Eagles Open GLVC Play Today At McKendree

EVANSVILLE, Ind.—University of Southern Indiana Women’s Basketball ends a busy stretch that included five games in 11 days by opening Great Lakes Valley Conference play Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. when the Screaming Eagles visit McKendree University in Lebanon, Illinois.

Tuesday’s game will be aired live on 95.7 The Spin and the GLVC Sports Network, while live stats, audio, and video will be available at GoUSIEagles.com.

The Eagles (4-1) have won three straight games and are led by senior guard Ashley Johnson, who is averaging 13.2 points and 4.0 assists per contest. Junior guard Emma DeHart is chipping in 11.6 points and a team-high tying 5.4 rebounds per game, while sophomore forward Ashlynn Brown is contribution 10.0 points and 5.4 rebounds per appearance.

USI Women’s Basketball Notes
• Great week. USI Women’s Basketball is coming off a 3-0 week that saw it earn Midwest Region wins over Hillsdale (63-41) and Trevecca Nazarene (83-60) as well as a 56-46 victory over a Tampa team that was receiving votes in the latest WBCA Division II Top 25 poll.

• Johnson leads Eagles. Senior guard Ashley Johnson led USI with 15.7 points, 4.0 assists and 2.0 steals per game during USI’s 3-0 week. Johnson, who had a career-high-tying 19 points to go along with five assists in USI’s win over Tampa, also grabbed 4.0 rebounds per contest on the week.

• Brown notches another career-high. Sophomore forward Ashlynn Brown, who had a career-high 16 points in USI’s loss at Ferris State, notched another career-high in USI’s win over Hillsdale when she pulled down 10 rebounds. Brown is currently tied for the team-lead in rebounding and is third on the team in scoring.

• Freshmen making big contributions. The Eagles’ rookie class is making huge contributions to their lineup through the first five games of the year, with forwarding Hannah Haithcock and guard Addy Blackwell leading the way. The quartet has accounted for nearly 30 percent of the team’s minutes played as well as the team’s scoring output. Haithcock is averaging 8.6 points and 3.8 rebounds per contest, while Blackwell is chipping in 6.8 points and 2.4 rebounds per appearance.

• Thompson, Robbe make an impact against Trevecca. Freshman guard/forward Lexi Thompson and freshman forward Tara Robbe each made a big impact in USI’s 83-60 win over Trevecca Nazarene. Thompson scored her first six points of her collegiate career in the win, while Robbe dished out a season-high four assists.

• Moses finds a different way to aid Eagles. After scoring in double-figures in each of USI’s first two games, senior guard Kiara Moses was held to single digits in all three of USI’s games last week. No worries for the Arkansas Tech transfer as she found other ways to make a big impact for USI. Moses had five rebounds and four steals in USI’s win over Hillsdale, before dishing out four assists in its win over Tampa. She finished the week with a six-rebound, four-assist effort in the Eagles’ win over Trevecca Nazarene.

• DeHart becoming a rebound warrior. Junior guard Emma DeHart is tied for the team-lead with 5.4 rebounds per game after notching her third six-rebound contest of the season in USI’s win over Trevecca Nazarene. DeHart also is second on the team with 11.6 points per contest and has reached double-figures in the scoring column in all but one of USI’s games this season.

• Sherwood scores seven. Senior guard/forward Morgan Sherwood scored seven points in USI’s win over Trevecca Nazarene, marking her highest scoring output of the year. She had a season-high three rebounds in USI’s win over Tampa.

• Turner records two blocks. Junior center Audrey Turner denied a pair of shots in USI’s win over Trevecca Nazarene. It marked the first time this season that USI has had a player with two blocks in a game.

• Double-figures. USI has had six different players reach double figures for the Eagles this year, with all six scorings at least 10 points in multiple games.

• Eagles’ 1,200th game was Stein’s 300th home game. USI’s 63-41 win over Hillsdale marked the 1,200th game in USI Women’s Basketball history as well as the 300th home game for Eagles’ Head Coach Rick Stein. USI is now 670-532 (.557) all-time, while Stein has a 219-81 (.730) all-time record in front of the home crowd.

• About McKendree. Senior guard Jordan Hedberg is averaging 16.3 points per game to lead the Bearcats, who are off to a strong 5-1 start to the season. Senior guard Madison Hart is chipping in 9.0 points and a team-high 10.5 rebounds per contest for a McKendree roster that features six seniors.

• Busy stretch, long layoff. USI’s game against McKendree marks the Eagles’ fifth game in the last 11 days. The Eagles will have some time off, however, as they will play just one time between December 3 and January 2. Of course, that will be a road game against current No. 6 Ashland December 22. The Eagles then host No. 1 Drury to resume GLVC play January 2.

• USI opens Screaming Eagles Arena with a win. USI Women’s Basketball christened its brand-new home with a 52-45 come-from-behind win over No. 11 Central Missouri last Wednesday. The Eagles rallied from a 13-point first-quarter deficit to earn the season-opening victory after holding the Jennies to just 31 points throughout the final 33 minutes of the contest.

• Screaming Eagles Arena. The Eagles’ game against Central Missouri marked the first-ever regular-season basketball game in Screaming Eagles Arena. USI Women’s Basketball played in the Physical Activities Center from 1980-81 to 2018-19, posting a 363-194 record all-time at the PAC, including a 217-81 record under Head Coach Rick Stein.

• USI earns first win over a nationally-ranked opponent since 2017. The Eagles’ win over then No. 11 Central Missouri marked USI’s first victory over a Top 25 opponent since they defeated No. 25 Grand Valley State, 53-44, at the Bellarmine Thanksgiving Classic November 25, 2017. Central Missouri also represented the highest-ranked opponent the Eagles have defeated since taking down No. 9 Drury, 84-78, at the PAC February 4, 2017.

• USI tabbed for a fourth-place finish in GLVC. GLVC Women’s Basketball coaches predicted a fourth-place finish in the GLVC for the Eagles in 2019-20. Drury was the unanimous top pick, while Lewis and Bellarmine were respectively predicted to finish second and third. League-newcomer Lindenwood rounded out the top five picks.

• Magic Mark: 75 points. The Eagles are 414-77 (.843) all-time when scoring at least 75 points. USI is 287-28 (.911) since 1996-97 when reaching the 75-point plateau.

USI Softball Announces Early Signings

“We are excited about this 2020 signing class,” Kunkle said. “They bring power and speed and will make an immediate impact for us when they step on campus next fall.”

Bedrick is in her final year at Brownsburg High School in Brownsburg, Indiana, where she was an All-State and All-Conference honoree. Bedrick hit .531 as a junior in 2019 after posting .461 batting average as a sophomore and a .400 batting average as a freshman. Throughout her three-year prep career at BHS, Bedrick has compiled a .476 career average to go along with 39 RBIs, 11 doubles, two triples, and a home run.

“Mackenzie brings a lot of versatility to our offensive lineup,” Kunkle said. “She always seems to find a way to get on base and uses her speed efficiently in all aspects of her game, especially in the outfield where she will help us tremendously with her speed and her glove.”

Fair is a senior at Center Grove High School in Greenwood, Indiana, where she is a three-time Academic All-Conference honoree in addition to a two-time All-Conference and All-County selection.

A member of the 2019 IHSAA Class 4A state championship team at CGHS, Fair hit .343 with seven doubles, a triple, six home runs and 29 RBIs during her junior year in 2019. Her at-bat in the top of the first inning of the state title game last year produced the game’s only run. Fair hit .378 as a sophomore in 2018 and .370 as a freshman in 2017 and has helped CGHS to three consecutive conference, county, sectional and regional titles.

“Lexi is an exceptional hitter with discipline and power that we are excited to add to our offensive lineup,” Kunkle said. “Behind the plate, she is strong, knowledgeable and manages the game very well.  She is also a versatile player and will find work in the infield as well.”

Herron is in her final year at Franklin Central High School in Indianapolis, Indiana, where she hit .333 as a junior in 2018. Throughout her three-year career at FCHS, Herron has a .323 to go with 18 doubles, two home runs, a triple, and 41 RBIs.

“Emma is bringing another big bat to our roster and we are anxious to see what she can do for our lineup,” Kunkle said. “She is definitely an offensive driven player with power potential and the ability to score runs. Defensively, Emma will work primarily with the infielders to bring more depth to several positions.”

USI begins the 2020 campaign on February 7, 2020 when it travels to Harrogate, Tennessee, to take on Lincoln Memorial University in a doubleheader.

Watson named Division II Bulletin Coach of the Month

University of Southern Indiana Head Coach Rodney Watson was named the Division II Bulletin Coach of the Month for November after becoming the Screaming Eagles all-time winningest head coach and leading the squad to a 5-0 record. The Coach of the Month award is the third of Watson’s career at USI, also earning the honor in January of 2010 and 2016.

Watson became USI’s all-time leader in victories on the Eagles’ third win of the season, defeating Kentucky Wesleyan College, 82-63, in the programs opening game in the new Screaming Eagles Arena. He surpassed former USI Head Coach Bruce Pearl (231 wins, 1992-2001) and reached 234 victory with the 5-0 start of the season.

Watson and the 10th-ranked Eagles tip-off the 2019-20 Great Lakes Valley Conference schedule Tuesday when they visit McKendree University in Lebanon, Illinois. Start time is slated for 7:30 p.m.

There was only one prize-winning teenager carrying stones big enough to say thanks, but no thanks to Roy Acuff. Only one son of Kentucky finding a light of inspiration from Bill Monroe and his Blue Grass Boys and catching a fire from Bob Marley and The Wailers. Only one progressive hippie allying with like-minded conspirators, rolling out the New Grass revolution, and then leaving the genre’s torch-bearing band behind as it reached its commercial peak. There is only one consensus pick of peers and predecessors, of the traditionalists, the rebels, and the next gen devotees. Music’s ultimate inside outsider. Or is it outside insider? There is only one Sam Bush.

Bush was the newgrass commando, incorporating a variety of genres into the repertoire. He discovered a sibling similarity with the reggae rhythms of Marley and The Wailers, and, accordingly, developed an ear-turning original style of mandolin playing.

He’s released seven albums and a live DVD over the past two decades. In 2009, the Americana Music Association awarded Bush the Lifetime Achievement Award for Instrumentalist. Punch Brothers, Steep Canyon Rangers, and Greensky Bluegrass are just a few present-day bluegrass vanguards among so many musicians he’s influenced. His performances are annual highlights of the festival circuit, with Bush’s joyous perennial appearances at the town’s famed bluegrass fest earning him the title, “King of Telluride.”

“With this band I have now I am free to try anything. Looking back at the last 50 years of playing newgrass, with the elements of jazz improvisation and rock-&-roll, jamming, playing with New Grass Revival, Leon, and Emmylou; it’s a culmination of all of that,” says Bush. “I can unapologetically stand onstage and feel I’m representing those songs well.”

Vehicle Crash Turns Out To Be Act of Domestic Violence

Shortly before noon on 12/1/2019 the Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s Office was dispatched to a motor vehicle crash on State Road 66 near the intersection of N. Saint Joseph Avenue. Deputies arrived and found a vehicle had been west bound on State Road 66 when it abruptly veered to the left through the median and traveled across the east bound lanes before careening down a steep embankment into the woods.  The vehicle was occupied at the time by the driver, the driver’s boyfriend, an adult male passenger, and the eight month old daughter of the driver and her boyfriend. The backseat adult passenger was taken to a local hospital where he was treated for a possible facial fracture. No other injuries required immediate medical attention.

During the course of the investigation deputies began to recognize indicators that the crash was an intentional act by the driver as part of an active incident of domestic violence. As a result of the investigation deputies arrested the driver,  Alexis Rodgers, 20, of Evansville for a variety of charges associated with domestic battery and criminal recklessness. Rodgers will be held in the Vanderburgh County Confinement Center without bond until her initial court appearance on Monday.
