“IS IT TRUE” SEPTEMBER 4, 2019

1

We hope that today’s “IS IT TRUE” will provoke honest and open dialogue concerning issues that we, as responsible citizens of this community, need to address in a rational and responsible way?

IS IT TRUE that sometime in October 2019 an announcement will be made by the Vanderburgh County officials that they have agreed to renovate the County jail? …we are told that the newly renovated jail will meet our needs for at least 25 years?

IS IT TRUE are told that a few Republican “SPIN DOCTORS” are predicting that the City Council Ward Three (3) and Ward Two (2) winners will be Republicans?  …we are told that some of these same people also predicted that President Trump and the United States Senator Mike Braun would both lose the Republican primary?

IS IT TRUE that its common knowledge that political candidates with name recognition generally do very well at the ballot box?

IS IT TRUE we wonder if its Kosher for a political candidate to spend their campaign funds on baby sitting services?

IS IT TRUE we been told that several local movers and shakers would like to turn the Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Coliseum in downtown Evansville into a Military Museum?

IS IT TRUE we give five (5) cheers to the University of Southern Indiana, through its University Archives and Special Collections for partnering with the Vanderburgh County Commissioners, Veterans Council of Vanderburgh County, and the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War to preserve historical materials currently housed in the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) Room of the Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Coliseum in downtown Evansville?

IS IT TRUE  we are told that a few of the mainstream media elitists are  degrading the City-County Observer?  …all we can say about this is that we are proud to be a home owned community publication and thats more then they can say?

IS IT TRUE we find it interesting that several candidates for the Evansville City Council are telling potential voters that if they are elected they will be the  “Taxpayers Watchdog”?  …if City Council candidates really want to prove that they have the capacity of being a “Taxpayers Watchdog” they should publicly request that the City Controller provide then with a complete and accurate accounting on how much has the City invested in the Evansville Thunderbolts since it beginning?

IS IT TRUE we wonder if anyone knows anything about the current status of the old CVS building located on North Main Street?

IS IT TRUE a CCO staff member recently had lunch at the GANGNAM restaurant in downtown-Evansville and she really enjoyed the delicious food, liked the friendly staff and menu offerings?

IS IT TRUE that in Indiana gamblers must be 21 or older in order to place a bet in a “Sportsbook” facility?   …that Indiana gaming law allows casinos to take wagers on dozens of professional, collegiate and international events, including football, basketball, baseball, auto racing, hockey, soccer, boxing, golf, and Olympic competitions. No betting is allowed on high school or youth sporting events, or e-sports?

IS IT TRUE we give five (5) cheers to The Evansville DMD And Evansville African American Museum for creating and dedicating an African American Heritage Trail?

IS IT TRUE  that a loyal reader of the City-County Observer takes Rosuvastatin (generic for Crestor) on a daily basis?  …without insurance or government assistance this medicine would have cost him $677.25 dollars to fill? …he uses the GOOD RX APP. at a local pharmacy and paid only $22.18 for a three month supply of this prescription?  …we highly recommend that you Google the Good Rx App because you will save big bucks on your future prescriptions order?

IS IT TRUE that so far 108 people have contacted the Chairman of the  “Working Outside The Box” speaker series sponsored by the City-County Observer?  …that we have only 50 available seats for this extremely popular event?

Todays “Readers Poll” question Is: Do you feel that the Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Coliseum in downtown Evansville should be turned into a Military Museum?
Please take time and read our articles entitled “STATEHOUSE Files, Local OBITITARIES, LAW ENFORCEMENT, READERS POLL, BIRTHDAYS, HOT JOBS” and “LOCAL SPORTS”.

The Screaming Eagles face Winona State University and the University of Charleston on Friday before returning to the UIS TRAC on Saturday to face the host Prairie Stars in non-conference action.

Coverage of USI Volleyball can be found at GoUSIEagles.com

Season-Opening Notes:

Senior Leadership: The Eagles embark on the 2019 campaign with five seniors in tow: middle hitter Elexis Coleman, defensive specialist Lizzy Gardner, libero/outside hitter Mikaila Humphrey, middle blocker/right-side hitter Amanda Jung and outside hitter Lindsey Stone. The group has combined to play in 332 matches across a combined 14 seasons of work; nearly 24 matches per player, per season.

Starting Strong: USI Volleyball has won six of its last seven season-openers, all six victories coming in three-set matches. The Eagles are 17-13 in season-openers since 1989, 13-7 over the last 20 years.

Under New Management: Head Coach Randi Raff enters her first season at the helm for the Eagles. The 2005 graduate of USI returns to Evansville after spending several years as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at the NCAA Division-I level, most recently at Georgia Tech.

The GLVC’s Opinion: The league’s coaches predicted the Eagles to land 12th in the 2019 preseason poll. USI finished tied for 12th with Quincy University in 2018.

USI vs. Winona State: In three all-time meetings, the Eagles have yet to top the Warriors. The first-ever meeting came in 2007, followed by a pair of matches against then-No. 13 Winona State in the Augustana Invitational in 2016.

Winona State in 2018: The Warriors posted a 13-15 record last season, 10-10 as a member of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference. Winona State posted wins against two nationally-ranked squads in 2018: No. 7 Southwest Minnesota State University and No. 18 Wayne State College (NE)

USI vs. Charleston: The Screaming Eagles have bested the Golden Eagles in all four all-time matchups. USI has defeated Charleston in three sets all four meetings, the most recent meeting was 2002.

Charleston in 2018: The Golden Eagles went 18-17 a year ago, with an 11-5 record in the Mountain East Conference.

USI vs. UIS: The Screaming Eagles lead the all-time series against the Prairie Stars 9-5, but all five losses for the Eagles have come in the last seven meetings (since 2015).

Illinois Springfield in 2018: The Prairie Stars are fresh off their best season since joining the NCAA, posting a 25-8 record (15-3 GLVC), collecting a share of the GLVC regular-season title and representing the GLVC as a sixth seed in the Midwest Regional a year ago.

Bicentennial Fountain Spouting Off Once Again

Bicentennial Fountain Spouting Off Once Again

By Brandon Barger
TheStatehouseFiles.com

INDIANAPOLIS—After a long wait, the fountain in the centennial plaza at the Indiana Statehouse is spouting once again.

The fountain has been shut off since the winter of 2017, because of a problem with the control panel that worked the lights and the water element. It was originally built as part of the plaza commissioned by then-Gov. Mike Pence for Indiana’s bicentennial in 2016.

The fountain includes jets that shoot water into the air and small square lights that are lit up with different colors. The fountain also had a cascading front, which turns the fountain into a reflecting pool when the jets are turned off.

Earlier in August, Jill Carnell, the chief administrative officer of the Indiana Department of Administration, said the fountain itself cost $1.1 million and was expected to run annually between April 15 to Oct. 15.

Carnell said that it took a while for the IDOA to find contractors that could work on the $46,000 repair job on the fountain.

“There were several complex repairs and there are not very many vendors who work on fountains,” she said. “It took a while to figure out the best course of action going forward.”

After repairs were completed, the fountain was tested last Thursday and was fully operational on Friday. Carnell was very excited that the fountain was repaired on schedule.

“We at IDOA hoped to have the fountain operational by mid to late August, so we were glad to meet that deadline last week,” she said.

The fountain is expected to continue flowing until Oct.15.

University of Southern Indiana Men’s and Women’s Cross Country begins the year in a familiar spot as both teams are in the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches’ Association Preseason Top 25 rankings.

The Screaming Eagles are ranked No. 11 in the men’s poll, while the women start the year ranked No. 16.

USI’s men return a plethora of talent, led by two-time reigning GLVC champion Austin Nolan (Evansville, Indiana) and sophomore All-American Titus Winders (Mansfield, Tennessee).

The duo finished first and second, respectively, at the Great Lakes Valley Conference Championship last year, leading the Eagles to their 14th consecutive conference title and 15th in the last 16 years. Winders went on to finish first at the NCAA II Midwest Region Championships, while the 30th-place finish at last year’s national meet netted him All-America honors in his rookie campaign.

Senior Hope-Jones (Cumberland, Indiana) and junior Jennifer Comastri (Indianapolis, Indiana) return to lead the women’s squad in 2019. Jones, who sat out last fall, earned second-team All-America honors on the track last spring, while Comastri was fifth at last year’s GLVC meet.

USI begins the season September 13 when it hosts the Stegemoller Classic at Angel Mounds in Evansville, Indiana. The Eagles also host the GLVC Championships October 26 as well as the NCAA II Midwest Region Championships November 9.
