USI Hosts Purdue Northwest To Open 2019 Schedule
The University of Southern Indiana women’s soccer team opens 2019 Thursday when it hosts Purdue University Northwest for a 2 p.m. match-up at Strassweg Field. Live coverage of 2019 Screaming Eagles action can be found at GoUSIEagles.com.
The USI-Purdue Northwest match is the first of back-to-back non-conference contests during the first weekend of action. The Eagles finish the first weekend on the road when they visit Walsh University September 8 in North Canton, Ohio. The USI-Walsh match is slated or an 11 a.m. (CDT) kick-off.
Following the trip to Walsh, USI returns to open the 2019 defense of its 2018 GLVC regular-season title by hosting McKendree University at Strassweg Field September 15.
Week 1 Eagle Notes:Â
Defending a crown:Â The Eagles won a share of the GLVC regular-season crown in 2018. The share of the title was the first time in program history that USI had captured a GLVC regular-season title.
Unbeaten Streak:Â USI enters 2019 on an eight-match, unbeaten streak. The Eagles finished last season with seven-straight wins, tying a school record, and a tie in the GLVC Tournament with Rockhurst University (Rockhurst advanced over USI in the GLVC Tournament due to penalty kicks).
GLVC Preseason poll:Â USI is predicted to place sixth in the GLVC during the 2019 season. USI posted a 9-3-1 GLVC mark while on its way to collect a shared regular-season title.
Leading scorers return in 2019: The Eagles return the top five scorers from 2018, led by junior forward Maggie Winter, who posted a team-high 19 points on seven goals and five assists. Junior defender Madelyne Juenger, who tied with senior forward/midfielder Emilie Blomenkamp; junior forward/midfielder Taylor McCormick; and sophomore midfielder Rachel Grey for second on the team in scoring with eight points, dished a team-best six assists last fall.
Climbing the record book: Junior forward Maggie Winter is starting to climb the USI record book categories, ranking 12th in points and 11th in goals. She needs five points to reach the USI top 10 in scoring and four tallies to reach the top 10 in scoring. Winter tied a USI record last fall with three goals in a game versus Oakland City University.
Schoenstein enters his 4th year: USI Head Coach Eric Schoenstein is in his fourth season as the head coach of the Eagles, producing a 29-19-7 mark (.591), a share of a GLVC regular-season title, and three-straight GLVC Tournament appearances.
USI vs. Purdue Northwest: USI won the first-ever meeting with Purdue Northwest, 2-1 in double-overtime last year. Sophomore defender Madeline Weston posted the first goal in regulation, while senior forward/midfielder Emilie Blomenkamp scored the game-winner late in the second overtime.
Purdue Northwest in 2018:Â Â The Pride finished 2018 with a 4-14 record and lost in the opening round of the GLIAC Tournament.
USI vs. Walsh:Â The Walsh Cavaliers won the first meeting with the Eagles last fall, posting a 2-0 shutout at Strassweg Field.
Walsh in 2018:Â Â The Cavaliers were 15-5-1 in 2018, reaching the G-MAC Tournament championship game and the second round of the NCAA II Tournament. Walsh fell to Grand Valley State University, 5-0, in the NCAA II second round, after defeating Saginaw Valley State University, 1-0, to open the Midwest Regional.

INDIANAPOLIS—Allowing businesses to check the status of their taxes at any given point is just one perk of the new Indiana Department of Revenue’s Project NextDOR, which launches the first of four phases on Monday.
Project NextDOR is a completely new tax processing system, which will include the Indiana Tax System, or ITS, which is a more efficient internal tax processing software. The Indiana Taxpayer Information Management Engine, or INTIME, is also a part of the project and it includes a 24/7 self-service e-portal.
The Department of Revenue has a 14-year contract with Fast Enterprises and will spend $60 million in the four-year implementation phase and more than $17 million in the 10-year support and maintenance phase, said DOR Commissioner Adam Krupp.
Business owners will be the first to experience the new system and will now have expanded functionality, including online registration and the ability to view, file and amend returns. Hoosiers will also be able to view correspondence, send messages and update names and addresses through this new e-portal.
“This is definitely a game-changer,†Krupp said.
NextDOR will eventually replace the old system of filing taxes that have been used for the last 25 years and is projected to be finished by July 2022.
The first phase focuses on corporate use, the second will include sales, the third will allow individuals to participate and the last phase will work with special taxes such as alcohol and gasoline.
Throughout the transition, DOR plans to keep the system up and running, though the online customer applications will be temporarily unavailable Saturday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. in preparation for the launch of INTIME on Monday.
“The entire department of revenue is excited about this project it is long overdue, but we are ready for rollout one,†Krupp said. “Next thing you know this project will be over and the system will be implemented, and the department of revenue will be fully transformed and modernized with the latest technology in the revenue processing industry.â€

Otters Come Up Short In Finale, Finish Regular Season With 57 Wins
With the game tied at five in the bottom of the eighth inning, Taylor Sparks hit a solo home run to lead the Southern Illinois Miners to a 6-5 win over the Evansville Otters.
With Sunday’s loss, the Evansville Otters finished their regular season with a 57-39 record, matching the franchise’s single-season record for wins set in 2014.
2019 marks the fourth straight season that Evansville Otters won 51 or more games in the regular season.
Sunday’s game started with an offensive slugfest with eight runs scored after the first inning.
The Miners started Jake Waters, who was treading lightly in the top of the first.
Elijah MacNamee hit a hard ground ball to Taylor Sparks at third base, who would overthrow Jamey Smart on an error, allowing David Cronin to score the Otters’ first run.
Cronin singled, extending his on-base streak to 21 consecutive games.
Taylor Lane, Jack Meggs, and J.J. Gould followed with RBI singles, giving starter Jake Welch a 4-0 lead heading into the bottom of the first.
The Miners would respond with four runs of their own in the bottom of the first.
Jamey Smart hit an RBI double to score Yeltsin Gudino to make the score 4-1.
Kyle Davis grounded out to third, scoring Gianfranco Wawoe, as the Miners cut the Otters’ lead in the half.
Arturo Nieto hit an RBI ground-rule double to score Smart, and Nieto would score on a Joe Duncan RBI single to tie the game at four.
Welch would settle in the game, not allowing a single run over the next three innings. He would earn a no-decision, throwing five innings, allowing five runs and a walk with four strikeouts.
After allowing four runs in the first, Waters would settle in as well, retiring nine straight batters from the second to fourth innings. He would toss six innings, allowing five runs-three earned-with four strikeouts. He also earned a no-decision.
Hunter Cullen led off the top of the fifth with a single and later came around to score with a slide into home on a groundout from Lane after the throw from Smart was offline.
The RBI would be credited to Lane, recording his second one on the day.
Smart would score in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI double from Nieto, tying the game at five.
Cam Opp threw a scoreless sixth, and Tyler Vail, coming off the injured list, threw a scoreless seventh.
In the bottom of the eighth, Sparks hit the go-ahead home run to centerfield for his 10th of the season.
With the tying run on second and the go-ahead run at first, David Cronin lined out to Yeltsin Gudino at shortstop who threw to second base to double up Wetrich to end the game in the top of the ninth.
Will Headean earned the win, improving his record to 3-1.
Michael Gizzi was given the loss, dropping his record to 0-2.
Jake Godfrey picked up the save, his second of the season.
The Otters will now turn their attention and look ahead to the Frontier League postseason.

The City-County Observer is proud to announce that EPD SERGEANT JASON CULLUM has been selected a City-County Observer “Outstanding Community Services Award” winner for 2019.
Jason Cullum is an extremely likable person and is involved in every aspect of our community.
In 2013, Sgt. Cullum founded Cops Connecting with Kids. To date, this unique partnership between law enforcement, schools, and the community has provided all-expenses-paid trips to Walt Disney World for 166 underserved kids from Evansville.
Sgt. Jason Cullum is a 20 year veteran of the Evansville Indiana Police Department. He has served in many assignments that include co-founding the first-ever EPD Bike Patrol Unit, SWAT team member, Filed Training Officer. He also served as the Crime Prevention Unit supervisor for 3 years.
He is currently assigned as the agency’s Public Information Officer and also coordinates the department’s Speaker’s Bureau program.
Sgt. Cullum is an Evansville native and returned home to serve his community after a 4-year enlistment in the United States Air Force, where he served as a Military Working Dog handler and a Korean National Police Liaison.
In 2016, Sgt Cullum also served as a Fellow for the Office of Community Policing (COPS office) in Washington D.C. where he served as a subject matter expert for community policing development and law enforcement social media.

UE’s Department of Art Announces Les Miley Artist’s Exhibition to Run September 3 To October 19
The University of Evansville’s Department of Art will host an exhibition of selected works by UE professor emeritus, Les Miley, a nationally and internationally recognized artist and art educator. The exhibition will open on Tuesday, September 3 and runs until Sunday, October 19.
On Thursday, September 5, the public is invited to a reception at 6:30 p.m. followed by an artist’s talk Miley at 7:00 p.m. in the Melvin Peterson Gallery at 1935 Lincoln Avenue in Evansville, Ind.
Miley joined the UE art faculty in 1961 and retired as chair of the Department of Art in 2001. He served as the director and instructor of the Ceramics Workshop in New Harmony, Ind. from 1966 to 2009 and feature articles and photographs of his work have been included in nine prestigious publications.
The exhibition has been curated from several collections and will also include works by a selection Miley’s previous students.
“My works in clay are a celebration of life with an emphasis on the joyful, positive aspects of living in this world, said Miley. “Fundamental to my work in clay, and in my living experience, is a sense of order combined with an element of chance.”

Otters To Face Rascals In FLDS Starting Today
Following the Evansville Otters claiming the Frontier League West Division title on Saturday, the 2019 Frontier League postseason field was set with the Otters drawing the River City Rascals in the first round divisional series.
The Otters won their first division title since 1999 on Saturday when they clinched the West Division over the Florence Freedom.
Evansville earned the top seed in the postseason and will face a familiar opponent in the River City Rascals in the FLDS.
The Rascals are also in the West Division, finishing third in the standings but are the fourth seed in the playoffs.
Evansville went 5-7 against River City in the regular season but won two of three in their last meeting of the season at Bosse Field.
The FLDS schedule is as follows:
Tuesday, Sept. 3 – Evansville at River City from CarShield Field in O’Fallon, Mo. at 6:35 p.m. CT.
Wednesday, Sept 4 – Evansville at River City from CarShield Field in O’Fallon, Mo. at 6:35 p.m. CT.
Thursday, Sept. 5 – Travel/Rain Makeup Date
Friday, Sept. 6 – River City at Evansville from Bosse Field in Evansville, Ind. at 6:35 p.m. CT.

VICTORY INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL START ON SEPTEMBER 12, 2019
We will be showing 120 films from 30 countries during this event. The “Opening Night Celebration” is scheduled on the evening of the September 12th at the Victory Theatre from 6 pm to 9:30 pm with an after-party to follow.
The screenings will begin at noon on Friday, September 13th and we will have a multiple of venues locationss throughout downtown Evansville.  The venues are; Central Library, Innovation Pointe, Encounter Church, and Old National Public Theatre at WNIN.
Screenings on Saturday the 14th will go from 10 am to 6 pm and ending with an Awards Ceremony at Encounter Church at 7 pm and will have an after-party event to follow.
The organizers will also have panels and presentations on acting, producing, marketing, scoring, working with film commissions, and also a presentation by an employee of SAG-AFTRA.
As of today, this event will have over 38 filmmakers with selections in competition at the festival, many of them coming from out of state including many from the East and West coasts. Â Also, movies to be shown crosses all genres being features and shorts from that are documentaries, comedies, dramas, sci-fi, student, horror, animation – you name it, we’ve got it.
Matthew Ulm, Festival Director said, “Many of our selections have screened at Sundance, Vancouver International Film Festival, Toronto International Film Festival, Atlanta Film Festival, and Cannes.”
