Aces hang on for 79-75 win over Ball State

DeAndre Williams posts 26 in debut

Sophomore DeAndre Williams had a big debut for the University of Evansville men’s basketball team, recording 26 points and 9 rebounds to push the Purple Aces to a 79-75 win over Ball State on Saturday evening.

“The points kind of just came to me in the flow of the offense,” Williams explained.  “I was making shots and my teammates were giving me good passes.”

Williams was 11-of-14 from the field and added three assists and two steals.  Sam Cunliffe also had a strong debut, registering 17 points.  He was 3-for-4 from outside and had three helpers.  K.J. Riley had a solid night with 14 points.  Ball State saw Tahjai Teague score 20 points to go along with eight boards.

“We came out a little different than we did against USI.  I am really encouraged by a lot of what we did tonight,” Aces head coach Walter McCarty said.  “We had a lot of guys come in and play a lot of minutes.  Our pace was really good.  We were moving the basketball from side-to-side.  In the first half, we trusted each other and played really connected.”

Making his UE debut, Williams recorded the first five points of the game to give the Aces a 5-2 lead.  Ball State fought back to take its first lead of the night at 10-9 on a bucket by Tahjai Teague at the 14:42 mark.  Seconds later, another Williams field goal put the Aces in front and they were off to the races from there.

From that points until halftime, Evansville went on a 31-8 run to go into the break with a 40-18 lead.  After Williams put UE in front, Sam Cunliffe drained a triple on the break to push the lead to four.  What was an 11-0 run continued with buckets from Artur Labinowicz, Shamar Givance and another from Williams that made it a 20-10 game at the midway point of the half.

UE kept rolling from there.  After the Cardinals cut the deficit to eight points (24-16), the Aces had another nice rally, reeling off the next 13 to take a 37-16.  Marcus Henderson converted his first field goal, grabbing the rebound on a UE miss before hitting the basket.  Williams capped off the run with his second trey.  Ball State ended a scoreless drought of six minutes when Kyle Mallers hit a layup in the final minute, but on the other end, Givance drained UE’s fifth triple in the final seconds to send his squad to the locker room with a 22-point advantage.

Williams finished with 15 points in the half, hitting six of his seven attempts.  He also had a game-high six rebounds in the opening stanza.

K.J. Riley converted an and-one in the opening moments of the second half to make it a 45-20 game, but the Cardinals had a run of their own in mind.  Three buckets in a row, including two triples, made it a 45-28 game three minutes into the half, forcing a UE time out.  Williams’ stellar debut continued as he added his third from outside and his eighth from inside to put Evansville back up by 20 at 57-37 seven minutes in.  He capped that run off with a jumper from just inside the 3-point line at the shot clock buzzer.

Ball State never gave up and battled back as the second half moved along.  With just under 10 minutes left, they got within 16 and with 5:26 on the clock, a triple from Ishmael El-Amin trimmed the Evansville lead to 68-57.  Two more triples finished off a 15-3 run as they made it a 68-63 game.

Noah Frederking helped to muscle the UE lead back to two possessions.  After drawing a charge, he drew a foul on the offensive end and hit both free throws.  Cunliffe added a triple that gave the Aces a 73-63 lead with 3:11 on the clock.  Ball State was not finished as they posted the next six to cut the gap to four a minute later.  Inside the final minute, an and-one by Teague got them within one tally at 75-74.  With 12 seconds left, a UE turnover gave the ball back to the Cardinals, but a missed triple saw UE get the ball back.  The Aces hit four free throws in the final seconds to finish the 79-75 game.

“We played well for 20 minutes, but in the second half, we took our foot off the pedal,” Riley said after the win.  “We knew the only way they could come back was by shooting 3’s and that is what they did.”

Riley also took the positives out of what was a great first half and at the end of the night – a season-opening win.

“We know that if we play like we did in the first half, we can play with anyone.  We just have to keep it up.”

A total of 5,372 fans were in attendance on Saturday.  It was the highest attendance for a season opener since the first-ever game at the Ford Center against Butler in 2011.  The win marked the 100th for the Purple Aces inside the Ford Center.  The first was the win over the Bulldogs in 2011.

A big one is on tap Tuesday evening for the Aces as they travel to Lexington, Ky. for the first-ever match-up against the University Kentucky.  The Wildcats are expected to be the #1 team in the nation following wins over Michigan State and Eastern Kentucky.  The Spartans entered the season as the top-ranked team in the nation.  Game time is 6 p.m. CT at Rupp Arena.

Winders claims another title as Eagles overcome hurdle to secure nationals berth

0

University of Southern Indiana sophomore All-American Titus Winders captured his second consecutive NCAA II Midwest Region title Saturday with his first-place finish at the regional meet. His effort helped the No. 9 Screaming Eagles to a third-place finish out of 31 teams and to secure a berth into the NCAA II National Championships, which are November 23 in Sacramento, California.

Winders took an early lead in the race and stayed within the top five runners throughout the competition. The reigning Midwest Region and Great Lakes Valley Conference Runner of the Year pulled into the lead in the final three kilometers and put eight seconds between himself and the second-place finisher—Chris Stimpfel of Saginaw Valley State University—by race’s end as he finished with a 10-kilometer time of 31 minutes, 5.8 seconds.

His performance was vital in the Eagles’ effort to secure an automatic bid to the national meet as senior Austin Nolan, who has jostled with Winders as USI’s top performer throughout the year, was dropped out of the competition early in the race.

USI got a huge boost from its traditional No. 3-7 runners as senior Nathan Hall along with juniors Grady Wilkinson, Gavin Prior and Wyat Harmon all finished within 11 spots of each other and inside the top 40 overall. Hall was USI’s second to cross the finish line for the Eagles as he was 28th overall with a time of 32:33.3. Wilkinson was 29th with a time of 32:42.2.

Prior and Harmon finished 37th and 39th, respectively, while senior Javan Winders rounded out the Eagles’ lineup with a 69th-place finish in the 216-member field.

No. 3 Grand Valley State University took home the team title with a score of 52 points, while No. 8 Michigan Tech University was second with 116 points. USI finished with 134 points, while No. 22 Walsh University and No. 14 Saginaw Valley State University were fourth and fifth with respective point totals of 146 and 155.

USI secured its 15th consecutive trip to the NCAA II National Championships and its 27th overall.

Comastri, Jones lift Eagles at regional meet

0

Junior Jennifer Comastri and senior Hope Jones posted top 20 finishes to lead No. 15 University of Southern Indiana Women’s Cross Country to a sixth-place finish out of 32 teams at the NCAA Division II Midwest Region Championships Saturday morning at Angel Mounds.

Comastri finished 13th out of 223 runners with a six-kilometer time of 21 minutes, 24.7 seconds, while Jones was 18th with a time of 21:36.3. Both runners earned All-Midwest Region honors with their top 25 finishes.

Freshman Presley Warren and junior Doriane Langlois finished 44th and 48th, respectively, to aid the Screaming Eagles, while freshmen Aubrey Swart and McKenna Cavanaugh were 72nd and 73rd. Senior Ashley Lawhorn rounded out the Eagles’ lineup with a 93rd-place finish.

USI’s sixth-place finish means the Eagles will have to wait until Monday’s announcement of at-large bids into the NCAA II National Championships, which are November 23 in Sacramento, California. This year’s NCAA II Midwest Region Championship field was arguably the strongest field in the nation with nine teams ranked inside the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches’ Association Top 25.

No. 2 Grand Valley State University won the race with 40 points to punch its ticket to nationals, while No. 19 Michigan Tech University was second with 146 points to secure a trip to the national meet. No. 10 Walsh University (155 points) rounded out the automatic bids with a third-place finish, while No. 9 Hillsdale (156 points) and No. 17 Southwest Baptist University (183 points) will join USI (191) in waiting to see if their names are called on Monday.

GVSU’s Allie Ludge was the individual champion with a time of 20:34.7, while GLVC champion Elysia Burgos of Southwest Baptist was second with a time of 20:44.5.

The 13th-ranked University of Southern Indiana men’s basketball team raced out to a big lead and cruised to an 83-56 victory over Malone University Saturday evening in the G-MAC/GLVC Crossover in Hillsdale, Michigan USI starts the season,2-0, while Malone opens with a 1-1 mark.

The Eagles’ victory ties Head Coach Rodney Watson with former USI Head Coach Bruce Pearl for the all-time lead in victories at 231. Watson is 231-74 in 10-plus seasons (2009-Present), while Pearl was 231-46 in nine seasons (1992-2001).

USI had command of the game through nearly the all of the opening half after trailing, 4-2 and 6-5. USI senior guard Joe Laravie hit a bomb from downtown to put the Eagles up, 8-6, as the Eagles never looked back.

The Eagles continued to build its lead in the opening 20 minutes, extending the margin to 17 points, 36-19, with 4:06 remaining before halftime when junior guard Clayton Hughes hit a three-point field goal. USI would finish the opening half with a 16-point, 42-26 lead by the intermission.

Laravie and junior forward Emmanuel Little with 12 points each paced the Eagles, who shot 66.7 percent from the field (18-27).

After a slow start to the second half, the Eagles flew out to a 62-30 lead on an 18-4 run that was capped off by a three-point barrage by sophomore forward Glen Rouch. Rouch scored all nine of his points on the three-straight three-point bombs in a span of two minutes.

USI would extend the lead all the way to 38 points, 74-36, with 7:14 to play in the game when Laravie hit his third three-point field goal of the game. The Eagle cruised the rest of the way for the 83-56 victory.

As a team, USI shot 53.6 percent from the field (30-56), 58.8 percent from beyond the arc (10-17), and 92.9 percent from the stripe (13-14). The Eagles also won the battle on the glass, 39-29.

For the second-straight game, Laravie and Little led the Eagles in scoring with 17 points each. Laravie was a blistering seven-of-10 from the field and three-of-five from beyond the arc, while Little was eight-of-16 from the field and one-of-two from the stripe.

USI junior forward Josh Price came off the bench to produce a double-double with 16 points and a team-high 10 rebounds. Price was three-of-four from the field and made Pioneers pay at the stripe, going 10-of-10.

USI opens the 2019-20 home schedule and the new Screaming Eagles Arena November 18 when the Eagles host long-time rival Kentucky Wesleyan College for a 7 p.m. tipoff. The Panthers were 10-16 last season and open the 2019-20 campaign Wednesday versus Bellarmine University in Louisville, Kentucky.

The Eagles trail the all-time series with the Panthers, 49-42, but have won the last six contests. USI took the last meeting in the Small College Basketball Classic in 2017-18, 88-75, at the Ford Center behind the 17 point, 10 rebound performance by Little.

The Screaming Eagles (15-13, 7-6 GLVC) are now in a three-way tie in the seventh spot in the GLVC standings after McKendree University defeated the Missouri University of Science and Technology in four sets Saturday, with USI holding the tiebreaker over the Miners and fellow tied opponent University of Illinois Springfield.

The Bloomington, Illinois-native posted six kills in the first, third and fourth sets; the three sets USI claimed over Maryville. Anderson also crossed the 300-kill threshold for the season with her final kill in the first frame.

Junior setter Casey Cepicky hit the 40-mark in assists for the fifth time in 2019, passing Quin Shoultz ’16 for sixth all-time in career assists on Anderson’s first kill of the contest. The St. Louis-native has reached 35-plus assists in each match of USI’s four-match winning streak.

Seniors middle blocker Amanda Jung and libero/outside hitter Mikaila Humphrey produced in their final home match for the Eagles. Jung posted six kills on a .400 hitting clip and six blocks to lead USI in that department. Freshman libero Audrey Crowder aided the Anderson and Humphrey’s effort with another 17 digs in the contest. The Avon, Indiana-native has posted double-digits in that category in seven of her last eight matches, including all four in USI’s current stretch.

The Eagles are on their first four-match GLVC winning-streak since November of 2013, where USI claimed five in-a-row to open that month. That streak also featured the last time USI scored back-to-back weekend sweeps in league play.
