Crouch Awards Historic Renovation Grants

(AP Development LLC is awarded $100,000 to transform the YMCA Evansville into 62 units of affordable housing called Central Lofts)

INDIANAPOLIS (Sept. 10, 2019) – Yesterday, Lt. Governor Suzanne Crouch and the Indiana Office of Community and Rural Affairs announced that seven properties will receive funding through the Historic Renovation Grant Program.

“Maintaining Indiana’s historic fabric and character is vital to growing the state’s economy and attracting talent,” said Crouch. “Preservation efforts like the Historic Renovation Grant Program can ensure a future for vacant or neglected commercial properties that might otherwise be lost.”

The Historic Renovation Grant Program, in its third year, is a comprehensive grant program designed to preserve and rehabilitate historic properties in order to further incentivize downtown economic development. The funding for this year has been exhausted through the projects listed below and the program is now suspended until more funding is allocated next legislative session.

“Restoring and protecting these historic sites help these communities attract visitors and grow their local economy,” said Jodi Golden, Executive Director of OCRA. “We are excited this grant is helping our rural communities continue to thrive while preserving a piece of Indiana history.”

Each property received funding for the renovation and preservation of exterior features. Such renovations include roof replacement, masonry restoration, repair and replacement of windows, façade renovation and/or chimney improvements.

Grant recipients:

  • Derek and Christine May are awarded $83,200 to restore a historic barn in the City of Attica. Behind the 1865 Italianate style home, the family added a barn in 1910 for horses. The rebuilt barn and part of the repaired home are planned to be an event venue for a variety of events including weddings, historic tours, community luncheons and more.
  • AP Backstay Lofts LLC is awarded $100,000 to complete the renovation and restoration of the historic Backstay Welt building into Back Stay Lofts in downtown Union City. The project will restore the building shell and façade, relocation of an elevator and the construction of 50 apartments. The building will have more than 5,000 square feet of community space for WorkOne, Frank Miller Lumber Training Center and the City of Union City.
  • Ann Knebel is awarded $11,175 to preserve the Peter Muller House in the Town of Ferdinand. Built between 1865 and 1870, this Georgian, Italianate house has been transformed into a mixed-use property with half being occupied by a nonprofit organization, Traditional Arts Today, Inc, and the remainder is residential.
  • James Buckingham is awarded $17,994 to preserve 418 East Line in the Town of Geneva. The building was built in 1895 after the majority of the town was destroyed by fire. The current owners purchased the building in 2018 to restore the facade to its original state and open an antique store, Limberlost Antiquities.
  • Morgan Building and Land is awarded $32,200 to renovate 419 Main Street in downtown Lafayette. The building was constructed between 1863 and 1869, by Granville H. Hull. The building will have both commercial and resident use once the renovation is complete.
  • AP BenHur LLC is awarded $100,000 to rehabilitate the Ben-Hur Hotel in downtown Crawfordsville.  Built-in 1912/1913, AP Development will be re-developing the building as a 57 room boutique hotel, with 10 apartments on the top floor and a restaurant, retail and hotel offices on the first floor.
  • AP Development LLC is awarded $100,000 to transform the YMCA Evansville into 62 units of affordable housing called Central Lofts. The building was built in 1913 and was designed by Shopbell & Company, who was a preeminent architect in Vanderburgh County in the early 1900s. The building boasts unique architectural features, most prominently the three-story gymnasium with a two-level walking track and spiral staircases.

Starting in the fiscal year 2020-21, two funding pools will be available for applications. $400,000 will be available to fund projects requesting more than $50,000 and $200,000 will be available to fund projects requesting less than $50,000.

Eligible applicants include non-profits, individual, partnership, firm, association, joint venture, limited liability company, corporation or non-profit affordable housing organization. Applicants with an eligible historic commercial structure have the opportunity to apply for project funding between $5,000 and $100,000 at a maximum request of 50 percent of the total eligible project cost. College planning help available Sept. 12 (from Sept. 6 News Email)
As a mother preparing my children for college, I know firsthand how important financial aid is to help students go to school. Students and parents interested in learning about financial aid opportunities should attend a meeting with INvestEd at 6:30 p.m. on Sept. 12 at New Tech High School. INvestEd will present information on the types of financial aid available including aid from federal and state governments, as well as institutions.  You can also learn about key sections of the Free Application for Federal Student Aid form, which is the starting point to financial assistance for all students.
For over 35 years, the goal of INvestEd has been to provide students with solutions to put higher education within reach. Providing affordable choices to Hoosier students before college is the best way to limit excessive debt after college.

Miley is a 3-year-old female calico cat. She’s been waiting on a home since March, and the reason is because she’s quite shy. In a loud, busy room full of visitors, you will find Miley hiding in the comfort of a cubby hole. But one-on-one, once you have her snuggled on your lap in a quiet setting, she’s your best friend! Miley’s adoption fee is normally $40, or only $20 through September 14th. She is already spayed, microchipped, and vaccinated – move-in ready. USI hosts McKendree to kick-off GLVC campaign

0

The University of Southern Indiana women’s soccer team begins the defense of its share of the 2018 GLVC regular season title Sunday when it hosts McKendree University at Strassweg Field. Match time is scheduled for noon and coverage can be found on GoUSIEagles.com.

This Sunday’s USI men’s and women’s soccer games will be played in honor of Oliver “Ollie” Dill, a child of the USI Family who tragically lost his life this past summer. All ticket proceeds will be donated to a selected charity in Ollie’s name.

USI’s first homestand of the season extends through September 20 when the University of Indianapolis visits Strassweg Field for a 5 p.m. match-up.

Week 1 Eagle Notes:

The 2018 Crown: The Eagles and the Bearcats of McKendree shared the 2018 GLVC regular season crown with Truman State University at the end of last season. The share of the GLVC regular season title was a first in program history for USI.

USI starts 2019 with two wins: USI won its opening games of the season, posting a 5-0 win over Purdue University Northwest at home and a 4-0 victory on the road at Walsh University.

Unbeaten Streak Extended: USI extended its unbeaten streak to 10 matches after starting the year with a pair of wins. The Eagles finished last season with seven-straight wins, tying a school record, and a tie in the GLVC Tournament with Rockhurst University (Rockhurst advanced over USI in the GLVC Tournament due to penalty kicks).

Winter named GLVC Player of the Week: USI junior forward Maggie Winter was named the GLVC Offensive Player of the Week after leading the team with seven points in two matches on three goals and one assist. Winter had a goal in the win over Purdue Northwest and a pair of goals and an assist in the victory at Walsh.

Climbing the record book: Junior forward Maggie Winter is starting to climb the USI record book categories, moving into the top 10 in points (37) and remaining 11th in goals scored (14), one away from entering the top 10.

Schoenstein enters his 4th year: USI Head Coach Eric Schoenstein is in his fourth season as the head coach of the Eagles, producing a 31-19-7 mark (.605), a share of a GLVC regular season title, and three-straight GLVC Tournament appearances.

USI vs. McKendree: McKendree leads the all-time series, 9-5-1, after winning the regular season match last fall, 2-1, in double overtime. The Bearcats also have won the last five regular season meetings.

McKendree in 2019:  The Bearcats split their opening weekend at home, defeating Kentucky Wesleyan College, 3-2, and falling to Ohio Dominican University, 1-0.

USI vs. Indianapolis: The Greyhounds lead the all-time series with the Eagles, 12-11-1, despite USI winning on the road last year in overtime, 3-2. The Eagles and the Greyhounds have split the last five games with two wins each and a tie.

UIndy in 2019:  UIndy, who host Bellarmine University Sunday before visiting USI on September 20, won its first two matches in convincing fashion. The Greyhounds defeated the University of Wisconsin Parkside, 4-1, and Purdue Northwest, 4-0, on the road during the opening weekend.
