zach Breault (Bridgeport, Illinois) and junior Nate Caudle (Wayne City, Illinois) each posted a 77 in the first round, tying the second-best individual round for the Eagles, on their way to being second and third, respectively for USI.

USI Men’s Golf heads further west next week for the Midwest Regional at Fox Run, hosted by the University of Missouri-St. Louis. The Eagles will tee-off from Eureka, Missouri on Monday.

Eagles to host GLVC home-opener Friday

0

The University of Southern Indiana volleyball team returns to the Screaming Eagles Arena this weekend for its Great Lakes Valley Conference home-opener.

The Screaming Eagles (7-7, 1-1 GLVC) host Drury University (8-7, 2-0 GLVC) Friday night, followed by GLVC-newcomer Southwest Baptist University (2-12, 0-2 GLVC) Saturday afternoon. Those matches are scheduled for 7 p.m. and 3 p.m. starts, respectively.

Coverage of USI Volleyball can be found at GoUSIEagles.com. Both matches will be streamed on the GLVC Sports Network, at glvcsn.com/usi.

News and Notes

Attack of the Youth: Freshman outside hitter Leah Anderson (Bloomington, Illinois) leads the USI offense with 148 kills through 14 matches, including a 3.36 kills/set rate. Anderson posted her second-highest total of 2019 on Friday with 17 kills against William Jewell College.

A Force at the Net: Senior middle hitter Elexis Coleman (Joliet, Illinois) has amassed a team-high 44 blocks and .350 attack percentage while collecting 108 kills thus far.

The 100 Club: Three USI attackers have climbed over the 100-kill plateau so far in 2019: Anderson (148), senior outside hitter Lindsey Stose (Elkhart, Indiana) (109) and Coleman (108). Freshman right side hitter Katherine Koch (Belleville, Illinois) is in line to be the fourth to reach the century-mark, sitting at 97 kills entering the weekend.

Prepare to be Served: Four Eagles have reached double-digit service aces to this point: Anderson (14), senior libero/outside hitter Mikaila Humphrey (Floyd Knobs, Indiana) (12), freshman libero/defensive specialist Kelsie Vanitvelt (Grand Blanc, Michigan) (12) and Stose (11).

Scouting Report

USI v. Drury: The Eagles hold a 13-5 all-time lead over the Panthers, but have split their last six meetings since the end of the 2011 season.

About the Panthers: Drury enters the weekend having won six of its last seven matches, including a pair of GLVC bouts and a five-set thriller against nationally-ranked No. 18 Northwest Missouri State University.

USI v. SBU: The Eagles and Bearcats have crossed paths just once since 1989, with USI coming out on top of a four-set match during the 2015 season.

About the Bearcats: Southwest Baptist will carry a five-match losing skid to Lebanon, Illinois for a match with McKendree University before visiting the Eagles on Saturday. Both of Southwest Baptist’s victories in 2019 have come against East Central University (OK), who holds a 2-15 record themselves in 2019.

“IS IT TRUE” OCTOBER 2, 2019

0

We hope that today’s “IS IT TRUE” will provoke honest and open dialogue concerning issues that we, as responsible citizens of this community, need to address in a rational and responsible way?

IS IT TRUE that it was announced yesterday that Palm Springs, California will be the location of a new 10,000 seat hockey arena and has been selected to have an American Hockey League affiliate of the Seattle National Hockey League franchise?…the new facility will have two ice sheets and will cost $250 million?…this all sounds familiar to the Ford Center in Evansville but there is one very important difference?…the Palm Springs arena (not yet named) will not be using any taxpayer dollars?…the arena is a partnership between the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians and a private investment group?…the arena will sit on tribal land inside a sovereign nation?…the taxpayers of Palm Springs and California will not be paying for or covering the debt on the facility in any way?…this is how stadiums and arenas should be financed as vital services like fire and police are not made to suffer to cover the payments on a temple to sports?…it would have been so great if Evansville could have done something that did not eventually bleed the taxpayers of $10 million per year for 20 years to pay for a facility that is falling well short of the projections of a former mayor’s hand-picked consultants?
IS IT TRUE that the revolving door of non-profit that is an alter-ego of local government has swung again down at the Evansville Convention and Visitors Bureau?…the latest CEO to pack it up and leave town was hired roughly a year ago to replace Bob Warren?…the CEO prior to Warren was caught up in a political wedge created by a former Mayor  and eventually cashed a large check for being dismissed without justifiable cause?…an interim CEO that is a long term employee has been put into place while a nationwide search is launched to fill this $125,000 per year job?…between CEOs and interim CEOs the Evansville CVB is searching for its 6th  leader in the last 9 years?…with the inability to have continuity comes the challenges associated with bringing meaningful conventions with economic impact to Evansville?  …perhaps the governance structure and dependence on local government are the sources of this problem?
IS IT TRUE we are told that the CVB board will once again hire an out of town search firm to hire a new Executive Director?  …the vote to hire an out of town search firm happened a couple of days ago?
IS IT TRUE there are many local candidates with experience in making Evansville a travel destination, including some who currently work for CVB, who are interested in the job?  …that hiring someone local with experience and credentials wouldn’t require a paid search firm and would not only save the taxpayers money but would show the taxpayers of this community that “Evansville Is For Everyone” when you hire locally?
IS IT TRUE that we are extremely pleased with the way Lieutenant Governor Suzanne Crouch conducts herself?  …her actions make us proud?
IS IT TRUE the CCO is pleased to see that the Evansville Zoo has made some improvements and become worthy of visitation again?…it would be even better if the Mesker Amphitheater would have had an engineered comeback after dying of the same neglect?
IS IT TRUE that shootings have become so prevalent in Evansville that even criminals are afraid to hang out in River City without a gun?…this was pointed out very acutely in the Courier and Press this week when it was reported that a career criminal who was being questioned by police about why he had a handgun in his car seat simply answered “It’s Evansville”?…this clearly meant that the criminal was in fear of being in Evansville and being without a weapon?…that is a sad commentary as the national trend in crime is down but only certain places like South Chicago and Baltimore are seeing crime stats increase?…in all fairness to these places, the crime is quite concentrated in certain parts of town?
IS IT TRUE we give five (5) cheers to Vanderburgh County Commissioner Cheryl Musgrave for being persistent in making the bureaucratic Area Plan zoning ordinances more consumer-friendly?
IS IT TRUE that downtown Evansville got a piece of good news this week when it was announced that the former Old National Bank building located at 420 Main is being sold to an investment group that is planning to do some long-needed maintenance, and some state of the art upgrades?…the 420 building is slated to have both commercial and residential use in its new embodiment?…it would be spectacular to see a new Petroleum Club open on the top two floors and it is highly likely that there is plenty of equipment and a beautiful old bar up there waiting for it to happen?
IS IT TRUE yesterday Mayor Winnecke was on his favorite TV station touting his blight elimination program?  …the rehab project shown on a local TV station was completed over several years ago?  …there is nothing like yesterday’s news?
IS IT TRUE when one is invited to a free lunch what do they order to drink?  …he orders two (2) pricey double cappuccinos on the house? … it’s now been alleged that this person has done this several times before? …we bet when he pays for his own lunch he orders water?  …if you provide us with the name of the cappuccino snub we will buy you a cup of any pricey beverage at Starbucks?
IS IT TRUE we are extremely pleased with the way the employees of the Vanderburgh County Treasurer office serve the taxpayers of this community?
IS IT TRUE that our “Readers Poll” is non-scientific but trendy?
Today’s “Readers Poll” question is: Are you disappointed that the Evansville Convention and Visitors Bureau Board Of Directors has decided to hire an out of town search firm to search for a new Executive Director?
W e are pleased to provide obituaries from area funeral homes at no costs.  We are also pleased to announce that we are now providing news from all the area High Schools. Please scroll down the paper and you shall see a listing of them.

MAYORAL CANDIDATE STEVE ARY RELEASES SPEECH HE MADE AT ROTARY CLUB

0

Good afternoon ladies and gentlemen, and thank you all for being here today, and for inviting us to join you. To the Rotary Club of Evansville, I thank you for this wonderful event and the opportunity to speak with some of the most active and influential members of our city, our businesses, and our community.

As you look around town, you will see that Evansville… is changing. And I applaud Lloyd Winnecke for bringing a new appearance to Evansville. Under Lloyd Winnecke, new buildings are going up. Old buildings are being restored. A new face has been brought to the downtown area, to Haynie’s Corner, and to the Arts District. A new penguin exhibit is coming to Mesker Zoo. And a new Aquatic Center is coming to Garvin Park.

Evansville has essentially been getting a facelift. Our wrinkles are being tucked away, and our features are being highlighted. Our gray hair has been dyed to a darker brown, and our bifocals… to contacts. We have spent hundreds of millions of dollars to change the outward appearance of our city… but we have to understand that when a man or woman gets a facelift… it may change their appearance, but it doesn’t change who they are on the inside.

The initial steps have been taken to make our city look better from the outside. For that, again, I applaud Lloyd Winnecke for investing in the downtown area. …But now it’s time to help our community feel better on the inside by investing… in them.

Sure, we can buy and build all the buildings we want, but if we don’t have the money left over to pay them off and to maintain them, the overall condition on the inside of our community will eventually pull those beautiful facial features into the frown lines and crows feet of yesterday.

Touting cosmetic accomplishments and stating surface-level successes will hold the line of our conversations and keep a smile on our collective face, but beauty is not found in appearance only, but it’s what is on the inside that determines… our true beauty.

So, just like the pioneers of this great country, we must not look only to the appearance of things but get to the heart of matters, to objectively recognize the problems, and bring forth much-needed solutions.

Solution-Oriented Pioneers is what we need in Evansville, to bring the positive changes we all desire. If we focus on the appearance of this city only… without recognizing our internal flaws, we will overlook the course and direction of our future, and we will have invested in a fleeting cause.

Let’s look at the problems for a moment, and recognize our need for change.

– Nearly 25% of our population lives in poverty. That’s 27,260 people. There is a need for change.

– While some will brag that chronic homelessness is on the decline, overall homelessness in Evansville has actually increased by 12% in the last year alone. Chronic-homeless-numbers do not matter to the more than 50 recently homeless individuals who are suffering through their newly-found situations. There is a need for change.

– 97% …that’s 97% of the cities in Indiana… is considered safer than Evansville in violent crime and property crime. There is a need for change.

– In the past several years, Evansville has been named the Meth Capital of the U.S., the Suicide Capital of America, the most depressed city, and the Most Miserable city in the country. There is a need for change.

– Heroine activity, drug overdose deaths, stabbings, and shootings have filled our local news in recent days. There is a need for change.

– A $20 million dollar hotel which stands at half the height which was promised us, remains at only a 47% occupancy rate. A Medical School which was projected to bring 2,000 students to Evansville has fallen drastically short. The vacancy rate of buildings in Evansville is through the roof but we continue to invest in more. There is a need for change.

– When the projections are high, but the results… are low, eventually it will be the taxpayers that have to pay the piper. There is a need for change.

– $4 million dollars in First Responder Medical bills remain unpaid. And the morale of our First Responders has plummeted over their Health Insurance and the lack of backing in our city. There is a need for change.

While the cosmetic appearance of Evansville is becoming more and more beautiful every day… if we continue to highlight that beauty and ignore the problems at the core, Evansville will continue in the way that it has if we don’t recognize that need for change.

If we ignore the problems, we will continue to fix what is not broken. We will take on unnecessary projects, we will spend money unnecessarily, and we will sacrifice our desired results.

Additionally, the overall condition of a city cannot be transformed if we only transform one part of the city. Residents and business owners feel neglected in parts of town that are not downtown. I will support and bring change to the West Side, the East Side, the North Side… and especially the South Side. And I will do it by working with developers, by working with organizations, and by working with the community.

Evansville’s focus has been cosmetic. My focus as mayor will be to bring the positive results we need to the very core of our city, to fill the empty buildings with value and character for the purpose of building our economy. To cause what’s inside to reflect the beauty of the outside.

I will work with organizations to find the best ways to bring in attractions that actually attract, which would also increase and better our economy. Simultaneously, I will focus on working with local businesses for the best options available to grow our city and to expand its population. I will only invest in capital improvement projects that actually improve capital. And I will bring conservative projections with high results.

As mayor, I will focus my efforts on bringing those results for the citizens of Evansville. I will cut unnecessary overspending. I will bring about full and absolute government transparency and accountability. And I will bring a fresh outlook to running a balanced budget with a focus on the bottom line.

I will be committed to keeping taxes low. I will work with developers to bring about more affordable housing. I will work with local businesses and business owners to help them succeed in this city. I also will work to attract potential residents to our community to bring forth a population growth that we haven’t seen in over 50 years.

Ultimately, I will return the eyes and the heart of this city from the high-dollar projects… back… to the most valuable assets we have… our people.

Thank you.

Steve Ary
