Solicitor General Thomas M. Fisher Gains Prestigious Recognition

0

Solicitor General Thomas M. Fisher on Friday was inducted into the American Academy of Appellate Lawyers — an organization that only accepts into its ranks “lawyers with a reputation for the highest excellence in appellate work and unblemished integrity,” to quote from Fisher’s letter of invitation.

“The average person might not be aware of what an honor this induction represents, but membership in this academy is limited to 500 lawyers in the United States,” Attorney General Curtis Hill said. “That averages to 10 lawyers per state. This group truly represents the best of the best when it comes to attorneys handling appeals cases.”

Fisher joined the Office of the Attorney General as Special Counsel in 2001 and became Indiana’s first Solicitor General in 2005. In this role, he handles many cases involving constitutional challenges and those with issues of vital interest to state government. In addition, he makes recommendations to the Attorney General on the state’s participation in filing amicus curiae briefs (friend of the court briefs) and regularly consults with the Appellate Division to determine which civil cases the state should appeal.

Fisher has argued four times before the U.S. Supreme Court. Twice, Fisher has won the National Association of Attorneys General Best Brief Award for excellence in U.S. Supreme Court brief writing.

Fisher’s briefs have impact at the Supreme Court. Last year, in Currier v. Virginia, Justice Neil Gorsuch’s majority and plurality opinions several times cited an amicus brief that Fisher and his team filed on behalf of 20 states. The brief addressed how to apply the Double Jeopardy Clause where defendants agree to multiple trials for multiple charges arising from the same incident. This year, in another case supporting Virginia called Virginia Uranium, Inc. v. Warren, Justice Gorsuch’s majority opinion borrowed from Indiana’s 10-state amicus brief an illustration of how the court would have to rewrite a federal statute to rule the other way.

A decade ago, Fisher received national publicity when he defended Indiana’s Voter ID Law before the U.S. Supreme Court in Crawford v. Marion County Election Board. The attention generated by that case landed Fisher on such national news programs as “Lou Dobbs Tonight” and C-SPAN’s “Washington Journal.”

“Given the members of AAAL who are true legends in the law, I am deeply humbled by this honor,” Fisher said. “This award reflects the quality of the team we have assembled in the Office of Attorney General, and I am grateful to my teammates for working so hard to put the state’s best foot forward in every case. Above all, I am grateful to the attorneys general and citizens of Indiana who have afforded me so many opportunities to present challenging and interesting cases in our state and federal appellate courts.”

LEWIS BLACK: “IT GETS BETTER EVERY DAY”

VICTORY THEATRE – APRIL 19

TICKETS GO ON SALE FRIDAY AT 10AM

LEWIS BLACK, GRAMMY Award-winning, stand-up comedian announces 2020 tour, ‘It Gets Better EveryDay.’ “When I say, ‘It gets better every day,’ you might be wondering, ‘is he being facetious?’ Come to the show and find out. Or stay home and wallow in your sadness.”

Black is one of the most prolific and popular performers working today. He executes a brilliant trifecta as a stand-up comedian, actor, and author. Receiving critical acclaim, he performs more than 200 nights annually, to sold-out audiences throughout Europe, New Zealand, Canada, and the United States. He is one of a few performers to sell out multiple renowned theaters, including Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, Brooks Atkinson Theatre, New York City Center, the Main Stage at the Mirage in Las Vegas and a sold-out Broadway run at the Richard Rodgers Theatre in New York City.

His live performances provide a cathartic release of anger and disillusionment for his audience. He is a passionate performer who is a more pissed-off optimist than a mean-spirited curmudgeon. Lewis is the rare comic who can cause an audience to laugh themselves into incontinence while making compelling points about the absurdity of our world.

Since 2014 Lewis Black has done over 400 live streaming shows, called THE RANT IS DUE, at the end of each of his standup performances. Adding his own unique style, Lewis delivers audience-written Rants which have been submitted from the fans at his show and throughout the world. With so much to get off their chests, people use Lewis’ platform to Rant about what’s on their minds. For a view of the latest shows, and the submission form, click here.

LEWIS BLACK continues as the longest-running contributor to THE DAILY SHOW on Comedy Central. He has had comedy specials on HBO, Comedy Central, Showtime and Epix. In 2001, he won Best Male Stand-Up at the American Comedy Awards. He has released eight comedy albums, including the 2007 GRAMMY Award-winning The Carnegie Hall Performance. He won his second GRAMMY Award for his album Stark Raving Black and has published three bestselling books: Nothing’s Sacred (Simon & Schuster, 2005), Me of Little Faith (Riverhead Books, 2008) and I’m Dreaming of a BlackChristmas (Riverhead Books, 2010). In 2012, he performed eight sell-out shows at Richard Rodgers Theatre on Broadway as well as did one of his two HBO Specials BLACK ON BROADWAY. In 2015, Black notably voiced the character “Anger” in the Academy Award-winning film from Pixar, Inside Out.

University of Southern Indiana Women’s Basketball begins the 2019-20 campaign this week with exhibition contests at the University of Kentucky Wednesday at 6 p.m. (CDT) in Lexington, Kentucky, and Purdue University Sunday at 11 a.m. (CST) in Lafayette, Indiana.

This week’s exhibitions will be the Screaming Eagles’ only tune ups prior November 13 regular-season opener against the University of Central Missouri at Screaming Eagles Arena.

Both games will be aired on 95.7 The Spin, while live audio, live stat and video links, if applicable, can be found at GoUSIEagles.com.

USI Women’s Basketball Notes
• Eagles begin 2019-20 with new look lineup. USI Women’s Basketball opens the 2019-20 season with a new-look lineup after losing six players—four seniors—from the 2018-19 campaign. The Eagles brought in four freshman as well as two transfers to bolster their lineup this season.

• USI enters 2019-20 looking for fourth straight 20-win season. The Eagles have reached the 20-win plateau in each of the last three seasons and four times in the last five years. USI has had at least 20 wins 12 times in program history and have reached the NCAA II Tournament in 10 of those 12 seasons.

• What’s back? USI returns five players and two starters, including senior guard Ashley Johnson and junior guard Emma DeHart, from last year’s squad. The Eagles return 33.9 percent (702) of their 2,074 points; 26.3 percent (301) of their 1,145 rebounds; 42.0 percent (178) of their 424 assists; 40.5 percent (109) of their 269 steals; and 27.8 percent (30) of their 108 blocks from last year’s squad.

• What was lost? Three All-GLVC honorees including first-team forward Imani Guy (transfer), second-team guard Alex Davidson (graduation) and third-team center Kacy Eschweiler (graduation). Last year’s senior class played in a combined 350 games, recording  1,916 points, 1,205 rebounds, 416 assists, 235 steals and 144 blocks during the previous four seasons; all while posting an 84-32 overall record and a 52-20 mark in GLVC play. Davidson finished her career ranked 42nd all-time at USI in career scoring (646); while Mikayla Rowan was 26th in career rebounding (405). Eschweiler tied for fifth all-time at USI in games played (115), seventh in blocks (82), 16th in rebounding (514) and 29th in scoring (788).

• Eagles begin season with two exhibitions. USI is not only playing its first exhibition game since the 2017-18 season, it is playing two exhibition games for the first time since 2014-15. The Eagles’ trip to Mackey Arena Sunday marks the first-ever meeting between USI and Purdue in women’s basketball.

• USI picks up preseason ranking. The Eagles are ranked No. 18 by the Women’s Division II Bulletin Preseason Top 25 poll.

• USI tabbed for fourth-place finish in GLVC. GLVC Women’s Basketball coaches predicted a fourth-place finish in the GLVC for the Eagles in 2019-20. Drury was the unanimous top pick, while Lewis and Bellarmine were respectively predicted to finish second and third. League-newcomer Lindenwood rounded out the top five picks.

• Magic Mark: 75 points. The Eagles are 413-76 (.845) all-time when scoring at least 75 points. USI is 286-27 (.914) since 1996-97 when reaching the 75-point plateau.

The Spinning Place, a prize-winning collection of poetry by Chelsea Wagenaar published by Southern Indiana Review (SIR) Press, is now available for purchase through Amazon with a wider release planned for Friday, November 1. The Spinning Place considers the body as the origin of ecstasy and agony, revealing how language—its possibilities and limits—bridges us to one another, but also shatters intimacy. The collection’s three sections examine origin, exile, and the reconciliation of praise and sorrow with lyric precision and the heart of storytelling. The poems ask us to behold the ordinary astonishment of birth, motherhood, and faith: to witness the everyday as though it were sacred.
