Obituary for Brad Day

Brad Day, 55, of Evansville, passed away at his home on Wednesday, August 21, 2019. He was born October 22, 1963 in Evansville, to Walter Benton Day and Doris Turpin.

Brad was employed as a Safety Medic and Mechanic at Kuester Farms. He was a volunteer firefighter for over 30 years, serving with Scott, Perry and McCutchanville Townships. He was a member of Salem Church of Darmstadt.

Brad is survived by his wife, Jennifer Day, of 15 years; twin children, Logan and Kylee Day; father, Bennie (Tootie) Day and mother, Doris Turpin; brother, Jeffrey Allen (Kathy) Day; sisters, Mary “Cathy” (Dr. Eric) Cure and Pamela Sue Day; nieces and nephews; and great nieces and nephews

Visitation will be from 2:00 pm – 8:00 pm Sunday, August 25, 2019 at Ziemer Funeral Home North Chapel, 6300 N. First Ave., Evansville, 47710 where a memorial service will begin at 7:00 pm. Visitation will continue from 10:00 am to 11:00 am Monday, August 26, 2019 at the funeral home. The funeral service will begin at 11:00 am with Pastor David Peterson officiating.

Burial will be at St. Joseph Cemetery, 2500 Mesker Park Dr., Evansville, 47720.

Mary H. Heumann, 81, formerly of Evansville, IN passed away peacefully in Bloomington, IN on Saturday, August 17, 2019. Mary was born on December 21, 1937 in Evansville, IN to the late Chuck and Hester Holsclaw.
Mary attended Bosse High School and graduated from Indiana University with a degree in Elementary Education. She married John C. Heumann, MD in 1959. They were married for 57 years until John’s death in 2016.
Mary was active in many volunteer capacities while raising her 3 children. She also loved reading, sewing, travel and spending time with her children and grandchildren.
Mary was always kind and gentle. She welcomed everyone with an open mind, open arms and open heart. She touched many lives in very positive ways and that will truly be missed.
Mary is survived by her daughter, Gayle (Pete) Allesee and their children Matt, Chris (Kelley) and Sam (Ayesha); son, John (Michele) Heumann and their children Eric and Jessica; son, Greg (Sara) Heumann, MD and their children, Kellie, Ryan, Rachel, Carson, Cooper and Madi and Coleman Oliphant; great grandchildren, Emery, Julia and Zayn Allesee; sister, Ann Partridge of Indianapolis, IN; sister-in-law, Jean Hodge of St. Joseph, MI; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years in 2016, Dr. John Heumann and brother-in-law, Don Partridge.
Visitation will be from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm Saturday, August 24, 2019 at Ziemer Funeral Home East Chapel, 800 S. Hebron Ave., Evansville. Funeral service will begin at 1:00 pm at the funeral home.

David A. Kapp, 55, of Newburgh, passed away Tuesday, August 20, 2019 at his home. He was born on December 28, 1963 to the late Robert and Mary (Bonifer) Kapp.

David graduated from Harrison High School in 1981. He attended Indiana University and graduated with degrees in Accounting and Business from the University of Southern Indiana. He was a member of Good Shepherd Catholic Church. David served on the Advisory Board of U of E for several years. He enjoyed various woodworking projects and enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren, boating on Lake Barkley. David also enjoyed traveling with family, friends and coworkers.

David’s 39 year career with Shoe Carnival started in 1980 as a Store Sales Associate. Following graduation from USI, he was promoted to Director of Accounting. David was promoted to Co-Controller, then to Director of Merchandise in Accounting and additional career promotions include Assistant Vice President of Merchandise Accounting, VP of Treasury Management/Secretary, VP of Inventory Management, VP of Planning, VP Merchandise Manager-Stores, VP of Planning and Analysis, and SVP of Planning and Allocation.

David is survived by his wife, Catherine (Hertel) of 36 years; his sons, Matthew A. (Katelyn Ross) Kapp and Michael R. Kapp; daughters, Christina M. (Kellan) Scherry and Laura E. Kapp; grandchildren, Jemma Pullum-Kapp and Colt Kapp; brothers, Richard (Sabrina) Kapp, Kevin (Serena) Kapp and Steve Kapp; and Kapp nieces and nephews, Jennifer, Joseph, Ryan and Raechel.

David was preceded in death by his parents.

Visitation will be from 3:00 pm to 8:00 pm, Friday, August 23, 2019 at Ziemer Funeral Home East Chapel, 800 S. Hebron Ave., Evansville, 47714. Visitation will continue from 9:00 am -10:00 am on Saturday, August 24, 2019 at Good Shepherd Catholic Church, 2301 N. Stockwell Rd., Evansville, IN 47715. A Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 10:00 am at Good Shepherd with Father Zach Etienne officiating.

Burial will be at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, 2500 Mesker Park Drive, Evansville, IN 47720.

Obituary for Donald C. Buente

Donald C. Buente, age 55, passed away on Monday, August 12, 2019 at his home.

Don was a graduate of FJ Reitz High School and Purdue University. Don was a horticulturist and enjoyed many years with his brother at Buente Greenhouses & Landscaping. Don enjoyed spending time with his buddies and relaxing with his dog by his side. He was a life member of the River Bend Association, and he held membership with the Sons of The American Legion Funkhouser Post #8 and the Fraternal Order of Eagles.

Don is preceded in death by his parents, Adolph “Junior” Buente and Freda Buente, as well as his brother Curt Buente. Don is survived by his niece, Mary (Marybeth) Buente Fritz and husband Tyler Fritz, and many extended family members.

Funeral services for Don will be held at 1:00 PM on Saturday, August 17, 2019 at Pierre Funeral Home, Rev. Terry Gamblin officiating. Burial will follow in Tupman Cemetery.

Family will welcome friends to a visitation on Saturday at Pierre Funeral Home, 2601 West Franklin Street, Evansville, IN 47712 from 11:00 AM until the funeral service at 1:00 PM.

Obituary for Dorothy Niehaus

Dorothy “Dottie” Niehaus, 89, of Mt. Vernon, IN passed away peacefully on Friday, August 9, 2019 at the West River Health Campus.

Dorothy was born January 17, 1930 in Mt. Vernon, IN to the late William and Christene (Renschler) Uebelhack. She graduated from Mt. Vernon High School and soon after went to work at the Posey County Bank in Mt. Vernon. She and her late husband, Earl E. Niehaus, were married in 1951. Earl was without a doubt the love of her life. Dorothy devoted her life to being a Christian, a homemaker and a mother. She and Earl celebrated 60 years of marriage before his death in 2011.

Surviving Dorothy are her two children, Marcia (Phillip) Tyson of Canton, GA and Michael Niehaus of Evansville; three grandchildren, Carly Niehaus, Addison (Daniel) Gomez and Carter Niehaus; a great grandson, Gideon Gomez and a sister, Esther (Paul) Saltzman of Mt. Vernon.

In addition to her parents and husband, Dorothy was preceded in death by twin sisters, Irene (Bob) Oeth and Lorene (Max) Mahrenholz.

Dorothy especially enjoyed cooking and was a member of Today’s Home Economics Club for many years. She was awarded the Homemaker of the Year Award by the Posey County Home Extension Office. Dorothy was a past member of the Posey County Rural Youth Organization, Business & Professional Women Organization and Epsilon Alpha Sorority. She was a member of Zion Lippe United Church of Christ, where she taught Sunday School for 40 years and was a 30-year member of the Women’s Guild at Zion and Evansville Tri-State Women’s UCC Association. Dorothy was a spiritual woman and was involved in many church activities over the years. She was active in the Marrs School Burgoo, Marrs School PTA and was a Marrs School homeroom mother for both of her children. She and Earl enjoyed many Saturday nights dancing with their friends. In later years, she enjoyed watching the St. Louis Cardinals on television. Dorothy will be greatly missed by her family, friends and all who knew her.

Funeral services for Dorothy will be held at 10:00 AM on Tuesday, August 13, 2019 at Zion Lippe UCC, Rev. Jeff Long officiating. Burial will follow in the Zion Lippe Church cemetery.

Friends may visit with the family from 3:00 until 7:00 PM on Monday at Pierre Funeral Home, 2601 W. Franklin Street.

Obituary for Joseph H. Effinger

Joseph H. Effinger, age 95, of Wadesville, passed away Friday, August 9, 2019 at The Terrace at Solarbron. He was born on April 23, 1924 to Aloysius and Gertrude (Brandsasse) Effinger in Evansville, Indiana.

A World War II veteran, Mr. Effinger served with an artillery unit in the European theatre including the Battle of the Bulge. He married the love of his life, Cecile Gully, of Mulhouse, France on November 15, 1947. Their seven children meant the world to him. They include: Gilbert (Bonnie), Dan (Liz), Margie (Jim) Tomes, Patty (Bill) Scruggs, Joseph (Cindy) Effinger, Mark (Angel) and Tom, who died in 1985. Joseph is also survived by 15 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren, plus step grandchildren and step great grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, Joe was preceded in death by his wife of 68 years, Cecile; by his son, Tom, and by his only brother, Aloysius, who was killed in Okinawa during World War II.

Mr. Effinger was a life member of Wadesville VFW Post 6576. He was also a member of St. Wendel Catholic Church, the St. Wendel Knights of St. John and the St. Vincent de Paul Society. He was a farmer and also worked at and retired from George Koch and Sons.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, August 13, 2019 at St. Wendel Catholic Church, Rev. Ed Schnur officiating. Burial will follow in St. Wendel Church Cemetery, where the Vanderburgh County Retired Veterans Memorial Club will conduct military rites.

Friends may visit with the family from 2:00 until 8:00 PM on Monday at Pierre Funeral Home, 2601 W. Franklin Street and from 10:00 AM until service time on Tuesday at St. Wendel Catholic Church.
