INDIANAPOLIS – So, it seems that negotiation and diplomacy by temper tantrum aren’t that effective.
Who could have guessed that?
In the past few days, President Donald Trump continued his practice of picking fights with America’s friends and appeasing America’s enemies. He did so in ways and for reasons that only would have made sense in “Alice in Wonderland,†where up is down and down is up.
The president started his bewildering run of brouhahas by musing, out loud, that he might be interested in acquiring Greenland from Denmark.
Denmark President Mette Frederiksen responded to Trump’s out-loud thought bubble by saying it was “an absurd discussion†because the days are over in which people and countries are bought and sold, and Denmark doesn’t own Greenland, anyway.
Trump being Trump, responded with a snit.
He was scheduled to visit Denmark at the beginning of September. He canceled the trip, saying Frederiksen was “nasty†for dismissing his idea in the way she did. She should have been more respectful.
Hmmm.
Maybe it would have been easier for Frederiksen to do that if he had sounded her out in private – say, in a face-to-face meeting at the beginning of September – rather than blurting his half-thought-out notion in front of a bunch of cameras and microphones. Then she, privately, could have explained what the obstacles might be.
And no one would have been embarrassed.
But Trump didn’t do that.
Instead, he made a public statement.
That forced Frederiksen to respond in public.
Trump got his feelings hurt.
Now, we have a strain in what has been a friendly relationship – a strain that could have been avoided so easily if the president had demonstrated a bare minimum of self-discipline and emotional maturity.
Worse, there seems to be a domino effect.
Just after Trump cancelled the Denmark trip, Iceland’s prime minister, Katrin Jakobsdottir, said she wouldn’t meet with Vice President Mike Pence when he visited her country. Instead, she will give a speech at a conference in Sweden.
Jakobsdottir insisted the decision not to meet with Pence wasn’t a “snub,†but Icelandic historians said it was unprecedented.
Pence’s visit to Iceland is scheduled for Sept. 4.
Trump was scheduled to be in Denmark Sept. 2 and 3.
Jakobsdottir’s speech is scheduled for Sept. 3, but she plans to linger at the conference to talk with attendees some more.
Pence’s visit would have been the first by a U.S. vice president to Iceland since 1983.
But Jakobsdottir isn’t trying to make a statement or send a signal.
Not a chance.
Then there is President Trump’s attempt to get Russia reinstated as part of the G-7, which was called the G-8 before the Russians were thrown out.
The Russians were booted because they invaded the Ukraine in 2014. They’ve since made no attempts to resolve the situation or deal with the concerns of the other nations in the G-7.
Well, all the other nations but the United States, where the president seems to be in thrall to Russian leader Vladimir Putin for some reason.
The reaction of the leaders of the other nations in the G-7 to Trump’s proposal would have to heat up considerably to be considered frigid. They have pointed out that Russia should have to do something to make amends for invading Ukraine before the idea of readmission to the G-7 even should be entertained, much less acted upon.
Trump apparently doesn’t see it that way.
Maybe a guy who muses aloud about buying and selling nations and human beings just doesn’t see invading other countries and murdering the people there as that big a deal.
But the leaders of other nations do see it as a big deal.
Most of the signs suggest that they’re getting tired of dealing with this U.S. president’s immaturity.
They want to deal with an adult.
And soon.

EPA Seeks Public Input On 20 High-Priority Chemical Substances Proposal
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is meeting another statutory requirement under the 2016 amendments to the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA) by proposing to designate 20 chemical substances as High-Priority Substances for upcoming risk evaluations. The proposed designation is a required step in a new process of reviewing chemical substances currently in commerce under the amended TSCA.
“By proposing to prioritize 20 chemicals for risk evaluation, EPA is realizing another one of the key requirements of the Frank R. Lautenberg Chemical Safety for the 21st Century Act,†said Assistant Administrator for EPA’s Office of Chemical Safety and Pollution Prevention Alexandra Dapolito Dunn. “Taking public comment will help advance our understanding about how these chemicals are used in commerce and brings EPA one step closer to completing the prioritization process.â€
EPA is issuing designation documents for each chemical substance describing the chemical-specific information, analysis and basis EPA used to support the proposed designation. Today’s 20 proposed chemicals are the same the agency identified in March as potential High-Priority Substances. The agency is asking stakeholders and the public to submit comments by November 21, 2019
The 20 proposed high-priority candidate chemicals include seven chlorinated solvents, six phthalates, four flame retardants, formaldehyde, a fragrance additive, and a polymer precursor.
EPA is required to complete the prioritization process and make final designations for 20 High-Priority Substances by December 2019. Finalizing these designations will begin the three-year risk evaluation process to determine if they present an unreasonable risk to health or the environment under the conditions of use. If the agency determines any substance presents an unreasonable risk, it is required under TSCA to undertake risk mitigation – a regulatory action.
Last week, EPA designated another 20 chemicals as Low-Priority Substances as part of the prioritization process. A low-priority designation, when final, means these substances do not require risk evaluation at this time in EPA’s determination.
The Farmer’s Daughter Restaurant BY PAT SIDES
The Farmer’s Daughter restaurant is wedged between National City Bank and the Vendome Hotel in this image of Third Street near Main.
The photo was probably taken soon after the restaurant began operating in 1962. Around that time the façade of the historic building was stuccoed, which covered windows and other features it had displayed since the building opened as the Washington Hotel in 1855.
The eatery’s “down on the farm cookin’†was an instant hit, and before its long run ended thirty years later, the Farmer’s Daughter established other locations on Green River Road, Highway 41 South, and near First Avenue and Mill Road.
After a recent extensive renovation, the Main street building now houses another restaurant.

We are pleased that we are in a position to help grieving family members during their time of need by publishing the obituaries of their loved ones at no costs.
With that being said, we would like to take a moment to thank the following local funeral homes that have helped make our vision possible:

PRESIDENT TRUMP SIGNS BRIDGE BILL! BY Dan Barton,
THE NEW-HARMONY GAZETTE.
The New Harmony Gazette was notified by Lora Arneberg on the evening of August 24th, that President Donald Trump has signed the legislation allowing the transfer of the title for the Harmony Way Bridge to the new Bi-State Bridge Authority.
This is a big step forward and removes many of the encumbrances of the old 1941 bill and moves the process of rehabilitating and opening the Harmony Way Bridge just that much closer. As it stands today, once Illinois has assigned trustees to their Illinois Authority, the Bi-State Authority can take title to the bridge from the current owner, the White County Bridge Commission. Once they have title to the bridge the Authority can then decide what the best use of the bridge will be and how they will finance the rehabilitation.
The Bridge Authority will have a public meeting at the New Harmony Town Hall on Wednesday, August 28th.
