Men’s Swimming and Diving fall at home to Bellarmine

EVANSVILLE, Ind.- University of Southern Indiana Men’s Swimming and Diving fell to Bellarmine University 206-88 on Saturday afternoon at the USI Aquatic Center.

Junior Lane Pollock led the way for the Screaming Eagles, winning the three-meter dive with a score of 252.53. Sophomore Nathan Deputy (2:12.57) finished second.

The Eagles’ top swimming finisher was sophomore Cole Baker who placed second in the 100 backstroke with a time of 54.13. Freshman Luke Rich earned a second-place finish in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:12.57.

Rich (2:02.66) finished third in the 200-individual medley, right behind Rich junior Caleb Beaven (2:03.60) came in fourth.

Evansville, In.:  After falling behind 2-0 to the Huntsville Havoc in the first period, the Thunderbolts rallied back to tie the game and win in overtime, 3-2 at Ford Center on Saturday night.  The Thunderbolts’ next home game will be on Tuesday, October 29th against the Peoria Rivermen at 10:00am CT.
                Late first period goals from Noah Finstrom at 14:42 and Buster Larsson at 19:32 propelled the Havoc to a 2-0 lead through 20 minutes of play.  In the second period, Matthew Barnaby began the comeback as he scored at 3:38 on a wraparound to make it a 2-1 deficit, the goal coming on a power play, assisted by Scott Kirton and Anthony Hora.  At 17:23, Barnaby scored once again on a rebound from Joey Berkopec and Grayson Valente to tie the game at 2-2.  Following a scoreless third period, the game went to a very active overtime period, beginning with a successful Thunderbolts penalty kill that included an Evansville penalty shot attempt for Matthew Hobbs, which was saved by Havoc goaltender Brian Wilson.  At 3:59 however, the Thunderbolts pulled through to score the clinching goal as Brendan Harrogate scored unassisted with a steal at the net-front to win it for Evansville, 3-2.
Barnaby scored Evansville’s two regulation goals, with Harrogate scoring the overtime-winning goal.  In goal, Cole Ceci finished with 35 saves on 37 shots for his 1st win of the season.  The Thunderbolts and Havoc meet once again on Friday, November 1st at Ford Center.

Aces earn 86-60 exhibition win over Tiffin

Newcomers lead UE in the win

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – It was a trio of newcomers who led the way for the University of Evansville men’s basketball team as Gabriel Pozzato, Tayshawn Comer, and Connor Turnbull combined for 53 points in the Purple Aces’ 86-60 win over Tiffin on Saturday at the Ford Cetner.

Pozzato recorded a game-high 22 points on 8-of-11 shooting.  He converted four of his six long range tries.  Comer finished with 16 points while Turnbull finished the afternoon with 15.  Tanner Cuff took care of business on the glass, hauling in 12 boards.  Comer led the team with seven assists and three steals.

Over the opening minutes of the contest, it was all Aces as they jumped out to a 17-4 lead.  Tayshawn Comer, who converted three 3-point plays in the opening half, had his first in the early moments.

From that point, the Dragons found their rhythm as they outscored the Aces by a 17-13 margin to get within nine points in the final minutes at 30-21.  Connor Turnbull connected on a shot and Comer added two more 3-point plays in the final minutes as UE extended its lead back up to 14, taking a 42-28 lead into the break.

Evansville’s lead remained around 15 in the opening moments of the second half before the Aces were able to push the lead to 20.  Gabriel Pozzato knocked down a jumper before Joshua Hughes connected from downtown to make it a 54-34 game inside of 13 minutes remaining.

After Tiffin got back within 14 points at 64-50, the Aces put the finishing touches on the contest with a 15-0 run that put the score at 79-50 with 4:54 remaining.  UE held strong, cruising to the 86-60 victory.

Tiffin was led by Allen Fordham’s 11 points.  As a team, the Aces shot 50%, hitting 29 out of 58 tries while holding the Dragons to 38.6%.

Regular season play begins on Tuesday, Nov. 5 with a trip to North Texas.

McNamara statement on opening of one-of-a-kind welding program at Mount Vernon High School

Note to the Press – State Rep. Wendy McNamara (R-Evansville) issued the following statement regarding the opening of the John D. Haynes School of Welding Technology at Mount Vernon High School. BWX Technologies, Inc. (NYSE: BWXT) along with the U.S. Navy and BlueForge Alliance invested $500,000 in the facility, which can accommodate up to 60 students annually. The program offers students a dual-track opportunity to complete their high school degree while obtaining professional welding certification, leading to direct employment opportunities at BWXT’s Nuclear Operations Group. The initiative aims to address critical training needs for national defense priorities.

 

STATEHOUSE (Oct. 24, 2024) – “This new facility and the training program is an incredible opportunity for our local high school students who want to pursue a high-paying career in welding and hit the ground running upon graduation. It’s easy to see how this program, which offers state-of-the-art training technologies, will become a national blueprint for the rest of the country to follow, and it’s exciting to know our students – now and into the future – will reap the rewards.”

30 Hoosier artists strengthen careers, communities through fellowships from the Indiana Arts Commission

 (INDIANAPOLIS) Today, the Indiana Arts Commission (IAC) announced it has awarded $60,000 to 30 creative entrepreneurs to fund arts projects around the state through the agency’s On-Ramp Creative Entrepreneur Accelerator program. 

   

On-Ramp is a three-day accelerator course for Indiana-based creative entrepreneurs to foster their business skills, followed by the opportunity to apply for a $2,000 fellowship to put the learning into action. Each funded project will support the pursuit of a clearly defined business goal that also supports the entrepreneur’s community.    

   

“The On-Ramp 2024 cohort demonstrates the talent, skill, and entrepreneurial spirit that is on display in every corner of the Hoosier state,” said Jordan Adams, Artist Services Program Manager with the Indiana Arts Commission, “We are proud to support the growth of these entrepreneurs who are working to build a more vibrant Indiana.”

Marion Country resident Brandon Meeks, a bass player, will utilize fellowship funds to support and grow the “3rd Sunday Jazz Concerts Series”, which provides free, high-quality jazz performances that engage the community and inspire the next generation of jazz enthusiasts. Through this work, the artist will grow his professional network and broaden his portfolio.  

  

Christina Hollering, a visual artist from Boone County, will employ fellowship funds in the creation of a community mural focused on native Indiana herpetofauna. This project will enhance community engagement, foster collaboration with local experts, and promote the appreciation of local ecosystems. The project will help the artist reach her creative career goals by expanding her mural portfolio and honing her skills to attract new clients. 

 

The On-Ramp Creative Entrepreneur will pause for program evaluation in 2025, allowing the program to grow to better meet the needs of Indiana, as informed by the 2023-2024 Artist Needs Assessment. The Indiana Arts Commission has evaluated the results of the Artist Needs Assessment and is now ready to share findings and outline future programming and services for Indiana artists that is directly informed by the feedback. Join the IAC staff on Thursday, October 17th at 5PM ET for a presentation on the learnings and programmatic responses. Register to attend.  

 

 

Steve Bridges ’89, M’95 named 2024 Distinguished Accountant Award recipient

Steven J. Bridges ’89 M’95, USI Interim President, has been named the recipient of the 2024 University of Southern Indiana Romain College of Business Distinguished Accountant Award. The award was announced by Dr. Brian McGuire, Associate Dean of the Romain College of Business and Professor of Accounting.

Bridges began as USI’s Interim President in July 2024. He is a longtime USI employee, two-time USI alumnus and is the first alum to serve in this leadership position. Since April 2015, he has served as the Vice President for Finance and Administration, the University’s chief business and fiscal officer.

“The selection criteria for the Distinguished Accountant Award includes demonstrating substantial leadership, noteworthy stature in the accounting profession and significant involvement with USI and in the community,” said McGuire. “Mr. Bridges certainly exhibits all of these characteristics, and he is very deserving of this award.”

Bridges leads USI’s President’s Council and Cabinet, has served on USI’s Athletic Council and has chaired USI’s Data Standards and Banner Operations Committees. He serves on the WNIN Board of Directors, the Evansville Regional Economic Partnership Board, the Ohio Valley Conference Board of Presidents and as Chair of the Holy Name Church Parrish Council and member of the Church’s Finance Committee. He has also served as Treasurer and Board member of the Girl Scouts of Southwest Indiana, Chair of the Central Association of College and University Business Officers Audit Committee, President of the Ark Crisis Nursery Board and President of the Indiana Association of College and University Business Officers. In addition, he has been the recipient of numerous professional and community awards.

Receiving his bachelor’s degree in accounting from USI Fall 1988, he began working for the University the following spring as a Staff Accountant. He continued to progress in his career to Bursar, Chief Accountant, Controller and Assistant Business Office Director, Assistant and Associate Vice President and an interim appointment for Operations and Assistant Treasurer and was named Vice President for Finance and Administration in 2015. He earned his Master of Business Administration degree from USI in 1995.

The Distinguished Accountant Award has been given annually since 2004 by the USI Romain College of Business in conjunction with the USI Accounting Circle and recognizes professional achievement, service to the region and/or University and service to the accounting profession.
