The six individuals and one team that will be honored in February are truly worthy of this extraordinary honor. I know that the entire USI community is proud of this class and what it accomplished while at USI.

In addition to the induction of the Hall of Fame Class of 2025, USI is inducting John Deem, William “Bill” Wilson, and Dan Egierski into the Athletic Hall of Distinction for contributions to the success of the University’s varsity programs.

The Screaming Eagles soared during his 11 seasons as he became the program’s all-time winningest coach after the victory over Kentucky Wesleyan College in 2019. He was 251-82 (.754) during his tenure, including a 142-60 (.703) Great Lakes Valley Conference record.

During his tenure, Watson also led the Eagles to the 2019 NCAA II Elite Eight Semifinals; the 2019 NCAA II Midwest Regional Championship; seven NCAA Division II Tournament appearances (2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2017, 2019, 2020); and two GLVC championships (2012 and 2014). USI Art and Design Department presents annual Spring 2025 Senior Seminar Exhibition

The University of Southern Indiana Art and Design Department will host its 2025 Spring Senior Seminar Exhibition in the form of a building takeover now through Friday, January 10 in the Arts Center. This exhibition features the creative work of senior studio art, graphic design, interactive media, illustration and photography students.

The Senior Art and Design Seminars are capstone courses for art and art education majors and combine discussion of current aesthetics issues in the visual arts with practical knowledge in career or graduate school preparation, as well as evaluation of the student artistic growth and potential. This group exhibit is the culmination of these courses and a high point in the art majors’ experience at USI.

“The Spring 2025 Senior Seminar Exhibition is a major part of the culminating capstone experience for each art and design student,” says Rob Dickes, Associate Professor of Photography and Digital Imaging. “This exhibition is a display of the best artwork and designs that each student has created during their time at USI and demonstrates the depth and breadth of the creative activities happening within the Art and Design Department.”

For more information about this event, contact Dickes at rmdickes@usi.edu.

Giulia Cardona named AVCA All-Region Honorable Mention

Honor is second of UE career

University of Evansville senior Giulia Cardona earned American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) All-Region Honorable Mention accolades in an announcement by the organization on Tuesday.

Cardona was selected by the Midwest Region.  She earned the accolade last season becoming the first Purple Aces volleyball player to be recognized.  There are 14 All-Region team members and 6-8 honorable mention selections in each of the 10 regions.  In total, 211 student-athletes earned All-Region honors with 108 different schools being represented.

One of the most decorated players in Missouri Valley Conference history became the first in UE history and just the second-ever MVC player to record 2,000 kills in her career.  She wrapped up her career with a total of 2,183, just 111 shy of the all-time league mark.

Despite missing the final five matches of the season, the 2023 MVC Player of the Year completed the 2024 season as the national leader in total kills (549), total points (611.5), total attacks (1,548), kills per set (5.60), points per set (6.24), and attacks per set (1,580).

Another highlight of the 2024 campaign came on Nov. 5 when Cardona was named the AVCA Division I National Player of the Week.  It marked the second such honor for Cardona and came in a week that saw her record 6.50 kills per set in wins over Illinois State and Bradley while hitting .357.

Earlier in the 2024 season, Cardona set the all-time UE program kills record.  The moment came on Sept. 28 when she surpassed the Aces record of 1,911, which was set by Alondra Vazquez.

Weekend Fatality Accident

0

In the early morning hours of December 7, Evansville Central Dispatch received reports of a

pedestrian being struck by a vehicle on southbound I-69, just north of the Lloyd Expressway exit. Upon

arrival, officers discovered a male victim lying in the roadway, with four vehicles stopped on the

shoulder.

One of the drivers stopped after striking the pedestrian, while two other vehicles had

inadvertently driven over the victim, unaware he was in the roadway. A fourth vehicle, a GMC pickup

truck, was located nearby, unoccupied but running. This vehicle was registered to the pedestrian.

It is unclear why the victim, identified as 32-year-old Dennis Copeland of Appling, Georgia, was

outside of his vehicle. Initial findings suggest that Copeland had opened his door to urinate on the

shoulder near the driver’s side, before crossing the median and being struck by a southbound vehicle.

The driver who initially struck Copeland was taken to a local hospital for a standard blood draw,

as part of routine procedure. Copeland was pronounced deceased at the scene. The investigation is

ongoing, and further details will be provided as they become available.

Ten Hoosiers Set for Short Course World Championships

0

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Ten members of the Indiana swimming and diving program will participate in the 2024 World Aquatics Swimming Championships (25m) this week (Dec. 10-15) in Budapest, Hungary.

World Aquatics hosts the ‘short course’ world championships biennially, utilizing a 25-meter pool as opposed to the 50-meter pool customarily used in international meets. The shorter pool is more similar to the 25-yard pools used in collegiate meets.

Indiana’s contingent includes three individuals representing USA Swimming and seven international athletes – altogether representing seven unique countries.

Peacock will air each finals session, which will begin at 11:30 a.m. ET Tuesday through Sunday.

After medaling at the 2024 Paris Olympics, IU alumna Lilly King and current Hoosier senior Matt King (no relation) will represent the United States once again on the world stage. The former enters the meet as the American record holder in the 50-meter breaststroke (28.77) and 100-meter breaststroke (1:02.50). The duo is joined by IU associate head coach John Long, Jr., who will serve USA Swimming as an assistant coach.

2024 Paris Olympians Ching Hwee Gan (Singapore), Miroslav Knedla (Czechia), Rafael Miroslaw (Germany) and Zalán Sárkány (Hungary) will return to action for their home countries this week. IU’s international group is rounded out by IU junior Chiok Sze Yeo – also representing Singapore – and sophomore Miranda Grana, a native of Guadalajara, Mexico.
