Narcotics Investigation Leads to 2 Arrests and Numerous Felony Charges

In early October, Detectives with the Evansville-Vanderburgh County Drug Task Force developed probable cause that narcotics trafficking was being conducted from an apartment in  the 700 block of Cherry Street. The investigation involved 42-year-old Troy L. Ogburn Sr. and his involvement in the distribution of fentanyl, methamphetamine, cocaine, and marijuana.

After a lengthy investigation into Ogburn, a search warrant was issued for his residence on October 24th . The search yielded 1 lb. of Fentanyl; 3.3 lbs. of Methamphetamine; 35 grams of Cocaine; three firearms; two scales; and $6267 in US Currency. Ogburn was arrested and charged with Dealing Methamphetamine, Dealing Cocaine, Dealing Narcotic Drug, Dealing Marijuana, and Possession of a Firearm by a Serious Violent Felon.

Champagne S. Josenberger and their two young children were living in the residence with Ogburn. Josenberger was arrested and charged with Neglect of a Dependent for herinvolvement in the case.

Indy doctor’s medical license suspended following unlawful prescribing

Attorney General Todd Rokita secures suspension of Indy doctor’s medical license following unlawful prescribing and other violations

Attorney General Todd Rokita has secured a suspension of the medical license of an Indianapolis doctor charged with 114 counts of violating laws regulating his medical practice and controlled substance prescribing.

“Hoosier patients have the right to expect their doctors to put their safety and well-being at the top of the priority list,” Attorney General Rokita said. “When a physician performing surgery demonstrates reckless disregard for basic standards of care, he or she must be held accountable.”

On Oct. 24, the Medical Licensing Board suspended Dr. Scott Mimms’ license for a minimum of two years. Attorney General Rokita’s office filed an administrative complaint against Dr. Mimms with the board on April 24, 2024.

The Indiana Medical Licensing Board found that Dr. Mimms failed to exercise reasonable care and diligence; unlawfully prescribed Schedule II controlled substances for weight loss; and administered anesthesia in a facility without the proper accreditation to do so and without any additional providers trained in anesthesia present at the time of the surgeries.

Attorney General Rokita’s office investigates complaints against licensed professionals and entities across the state. They received the first consumer complaint against Dr. Mimms in August of 2022 — and 34 additional complaints thereafter.

USI Men’s Golf ends fall schedule finishing fourth at Bill Crabtree Invitational

OWENSBORO, Ky. – University of Southern Indiana Men’s Golf closed its fall schedule with a fourth-place finish in the Kentucky Wesleyan College Bill Crabtree Invitational at The Pearl Club in Owensboro, Kentucky.

USI shot a team score of 584 (285-299) over the two-day tournament. Junior Carter Goebel topped the scorecard for the Screaming Eagles with a 142 (71-71) for his highest finish of the fall in 11th place. Senior Jason Bannister also earned a top-15 finish for the fifth time this fall, scoring a 143 (70-73). Senior Sam Vertanen placed inside the top 25 for the fourth time this fall with a 146 (69-77).

Round 1
USI opened the invitational with a 285 in the first round, ending the first day in second place. Vertanen led the Eagles with an impressive three-under round of 69, the best round in the tournament for any USI golfer.

Bannister also had an admirable first-round performance of 70 (-2) with Goebel one stroke back at one under par. Goebel notched an eagle on the par-five 11th hole.

Round 2
The Eagles regressed a bit on the second day, shooting 299 as a team and falling to fourth place.

Freshman Alex Peck was the lone USI golfer to improve on a first-round score. Going from 80 (+8) on the first day to 79 (+7) on the second.

Up Next
USI is slated to return to action in the spring on March 14 in a rematch against the University of Evansville. The two teams faced each other in match play this fall with the Aces taking the victory, 7.5-2.5.

Graftons take home OVC Player of the Week honors

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – University of Southern Indiana Women’s Soccer junior sisters Emerson Grafton and Charli Grafton earned Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Week honors on Tuesday. Emerson was named OVC co-Offensive Player of the Week and Charli was named OVC Defensive Player of the Week for the second time this season.

The Graftons helped lead Southern Indiana to a 3-0 home win against Western Illinois University on Sunday to conclude the regular season. With the win, USI grabbed its fourth consecutive positive result and secured the No. 4 seed in the OVC tournament.

Emerson Grafton picked up her first OVC weekly honor after playing a crucial role on the attacking end in Sunday’s victory. Grafton tallied a goal and an assist against the Leathernecks while also placing three of four shots on goal. Grafton’s assist led to USI’s second goal of the match in the 56th minute by junior midfielder Peyton Murphy. Grafton’s score came in the 84th minute off a give-and-go pattern with freshman midfielder Ana Munyon. Following Sunday’s performance, Grafton moved into the team lead in goals (3), assists (6), points (12), and shots on goal (14), while jumping to second in the conference in assists.

Charli Grafton was strong once again as USI’s centerback anchor against Western Illinois. Grafton made several key tackles and stops in helping the Eagles record their fourth shutout of the season and third clean sheet in the last four matches of the regular season. Grafton and the USI defense held Western Illinois to one shot in the first half and blocked multiple attempts in the second half. Grafton played another full 90 minutes, doing so for the 16th time this season and 13th consecutive contest.

The Graftons and Southern Indiana (5-8-5, 4-2-3 OVC) will host a first-round and quarterfinal match of the OVC Championship Tournament later this week as the No. 4 seed. USI has a first-round bye and awaits the winner on Sunday, November 3, of the first-round 5/8 matchup between Morehead State University and the University of Tennessee at Martin on Thursday, October 31. Both days are slated for 1 p.m. kickoffs from Strassweg Field.

THUNDERBOLTS HOST RECORD CROWD FOR ANNUAL EDUCATION DAY GAME

 

Evansville, In.:  For the second-straight season, the Thunderbolts broke their single-game attendance record for this year’s Education Day game, welcoming 7,758 fans to Ford Center on Tuesday morning, putting on an exciting show of a game and making the day a net positive despite falling 5-2 to the Peoria Rivermen.  The Thunderbolts’ next home game will be on Friday, November 1st against the Huntsville Havoc at 7:00pm CT.

The Thunderbolts broke through first as Tyson Gilmour snuck a shot into the net from Vili Vesalainen and Derek Contesa at 16:43 of the first period to give Evansville a 1-0 lead after one period.  Peoria struck with two quick goals in the second period, as Mike Gelatt scored at 5:03 and Tyler Kobryn at 8:20 to give Peoria a 2-1 lead.  Evansville rallied to tie the game once again at 2-2, as Brendan Harrogate scored from Scott Kirton and Grayson Valente at 10:47, before the Rivermen retook the lead at 13:37 on a goal from Alex Koopmeiners to make it 3-2 Peoria.  The Thunderbolts threatened to tie again in the third period, but could not find a third goal, while Peoria added two late goals from Gelatt and Josh Martin to put the relatively-close game out of reach near the very end.

Gilmour and Harrogate scored Evansville’s goals, while Cole Ceci finished with 28 saves on 33 shots.  The Thunderbolts and Rivermen meet once again on Friday, November 8th at Peoria Civic Center.

Brenner earns final MVC Freshman of the Week

The freshman defender earns the final weekly award of the 2024 season
EVANSVILLE, Ind. – Freshman defender Emmy Brenner (Arlington, Tenn. / St. Benedict at Auburndale HS) has been named the Missouri Valley Conference Freshman of the Week.
With the game-winning goal against the Southern Illinois Salukis, Brenner earned her second weekly honor in her first collegiate season. MVC Conference office staff decide on the MVC Freshman of the Week and other weekly accolades. Brenner’s first Freshman of the Week Honor came at the beginning of the month as she bookends the month of October.
In the Aces’ final game of the 2024 season, Brenner continued her strong conference performance with her third goal of the year. In the 40th minute of Sunday’s game against Southern Illinois UE was awarded a corner kick following the Salukis kicking the ball out past the goal. On the corner from sophomore midfielder Ashlyn Koutsos (Cumming, Ga. / West Forsyth HS), Brenner headed the ball from the six into the middle of the net.
Along with the goal, Brenner had Evansville’s only shot on goal in the match that didn’t result in a score. In the 86th minute, Brenner took an attempt from just outside the right corner of the penalty area. The shot sailed to the middle of the net where the Salukis goalkeeper made a grabbing save.
With a goal on Sunday Brenner became the Aces’ leading scorer along with sophomore forward Taylor Johnson (Evansville, Ind. / Reitz HS). Both players have three goals on the season for six points behind UE’s leading offensive player senior forward Hailey Autenrieb (Cincinnati / Seton HS). Brenner also had the third most shot attempts on the roster with 16 tries while nine landed on goal for a shot accuracy of 56.3%.
Evansville ended their season Sunday with a 2-0 win over SIU. The Aces’ overall record ended at 2-7-7 with a conference record of 1-4-5.

USI closes regular season with win, secures No. 4 seed in OVC tournament

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – University of Southern Indiana Women’s Soccer secured a 3-0 victory against Western Illinois University Sunday afternoon at Strassweg Field to conclude the regular season. The win was USI’s fourth straight positive result and third win in the last four matches.
 
Southern Indiana (5-8-5, 4-2-3 OVC) entered Sunday having already clinched an Ohio Valley Conference postseason berth for the third time. With Sunday’s win and results elsewhere around the OVC, USI claimed the No. 4 seed in the 2024 OVC Championship Tournament for the second consecutive season. The Screaming Eagles earned a first-round bye and the right to host a first-round match and their quarterfinal contest just as they did a season ago.
 
Before Sunday’s kickoff, the afternoon began with Senior Day ceremonies for USI Women’s Soccer. USI celebrated goalkeeper Zoe Lintner, midfielder Maggie Duggan, midfielder Adriana Berruti, defender Sophia Finol, defender Brooke Coleman, and manager Maddy Baum.
 
Once the game was underway, Southern Indiana jumped onto the scoreboard for a 1-0 lead in the sixth minute when a lengthy service from junior midfielder Peyton Murphy was inadvertently kicked into the net by a Western Illinois defender.
 
USI ramped up the pressure in the middle of the first half. Two shots on goal by junior midfielder Emerson Grafton and freshman midfielder Emma Schut were punched away by Western Illinois’ goalkeeper.
 
The Screaming Eagles kept the ball pinned into the attacking half for most of the first half, as Western Illinois came out of the opening 45 minutes with only one shot compared to USI’s nine attempts. USI maintained its 1-0 advantage into halftime.
 
Western Illinois moved down the field with a few shots early out of the break, but Southern Indiana added a second goal in the 56th minute. Murphy punched in her second goal of the season off a couple of passes from Grafton and sophomore midfielder Kerigan Kivisto.
 
While Western Illinois created more chances in the second half, including a shot that forced USI redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Anna Markland to make her only save of the game, Southern Indiana continued to assert its pressure. The Screaming Eagles added an insurance goal in the 84th minute when Grafton combined with freshman midfielder Ana Munyon on a give-and-go pattern to increase USI’s lead to 3-0 and seal the victory.
 
Southern Indiana generated 21 shots with eight on goal on Sunday. The Leathernecks tallied nine attempts with one on target. Grafton led the Eagles with four shots and three on goal. With a goal and an assist on Sunday, Grafton moved into the team lead for goals, assists and points. Grafton also jumped to second in the OVC in assists. Redshirt freshman forward Eva Boer also had four shots Sunday afternoon, while Murphy finished with two shots including the one into the net.
 
Through the end of the regular season, the Screaming Eagles set new program highs in the Division I era for OVC wins (4) and points (15) in addition to 19 goals scored overall this season.
 
Western Illinois dropped to 1-14-1 and 1-7-1 in the OVC with Sunday’s loss, missing out on the OVC tournament alongside Southern Illinois University Edwardsville.
 
Tennessee Tech University captured the top spot in the OVC Championship field after winning its third consecutive regular-season championship. The University of Arkansas at Little Rock earned the No. 2 seed, joining Tennessee Tech with a double-bye into the semifinals. Lindenwood University finished as the No. 3 seed as the other first-weekend host with USI. The rest of the field ended up with Morehead State University as the 5-seed, Eastern Illinois University as the 6-seed, Southeast Missouri State University as the 7-seed, and the University of Tennessee at Martin as the 8-seed.
 
For the Screaming Eagles, USI will host and await the winner on Sunday, November 3, of the first-round 5/8 matchup between Morehead State and UT Martin on Thursday, October 31. Both days are slated for 1 p.m. kickoffs from Strassweg Field. The semifinals and championship are scheduled for November 7 and 10, respectively, at Tennessee Tech.
