Coverage of USI Volleyball can be found at GoUSIEagles.com

Season-Opening Notes:

Senior Leadership: The Eagles embark on the 2019 campaign with five seniors in tow: middle hitter Elexis Coleman, defensive specialist Lizzy Gardner, libero/outside hitter Mikaila Humphrey, middle blocker/right-side hitter Amanda Jung and outside hitter Lindsey Stone. The group has combined to play in 332 matches across a combined 14 seasons of work; nearly 24 matches per player, per season.

Starting Strong: USI Volleyball has won six of its last seven season-openers, all six victories coming in three-set matches. The Eagles are 17-13 in season-openers since 1989, 13-7 over the last 20 years.

Under New Management: Head Coach Randi Raff enters her first season at the helm for the Eagles. The 2005 graduate of USI returns to Evansville after spending several years as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at the NCAA Division-I level, most recently at Georgia Tech.

The GLVC’s Opinion: The league’s coaches predicted the Eagles to land 12th in the 2019 preseason poll. USI finished tied for 12th with Quincy University in 2018.

USI vs. Winona State: In three all-time meetings, the Eagles have yet to top the Warriors. The first-ever meeting came in 2007, followed by a pair of matches against then-No. 13 Winona State in the Augustana Invitational in 2016.

Winona State in 2018: The Warriors posted a 13-15 record last season, 10-10 as a member of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference. Winona State posted wins against two nationally-ranked squads in 2018: No. 7 Southwest Minnesota State University and No. 18 Wayne State College (NE)

USI vs. Charleston: The Screaming Eagles have bested the Golden Eagles in all four all-time matchups. USI has defeated Charleston in three sets all four meetings, the most recent meeting was 2002.

Charleston in 2018: The Golden Eagles went 18-17 a year ago, with an 11-5 record in the Mountain East Conference.

USI vs. UIS: The Screaming Eagles lead the all-time series against the Prairie Stars 9-5, but all five losses for the Eagles have come in the last seven meetings (since 2015).

Illinois Springfield in 2018: The Prairie Stars are fresh off their best season since joining the NCAA, posting a 25-8 record (15-3 GLVC), collecting a share of the GLVC regular-season title and representing the GLVC as a sixth seed in the Midwest Regional a year ago.

Bicentennial Fountain Spouting Off Once Again

Bicentennial Fountain Spouting Off Once Again

By Brandon Barger

INDIANAPOLIS—After a long wait, the fountain in the centennial plaza at the Indiana Statehouse is spouting once again.

The fountain has been shut off since the winter of 2017, because of a problem with the control panel that worked the lights and the water element. It was originally built as part of the plaza commissioned by then-Gov. Mike Pence for Indiana’s bicentennial in 2016.

The fountain includes jets that shoot water into the air and small square lights that are lit up with different colors. The fountain also had a cascading front, which turns the fountain into a reflecting pool when the jets are turned off.

Earlier in August, Jill Carnell, the chief administrative officer of the Indiana Department of Administration, said the fountain itself cost $1.1 million and was expected to run annually between April 15 to Oct. 15.

Carnell said that it took a while for the IDOA to find contractors that could work on the $46,000 repair job on the fountain.

“There were several complex repairs and there are not very many vendors who work on fountains,” she said. “It took a while to figure out the best course of action going forward.”

After repairs were completed, the fountain was tested last Thursday and was fully operational on Friday. Carnell was very excited that the fountain was repaired on schedule.

“We at IDOA hoped to have the fountain operational by mid to late August, so we were glad to meet that deadline last week,” she said.

The fountain is expected to continue flowing until Oct.15.

University of Southern Indiana Men’s and Women’s Cross Country begins the year in a familiar spot as both teams are in the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches’ Association Preseason Top 25 rankings.

The Screaming Eagles are ranked No. 11 in the men’s poll, while the women start the year ranked No. 16.

USI’s men return a plethora of talent, led by two-time reigning GLVC champion Austin Nolan (Evansville, Indiana) and sophomore All-American Titus Winders (Mansfield, Tennessee).

The duo finished first and second, respectively, at the Great Lakes Valley Conference Championship last year, leading the Eagles to their 14th consecutive conference title and 15th in the last 16 years. Winders went on to finish first at the NCAA II Midwest Region Championships, while the 30th-place finish at last year’s national meet netted him All-America honors in his rookie campaign.

Senior Hope-Jones (Cumberland, Indiana) and junior Jennifer Comastri (Indianapolis, Indiana) return to lead the women’s squad in 2019. Jones, who sat out last fall, earned second-team All-America honors on the track last spring, while Comastri was fifth at last year’s GLVC meet.

USI begins the season September 13 when it hosts the Stegemoller Classic at Angel Mounds in Evansville, Indiana. The Eagles also host the GLVC Championships October 26 as well as the NCAA II Midwest Region Championships November 9.

University of Southern Indiana Women’s Golf opens the 2019-20 season Sunday when it hosts the 24th annual Screaming Eagles Classic at Cambridge Golf Course. The two-day, 36-hole event is being held at Cambridge Golf Course for the 14th consecutive year.

USI is one of 14 teams competing in this year’s tournament. Joining the Eagles are Great Lakes Valley Conference opponents Bellarmine University, Lewis University, Maryville University, McKendree University, Missouri University of Science & Technology, Quincy University, Rockhurst University, William Jewell College and GLVC newcomer Lindenwood University. Trevecca Nazarene University, Indiana Tech University, John A. Logan College join the tournament this year. Past GLVC member and current regional foe Kentucky Wesleyan College rounds out the 14-team field.

Seniors Abbey Leighty (Mount Carmel, Illinois) and Grace Davis (Valparaiso, Indiana) headline the 2019-20 squad. Leighty looks to build off her NCAA II East Super Regional berth and a 78.63 strokes-per-round average this past season. Davis also had a solid showing last year finishing with a strokes-per-round average of 81.39. Davis is a two-time Screaming Eagles Classic champion (2016, 2017).

Junior Brooke Moser (Leo, Indiana) continues to impress as she finished with a strokes-per-round average of 76.50 besting her 80.24 in her sophomore season. Moser picked up her first collegiate victory at the Dan Salisbury Memorial, as well as adding two top-ten finishes at the Screaming Eagles Classic and Trevecca Music City Invitational in her 2018-19 fall campaign.

USI is under the direction of Head Coach Jim Cheaney, who is no stranger to USI Golf. Cheaney, who begins his second year with the women’s team, directed the men’s program from 2012-15.

Play begins Sunday at 8:30 a.m., with the first USI golfers teeing off at 10:10 a.m. The second round will be a shotgun start on Monday starting at 8:30 a.m. Cambridge Golf Course is located about a mile south of the Hwy. 41 and I-64 intersection.

Aces prepare for big season

On the heels of the unveiling of the non-conference portion of the 2019-20 University of Evansville men’s basketball schedule, the Missouri Valley Conference announced the full league schedule on Tuesday afternoon.

Evansville is set to open its conference slate on New Year’s Eve in Springfield, Mo. where the Aces will face Missouri State.  In last year’s meeting at JQH Arena, Evansville earned its first road win of the season, taking a 70-64 decision.

Home league play commences on Saturday, January 4 against Valparaiso.  UE swept the season series against the Crusaders in 2018-19 including a 64-53 win at the Ford Center on February 2.  Another home game is on tap on Jan. 8 when defending MVC Tournament champion Bradley comes to town.  The Braves edged the Aces in Evansville last season by a final of 81-73.

On Saturday, Jan. 11, Evansville travels to Chicago to take on Loyola before making the short trek north on Highway 41 to play Indiana State on the 15th.  Two home games follow, beginning on Jan. 18 versus Missouri State.  It will be just a 19-day turnaround from the first to the second meeting against the Bears.  Another tough home game will see Drake come to town on the 22nd.  In last season’s meeting at the Ford Center, the Aces earned a thrilling 82-77 win in double overtime.

The month of January comes to an end with a pair of road games, starting with a contest on Sunday, Jan. 26 at Valparaiso.  In the regular-season finale last year, UE picked up a 65-63 win inside the ARC.  On the 29th, Evansville makes its way to Redbird Arena to face Illinois State.

Two home games begin the month of February, starting on Saturday, Feb. 1 against UNI.  Four days later, Southern Illinois heads to Evansville.  Three of the next four games will take place on the road, starting on Feb. 9 at Bradley.  Evansville is back home on the 12th to face Loyola.  The Aces had one of their top performances last season in the home win over the Ramblers, taking a 67-48 triumph.

Another Sunday road tilt is on tap on the 16th when UE heads to Drake to face the Bulldogs.  UE then treks to Carbondale, Ill. on Feb. 20 to face SIU.  Indiana State visits the Ford Center on Sunday, Feb. 23 before Evansville wraps up its road schedule at UNI on the 26th.  The Aces complete the regular season on Saturday, Feb. 29, welcoming Illinois State to the Ford Center.

Game times will be released once all TV games have been set in place.
