University of Southern Indiana junior goalkeeper Justin Faas (Carmel, Indiana) was named the United Soccer Coaches NCAA Divison II Men’s Player of the Week after leading the Screaming Eagles to a pair of victories last week. The weekly national award is the first for Faas and the first in the history of the USI men’s soccer program.

Faas, who was named the GLVC Defensive Player of the Week for the third time in his career on Monday, began last week’s matches by posting a shutout over Lindenwood University and led the Eagles to their first victory of the season. He faced 13 shots and made five saves in the win.

The weekly GLVC action concluded with Faas posting a second shutout, a 2-0 victory over the University of Missouri-St. Louis. Faas blanked the Tritons with four saves after facing nine total attacks.

Overall for the week, Faas had a 0.00 goals against average, made nine saves, and recorded a pair of shutouts. The junior goalkeeper has 10 career shutouts, moving into fifth all-time at USI and three away from fourth.

Faas and the Eagles (2-3-2, 2-2-1 GLVC) return to action this week on the road when they travel to Southwest Baptist University

Eagles sweep GLVC Runner of the Week awards

0

University of Southern Indiana senior Austin Nolan (Evansville, Indiana) and junior Jennifer Comastri (Indianapolis, Indiana) have been named the Great Lakes Valley Conference Runners of the Week for men’s and women’s cross country, respectively.

Nolan finished third out of 110 competitors this past weekend at the Trevecca Division II Showcase Invitational with an eight-kilometer time of 25 minutes, 2.90 seconds. His effort, which included a late surge from fourth to third, helped the No. 8 Screaming Eagles to a one-point win over No. 16 Lee University as well as a four-point win over No. 20 University of Charleston. The University of Colorado-Colorado Springs, ranked No. 10 in the nation, finished eight points behind the Eagles in fourth place.

A two-time defending GLVC champion, GLVC Runner of the Year and GLVC Scholar Athlete of the Year, Nolan is collecting his third Runner of the Week laurel after earning the award twice a year ago.

Comastri blazed her way to a second-place finish out of 83 runners at the Trevecca Division II Showcase Invitational. Her 5k time of 17:41.20 was less than five seconds off the winning pace and helped the No. 12 Eagles secure a second-place finish in what turned out to be a two-horse race between USI and No. 10 Lee University.

A two-time All-GLVC honoree, Comastri is earning GLVC Runner of the Week honors for the first time in her career. She is the first USI women’s runner to collect the honor since Hope Jones (Cumberland, Indiana) was named GLVC Runner of the Week in September of 2017.

USI returns to action October 12 when the Eagles compete at the Lewis University Crossover in Romeoville, Illinois. The Eagles host the Great Lakes Valley Conference Championships October 26 as well as the NCAA II Midwest Region Championships November 9 at Angel Mounds.

Gov. Holcomb names Cox as Indiana State Fire Marshal

0

Gov. Eric J. Holcomb today announced he has selected South Bend Fire Chief Stephen Cox to serve as the Indiana state fire marshal.

“Chief Cox brings great experience, leadership and vision to the Indiana Department of Homeland Security,” Gov. Holcomb said. “I know that as the state’s fire marshal he will enhance public safety in the state of Indiana and continue to build partnerships with first responders and all Hoosiers.”

Cox has served with the South Bend Fire Department for 26 years, with 12 years in executive leadership. With the South Bend Fire Department, he served as a paramedic, firefighter, EMS instructor, and EMS chief of the fire department, before being promoted to fire chief in 2012.

As fire chief, Cox created a fire training center which has enabled the department to build a robust training program to support the South Bend department as well as other departments in the state. He also collaborated with the Indiana National Guard to form a Helicopter Aquatic Rescue Team, an important asset for Indiana’s disaster preparedness.

Cox served in the U.S. Army as a combat medic during Desert Shield and Desert Storm. He earned a bachelor’s degree from Indiana University and has also earned numerous FEMA certifications related to the National Incident Management System.

Former Indiana State Fire Marshal Jim Greeson retired last month after 11 years of service. The fire marshal leads the Indiana Department of Homeland Security Division of Fire and Building Safety. The division investigates suspicious fires, promotes fire prevention and enforces fire and building safety codes in all public buildings, among other duties.
