Southwest Indiana AHEC to host workshop for preceptors November 2

outhwest Indiana Area Health Education Center (AHEC) is partnering with the University of Southern Indiana, University of Evansville and Indiana University School of Medicine–Evansville to present a free workshop for preceptors, fieldwork educators and clinical instructors from 7:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday, November 2 at the Stone Family Center for Health Sciences in Evansville.

Continuing education credits will be provided by the USI Center for Health Professions Lifelong Learning.

The keynote speaker is Dr. Bethany Huebner, Department Chair for the School of Physical Therapy and Health Professions Education and the Program Director of the Doctor of Physical Therapy program at the University of Evansville. The title of her presentation is “Three Secrets to Treating a Case of the Mondays.”

Also presenting at the workshop are:

Dr. Kevin Valadares, Professor and Chair of Health Administration and Health Informatics at the University of Southern Indiana, who will be speaking on one of his research areas using emotional intelligence to support leadership and team development.

Dr. Sarah Volkman, Geriatrician at Deaconess Primary Care for Seniors in Evansville, who will share her expertise of integrating age-friendly practices within a healthcare system.

Dr. Shawn Curry, Clinic Director for the Internal Medicine Resident-Faculty Clinic at Good Samaritan Hospital in Vincennes, who will talk about his journey “From the Back Roads to a White Coat: A Unique View of Mentorship for the Underrepresented Student.”

Be Prepared When You Vote

With early voting starting in Indiana and Election Day just a few weeks away, it is important Hoosiers are prepared to vote.

Indiana law requires voters show a photo identification (ID) when they cast their ballots.

The ID must:

Display your photo;
Display your name;
Display an expiration date and be current or have expired after the Nov. 8, 2022 General Election;
Be issued by the state or federal government.

If you need to update your state-issued ID, the Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles will offer extended hours on Monday, Nov. 4, and Tuesday, Nov. 5.

Men’s Golf falls to Evansville in match play

EVANSVILLE, Ind. — University of Southern Indiana Men’s Golf dropped a match-play contest to the University of Evansville, 7.5-2.5, at Cambridge Golf Course on Thursday.

All 10 USI golfers competed for the Screaming Eagles in the 18-hole match against the Purple Aces. Each school had one golfer face another on the course and the golfer who shot lower for the round earned a point for his school. Ties earned both universities half of a point.

USI got two match victories in the event. Senior Jason Bannister jumped out to an early two-hole lead. Bannister extended his lead and finished the match up six holes shooting a 44 over the 13 holes.

Freshman Jairen Stroud earned the second victory for the Eagles after a 63-stroke performance over 16 holes.

USI had one match come to end in a tie. Junior Carter Goebel saw his match go the full 18, ending with both competitors shooting 69, or three under par.

Jasper Strassenfest supports Vincennes University Jasper students

ASPER, Ind. October 17, 2024 – The Vincennes University Jaspe r Foundation Scholastic Excellence Award is part of VUJ’s ongoing commitment to making quality higher education accessible to high school graduates.

The award is a one-year, full-tuition scholarship that supports Indiana high school graduates in Dubois, Crawford, Orange, Perry, Harrison, Martin and Spencer counties who attend VU Jasper. In addition to covering full tuition, the award includes a $500 stipend per semester for books and a new laptop computer, providing students with the resources they need to succeed academically.

Scholarships like this play a vital role in helping students thrive. The VU Jasper Foundation recently received a generous donation of nearly $31,000 from the Jasper Strassenfest Half Pot proceeds to support the Scholastic Excellence Award.

Assistant Director of Special Projects at VU Jasper Austin Welp said, “The University and the VU Jasper Foundation are deeply grateful for the community’s generosity. We are also incredibly thankful for all of our volunteers and their dedication to ensure the success of local students.”

The Jasper Strassenfest Committee’s donation of $30,706.56 will directly fund the Scholastic Excellence Award, helping ensure that students will continue to benefit from this program’s financial support.

This substantial donation will enable the Foundation to offer this award to up to 10 local students.

The Scholastic Excellence Award helps the University empower students to pursue their academic goals and prepare for successful careers by providing significant financial support. It also allows students to focus on their studies and maximize their college experience.

VU Golf close 2024 Fall season at Rend Lake Fall Invitational

INA, Ill. – The Vincennes University Golf team closed out their 2024 Fall schedule Monday and Tuesday at the 2024 Rend Lake College Fall Invitational hosted at the Rend Lake Golf Complex.

The Trailblazers closed out the season strong with a second place finish as a team and three individuals placing in the top 10.

Freshman Landon Gardner (Danville, Ind.) led the way for the Trailblazers on the links, opening the tournament Monday with an even par 72 before coming back Tuesday, battling strong winds to a final round 78 for a tournament total of 150 and a second place finish overall.

Freshman Brock Naile (Trico, Ill.) was the second VU finisher in the top five, bouncing back from an opening round 77 to shoot a 75 on Tuesday to finish with a total of 152 to take fifth place on the leaderboard.

Freshman Kadin Gibson (Franklin, Ind.) was the third Trailblazer in the top 10 with a first round 75 and a final round 81 to take seventh place in the tournament.

Sophomore Alex Nealis (Olney, Ill.) was the next VU finisher, having a very consistent tournament with an opening round 80 and a 79 in Tuesday’s final round to finish in a tie for 12th place in the tournament.

Freshman Parker Steininger (Vincennes, Ind.) rounds out the Vincennes scorers with an opening round 80 and an 82 in the second round to finish in a tie for 20th.

Freshman Matthew Mills (Boonville, Ind.) and sophomore Jackson Stone (Vincennes, Ind.) competed in the tournament as individuals, with Mills posting scores of 80 and 79 to tie for 12th overall and Stone coming in with an 89 on Monday and 87 Tuesday to finish 41st overall.

The Trailblazers as a team finished with a team score of 304 in Monday’s first round and a team score of 313 on Tuesday, with a tournament team score of 617 and a second place finish overall.

“We had a strong tournament, finishing second in the eight team field but was naturally disappointed in not winning it,” VU Hall of Fame Golf Coach Dennis Chattin said. “We were playing well in the first round and then really struggled on the finishing holes 17 and 18. We had the lead going into these two holes but our top four scorers were nine over in those two holes and lost the lead.”

“The second day wasn’t much better when we were seven over par on those two holes,” Chattin added. “Those two holes literally cost us winning the tournament.”

“Landon had a really good tournament, finishing second in the tournament and had the low score of even par 72 in the first round,” Chattin said. “He was two under par going into 17 and 18 but bogied them both for an even par round.”

“Brock Naile had a good tournament as well, finishing fifth in the tournament,” Chattin added. “We had a great start in the second round but when the wind started blowing, we just didn’t handle it very well. We had gusts of close to 30 miles per hour. I knew scores were going to go up with that wind but we didn’t flight the ball down very well to score better.”

VU closes out a very strong 2024 Fall season and will look to continue to build and improve on this early success as Vincennes now prepares for the Spring season in 2025.

IACP on Local Social Media

Beginning on Friday the 18th, you will be seeing unique posts on our social media. Multiple officers from EPD will be attending the annual International Chiefs of Police (IACP) conference in Boston, MA. The IACP Annual Conference and Exposition is the largest and most impactful law enforcement event of the year – more than 16,000 public safety professionals come to learn new techniques, advance their knowledge and careers, and equip their department for ongoing success.

Henderson Chief of Police Billy Bolin, Vanderburgh County Sheriff Noah Robinson, Evansville Chief of Police Philip Smith and Special Projects Coordinator Taylor Merriss will be presenters of a workshop titled Community Policing: Where Everybody Knows Your Name. Tying in with the Boston theme, they will be discussing what’s at the core of community policing; engaging with communities to build and establish mutual trust. Real-world examples will be discussed on how to connect with both the community and media though the use of public outreach, social media, and traditional media. This is the fifth straight year that an EPD member has been a presenter or on a panel at the international conference.

Additionally, Special Projects Coordinator Taylor Merriss, who serves as the IACP PIO Section Midwest Regional Vice Chair, was selected to serve as a Social Media Ambassador during IACP conference.

Eagles blank Trojans for second straight OVC win

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – University of Southern Indiana Women’s Soccer posted its second consecutive 1-0 victory Thursday night, as the Screaming Eagles defeated the University of Arkansas at Little Rock from Strassweg Field.

The result gave Southern Indiana (4-8-4, 3-2-2 OVC) its fourth overall win and third Ohio Valley Conference win to match both respective win totals from last season in 2023. On the flip side, USI handed Little Rock (7-6-3, 4-1-2 OVC) its first loss in conference play.

Southern Indiana came out pushing the tempo into the attacking half, taking a pair of early shots. Little Rock also had a stretch in the attacking half, leading to three saves in a 10-minute span by USI redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Anna Markland.

Minutes after redshirt freshman forward Eva Boer had a shot miss just above the crossbar, sophomore midfielder Pilar Torres had a shot saved. However, Torres would not be denied in the 27^th minute, connecting on the backend of a pass across the front of the goal to give USI a 1-0 lead. The assists went to sophomore midfielder Kerigan Kivisto and junior forward Payton Seymour.

Torres’ second goal of the season came after also scoring the Eagles’ game-winning goal last time out against Morehead State University on Sunday. Junior midfielder Peyton Murphy was the last Screaming Eagle to score in consecutive matches, doing so in the fourth and fifth matches of OVC play in 2023, before Torres’ two goals this week.

The Screaming Eagles’ 1-0 lead carried into halftime as the defense blocked four shots and Markland made a couple more saves in the latter minutes of the first half. Both teams recorded 10 shots in the opening half.

After a couple of early looks out of the break from USI, the shot rate decreased as the match turned into a slugfest and a battle for possession until the midway point of the second half. The Eagles’ defense continued to stand tall by winning one-on-one and clearing the ball back up the field.

Torres and the Screaming Eagles sought a second goal and almost had one with under 10 minutes remaining, but a shot coming off a set piece was cleared away at the goal line. Then Little Rock went in the other direction with an opportunity. Markland came through and covered up a big save following a few deflections inside the box.

USI’s defense sealed the win with a pair of blocked shots and multiple clearances to expire the rest of the game clock.

For the contest, USI registered 15 shots with six on goal while Little Rock had 17 shots and seven on goal. Between the posts, Markland earned her second consecutive shutout and the team’s third this season with Thursday’s victory. USI’s netminder grabbed seven saves.

Torres’ goal Thursday was only the second goal the Trojans have conceded this year in Ohio Valley Conference action. Torres paced USI in the win with seven shots and three on goal. The last time a USI player had seven or more shots was by Katlyn Andres against Truman State University in October 2021 with eight attempts. After scoring in consecutive contests and picking up five assists previously this season, Torres now leads the squad with nine points on the campaign.

Through Thursday’s slate of matches around the OVC and with only two conference games remaining in the regular season, Southern Indiana is tied in fourth place with Eastern Illinois University at 11 points and only four points behind first-place Lindenwood University.
