Eagles come home to start GLVC play

0

The University of Southern Indiana men’s soccer team begins the defense of its 2018 GLVC regular season title Sunday when it hosts McKendree University at Strassweg Field. Match time is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. and coverage can be found on GoUSIEagles.com.

This Sunday’s USI men’s and women’s soccer games will be played in honor of Oliver “Ollie” Dill, a child of the USI Family who tragically lost his life this past summer. All ticket proceeds will be donated to a selected charity in Ollie’s name.

USI’s first homestand of the season extends through September 20 when the University of Indianapolis visits Strassweg Field for a 7:30 p.m. match-up.

Week 2 Eagle Notes:

Eagles start the year 0-1-1: The Eagles started slow in 2019, posting a 2-1 loss at Northern Michigan University and a 3-3 double-overtime tie at Northwood University.

The offense has big day versus Northwood: After scoring a single tally in the loss to NMU, USI found its offensive stride in the 3-3 tie with Northwood, scoring once in the first and rallied to tie the score twice in the second half. Junior forward Graham Miller finished the weekend with a team-high three points on one goal and one assist, while junior defender Justin Raines, sophomore midfielder Ryan Nevins, and sophomore defender Colten Walsh has two points each, all three adding one goal.

USI versus McKendree: USI leads the all-time series with McKendree, 7-4-2, after posting a 2-1 road win in 2018. The Eagles have won the last two meetings, but are .500 (2-2-1) against the Bearcats in the last five years.

The Bearcats in 2019: McKendree started the year 1-1-0 after losing to nationally-ranked Saginaw Valley State University, 2-0, and defeating Oakland City University, 3-0, on a neutral site in Indianapolis, Indiana.

USI versus UIndy: USI leads the all-time series with UIndy, 22-13-0, despite falling to the Greyhouds in 2018, 1-0. The loss was the only conference defeat last year for the Eagles. The Greyhounds have had the upper hand on the Eagles since 2013, winning the last seven meetings, six coming in GLVC regular season action.

The Greyhounds in 2019: The Greyhounds were perfect in their first two matches, defeating Oakland City, 4-1, and SVSU, 2-1, in overtime. UIndy hosts Bellarmine Sunday before coming to visit USI next Thursday.

Santoro begins his 11th year: USI Head Coach Mat Santoro has an 88-75-19 overall record at the helm. Santoro has guided the Eagles to a pair of NCAA II Tournament appearances; the 2018 GLVC regular season crown, and five GLVC Tournament appearances during his tenure.

Return to the GLVC Tournament: USI is looking for its fifth-straight trip to the GLVC Tournament for the first time since 1979-84 seasons.

GLVC leader in championships: USI has 10 GLVC men’s soccer titles since the conference was created in 1979, the most by any program in the league. The Eagles won the conference championships in 1979, 1980, 1981, 1982, 1983, 1984, 1988, 1989, 1990, and 1991.

AG Curtis Hill hosts crime prevention forums in Lake and Tippecanoe counties

Attorney General Curtis Hill today hosted crime prevention forums in Merrillville and Lafayette as part of a listening tour that involves visiting 14 cities across the state of Indiana. The purpose of the tour is to facilitate conversations aimed at developing solutions to residents’ crime-related concerns. Merrillville and Lafayette are the fifth and sixth stops on the listening tour with the next stop planned to take place in Bloomington.

“We are one state, but every area of the state has its own unique set of challenges,” Attorney General Hill said. “Not everyone can make their way to Central Indiana to talk about what they’re seeing in their corner of the state, and that is why we are bringing this forum to these various communities.”

The Office of the Attorney General will collect feedback at each forum and present findings at the office’s 10th Annual Drug Abuse Symposium on Oct. 29-30.

Founders, award recipients honored at annual USI Alumni Association luncheon

0

The University of Southern Indiana recognized its founders, supporters and award recipients at the annual Alumni Association Founders’ Day Luncheon, held on September 11 in Carter Hall.

“Think about this for a second: for the men and women who came before us in 1965 to be part of developing a university, it was, without question, nothing but a simple idea. People came together and talked with one another, but all it was was an idea, a possibility,” said Dr. Ronald Rochon, USI president. “And so you talk about the power of an idea? Never underestimate what it can do, how it can transform lives, and how it can propel a community. The University of Southern Indiana does that each and every day.”

The event, which featured remarks from Rochon and a recognition of the University’s past leadership, closed with the presentation of the Alumni Association’s three major awards: the Alumni Service Award, the Honorary Alumni Award and the Faculty Recognition Award.

Alumni Service Award

The 2019 Alumni Service Award was presented to Kevin Hammett ’90, president and chief executive officer of Regency Properties.  Hammett graduated from USI with a bachelor’s degree in accounting in 1990 and has spent his career giving back to the University with his time and expertise.  Since 2008, he has served as the chair of the USI Foundation Board of Directors (2016-2018), president of the Alumni Association (2010), chair of the Romain College of Business Board of Advisors (2016-2018), chair of the alumni division of Campaign USI – Elevating Excellence and as an alumni representative on the 2017-18 presidential search committee.

Hammett is a former member of the USI Varsity Club Board of Directors and the Accounting Circle and has served on steering committees to select members of the Board of Trustees and USI Distinguished Accountant Award recipients. Additionally, Hammett is a current board member for the Growth Alliance for Greater Evansville, Youth First, Inc., the EVSC Foundation and Buffalo Trace Council, Boy Scouts of America. He is a former board member for the Indiana State Chamber of Commerce and Patchwork Central, and a member of the Rotary Club of Evansville.

Honorary Alumni Award

Penny Goshert was recognized as the recipient of the 2019 Honorary Alumni Award for her dedication, service and passion for USI. As a volunteer, Goshert began her connection to USI through assistance with heart screenings for student athletes more than a decade ago. This interaction led to the beginning of her involvement with the Varsity Club, where she served as chair of the Board of Directors from 2017-18. Additionally, Goshert serves on the Society for Arts and Humanities Board of Directors and the planning committee for the annual Toast to the Arts fundraiser, and is a member of President’s Associates along with her husband, Mark.

Goshert currently serves as the outreach and access coordinator for Deaconess Hospital. She was instrumental in the launch of the HeartSaver program in 2014, in conjunction with Deaconess Foundation, which strives to place automated external defibrillators, or AEDs, throughout the Tri-state. She also serves as an advocate for the annual Go Red for Women luncheon, which is in part sponsored by The American Heart Association and Deaconess Hospital.

Faculty Recognition Award

Kathryn M. Waters, professor emerita of art, was the recipient of the 2019 Faculty Recognition Award. Since joining the USI faculty in 1981 through her retirement in 2019, Waters has served as chair of the Art Department, interim associate dean of the College of Liberal Arts, director of the McCutchan Art Center/Pace Galleries and interim chair of the Art and Design Department. As a practicing artist, Waters’s drawings and paintings appear in many corporate, university, museum and private collections and have been exhibited widely at the national and regional levels.

Waters is the recipient of the 2019 Mayor’s Art Award from the Arts Council of Southwestern Indiana, an Arts Midwest National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship in Painting, the Clowes Fellowship in Painting at the Vermont Studio Center and two Indiana Arts Commission Master Fellowships. She also has been selected for artist residencies at Yaddo, the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts, the Vermont Studio Center and the Ragdale Foundation. She was honored with the 2015 University of Southern Indiana’s Distinguished Professor Award and a Phenomenal Woman of USI Award.

Woman Arrested for Defrauding Grieving Family

0

The Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s Office has arrested an Evansville woman for defrauding a grieving family of over $18,000.00 meant to cover burial and memorial expenses for a deceased child. Caroline Marie Rich was arrested and charged with three counts of Fraud and three counts of Theft, all Level 6 felonies, following an investigation by the Sheriff’s Office.

On September 7, 2019, deputies were called to Alexander Memorial Park for a Fraud report. Detectives with the Sheriff’s Office began an investigation that revealed that Rich, a Family Service Counselor for Dignity Memorial/SCI Shared Resources which owns Alexander Memorial Park, had worked with the family of Oliver Dill, a child who passed away in July, on contracts involving the purchase of burial plots and headstones. The parents and grandparents of the child had paid a total of $19,273.00 for the plots and headstones. These payments had been made via PayPal money transfers to a PayPal account of Rich’s and personal checks made out to Rich with the belief that she would transfer the funds to Dignity Memorial. These monies were from both the victims’ personal accounts as well as a GoFundMe account set up for the Dill family to cover funeral expenses. A member of the Dill family had a personal friendship with Rich and assumed there was nothing suspicious about the payment arrangements.

The Dill family began receiving invoices indicating a substantial outstanding balance owed on the account and contacted the cemetery. It was their belief that everything had been paid in full and questioned the invoices. Dignity Memorial immediately began an internal investigation and discovered that their employee, Rich, had apparently kept all but $1,000.00 of the money paid by the Dills. That amount she had paid towards the balance using her personal bank account. Detectives with the Sheriff’s Office verified the money transfers had been made to Rich personally and that a total of $18,273.01 had apparently been stolen.

On today’s date, Rich came to the Operations Center with her attorney for an interview. Rich initially stated that she took the funds with the intention of helping the family but when detectives began questioning her story, she declined to speak further. Rich was arrested and taken to the Vanderburgh County Jail where she will be held without bond pending a court appearance.

Dignity Memorial has cooperated fully with the investigation and will refund an overage on the account charged by Rich as well as absorb the loss on the remaining balance.

ARRESTED:

Caroline Marie Rich (pictured above), 37, of Evansville. Fraud (3 counts) as a Level 6 Felony, Theft (3 counts) as a Level 6 Felony.

Presumption of Innocence Notice: The fact that a person has been arrested or charged with a crime is merely an accusation. The defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty in a court of law.

Driver Hospitalized after Crash on Big Cynthiana Road Overturns Box Truck

0

A crash this morning on Big Cynthiana Road in northern Vanderburgh County caused a box truck to overturn and resulted in one driver being transported to the hospital.

On Wednesday, September 11, 2019 at approximately 6:49 AM at State Road 65 (Big Cynthiana Road) and Nisbet Road the Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s Office responded to a vehicle crash involving a box truck and a Toyota Sequoia SUV. Responding deputies were advised that the occupant of the Sequoia was pinned inside with a serious leg injury.

Upon being extricated by the Scott Township Fire Department, the driver of the Sequoia was transported by ambulance to the Deaconess Hospital emergency room. On scene investigation and witness statements revealed that the Sequoia had been traveling south on SR 65 when it crossed the center line, striking the northbound box truck. The impact caused the box truck to overturn onto its side. The driver of the Sequoia admitted to deputies that he was traveling too fast and failed to negotiate a curve, causing him to strike the box truck.

Pursuant to state law regarding crashes involving serious bodily injury or death, both drivers consented to a post-crash blood draw. The crash will remain under investigation pending toxicology results, although alcohol is not currently suspected as having been a factor in the crash.

The driver of the box truck was not injured. SR 65 was shut down for a few hours while crews cleaned up the wreckage.

CORRECTION: A previous version of this article mistakenly omitted the word “not” from the sentence concerning alcohol being a factor in the crash.
