The University of Southern Indiana will be on Fall Break and hold no classes Monday, October 7 and Tuesday, October 8. University offices will remain open during this time. Classes will resume on Wednesday, October 9.

Historic New Harmony offers free public events to celebrate Atheneum’s 40th Anniversary
Historic New Harmony invites the public to attend two free events to celebrate the 40th Anniversary of the Atheneum, a masterpiece of modern architecture, in New Harmony, Indiana Thursday, October 10 and Friday, October 11. A town panel discussion and speaker series will highlight how the town of New Harmony and the Atheneum have been a role model for culture and architecture. Read More

USI to honor achievements, present awards at annual Faculty Convocation
The University of Southern Indiana will hold its annual Faculty Convocation at 3 p.m. Friday, October 11 in Carter Hall located in University Center West on the USI campus. The event is free and open to the public as space is available, and all are invited to attend and honor the USI faculty with their presence. The Convocation, which was first held at USI in 2017, is a formal ceremony to highlight and celebrate the accomplishments of the USI faculty. Proceedings will include a keynote address from Dr. Katie Ehlman, professor of gerontology and the recognition of newly tenured and promoted faculty, emeriti faculty, faculty members who have completed their terminal degrees and those who have reached 25 years of service at the University. 2019 Berger Lecture presentation to cover “The Re/Evolution of the Black Arts Movement”

The University of Southern Indiana Psychology Department welcomes Ron Himes and Heather Beal as they present the 2019 Sydney Berger Lecture. Their lecture, “The Re/Evolution of the Black Arts Movement,” will be held at 6 p.m. Wednesday, October 16 in Mitchell Auditorium, located on the first floor of the Health Professions Center on the USI campus. This event is free and open to the public. “The Re/Evolution of the Black Arts Movement” will investigate the continued need for cultural institutions of color. Himes founded his own theatre company in 1976, during the height of the Black Arts Movement. Himes and Beal will ask and address the following question: do we still need a theatre company dedicated to blackness and why? Read More

USI to exhibit woodwork of John McNaughton, art alumni
The University of Southern Indiana’s McCutchan Art Center and Pace Galleries will host two exhibitions of wooden sculptures and wood-media artwork through October 25, 2019. A free, public reception for the exhibitions will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, October 25. Still Kicking and Carving: John McNaughton features the work of nationally acclaimed artist and USI professor emeritus of art John McNaughton. The work in this exhibition is made up of meticulously fashioned, wooden sculptures and function objects, both big and small, with subject matter ranging from political commentary to personal struggles. Read More

Registration closes Tuesday, October 15; Race is Saturday, November 2

Registration now open for the 18th annual Norwegian Foot March
The 18th annual Norwegian Foot March, an intense mental and physical challenge, will take participants 18.6 miles through the rolling hills of Evansville’s west side. Carrying a 25-pound rucksack, participants will begin and end on the USI campus, working to make it back to the finish line generally in under four and a half hours depending on age and gender. ROTC cadets, soldiers and veterans, as well as civilians, may register individually or as part of a four-member team. Registration can be completed online or by calling USI Outreach and Engagement at 812-464-1989. Early registration is recommended, as the event sells out quickly. ROTC cadets from any school can register for $25 and all other participants can register for $45. Registration will close on October 15 or when the event is full at 500 participants. Art Accolades And Honors

Our gallery founder and resident artist, Mr. Billy Twymon II, was recently honored by the Evansville African American Museum and gave a gallery talk for visitors on the importance of African-American art and culture.

Mr. Twymon’s artwork is displayed and held within the museum’s collection. His critically acclaimed painting Kora, pictured below, can be seen in the museum’s main gallery.

USI SB 2019-20 NFCA Academic Recognition

Ten University of Southern Indiana Softball players were recognized by the National Fastpitch Coaches’ Association (NFCA) for their academic success in 2019-20.

The Screaming Eagles recognized with NFCA All-America Scholar-Athlete honors for the 2019-20 academic year included pitcher Katie Back (Indianapolis, Indiana) catcher/infielder Lindsey Barr (Whitesville, Kentucky) pitcher Caitlyn Bradley (Forest, Indiana) utility player Mikaela Domico (Naperville, Illinois) infielder Claire Johnson (Pittsboro, Tennessee) pitcher Jennifer Leonhardt (Louisville, Kentucky) infielder Katherine Mueller (Evansville, Indiana) infielder Taylor Ricketts (Georgetown, Kentucky) outfielder Allison Schubert (Nicholasville, Kentucky) infielder Haley Shouse (Borden, Indiana).

A total of over 8,000 softball players across seven membership divisions earned NFCA All-America Scholar-Athlete honors for the 2019-20 academic year with 8,161, a first in NFCA’s history. There were 1,769 NCAA Division II student athletes to earn the award, which goes to those earning at least a 3.5 grade point average.

USI was 35-21 overall and 19-7 in the GLVC a year ago as it captured at least a Division II Midwest Regional berth for the fifth straight season.

Downtown Celebration Week Starts Today

Lt. Governor Suzanne Crouch and the Indiana Office of Community and Rural Affairs kicked off the second annual Downtown Development Week.

“Our downtowns are the heartbeats of our communities and a large part of our residents’ quality of life,” said Crouch. “A thriving downtown corridor is important to a community’s continued development, and we want to celebrate all of the amenities they have to offer.”

Launched in 2018, Downtown Development Week is an opportunity for communities across the state to host events and activities within their downtown and commercial districts, spurring economic development and showcasing updates they have made to the downtown spaces. This year, Downtown Development Week runs Monday, October 7 through Saturday, October 12.

“Local economies grow when investments are made. People are drawn to local downtowns and are looking for opportunities to grow the sense of community while also having a little fun,” said Jodi Golden, Executive Director of OCRA. “I’m looking forward to visiting a few communities celebrating this week in unique ways.”

More than 30 cities and towns have planned events to celebrate their downtowns through a variety of events and activities. Five of those communities were awarded with up to a $1,000 grant to help fund the planned activities. An online map is available for viewers to discover events happening in downtowns across the state. Follow all the celebrations with #IlovemyINdowntown.

Etienne named GLVC Defensive Player of the Week

University of Southern Indiana freshman goalkeeper Maya Etienne (Midland, Michigan) was named the GLVC Women’s Soccer Defensive Player of the Week after helping the Eagles to a weekend sweep in league action. The Player of the Week Award is the first of Etienne’s career and the third of the season for USI.

Etienne started the week with a shutout of Southwest Baptist University, 1-0, making five saves after facing 10 shots. She finished the week with her second road shutout with a 1-0 win over Drury University, making another two saves after facing eight shots.

For the season, Etienne has a 7-2-0 record and a 0.46 goals against average during her first collegiate season. She also has six shutouts and made 41 saves, allowing only four goals in nine matches.

The Eagles (7-2-0, 5-2-0 GLVC) and Etienne return to the road this weekend when they travel to William Jewell College October 11 for a 5 p.m. match in Liberty, Missouri, and Rockhurst University October 13 for a noon match in Kansas City, Missouri.
