Arrest made in January murder

0

Evansville Police have made an arrest in the shooting death of Delvin Mitchell (25). Mitchell was killed just after midnight on January 25, 2019. He was found unresponsive by officers who responded to a shots fired call in the 2300 block of Frisse Ave.

Police have charged AMBER BREWER (27) with Murder in connection with the case. The charge has an enhancement because a firearm was used. BREWER is currently in jail in Henderson Kentucky on federal firearms charges.

With the assistance of the FBI Underwater Evidence Search Team, police were able recover the murder weapon from Pigeon Creek near Diamond Ave. Investigators were able to match ballistics from evidence recovered at the crime scene with the gun recovered in the creek. Additional information was used to connect BREWER to the case, including digital evidence.

The investigation is ongoing and anyone with information about Mr. Mitchell’s death is asked to call police.

This arrest came after a month’s long investigation that included members of the EPD, FBI Violent Crimes Task Force, FBI Underwater Evidence Search Team, US Attorney’s Office, Indiana State Police Lab Firearms Examination Unit, and the Vanderburgh County Prosecutor’s Office.

Prayer Vigil & Walk Kicks Off 40 Days For Life

0

Right to Life of Southwest Indiana welcomes all to attend a prayer vigil in observance of the 40 Days for Life campaign to end abortion on Tuesday, September 24 at 6 p.m. on the front steps of Memorial Catholic High School on Lincoln Avenue.  Bishop Siegel will say a prayer and then those in attendance will walk to Planned Parenthood on Weinbach.  Pastor Jamie Kent of Trinity United Church of Christ in Mount Vernon will conclude with a prayer in front of Planned Parenthood.  There will be a bus to transport prayer partners back to the high school.

40 Days for Life is an internationally coordinated 40–day campaign that aims to end abortion locally through prayer and fasting, community outreach, and an all day vigil in front of Planned Parenthood.  The campaign is a peaceful and educational presence.  Prayer partners send a powerful message to the community about the tragic reality of abortion.

According to Mary Ellen Van Dyke, Executive Director, “While Planned Parenthood does not commit abortions locally, it sends young moms to locations in Bloomington and Indianapolis, where Planned Parenthood kills their unborn children.  Planned Parenthood is the largest abortion corporation in the USA and killed more than 320,000 unborn babies last year.”

Since the first coordinated 40 Days for Life campaign took place in 2007:  16,004 lives have been saved; 104 abortion centers have closed; and 191 abortion workers have quit.

JOHN DUNN IS TODAY’S CITY-COUNTY OBSERVER GUEST SPEAKER AT “WORKING OUTSIDE THE BOX” EVENT

1

Evansville businessmen John Dunn will be the City-County Observer ‘Working Outside The Box” guest speaker today at Biaggi restaurant in Evansville.

Dunn began his business career in Evansville after an honorable discharge from the United States Air Force, hence his love of flying and current owner of a Cessna 310. He began at Fuqua Industries in 1959, which owned WROZ Radio and WTVW Channel 7. Dunn started in the Sales Department and by 1964 had been promoted to Vice President and General Manager of WROZ and in 1968 transferred to television.

In 1969, he and a business partner created Medco Centers Nursing Homes. By 1978, there were 28 Medco Centers throughout Indiana and Kentucky, which also included pharmaceutical and physical therapy subsidiaries. In 1978, Dunn sold these properties to a Canadian firm to focus on new ventures – the hotel industry, radio stations, television stations, land development . . .

In 1978, Dunn re-entered the broadcast business by purchasing radio stations in Rhode Island, New Mexico and Texas. At this same time, he also built his first hotel, The Williamsburg Inn at the corner of Division Street and Green River Road.

Dunn eventually divested himself of the radio stations but ventured into television broadcasting with two Evansville low-power television stations (WTSN-LD Channel 36 and WYYW-LD Channel 41), which he continues to operate today.

Over the past 30 years, Dunn Hospitality Group, the management company founded by Dunn in 1978, has built or acquired 28 hotels in Indiana, Illinois, and Kentucky.

In 1990, Dunn and Bill Koester formed a joint venture to develop a 70-acre parcel of land on Evansville’s east side, now known as Eagle Crest Commerce Centre. At the groundbreaking for the first business to be located there, Dunn’s 143-room Hampton Inn, then-Mayor Frank McDonald recognized the vision of Dunn and Koester by proclaiming Eagle Crest as Evansville’s “New Front Door.”

Throughout the years Dunn has endeavored to enrich the community by restoring historical buildings – the Carpenter Home, which now houses the WNIN-Channel 9 facility, was restored and used as the corporate office for the Medco Centers; and the McCurdy Residential Center was initially the McCurdy Hotel.

Dunn is Chairman and CEO of Dunn Hospitality Group, whose corporate offices are located in Evansville. He is also Chairman of the Board of Directors for Tri-State Youth for Christ and Oakland City University Foundation; Immediate Past Chairman of the Board of Trustees for University of Southern Indiana and past Chairman and Director of Welborn Baptist Foundation. He sits on the Corporate Board of Directors for South Central Communications, Inc. and retired from the Boards of Old National Community Bank and Vectren, Inc. in 2010. He also currently serves on the Board of Directors for community groups that include Boys and Girls Club of Evansville, Past President of St. Mary’s Health Systems Seton Corporation, and WNIN-TV/FM88; and formerly on the Boards for Southern Indiana Chamber of Commerce, YMCA and the Salvation Army.

Dunn is a member of the Advisory Council for Indiana University Medical School and a Trustee and member of Church of the Cross in Evansville.

Dunn is a Bosse High School alumnus – Class of ’55. He graduated from Oakland City University in 1961 with a Bachelor of Science degree, Cum Laude. Dunn served 16 years on Oakland City University’s Board of Trustees and was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Humanities in 1977. He currently holds the title of Oakland City University Chancellor.

In 2004, Dunn was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Laws by the University of Southern Indiana.

He has been recognized by Evansville Rotarians, SW Indiana Chamber of Commerce, Buffalo Trace Council and the ROTC for his leadership, and received numerous other awards for his accomplishments in the business community.

Dunn is also a member of Evansville Country Club,  Palm Aire Country Club of Sarasota, FL and is a Rotarian.

Dunn is married to Gail A. (Russell) Dunn. They have three daughters, eight grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.

Revenues From The State’s 10 Casinos Were Down 31.2 Percent From What Had Been Expected In August

0

TheStatehouseFile.com

INDIANAPOLIS- While overall state funds continue to grow, one revenue source, in particular, is underwater: Riverboat casinos.

Revenues from the state’s 10 casinos were down 31.2 percent from what had been expected in August, according to monthly revenue report released by the State Budget Agency. And that represents a 26.9 percent drop from August 2018.

In all, the casinos brought in around $7.8 million, well short of the $11.4 million the state had been hoping for.

The shortfalls continue a trend. Matt Bell, the president and CEO of the Casino Association of Indiana, said that this loss has been happening since 2009.

“That drop is a reflection of a number of things, perhaps most importantly, increased competition from neighboring states,” Bell said. “Ohio’s entry into the markets, the continued expansion in Illinois and Michigan all had an impact on us.”

Bell said people also seem to be wary about the economy right now, to the point where people are saving their money instead of going to the casinos.

Meanwhile, the two racinos – the combination horse-racing tracks and casinos located in Shelbyville and Anderson — saw an increase in revenues. They brought in $8.6 million in August, which was 11.5 percent more than expected. They are up 1.6 percent from a year ago.

Bell credited that improvement through a combination of the geography of the racinos – as they are located in Central Indiana — as well as promotions by the operators running them. Those numbers likely will grow when live dealers are allowed by the state at the racinos beginning in January.

Bell also pointed out that gambling revenues to the state likely will grow now that sports wagering became legal in Indiana on Sept. 1.

Overall, Indiana brought in more than $1.1 billion in August, with incomes, sales, and corporate taxes all showing increases. That was 4.9 percent more than anticipated and 5.1 percent more than the state took in a year ago.

Ivy Tech offers scholarships for volunteer firefighters, EMS
(from 9/20/19 House News Update)
Ivy Tech Community College and the Indiana Volunteer Firefighters Association have joined forces to offer a scholarship to any active volunteer firefighter or emergency medical personnel in the state. The scholarship, available starting in the 2020-2021 school year, is open to both full- and part-time students seeking a degree, and covers tuition and technology fees at any of Ivy Tech’s 40-plus campuses.

The idea for the scholarship originated from a proposed bill by Indiana House Republicans during this year’s legislative session. Though the bill did not pass, Ivy Tech has launched the scholarship as a two-year pilot program. In 2022, state lawmakers will review the results for possible expansion.

With the majority of our state’s firefighters and EMS personnel serving as volunteers, the Public Safety Scholarship is a great opportunity for them to obtain needed skills to jumpstart or advance careers, and also encourage others to serve their communities. Visit IVFA’s website to learn more about this scholarship. You can apply through Ivy Tech online or by calling 888-489-5463.

Young and Braun Introduce Gold Star Families Remembrance Week Resolution

(from 9/20/19 Press Release)

Senators Todd Young and Mike Braun  helped introduce a bipartisan resolution establishing the week of Sept. 22-29, 2019, as Gold Star Families Remembrance Week to honor the families of fallen members of the Armed Forces.

As a Marine, I know there is no more sacred duty than honoring our fallen soldiers and their families,” said Senator Young. “Recognizing the last week in September as Gold Star Families Remembrance Week is one small action we can take to pay tribute to our greatest heroes. This resolution honors Hoosiers like Sandy Terwiske, a Gold Star Mother who lost her son Lance Corporal Alec Terwiske during combat operations in Afghanistan.”

“Every fallen hero leaves behind a family that bears the pain of their great sacrifice for our country,”said Senator Braun.“Gold Star Families Remembrance Week will serve as a reminder that we must always honor our heroes’ families who have, as President Lincoln said, ‘laid so costly a sacrifice upon the altar of freedom.'”

Gold Star Families Remembrance Week is a prelude to Gold Star Mother’s Day, observed by presidential proclamation since 1936 on the last Sunday of September. There is no official date dedicated to families affected by the loss of a loved one who died in the service of the United States.
